Let’s embark together on this journey to explore how you can design your own cosy interior, the significance of materials, layers and textures, and some notable 2024 trends to inspire you along the way.

restful and restorative design can be achieved for any style preference by simply following some standard home design best practices. “Calming design comes down to how the space makes you feel,” says Brittany McNab, co-

owner of Fifteen Twelve Home Co. and a featured presenter at the upcoming 2024 Calgary Home + Garden Show. No matter the style, McNab says creating a relaxing home environment is all about functionality and personalization.

Instead of having a hard-and-fast rule about what makes a space beautiful, she stresses that form and function should work in tandem, creating practical interiors that work for the people who interact with the space every day. For anyone looking to update and enhance their home to feel more comfortable in 2024 and beyond, a thoughtful and intentional de-cluttering of unnecessary items and mess would be the first and most costeffective and important step, says McNab. “Before hiring an interior designer, clear your space of things you don’t need, want or like. I often see people who have rooms with too many pieces of furniture or too many small tchotchkes. It looks too busy, and that is something I believe contributes to a space feeling stressful. After decluttering, simple design changes will make a space shine and feel lovely.” The next step is to focus on creating a purposeful floorplan.

Beyond just the style and finish of the pieces in a room, being thoughtful about how furniture and decor exist in a home can help minimize ‘noise’ and elevate the overall look and feel of everything within the four walls. Borrowing from the ancient philosophy of feng shui – the practice of arranging furniture and decor to create balance with the natural world – intentionality in a floorplan can greatly improve the overall energy of a home. Even if you or your designer are not strictly adhering to the rules and practices of feng shui, the right scale and positioning of the pieces in a room is a must. “I always consider a few things when deciding on furniture orientation,” says McNab. “First, I take into account natural paths of travel through the room and make sure a space of at least 30 inches, but ideally 36 inches, is available for people to move about the room freely. This should be a given, but focus on keeping doorways, hallways, and

windows clear, as well as the space around a coffee table or a bed. You also want to be able to move chairs in and out of a dining room or office. Nothing should impede travel.” Finally, it’s time to understand how you use the rooms in your house. For example, will the living room be used for conversation, watching TV, eating, snacking, or snoozing? Is it a busy space like the bathroom, mud room, laundry room or kitchen where people will be in and out throughout the day? Each room should be designed to prioritize purpose and function. Once the three objectives are met – decluttering, furniture placement and function – you will have the perfect canvas to apply your unique and personalized style, while maintaining a sense of calm, relaxation and comfort. ROOMMATE LIVING HOW TO DEAL WITH REPLENISHABLES

Living with roommates has many benefits but it can get a little tricky if you don’t decide how to deal with the usual living costs that go along with rent. I’m talking about replenishables such as toilet paper, food, dish soap, light bulbs, paper towels, etc. The sooner you choose the best way for you and your roomies to buy this stuff, the better. It will help you avoid fighting over who uses the most toilet paper. TAKE TURNS BUYING: This works

if – and only if – everyone agrees to it. If not, it’s chaos. You probably don’t want to buy toilet paper and just assume your roommate will grab it next time, because that roommate might never buy any. Be clear — I’ll buy this pack; you buy the next. Decide who buys what and for where if you’re going to take turns. Same goes for groceries, cleaning supplies and anything else you might share. THE SLUSH FUND: If you think it’s necessary, create a fund that you all contribute to that will be there when you need essentials. Placing a jar in the kitchen works as long as everyone agrees not to use the funds for take-out (it can be tempting when you get low on groceries). Decide on an amount that everyone will contribute on a weekly or monthly basis, and confirm what the funds will be 24

used for to buy. Will they strictly be used for household supplies or will they pay for groceries, too? KEEP THINGS SEPARATE: If you can’t all agree on the best way to deal with replenishables, it’s best to keep it all separate. If you’re living with someone you strictly consider a roommate, and not necessarily a friend, this is often the best bet. It can get tiresome to split up toilet paper but it can also avoid awkward scenarios and fights about money. There’s nothing wrong with keeping things to yourself, plus it can make your monthly budgeting a lot easier. EMBRACE FAMILY LIVING: If you’re

close with your roommates, you might not need an actual system. For some roommates, especially those who have lived together for a long time, these things just work themselves out. You’ll grab toilet paper when it’s on sale, and so

will your roommate. You’ll make dinner, they’ll do the dishes, and vice versa. If you like to bake, and your roommates like to eat your baking, they’ll make sure the house is always stocked with flour. When you live like this, you have more of a family dynamic than a roommate agreement. It can be wonderful to have a relationship like this, but it’s not for everyone. Make sure you’re all on board before you start using your roomies’ shampoo or eating their cereal!

