The word rebel has a bad rap. One tends to think of a rebel as one who causes trouble, fights the system, who operates within his own set of laws. But where would we be without rebels? Ghandi, Martin Luther King, Jr., Cesar Chavez, Emma Goldman, Noam Chomsky, Albert Camus, Susan B. Anthony. Film has its own list of famous rebels: James Dean in Rebel Without A Cause, Marlon Brando in The Wild One, Matt Dillon in The Outsiders, Judd Nelson in The Breakfast Club. Fashion certainly has its share of rebels: Alexander McQueen, Jean Paul Gaultier, John Galliano, Vivienne Westwood, Stephen Sprouse, Rei Kawakubo for Comme des Garçons. This issue, the third installment of The Wallflower zine wasn’t planned as an ode to rebels, but as the stories came in, there was a thread of that spirit in each one. In nick prendergast’s Rebel Youth, stylist Ariella Villa referenced the work of Swiss photographer Karlheinz Weinberger, who documented Swiss working class teenagers in the ‘50s and ‘60s who created their own looks fusing iconic American pop culture imagery — biker jackets, denim jeans, bouffant hairdos and Elvis — into their own style of defiant gang glamour. German-born photographer Claudia Grassl photographed a trio of blondes whose long manes of hair become a symbol of youthful defiance. ‘80s skaters and their California street style influenced Jack Williams and Caroline Webb in The Edge. Steven Visneau and stylist Jennifer Bigham chose Brittany and Becca as two rock’n’roll rebels just looking for trouble. Eden of Anarchy was Scott 1212 Hartzler’s vision of teenage rebellion, featuring model teenager Eden as a one-girl wrecking crew. Enjoy this, our third issue of The Wallflower.
