milagrosamente rodeada de velas, en la Cuesta de la Vega, para testimoniar el origen cristiano de Madrid. El nombre de Almudena, de origen árabe, hace referencia al almudí o almacén de trigo existente en el antiguo enclave musulmán. Quizá los elementos más notables del templo sean la cúpula de pizarra con tambor octogonal y la cripta con más de cien columnas neorrománicas y las tumbas de algunas familias importantes del siglo XIX que albergan sus capillas. La catedral fue bendecida en el año 1993 por el papa Juan Pablo II en una de sus visitas a la capital de España. La Virgen de la Almudena fue nombrada en 1908, única patrona de la ciudad, aunque muchos madrileños sentían –y sientenmás devoción por otra virgen más popular y castiza, la Virgen de la Paloma. Cruzando la Cuesta de la Vega,frente a la entrada de la cripta, se puede admirar un fragmento de la muralla árabe del siglo IX, uno de los escasos restos que quedan del Madrid medieval.

Perhaps the most noteworthy elements of this temple are the slate dome built with an eight-piece tambour and the crypt with more than one hundred Neo-Romanesque columns and the tombs of some of the most mportant families of the 19th century that are kept in its chapels. Blessed by Pope John Paul II in 1993 during one of his visits to the Spanish capital, the cathedral was actually named in1908 after the city’s only female patron, even though many Madrileños showed greater devotion at the time (and still do) to another more popular and traditional virgin, the Virgen de la Paloma. If you cross the Cuesta de la Vega, opposite the entrance to the crypt, you will be able to admire a fragment of the Arab walls, dating back to the 9th century, one of the few remains of Medieval Madrid.