Here are some strategies to help you keep your home safe and sound. • Make sure your electrical outlets are covered. There are many kinds of outlet covers – choose the one that is right for you. • Confirm that you have reliable smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Make sure that the batteries are working. • Use doorknob covers on doors to non-childproofed areas (like the bathrooms and laundry room). Baby gates are also an effective solution for keeping kids in or out of a room.

• Don’t use toys or pillows in the crib, especially with young babies — your baby could suffocate. Never use an electric blanket for a child (could cause a fire). • Never leave a child unattended in the bathtub. Drowning can occur in seconds, and mere inches of water pose a risk. • Make sure your bathtub has a non-skid mat or pads to avoid slips. You can use a baby tub inside the bathtub — one with baby slings are especially helpful with infants. • Lock up all medications, alcoholic beverages, chemicals and cleaning products. Make sure matches and lighters are out

of reach. Use cabinet locks to secure these items. • Make sure cords for blinds are not tied together at the bottom (this is a strangulation hazard). • Make sure knives and sharp items are in an area where kids can’t access them. • Check toys for broken parts/ bits that are a choking hazard or sharp. Keep small toys for older children (like figurines, game board pieces and small building blocks) away from your baby.

Here are a few tips to help you avoid finding damaged items at your destination: 1. CONSIDER PURCHASING BOXES FROM YOUR MOVER.

The most common packing mistake people make is getting free boxes at the grocery or liquor store and then putting too many things in them. Using a large box to pack books and magazines may make it too heavy and the box might break during the move. Use this rule of thumb: The heavier the item, the smaller the box. Be choosy about your boxes; free boxes from a grocery store used to ship produce could contain insect larvae that may transfer to your belongings. 2. BE REALISTIC ABOUT THE NUMBER OF BOXES YOU NEED.

You will most likely underestimate your box requirement. Often, people think 50 or 60 boxes will be enough, and then two days before moving day, they realize they need 250. 3. START PACKING EARLY AND BE COMPLETELY PACKED WHEN

This also interferes with the optimal loading of the moving truck. There is a loading system where the first things placed in the truck are light items such as chairs, lampshades, cushions, etc; these items are placed in the ‘attic’ (the area over the cab) of the truck. Next, a ‘box wall’ is stacked to the ceiling to hold the items in the attic in place. Plastic wrapped mattresses are then put against the box wall and everything is secured with tie-off straps to keep belongings from getting jostled during the move. If you’re not completely packed and ready on moving day, movers can’t create that box wall early on. This decreases the capacity of the items that can be moved at one time. It also eats up precious time, and therefore, money!

Many of us have been thinking of doing some redecorating but are not sure exactly where to start, or if we actually want to do an entire room or just enhance it. In the context of the living room or den, a good place to start is always the centrepiece – the coffee table. HOW TO PICK THE RIGHT COFFEE TABLE

The design decision isn’t as intuitive as you may think. Here’s what to consider before you make your purchase. Choosing the right coffee table for your space seems simple enough: You walk into your favourite shop, pick a piece you love, go home and voila! But wait a few hours, reflect a little more and you may realize that you made the wrong choice. Like choosing the right couch, finding the right coffee table takes some larger considerations. Size, height and width all matter, as does scale and proportion. Does it have to be kid-friendly or storage-friendly? Does it fit your lifestyle or your room? CONSIDER SIZE FIRST

Is there anything more awkward than an ill-fitting coffee table? One that’s too high or far too low? The general rule is that you should find a coffee table that is ideally standing at the same height as the cushions, or one to two inches. lower. If you go too far on 36

Similar to the above sentiment, look for a coffee table that has the right length in comparison to the width of your couch. In specific terms, this means your coffee table should be two-thirds the length of your couch. So, for a 96-in couch, look for a coffee table that is 64 in. long. Also, think about distance, too: From the edge of your couch to the edge of the table should be 18 in. Why? You want it to be close enough to reach for your drink or put your book down, but far


enough that you can stretch out your legs. BALANCE YOUR STYLE

Find harmony between your couch style and your coffee table style. If you have a substantial couch in a solid block of colour, try pairing it with a “lighter” version of a coffee table that’s glass with a chrome frame. If your couch is more streamlined and smaller in frame, opt for a coffee table that has more weight to it, whether that’s a wooden piece or an entirely solid base. FUNCTIONALITY

Do you have pets or children? Might be best to opt for a coffee table that has an oval shape; no

hard edges mean no possible injuries. Consider what the primary use of the table will be: Is it purely decorative, for storage or for entertaining purposes? All of that comes into play. Some tables come with shelves or drawers, others with materials that may stain if a wet drink or food is placed on it. Pick a piece that works with your lifestyle.
