With an almost endless variety of products to choose from, designers and renovators are able to grant just about any home design wish. Home Décor and Renovations magazine has been busy probing the market to bring you the latest in home design and décor. t

he old adage is true, good things do come in small packages! Case in point, designer Yanic Simard’s impeccably decorated 640-sq.-ft. two-bedroom Victorian home in Toronto. While many people think bigger is better when it comes to owning real estate, Yanic saw the immediate potential in this cosy gem and set out to prove that he can live large in a small space. “Choosing a house with a good frame is key when wanting to design a space that feels bigger than it actually is,” says Simard. The quaint house he chose boasts large appeal with 10- and 11-ft. vaulted ceilings, eight-ft. doors and oversized baseboards, elements that helped kick-start his overall design inspiration. When it came

to establishing the flow of the house, Yanic’s eclectic style shines throughout the space with mid-century design elements mixed with antique, Art Deco and ’70s influences. A sophisticated colour palette of black, white and grey accented with hues of mossy green, brown and baby blue and unexpected hits of gold and chrome mixed in creates a truly interesting dynamic. Of course, one of the biggest challenges when decorating and living in a smaller space is storage. Simard insists that storage throughout every room is essential to keeping a chic abode. So he came up with creative solutions to maximize space in his small quarters. Solutions such as a polished chrome armoire in the den/ guest room, that works as a stylish piece and can also accommodate

a guest’s personal belongings. Hidden storage under the sofa in the living room, closet organizers in the bedroom, and a stainless steel cart in the bathroom all provide extra storage and diminish the look of clutter. Finally, to make his small space feel comfortable, luxurious and complete, Simard opted for a variety of interesting fabrics from linen and silk to velvet and chenille. These fabrics appear in different aspects around the home from curtains and pillows to furniture and rugs. While decorating a small space may seem like a daunting task, Simard claims, “A good and well-planned furniture layout is key to a sophisticated environment.” So if you have a petite pad, get planning and you too can live large in a small space! Yanic Simard is the principal designer of the Toronto Interior Design Group. Specializing in residential and commercial projects, Simard often applies his signature high/low and old/new combination design techniques in developing unique designs. I have designed many show homes for builders over the years, thriving on the challenge of working on a budget and a deadline. Some builders leave the whole project to our team, and others like to be involved throughout the project, and I enjoy the individual approaches of both. individual home with the “wow factor.” Fenwick and Company is often asked to reproduce that look for clients. The following are some inside tips to make your home look like a Show home: First Impressions The front of the home should be tidy and fresh. A neutral colour with trim in a contrasting colour adds interest. An accent colour on the front door, new door hardware, new mailbox and new exterior lights create the right impression. Inside the home, the front foyer sets the tone for the rest of the home. If the front foyer has interest and is warm and welcoming, people are enticed to see what is around the corner. Clear Away the Clutter Our daily lives are full and tables pile up with paperwork, work surfaces become full of kitchen appliances, and bathrooms show the routines of daily life. Analyze your spaces. Get rid of what you no longer use and fi nd unique storage solutions for the clutter. Review Personal Collections and Family Pictures Most people will display family pictures in different frames on every surface available. Try collecting all the years of photographs, co-ordinating their frames so they blend together and placing them on a wall in a hallway. I call it “The Rogues Gallery”. It becomes a feature that att racts more attention because the pictures are co-ordinated and grouped. Th is is not to say that a picture frame placed artfully on an end table or nightstand is a bad idea. The same goes for collections. Grouping collections in a curio cabinet or group display has more impact than the individual pieces. Less is More Th is goes back to clutter. The more “busy“ the room, the less comfortable the room.

Evaluate the furniture you have. Is it in keeping with your style? Do you have too much furniture for the space? Does your seating arrangement allow for good conversation? The look of a room can totally be redefi ned by repositioning the furniture and removing any “extra“ pieces that do not enhance the room’s function. The same goes for accessories. Try to group like accessories together if they are smaller pieces and use larger pieces by themselves. Neutralise and Co-ordinate Neutral does not mean devoid of colour. Many colours can act as neutrals — various shades of brown or grey, if used as the main colour, creates a unified flow throughout the home. If you really like colour, analyze what colours are predominant in your home, select up to three that work well together and use them throughout – but sparingly — for example: as a feature wall. Then carry the same colours throughout the home using accessories. Kitchens and Bathrooms Kitchens and bathrooms are the most important rooms to show the “Wow.” If you were to put any money into your house this is where to put it! If you are not ready for the full remodel, you can paint tired cabinets, fit them with new pulls; add new faucets, towel bars, and a new laminate countertop. It will do wonders. Don’t Forget Lighting Lighting is a very important tool. It can brighten a space or create a mood. Invest in some new fi xtures and update the look of your home. The most important point to remember is that whatever Show home decorating tips you use, the space must reflect your own personal style. Spend the time analyzing your style and implementing that style into your home. The efforts will be reflected in the “Wows” from your friends and family.

the creation of a warm and inviting atmosphere? Bobbie and Cathe didn’t think so when they fi rst started to think about renovating their kitchen. As an extra measure, they also wanted to ‘green-up’ their space by choosing eco-friendly materials for their cabinetry and countertops. With defi nite ideas about how they wanted to proceed, the couple consulted with Sergey and Dmytri of Accord Cabinets to get the ball rolling. Cathe and Bobbie had put some thought into renovating their 35-year-old home’s European-style kitchen by punching out the wall between kitchen proper and the adjoining dining room which instantly gave the open concept look they were wanting. Their choice for the cabinetry was an Echo-Wood engineered veneer called Wenge that imparts a rich, dark, exotic look. Set off with stainless steel cabinetry pulls, the look is strong and sophisticated. “There’s no

detailing on them, which is part of the simple, clean look we wanted,” says Cathe. Both Cathe and Bobbie are impressed with the series of bottom pull-out drawers that provide maximum storage and easy at-a-glance retrieval of kitchen items. All drawers glide in and out thanks to the Blu-motion soft-closure mechanism that has effectively banished slamming kitchen doors and drawers forever. Cabinet uppers have been kept to a spare minimum over the countertops to reinforce the clean, contemporary lines within the space. Instead an open shelf is tucked diagonally in a corner closest to the dining room, and on the opposite side, a bank of stainless steel, glass-fronted shelves that open upward with a spring motion provide a uniquely streamlined effect. Aventes? Another major ‘green’ choice in this kitchen is the concrete countertops under the kitchen window as

well as on the centre island that houses the cooktop and the teardrop peninsula at the end of the island. “We went with a green/grey colour choice on the teardrop surface for interest sake,” says Cathe. Meanwhile, the peninsula is supported by a concrete hollow pillar to fi nish off the look. Cathe and Bobbie were very impressed with the natural, earthy look that concrete provides. “We had some particles mixed in with the concrete for a litt le bit of dimension,” says Cathe. “Over time it will take on a weathered look which totally appeals to us and it is fi nished with silicone for a slight shine as well as durability.” The opposite side of the kitchen is home to the built-in oven and refrigerator with a well-placed pull-out pantry in between. A small desk area with wine rack feature provides a compact work space complete with under-cabinet lighting for extra illumination. The substantial counterspace works very well for entertaining. “When we use the dining room the counter between the kitchen and the dining room

transforms into a great buffet area,” says Cathe. Cathe and Bobbie have been using their kitchen for about three months since it was fi nished at the end of June, and are convinced that their initial idea of combining contemporary style along with an inviting sense of warmth has been achieved. They both enjoy the efficiencies that come from more working and walking space. “It’s not a one-person kitchen anymore,” says Cathe. “It’s defi nitely big enough for two.” The couple is so pleased with the quality of work that Accord Cabinets provided to them during the renovation. “They are excellent craft smen who created a top-notch product. Both Bobbie and I found Sergey and Dmytri to be very helpful in the process when we were deciding what we wanted. They have good follow through and the time lines were excellent. If there were glitches along the way, they were quick to respond. We are very impressed with their workmanship and professionalism. It’s obvious that they take great pride in their work.”

Renovation month kicks off BY stePHen DUPUis

AS A HOMEOWNER, I’M CONSTANTLY ON THE LOOKOUT

for a neat litt le design I can use for inspiration on my own home. At fi rst, the stop and pause was subtle, but I quickly realized that I am by far not alone in this group of passive renovators. If you’re like me and are always on the lookout for a good reason to better your home, October is most likely your favourite time of the year. Why? Because it’s Renovation Month! Renovation Month is the fi rst and only nation-wide marketing campaign to focus exclusively on Canada’s renovation industry. For more than two decades, Renovation Month has played a significant role in establishing renovation as a professional activity and positioning the Canadian Home Builders’ Association (CHBA) as the voice of the residential renovation industry in Canada. At the centre of Renovation Month is the local association’s campaign,such as Manitoba Home Builders Association, designed to inform the public about the many aspects of home renovation and encourage them to work with a professional renovator. Th is year’s Renovation Month is all about how to Renovate with Confidence – Go With a Pro. The campaign is supported by

a number of images and backgrounders found on CHBA’s website that drive home the benefits and peace of mind that come with hiring a professional who does things the right way. As you may already know, the renovation industry is currently facing challenges as underground contractors attempt to woo customers by promising to waive taxes by performing cash jobs. As such, the homeowner will likely be left with no written materials outlining the details of the agreement, leaving themselves vulnerable to be taken advantage of. As I’ve mentioned numerous times in the past, gett ing your agreement in writing is top priority when negotiating your renovation. The “Get it in Writing” slogan is now a national statement, echoed loudly through the newly-updated CHBA website HiringaContractor.com If you’re looking for some renovation tips, it’s defi nitely a good place to start. The national RenoMark program Ensuring that Canadian homeowners are working with reputable contractors was the principle idea behind the RenoMark program launched by BILD in 2001. The program addressed the growing negative publicity generated largely by rogue home improvement contractors and branded as “renovation horror stories” by the media. Today, RenoMark’s popularity has grown nation-wide with participation from 29 home builders’ associations across the country, with that number still growing! Renovators bearing the programs’ recognizable black and white logo refer to it as a credible reference to ensure a homeowner’s peace of mind while keeping their promise to honour our Association’s Code of Ethics as well as a renovation-specific Code of Conduct. RenoMark even offers a trade-specific search feature on its website at RenoMark.ca Th is tool is customizable to the homeowner’s geographical region and is the quickest and easiest way to locate a RenoMark contractor nearest to you.

M

arking a 25th anniversary in any venture is cause for celebration, but there’s something about achieving that milestone within the home renovations and construction market, one that is subject to economic swings and supply-and-demand highs and lows, that really distinguishes true professionals from the rest of the pack. That’s the story behind Character Homes. Brian Contant launched the company in 1984 along with his partner, a fellow Norwood Flats neighbour, when Brian was still in university with sights on becoming an industrial arts teacher. Teaching jobs were scarce back then and Brian and his partner continued working at their fledgling company. Brian recalls those salad days. “We started under the name of Character Builders. After

about 9 years we changed the name to Character Homes because people still weren’t sure what we did. During the day we both wore tool belts and did the building, while at night we did the estimates and made the calls.” Character Homes prospered during the late eighties. “Those were very buoyant times,” says Brian, “and were some of the very best years ever in the Winnipeg housing industry.” Right from the start, Character Homes did as much as 95 per cent of its total work on home renovations in many desirable areas of the Winnipeg including Norwood Flats, River Heights, and Fort Garry. But in 1990, the industry screeched to a halt as the GST came into effect for new home starts and renovations. “People weren’t interested in paying the GST, so for about 18 months it was very, very quiet.” “My partner and I bought another company and I continued on operating Character Homes. From 1990 to 1999, the industry still wasn’t the best industry to be in by any means, it was still tough sledding all around. Then around 2000 to 2002, the industry started to gain momentum and I could see the potential to be successful.” Brian welcomed Brad Sveinson to Character Homes in 2000. Brad is a third generation journeyman carpenter. ”I framed my first cottage with my grandfather when I was 12, 37 years ago,” says Brad. Brian and Brad make a strong team, with Brad handling the design work and marketing aspects of the company. “When we got together, we set out to position

It takes a very committed team to build and renovate homes. Those relationships are very important to us. We couldn’t do the work and have the happy clients that we do without having good relationships with our trades and our employees. They always come to bat for us.”

2010 RenoMark Renovation Awards THE 2010 MANITOBA HOME BUILDERS ASSOCIATION RENOMARK RENOVATION

Awards represent the most outstanding work done in the renovation field in the Province last year. We are proud to be able to offer 44 projects completed by 10 different renovators. Categories in which these projects are judged include: Additions, Bathrooms, Kitchens, Basement, Exterior and Whole House. A qualified panel of 8 judges reviews each entry in each category, carefully going over before and after photos, looking at blueprints, reviewing design and materials, considering items such as space utilization before rendering their decision regarding the various award winners. The award winners are announced at a ceremony on November 5. Th is is a highlight in the Manitoba Home Builders Association year. It has been a very busy year for the renovation industry in Manitoba. Manitobans renovate more than any other province in Canada, spending more on average (over $8,000 per renovation project) than anywhere else. Th is can be partially att ributed to the fact that Winnipeg has the 3rd oldest housing stock in Canada, behind only Halifax and Montreal. Older houses need more renovating. They require increased energy efficiency upgrades and many people are opting for greener alternatives. Reduced water usage continues to grow in importance to homeowners. Technology and improved building products have progressed rapidly in recent years. Professional renovators keep up to date with all of these developments and pass this important knowledge on to their clients. An MHBA RenoMark renovator maintains his professional education and training through courses and workshops, literature reviews, sessions with manufacturers and sales representatives and information sharing with RenoMark renovators across the country though the Canadian Home Builders Association. While it is true that the renovation business is busy, there is a misconception that good renovators are impossible to fi nd. Those that try to circumvent the process by way of avoiding taxes and permits are leaving the consumer in an extremely vulnerable position. Character Homes The kitchen took over the space of the original eating area which provided an amazing amount of workspace. The kitchen is breathtaking with solid surface countertops, an added built in display & storage area, and new tile flooring throughout. The living room became the dining room, with the entire space opening up to an expansive sunroom with garden doors leading directly to the pool and the hot tub. The island has a floating raised bar top that enhances the free flowing open feeling of the entire rear of the house. On the second floor, a 12'x 16' walk-in closet was added. The bathroom took over the original walk-in closet. A large private balcony off the master bedroom was also built.

i.r.i.s. Contractors The homeowners wanted to increase the size of their home in order to create sufficient room for the family they were planning on starting. They desired that the home still fit into the neighbourhood and not to look like a brand new home in an older area. They wanted lots of natural light with three bedrooms, a guest bath, and the master bedroom to face the front street with an ensuite and walk-in closet. All this was to be achieved while they lived on the main floor. The work was completed quickly and efficiently in order to limit our time without a roof to only two weeks.

i.r.i.s. Contractors The homeowners wish list included a three car garage, with master bedroom and ensuite above. They also wanted to renovate the current kitchen/ bedroom area and create a large eat-in kitchen. The kitchen layout with custom cabinets and tile back splash, the ensuite with deck mounted bubble tub, custom tiled shower enclosure with body jets and programmable in-floor heat throughout came together seamlessly and easily.

oswald Constructions Ltd. The client’s family consisted of 5 very busy people. They loved their recent purchase of a 100 year old farmhouse on the Red River but needed more public space. Also, with 3 extra drivers coming along, a large garage was desired. Because of their busy lives, building with maintenance-free products, as well as upgrading the existing exterior finish with new maintenance-free products was high in the needs list. The extra space gave them their wish list of a large games room with bar area, work out room, 2 extra washrooms, an extra bedroom, an extra kitchen/butler's pantry, separate utility room, and a large mudroom adjoining the oversized garage.

sakiyama Construction The homeowners loved their River Heights 2-storey but found it short on space and functionality. Built in the 1930s, little had been done over the years to modernize the home. The owners identified three concerns: the need for a mudroom, a spacious modern kitchen, and a larger closet/dressing area as part of the master bedroom. The solution was a 2-storey addition to the rear of the home. Added space included a main floor family room off the fully renovated kitchen plus a new mudroom/rear foyer. The second floor addition consisted of a new master bedroom ensuite with walk-through closet, separate shower and bath, and office area.

all Canadian renovations This renovation involved an addition both at the front of the house as well as the back. We worked with the homeowners and the engineer to determine the new floor plan. The addition added a living room along the back, enlarged the kitchen, and created a much-needed foyer for the two hockey-playing girls to unload gear. The preexisting part of the house was gutted to the studs and brought up to code with electrical, gas lines, plumbing, and insulation.

southwynn Homes Ltd. The owners of this home wanted to add space that blended into the existing home without looking like an addition. The architects designed and provided drawings for a two storey addition, complete with a full basement. The new space was to include a new great room and office on the main floor, a new master bedroom complete with an extra large ensuite and walk in closet on the 2nd floor. The addition was linked to the existing home by a stair case and entryway on the main floor, and a bridged open hallway on the 2nd level. The basement was to include an exercise room, family room, nannie's room, washroom and furnace room and was linked to the existing basement by cutting an opening through the existing foundation.

all Canadian renovations Before work could begin on this addition, part of the existing 100 year structure had to be removed and hauled away. The addition created additional square footage and included a new entrance. The addition joins into the existing structure seamlessly. All of the windows were made as casement to maximize the comfort level in the summer and to make it much warmer during the winter. The homeowners are delighted with the addition and are enjoying their new space.

sakiyama Construction This lower level was developed in a spacious 45-year-old bungalow constructed on piles with a central basement. The minimally-developed concrete basement which had been used for storage/utilities had a structural slab floor surrounded by piled grade beams creating three crawl spaces. The wish list was long – games room with wet bar and sculpture niche, powder room, utility area and walk-in closet – but the space was small, 480 sq ft.

southwynn Homes Ltd. This lower level renovation consisted of making the most of the architectural assets of the walk-out basement, the prime feature being the wall of windows that serves as a portal of natural light and an outlook to a spectacular exterior view. The design solution included a spacious sitting area with rounded fireplace, and a wall of glass that divided the sitting area from the TV viewing room. A large open bar complete with a custom built in maple wine unit, was constructed over the sump pump. Every design component in the lower level achieved the transfer of natural light, and created open yet cozy/comfortable space.

trikor Builders The homeowners wanted a lower level that had a completely different look from the other floors of their ten year old two storey home. The look they desired was European with clean lines and a modern, contemporary look. Their requirements were a guest bedroom with ample storage to accommodate family from out of town, a spa-like bathroom, media room with wet bar, built in corner office, and a play area for the kids. The wet bar features tilt out upper cabinet doors with glass inserts and a stunning glass tile backsplash. The gloss laminate flooring, sleek gas fireplace, and simple cabinetry with flat panel doors, all add to the clean lines and give this lower level a modern look that will be high style for years to come.

all Canadian renovations This was a full basement with very little development. The previous owners had installed some Styrofoam to the walls to retain heat and was not up to code to meet fire regulations. The homeowners wanted a bedroom in the corner of the basement to accommodate guests. Since there were no windows; a fire egress window was installed complete with window well and drainage to the weeping tiles. They also wanted a laundry room complete with ironing area, a media area, an exercise area for the treadmill and a storage area. A small office workspace was accomplished by installing a pony wall to create a measure of openness to the rest of the basement.

Dynasty Bathrooms This project centered around an ensuite bathroom from 1980. The room was completely gutted to the studs. Upon gutting the bathroom the chimney was discovered in the wall cavity. The year previous the home owner had changed the furnace to a high efficiency furnace meaning no chimney. We then expanded the walk-in shower to the full width of the room making a nice 32” x 48” custom shower stall. We used a waterproofing system called Schuter to prevent any type of water leakage. Glass tiles were used as listello in the shower stall to compliment the RonBow glass countertop on the vanity. White ceramic tiles on the shower wall and floor give the space a clean and crisp look. A French door was added to let natural light from the bedroom into the ensuite.

trikor Builders The goal was to have an open concept, multi purpose lower level that would match the style of the upper levels of this five year old home. A gas fireplace, built in bookshelves, entertainment wall, and wet bar were all high priorities. Maple bookshelves were built on site and stained to match the bar cabinetry. A sleek wall mount gas fireplace with euro concave surround adds style as well as function on cold nights in front of the TV. The wet bar boasts glass display shelving, a wine fridge as well as a custom made ‘keg fridge’ with beer on tap!

Dynasty Bathrooms The objective for this bathroom was to update the 70s décor and to give the customer more functionality. They needed more storage in the cabinets and wanted a two person tub as well as a shower stall which had not existed. A custom built oak vanity was built complete with crown moldings, large mirror, pot lights and plenty of storage. We then custom made a 1 1/2” thick granite top with a Kohler under mount basin and Hansgrohe Metro S chrome faucets to provide a finishing touch to the elegance of the cabinetry. The pot lights are contained in a valance around the perimeter of the room, and create texture and warmth throughout the space. A dimmer switch allows for adjustable brightness. We replaced a non efficient 13L toilet with a sleek Kohler Persaude dual flush toilet that is both attractive and water conscientious. CONTINUED ON PAGE 29…

i.r.i.s. Contractors This project started with a bathroom built in the 70’s. It used a very good sized footprint of 120 sq. ft. and was chopped up into three very small unattractive areas. The client wanted to use the space to its fullest and create a large open spa-like environment that allowed for as much natural light as possible.

trikor Builders The homeowner was longing for a luxury bathroom where they could retreat from a hectic lifestyle of a dual income family with 2 young children. Since there was no room for this on the upper levels, they opted to build one on the lower level. The homeowners wanted a very modern look with clean lines and European styling. The vanity was raised off the floor and finished in flat panel maple to compliment the European styling. The wall niche with tile detail above the bathtub gave some storage space while adding some artwork in the form of glass tile. A tile bench was added in the shower to provide versatility and comfort while still maintaining the clean lines.

trikor Builders The most important requirement for this bathroom was that it needed to have a sauna. Not a little 2 person infrared model but a traditional 5 person, cedar sauna, heated with a stainless steel electric sauna heater controlled with a digital thermostat. The second must have was a 2 person custom tile shower complete with body sprays. The shower was constructed with a solid front wall instead of full glass to give some privacy and also provide a mounting wall for the body sprays. Porcelain tile continues from inside the shower to the floor of the bathroom and sauna. The tile floor is heated of course so that there is no risk of cold feet when exiting the shower or sauna.

all Canadian renovations The homeowners wanted both a soaker tub and a walk-in shower in a tiny bathroom. They also wanted to bring in natural light from the bedroom windows and create an open concept suite. They also wanted to create a modern spa-like aesthetic with warm, natural colors and textures. This master bathroom involved significant reconfiguring of the existing space to transform not only the tired and cramped 70’s bathroom, but the master suite as a whole.

Hands-on Design The clients were looking to renovate their main floor 3-piece bathroom which was quite dated and create a modern look. The shower walls were completely retiled with a 12’’ ceramic tile and accompanied by a 3’’ strip of glass accent tile. The floors were stripped and a heat mat with a programmable thermostat was installed underneath the new marble tile floors. New fixtures for the shower and sink were added, along with an air jetted tub and dual flush toilet. A 3 panel glass shower door replaced the old shower curtain, and a granite countertop replaced the existing plain top. All of the millwork was redone in a maple shaker style. For improved lighting and some visual interest, a rectilinear and a curvilinear bulkhead hold recessed pot lights in the ceiling.

all Canadian renovations Space was at a premium. The door couldn’t even open without hitting the tub. To solve this, we stole space from everywhere possible. Tightening up plumbing to remove an awkward wall build-out, moving the tub wall 12” to create more space, and using frameless glass shower doors and a pedestal vanity instead of a bulky cabinet created more visual space. A shower niche further pushed the wall out so no shelving had to come into the shower area. Storage is contained in a large mirrored medicine cabinet. The pedestal vanity created challenges as well because the supply lines and drains were running across the inside of the old cabinet and had to be re-routed into the wall. To achieve the feel of a luxury master bath, we added in-floor heat under marble tiles, and a detailed wall of natural stone behind the vanity. The costly mosaic tiles were added for detail but kept to a minimum to keep the job on a tight budget.

southwynn Homes Ltd. Our clients vision of transforming their 50 year old dated home into a beautiful Cape Cod design resulted in the mobilization of Southwynn Homes exemplary trades and suppliers. The complex plans included replacing all exterior windows, building a larger front porch with pillars and gables, changing the roof from a cottage roof to a gable roof, removing all stucco and replacing it with siding. Old overhangs and facia were cut back and new maintenance-free aluminum soffit, facia and trough were installed.

Hands-on Design The front of the residence lacked aesthetic appeal and had no curb appeal. The client was looking for an attractive look that required no maintenance finishes. The existing stucco on the north front of the house was taken off. 1’’ rigid insulation was added to upgrade the R factor. Hardie Board bevel siding was added to change the previous boring streetscape. Groundhog anchors were added to support the new gable roof over the new landing which was constructed from CrossTimbers composite decking. The handrails were also constructed from a no maintenance composite material. The columns were made out of creosol exterior plywood and painted. On the underside of the porch, a curved tongue and groove pine ceiling was created to counterbalance the rectilinear lines. The color white was intentionally chosen for the railing, siding, roof, and posts to create a simple clean look.

Hands-on Design The client wanted to improve the appearance of the front of their house while retaining the existing stone. The yard elevation was reconfigured to accommodate the new sloping curved concrete sidewalk. The existing garage was faced on the North, South and East sides with light beige Hardie Board bevel siding to complement the existing stone. A 24’’ overhang was added on the gable end of the garage. The planter boxes were reshaped and capped with limestone for seating. Tapered columns were designed to dress up the entrance. On the underside of the porch, tongue and groove cedar ceiling was created to soften the lines of the house. A gable roof was constructed over the front open landing and tied into the existing roof.

Harwood Design Builders The key objective for this space was to create more storage and a new, modern look to replace the lackluster traditional kitchen that is the central gathering place for family and friends. The kitchen and dining room which overlooks the family room is a masterpiece in modern kitchen design and incorporates both form and function that the owners are thrilled with. The up-to the ceiling clean white cabinetry provides a striking contrast to the cherry wood stained lower cabinets. Custom niches for wine, cookbooks, china and linens ensure everything is accessible for every meal and every occasion. A central information centre with computer nook and office supply drawer helps this family on the go keep in touch and up to date with each other’s busy schedules.

Harwood Design Builders The original space, like most houses built in the 1970’s was compartmentalized by function, with kitchen, dining and living room all in separate rooms. The busy family wanted a new open concept area that brought these three living areas together and break free of the old model. The ultimate transformation included the removal of the walls that defined each space as well as the stairwell. This produced dramatic results because it opened up sightlines between the kitchen and living room for an immediate sense of spaciousness. The kitchen is a gallery style with an 11-foot island that defines the major centre for activities that take place in the kitchen. The cabinets are all bamboo and were chosen for their eco and durability qualities. All outside wall cabinets are bright white and add to the airiness while the island was finished in a deep caramel to add to the transformation and modernization of this space.

Harwood Design Builders The owners of this 80 year old home were ready to bring it up to date. Their wish list for the renovation included, more storage, a refreshing lighter palette, and more light, to name but a few. The owner, who happens to be an architect called upon her expertise to come up with a design that she and her husband agreed would be the ultimate solution for this key area of the home. The small gallery kitchen was completely demolished and restructured with their goals at the forefront. Classic white cabinetry provided clean lines but provided not just another pretty face. The home owners asked for increased storage capacity and that is exactly what they got with all the bells and whistles, including pull outs, sliding drawers and other unique storage solutions. In the end, all of the high end products resulted in a high end finish for this gallery style kitchen.

Harwood Design Builders The overall objective of this project was to take a 1960’s home into the new millennium with a complete renovation of the kitchen and dining room. Toffee-stained wide plank and distressed bamboo floors were used throughout with a transition to the kitchen area where new floor tiles were installed over a heat mat for those cold floor winter mornings. Teak Veneer Echo wood cabinets were used through the kitchen with a floor-to-ceiling glassed-in display case for family treasures with a modern appeal. To add to the modern finishing; a new product called Ice Stix was used for the back splash walls. At the social center of this new space, an 8' x 3', bar height centerpiece dining room table was designed and installed. An imported Italian Fusion Granite top was used as the table top and was strategically lit by a very large hand forged light fixture encased by an 8 foot recessed ceiling.

all Canadian renovations The homeowner had a long wish list for a 12’x12’ kitchen with pantries, an island with seating, a large fridge, a wine rack, a desk area, and more. This kitchen was designed and built for a middle-aged couple and their teenage children who all liked to cook and have friends over. The wall between the kitchen and dining room was opened up to make the space feel larger. New cabinets, bulkheads, cork flooring, granite counters, and backsplash tile was included.

all Canadian renovations The homeowners frequently hosted parties and needed room for beverages, whether espresso or wine. They also wanted to combine a computer station/home office into the cabinetry. There was a need to make the room work for kids. The old raised bar counter was too high and precarious for the little ones to use, and there was no space for craft projects and toys. They also wished to add counter and storage space. The old corner pantry and corner island took up a lot of space but didn’t function optimally, and the raised counter was too narrow to eat a quick meal at. A small 10’ x 10’ addition at the back of the house was added to allow for a large new kitchen that worked for toddlers and adults alike.

trikor Builders This 25 year old home was in need of a better use of space in the kitchen & dining room as well as cosmetic updates. The homeowners wanted to take down the dividing wall that adjoined the dining room to create an open-flow plan while gaining more cabinet & counter space. A peninsula lit from above by pendant lighting, divides the kitchen from the dining room and serves as a seamless buffet for serving guests at the dining room table. The entrance to the kitchen from the hallway was moved 3’ over to allow for more countertop space but still leaves room for a large pantry/fridge wall on the opposite side. Pull out pantries were installed beside the fridge which instantly multiplied the storage capacity.

Hands-on Design The clients wanted to modernize their dated kitchen. The idea was to create a series of multi-tasking stations. The existing floor was removed and replaced with reclaimed hardwood flooring. The cabinets were finished in a maple shaker style with granite countertop and a light brown tile backsplash. An island was added in order to provide the client with more work surface. Stainless steel appliances and microwave hood extractor replaced the old units. The breakfast prep area was designed to organize appliances. A wine rack and liquor storage were also added for organization. The porcelain sink was chosen to contrast the maple cabinets. The bulkheads at various heights were designed to add visual interest and accommodate the recessed lighting.

oswald Construction The clients wanted to renovate their 1960s, 210 sq. ft. kitchen space plus a 40 sq. ft. back pantry area. They also wanted to open the space up to the dining/living room/front entry area and upgrade those areas. The clients are delighted with how the new engineered beams opened the kitchen space up. The new cappuccino colored Maple cabinets fulfilled all the client’s desires of having efficient modern storage space, not to mention creating a stunning look. New solid surface quartz based Cambria counter tops provide miles of hygienic, easy to clean prep space. A second prep sink within the island allow for multiple cooks to work.

all Canadian renovations The homeowners wanted a large kitchen. This meant that much of the main living area would be affected and that a load bearing wall would be removed. Removal of the load bearing wall required participation from an engineer, drawings and permits. In order to create a clean unobstructed ceiling, structural work was required in the attic. Once the area was opened up in came new flooring throughout, upgraded electrical and custom millwork. New baseboards and trim were stained maple to match the cabinetry.

all Canadian renovations This extensive project involved the complete gutting of a century-old house, involving reconfiguring the floor plan, removing all the plaster walls and ceilings, adding an HRV system, and insulating all exterior walls and attic. A completely new kitchen was reconfigured and renovated, a custom fireplace feature wall was designed and constructed, and the two new bathrooms (and one powder room) were reconstructed and added. Classic, natural materials like the Bianco Venatin marble tiles, solid maple flooring, maple butcher block vanity, and tumbled marble backsplash add historic value. The homeowners love the new look and functionality of their home.

Character Homes Ltd. In the living/dining areas, the end wall was extended to accommodate 2 window seats and a gas fireplace that brings detail and interest into the space. The entire exterior was refitted with 2” of extruded polystyrene (R10), 30 year Cambridge shingles, maintenance-free soffit, fascia & eavestrough, stucco, cement board siding and cultured stone to replicate a ranch style home. The basement was gutted and revived with a new layout conducive to the leisure life of the owners. Large windows were cut in to the south wall of the existing basement, flooding the home theatre and billiards areas with natural light. The home received the all new ductwork, the installation of a 95% efficient gas furnace, new air conditioning and the installation of a Heat Recovery Ventilation system. The electrical was upgraded to a 100 amp service with electric radiant heat installed in all tiled floor areas.

sakiyama Construction This home in Wildewood was originally a 1.5-storey, 3-bedroom house built in the 1940’s. It was subsequently modified by an addition in 1985 to a 2-storey with an attached 2-car garage to the rear. This renovation added a bedroom, walk-in closet and ensuite bathroom on the 2nd floor and a kitchen/living room on the main level. Despite the changes, the home lacked functionality and space. Thus a whole house renovation was undertaken that involved converting the garage into a family room, reconfiguring the kitchen and living room, adding a new rear foyer, adding a new master bedroom above the new family room, reconfiguring both second level bathrooms and modifying existing bedrooms.

southwynn Homes This existing 1200 sq. ft. storey and a half needed a complete facelift and reconstruction. The project included demolishing the existing detached garage and building a new garage, building a main floor sun room addition, remodelling the kitchen, two bathrooms, and reshaping the 2nd level. New windows had to be installed, along with the construction of a new front porch, a rear deck, and new stucco for the entire house. The foundation was wrapped in Delta wrap, and new weeping tile was connected to the sump pit. New granular back fill was installed to provide better drainage.

Character Homes Ltd. The desire of this client was to have a new home in the Norwood Flats area. The home started as a 1940’s – 1,300 square foot, 1 ½ story and ended up being a modern 2,000 square foot 2 storey. The home was typical of the era-small front entry, smaller rear entry at the top of the basement stairs, all the rooms separate and enclosed. The second floor had 2 long and skinny bedrooms with 4’6” side walls that compromised the effective area of the rooms. A 2-piece bath had been stuck into a closet area at the top of the stairs. The needs and requirements for this home were 2 large bedrooms and a bath for kids, a master suite with large closet and ensuite, and to open up the main floor to create flow. There was also a need to create a rear entry that could handle a young family and bring into being a finished basement that takes advantage of the space available. It was to have a modern feel to the interior but, at the same time blend in with the neighbourhood.

southwynn Homes The existing 750 sq. ft. bungalow situated on a beautiful Red River lot was to be converted into a 2 storey home. The 2nd level was to provide for a new master bedroom complete with a walk-in closet, and 5-piece ensuite, along with access to a 2nd floor deck overlooking the river. Two other bedrooms and a main bathroom would complete the use of the 2nd floor addition space. The main floor was to be renovated by installing a new kitchen, and by converting existing rooms into an office, spare bedroom, living room and dining room.

trikor Builders The homeowners had been in their home for 30 years and knew it was time for a change. They loved their neighbourhood, so decided on a major renovation instead of finding a new home. The first order was to add a 322 sq ft family room with garden doors out to the exterior. The kitchen also needed to be reworked to accommodate the entrance into the addition. One bedroom was removed to make a larger living/dining area with an open great room concept. The goal was to add space as well as create an open concept kitchen/ dining/living area for entertaining. Cabinets needed to be removed to gain access to the addition but more cabinet space needed to be added somehow.

all Canadian renovations This project began with a main floor bathroom renovation of this split level 70’s home. After the homeowners saw what we could do with the bathroom they quickly got the renovation bug and decided to expand their project to the kitchen and family room. But why stop there? They realized that the upper level was also in need of much upgrading and proceeded to have us design a new ensuite as well. Careful detail of the curved river stone was taken to ensure a smooth decorative finish in the ensuite. The kitchen and family room were designed with a common flow of glass and marble tiling around the fireplace and kitchen backsplash.

Hands-on Design The client wanted a complete update to her house built in 1956. As part of her wish list she desired a complete renovation of the 2500 sq. ft. main floor and build a small addition 9’x15’. The unfinished basement was in need of a massive transformation. This project involved taking out the existing bearing wall that separated the kitchen and living room. An open concept kitchen, living and dining room was created, achieving continuity between the spaces. In the foyer, millwork was added for privacy and a visual separation between entrance and living area. The laundry room was expanded with millwork storage. All bathrooms were renovated including a handicap bathroom complete with handicap shower stall, and the ensuite washroom in the master bedroom. The entire main floor was replaced with reclaimed hardwood floors. In the basement the 2 bedrooms had egress windows installed, adding more natural light.

all Canadian renovations This renovation involved an addition both at the front of the house as well as the back. We worked with the homeowners and the engineer to determine the new floor plan. The addition added a living room along the back, enlarged the kitchen, and created a much-needed foyer for the two hockey-playing girls to unload gear. The preexisting part of the house was gutted to the studs and brought up to code with electrical, gas lines, plumbing, and insulation.

celebrating its 100th year, bears evidence of many diverse decorating styles from years gone by, as well as the renovation efforts of its former owners. For Marg and Allan, it was the kitchen in their Wolseley home, built in 1911, that had been through many reincarnations,

starting out as an outdoor porch at the back of the house, then into a draft y kitchen/addition lacking adequate insulation, and fi nally, a 70’s style kitchen with a somber palette of dark ceramic floor tiles, wood paneling, and dark coloured cabinetry. The couple has coped with the kitchen for over 25 years, so when the decision was made to do a complete kitchen renovation,

no surprise that they were determined to make things light and bright. “We also knew it needed a new layout”, says Marg, “one that could accommodate modern appliances and counter space.” Marg and Allan called on Roger Brodeur of Renovations Plus to make the magic happen. And like most renovations to homes of this vintage, structural

surprises were uncovered. In this case it was the floor that needed attention. Roger says, “We used groundhog steel anchors from inside the house to prop up the back corner. Then we completely stripped the floor, because it was crooked. There were actually 3 different levels to it. and then we strapped new floor joists right across and leveled out the floor.” Once that was completed, the hardwood flooring was installed and the older-style windows were replaced along with an additional to window to ensure that the space would be fi lled with natural light. It grounds the cabinetry.” Brushed stainless steel handles provide gleaming contrasts and the Cambria quartz countertop in ‘Kingston’ provides a mott led pattern of speckled grey, black and a hint of beige to pick up on other elements in the room. Wayne Barnett of Kitchen Designs by Décor worked with Marg and Allan in

choosing their kitchen features that include many pull-outs and drawers equipped with full extension Blu motion soft-close mechanisms. Instead of a traditional Lazy Susan, the corner is fitted with a drawer that is exactly the same shape but pulls straight out for maximum accessibility. A pull-out spice centre and pan rack system on either side of the stove keeps needed ingredients and utensils close at hand, while a double pull-out garbage bin system offers easy access. We’re really happy with how that turned out.” Marg confesses that taking on a renovation of this scale came with some trepidation. “But from the moment we met Roger, we felt that he was someone that we could work with. Our experience with him proved to be true. He was responsive to any questions we had throughout the process, and if there were problems, he addressed them right away and his trades people were excellent.”

LOTS OF PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT INTERIOR DESIGN –

at least, they think they do! Now, those would-be designers are getting the chance to strut their stuff in the new series, Inside the Box with Ty Pennington, co-hosted by Canadian designer Janette Ewen. We’ve followed Ty diligently from TLC’s Trading Spaces to Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, and now this carpenter and designer extraordinaire has brought his talent to Canada! The show puts two keen amateurs – they could be relatives, friends or neighbours – head to head in an all-out interior design competition. Sound easy? There’s a twist: the contestants must each incorporate the contents of a crate, hand-picked by Ty, into their themed room design. With just two days to complete their rooms, these armchair designers have got their work cut out for them. HOME DÉCOR AND RENOVATIONS With the premise of your new show, thinking “inside the box,” what do you hope to teach show participants and viewers about home design? TY PENNINGTON My goal with the show is to help people who love design like I do to look at rooms and what goes into them completely differently. Trying to create good design out of unusual products and materials is not as difficult as you might think and the result can be stunning. We prove that on our show. HDR What is the biggest challenge with designing a space in just 48 hours? TP The challenge is time itself. But in many ways, it encourages good organization and execution. If you are forced into a situation where every minute matters, you’re not going to waste time and often, that makes a person focus more effectively and come up with some more creative ideas than if he or she spent a month doing it. HDR When choosing the crate contents, how to you go about deciding what to include, and what is the purpose of this approach to design? TP First, I look at the rooms and come up with a major element I want to design around – wallpaper, fabric, sheet metal, whatever. Then, I build the crate contents knowing that the items have to be usable in both rooms. I know that everything in that box can be used to create an innovative and spectacular design. The question is whether the would-be designers can see through

IT’S AN OPPORTUNITY TO EXPRESS YOURSELF THROUGH COLOUR AND TEXTURE AND FORM AND FUNCTION. their own design process to tap into mine and in the process, they get more creative in their own space. HDR This is a very playful way of designing a space – do you think people take home décor too seriously? TP Absolutely, yes. Design should be fun. It’s an opportunity to express yourself through colour and texture and form and function. You want to feel good in your space and the first step to doing that is to feel good about designing it. HDR In your experience and having worked abroad, how does Canada’s approach to design differ from the U.S. and internationally? TP I think Canadians are far more laid back than Americans are in general, and I love the European influences you see across Canada that you don’t necessarily get in mid-America. HDR As a designer, where do you look for inspiration? TP Mostly nature – I love how colours work together in nature all through the year and can spark ideas on how to mix and match. Lots of people don’t put red and orange together but the maple leaf does it perfectly in fall. I also love to look at architectural details and repeat patterns. Sometimes I’ll see a shadow cast off an iron gate or through lattice work and I’ll snap a photo of it to try and replicate it in a design for my own furniture or fabric lines. HDR At the end of each episode of Inside the Box with Ty Pennington, what constitutes a “winning design?” TP Wow, let me tell you. Choosing the winner is the absolute hardest part of the show. Janette and I take a couple of things into consideration. First, did they go outside their own comfort zone? That’s huge. Second, we look at how much of the box was used and how. Someone may not use everything in the box, but what they do use is so dramatic and different that the person edges out the competition. And finally we look at solutions. Everyone we have on the show has a design problem. What’s inside the box is designed to solve that problem. Do they do that, or do they just throw a bunch of stuff together and hope it’s good enough? HDR What’s your favourite part of the show? TP My favourite part of the show is the part I don’t get to see – when the box arrives. It’s awesome watching the footage of [contestants] combing through the box and reacting to what they find. I wish we could do an entire episode just on the reactions. It’s absolutely hilarious to see the look of anticipation replaced with the look of fear and bewilderment as someone unpacks 6,000 paperclips and thinks, “What am I supposed to do with these?”

n Monday, October 4th, Craftline Countertops opened the doors for the first time to its brand new, shopperfriendly, retail showroom at 1500 Regent Avenue, right across from Costco. With plenty of parking that’s readily accessible, the showroom will be easy to find. The new showroom offers customers over 2400 square feet of display space dedicated to an amazing array of countertops including laminates, granite, quartz, solid surface, and wood veneers. “The showroom has been designed with all the bells and whistles that make for a wonderful shopping experience,” says John Anderlum, National Sales Manager for Craftline Countertops. The spacious floor plan allows for an outstanding display of large-size countertop samples that takes the guesswork out of how a countertop will look once it’s installed in the customer’s home. “It’s a one-stop shop,” says John. “We like to help customers with as much or as little of a purchase that they desire. If they’re looking for the odd laminate top for a do-it-yourself project, we have something for them. If someone is coming in and really doesn’t have a clue what’s all involved and they want someone to come in

and look after the whole job pertaining to countertops, we’re able to handle that as well.” The former Craftline Countertops showroom was located at 485 Archibald Street and was housed under the same roof as the Craftline manufacturing facility which will continue to produce its full line of quality laminate countertops. “All of our products are built right here in Winnipeg so when you’re dealing with us, you truly dealing with the people who will be manufacturing it,” says John. Jim Patrick, lead retail sales representative for the Regent Avenue showroom says, “I’ve spent 10 years working in the shop doing custom fabrication, and worked my way through every position in the shop before I came into sales. Bringing that knowledge from the shop into the showroom really helps in explaining the products to the customer.” “While the showroom is a new beginning for our retail operation, at the same time, all of our experienced staff members have moved over from the Archibald Street location. We’ve added one full-time and one part-time staff member to keep up with the

anticipated traffic flow, bringing our staff up to 5 skilled customer service representatives.” John adds, “As Sales Manager, I’m floored by how often customers will contact me directly after dealing with our showroom people. They tell me that our product lines are very fairly priced but what really set it apart was the attention to detail and the product knowledge that our staff delivered that really made the experience so informative and valuable in making their final purchasing decision.” “It’s very gratifying to hear that kind of feedback,” says John,

“because we want our staff to help our customers make their purchases as opposed to ‘selling’ them. It means that our sales people really explore the customer’s needs and try to match them with the correct product.” John and Jim are looking forward to seeing both existing and new customers, whether retail or dealer, at the new Regent Avenue location. “I think people can expect a superior brand of service at our new location,” says John, “and we look forward to welcoming them there.”

Home maintenance tips for fall

Protect your home & your investment!

YOUR HOUSE IS MORE THAN THE PLACE WHERE YOU LIVE,

it's your home and your most important investment. Carrying out a regular program of maintenance and repairs can help you protect that investment, and help keep your family safe and sound in every season. In Fall, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation suggests you take a few minutes each week to perform the following simple tasks, which will help you to avoid the most common — and costly — problems before they occur. Some of these tasks include: » Check and clean or replace your furnace fi lters on a monthly basis during the heating season. » Have your furnace or heating system serviced by a qualified service company (every two years for a gas furnace and every year for an oil furnace). » Bleed air from the hot water radiators, and turn the gas furnace pilot light on. » Vacuum electric baseboard heaters to remove dust, remove the grilles on forced-air heating systems and vacuum inside the ducts. » If you have a heat recovery ventilator (HRV), clean the outside air intake grill, the fi lters inside the unit, and the core, and pour water down the condensate drain to test it.

» Have well water tested for quality. » Check the sump pump and line to ensure proper operation. There should be no line obstructions or visible leaks. » If you have a septic tank, measure the sludge and scum to determine if it needs to be emptied before spring. Tanks should be pumped out at least once every three years. » Replace window screens with storm windows, and ensure all windows, doors and skylights shut tightly, including the door between your house and garage. » Ensure that the ground around your home slopes away from the foundation wall to prevent water from draining into the basement. » Clean leaves from eavestroughs and downspouts to ensure proper drainage from the roof, and check chimneys for nests or other obstructions. » Cover the outside of air conditioners, and drain and store outdoor hoses. Close the valve to the outdoor hose connection, and drain the faucet (unless it is frost proof). » Winterize landscaping by storing outdoor furniture, preparing gardens and, if necessary, protecting young trees or bushes for winter.

MAKE SCHOOL LUNCHES EASY. Designate one cabinet in the kitchen for school snacks

only. Transfer foods to airtight containers – you’ll save space because they stack well, and the food will keep longer. Pack lunches the night before and refrigerate. Assign an area in the fridge for school lunches and drinks. With smaller children, encourage independence by storing their foods low enough for the litt le ones to reach.

INVOLVE THE KIDS. You don’t have to do everything yourself. Teach your kids how to

do age-appropriate tasks and give them a weekly chore list. You will be helping them to develop important life skills. After you show them how to do each task, post a step-bystep checklist for them to follow when they do it on their own (use pictures for kids who are too young to read). Th is will allow them to work independently and gain confidence in their newly acquired skills.

CLEAN AS YOU GO. Handle small messes as they happen to save time and effort in the

long run. Rinse dirty dishes and put them in the dishwasher immediately after use, before the food hardens and sticks. If something spills in the fridge, clean it as soon as you notice. If you stain an article of clothing, pre-treat it right away. Keep wipes handy for quick bathroom and kitchen spot-cleaning.

Although simple tasks can be done at the same time, like watching television and folding laundry, important, complex activities require our undivided attention. TWO-TIMING TASKS. Double up your

simple activities and you’ll be able to do more in less time. Rather than chatt ing with a friend at the coffee shop, meet at the gym and work out together instead.

HOW’S YOUR “TO DO” LIST WORKING OUT FOR YOU? If you fi nd your “to do” list

overwhelming and ineffective, consider approaching it differently. Rather than one long list, create several short ones based on the category of the task (like errands, home, calls, computer, etc.) Keep your lists together in a small notebook that’s portable and always easily accessible.

NOW, WHERE WAS I? If you get interrupted while working on something important, use

a notebook or a sticky note to jot down where you left off. When you return to the task, you won’t waste as much time figuring out where to resume.

MULTI-TASKING REDUCES PRODUCTIVITY. Contrary to popular belief, multi-tasking may

actually lower productivity. Switching back and forth from one task to another costs time and leads to frustration. As a result, stress increases, as does the chance of error.

Assiniboine’s newest branch achieves LEED Silver lots of energy.” The black solar wall next to the branch entrance is the intake for fresh air, which every building needs. In winter, fresh air has to be warmed from as low as -30 degrees outside to +20 degrees inside. “When the sun shines through the solar wall, it warms the cold air from -30 to -10, which saves an enormous amount of energy trying to warm fresh air.”

Twenty years ago when the word ‘green’ was simply a colour in the Crayola box, Assiniboine Credit Union was building green. But this fall, the first project ACU submitted for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) consideration was awarded LEED Silver designation. With this recognition, ACU’s newest branch — on Pembina at Bairdmore — has been recognized as one of Winnipeg’s most energy-efficient buildings. In fact it is one of only six buildings in the city that are LEED certified. Only three financial institutions in the province — all credit unions — have achieved a LEED designation. “There are four LEED levels— Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum,” explains Garry Mitchell, ACU’s Vice-President of Facilities and Procurement. “Originally we were just shooting for the Certified level, but as we progressed with the build we realized that we were in the Silver range. I’m particularly proud that we managed to reach Silver within budget and without compromise.”

ACU’s legacy of building green extends beyond the rigours of LEED and includes some very practical retrofitting of older branches. Reconstruction of the downtown corporate office at 200 Main Street is currently under way and serves as another fine example of reducing, reusing and recycling.

For instance, when we rebuilt our St. Mary’s branch 20 years ago, we took it down brick by brick, sorted all the materials and donated most of it to Habitat for Humanity.”

Nu-Life Kitchens Changing the face of Winnipeg kitchens, one customer at a time

breathe new life into tired, dated kitchens throughout Winnipeg. A recent project in Southdale involved a kitchen with exposed hinges on the doors, an old-style moulding on the tops of cabinets that extended to the ceiling, moulding details on the back of the peninsula, and a valance above the sink window.

The Nu-Life Kitchens team went to work to bring the kitchen up to date by refacing the sides and fronts of the cabinet boxes in Chocolate pear and by installing new Chocolate Pear Shaker-style doors and drawer fronts. The old moulding detail on the back of peninsula and the valance above the sink window were removed to give the kitchen a clean-lined profi le. The moulding was removed that was above the cabinets that extended to the ceiling. A small moulding was added to the tops of the upper cabinets to give it a fi nished look . New hinges were installed and concealed behind the doors for a seamless fi nish. The team removed all the cabinets on the fridge wall and installed 2 large pantries on both sides of the new fridge and 2 new cabinets above the fridge. The drawers in the

pantry were installed with full extension soft-close slides. Th is has added plenty of storage space with the new pantries and added drawers. Meanwhile in Lindenwoods, a builder’s grade European-style kitchen received the Nu-life transformation to address its own issues including a desk on the left hand side of the kitchen that was att racting too much clutter, a valance above the sink window, and a too-tall cabinet above the stove. The Nu-life team remedied this lackluster kitchen by removing the valance over the window, refacing the cabinets and installing new doors and drawer fronts with the new ultra-modern Wenge colour. The client selected a sleek, modern door style along with complementary stainless steel handles. Deluxe panels were added to all ends of the cabinets providing the kitchen with a more upscale look.

The team removed the desk cabinets on the left side of the kitchen adding 3 spacious pantry cabinets with drawers and space for the microwave along with a space to conceal sundry items so that the kitchen is kept clutter-free. The cabinet above the stove was modified so that it is in alignment with the rest of the cabinets. The Nu-Life team added two upper horizontal cabinets with fl ip-up doors on the left side of the stove. A more modern look was achieved with the addition of an aluminum and glass door with a soft-close fl ip-up hinge. Modern crown moulding was added to the tops of all cabinets and a light valance was installed at the bottom of the upper cabinets to conceal under cabinet lighting. Nu-Life Kitchens clients continue to update their kitchens at approximately ½ the cost of a complete kitchen renovation with an average installation time of just 3 days which means a minimal disruption to your life and home. The recently opened Nu-Life Kitchens showroom at #7 – 851 Lagimodiere displays kitchens in various colours and styles along with a selection of handles, and a display of countertops in laminate, granite, and quartz. Nu-Life Kitchens provides free inhome consultations and estimates. All colours and styles can be brought to your home where various options will be discussed.
