Preschool to Grade Eight

Mission We strive to provide an educational environment that supports the physical, spiritual, social, and intellectual growth and development of our students. Our work is based on the educational contributions of Rudolf Steiner and his insights into human development and social forms. Our goal is to awaken and foster in our students:

A sense of wonder Creative and inquiring minds A well-founded belief in their capacities Strength of intellect, character, and will Compassion for and interest in all life.

These qualities equip our graduates to thrive at a variety of high schools as well as to lead meaningful, creative, engaged lives.

The season of fall is the time of harvest, a time of grateful gathering of nature’s gifts from the previous year’s labors. This Annual Report comes at a time when we can reflect on the bounty of the past year, an opportunity to recall and appreciate what our school has accomplished and look forward to fresh endeavors

The low-pressure, nurturing environment at the Waldorf School gave me time to explore and create and truly enjoy what I was doing without the pressure of achieving a certain number or comparing my trajectory to others around me. Now, of course, I have had to take many standardized tests and evaluations on my road to medical school, but the emotional stability that Waldorf education taught reminds me to keep an even keel. Geoffrey Rodriguez ‘03 University of Pennsylvania Medical Student

The highlight and culmination of the school year was the graduation of seventeen eighth grade students, the Class of 2013. At their commencement, they graced us with speech, humor, instrumental music and song, and a quiet dignity. These students displayed a rich harvest of character, talent, and academic achievement. A seed that was lovingly planted 10 years ago for some, and cultivated each year by our dedicated faculty, blossomed splendidly and was reflected in their shining countenances. These students were, to paraphrase the words of Rudolf Steiner, “received in reverence, educated in love, and sent forth in freedom.” With them go our heartfelt wishes for their next steps towards high school, college, and life’s journey. Another rich harvest was the graduation of WSL’s Class of 2009 from their many respective high schools. A strong academic foundation from their years at WSL and their love of learning is leading them to the next step in their education. This group of students has been accepted into exceptional colleges and universities, including Bard College, Occidental College, NYU, Reed College, Smith College, Tulane University, and Williams College (see complete list on inside back cover). We can feel a deep sense of accomplishment knowing that our faculty shepherded their journey through early childhood and into adolescence for a crucial period in their cognitive, physical, and social development. Throughout my years in Waldorf education, it has been, and continues to be, a real pleasure to know students who experience Waldorf education from early childhood through the grades and continue into high school, college, and beyond. The qualities that I experience over and over in graduates are: “a look-you-in-the-eye presence,” enthusiasm for discovery and learning, and a vigor for life. As the school begins its 43rd year—in the wake of last year’s affirming reaccreditation by AISNE and AWSNA—we can move into the winter season knowing that a deep and rich Waldorf educational process is firmly rooted and flourishing in each of our classes. Ever grateful for the rich harvest of the past year and to the efforts and generosity of parents, alumni parents, alumni and friends, we once again set ourselves to the task of cultivating future generations of inspired learners.

Board of Trustees Keith Hartt Board President It is significant that an educational philosophy conceived in 1919 still finds itself so relevant today. Our school nurtures and develops fulfilled, engaged, curious, happy children outside the educational norms of a culture that many experts in the field of child development and learning consider increasingly challenging to a child’s healthy development. As parents we have chosen to give our children a childhood rich with play activities and discovery of nature, artistic enrichment, and a thoughtful age-appropriate academic program. We guide our kids carefully in a material world where gadgets rule. We simply let kids be kids. We foster creativity in a world where the workplace increasingly demands it. We allow kids to discover themselves rather than ask them to memorize what it takes to pass a standardized test. We recognize that strong academics should be complemented with social and emotional intelligence. The school has experienced some changes this past year. The board has had to adjust finances strained by a weak economy. Parents, teachers, and staff have all made sacrifices. This is not the first rough patch for our community. We adapt. This will pass.

Finance and Administration Director Joe O’Regan who steered the finances and administration of the school for more than ten years moved on professionally which created the opportunity to re-envision his role and welcome in Alisar Cohen as the new Finance Director. I’ve worked closely with School Director Robert Schiappacasse and Alisar, and I see bright new horizons based on measured and tested approaches. We’re in good hands. As a board we’re engaged in a major effort to define ourselves in the context of other area public and independent schools. We made a pro-active decision to hire a professional to do market research and analysis so that we could better understand how the school is perceived and to evaluate our current enrollment and outreach practices. His work has created an opportunity for staff, faculty, and the board to focus on improving our systems to better serve current and potential parents as well as on establishing a strong, compelling message that will communicate our unique and powerful approach to educating children. Our new, bold sign on Massachusetts Avenue symbolizes an initial step in this direction. Thanks to all who helped in answering the surveys this past year. They’ve formed a valuable benchmark for what we’re doing well, where we can improve, and what is appreciated about our school. The Waldorf School of Lexington is a special place where so many cheerfully contribute and families care for one another. There is no more noble task than raising and educating our children. At the same time that I am humbled to have the opportunity to serve this cause, I find great joy in sharing this responsibility with all of you. College of Teachers Karen Weiland Chair The College of Teachers is a group of faculty and staff who have made a commitment to work together to provide visible and active leadership in areas that affect the life, health, and destiny of the school. Inspired by Rudolf Steiner’s insights into child development and school community building and working in collaboration with the Governance Council, the College makes decisions on WSL’s curriculum and educational programs.

I believe that having the same teacher and classmates for eight years helped build my teamwork and conflict resolution skills, which are critical in my profession as an engineer. Engineering schools often fail to properly teach these skills; as a result, technically competent engineers may struggle to successfully work on projects with their colleagues when they are out of school and in the workforce. Anne Goncharov, ‘03 Electrical Controls Engineer RT Engineering Corporation

The College of Teachers began a productive year with a workshop in consensus decision-making and meeting facilitation that informed our ongoing efforts to refine our meeting process and structure. The work that the College undertakes is often complex and must be tackled within a time frame limited by our commitment to our respective classes and subjects, so it is important that our meetings are efficient and that decisions are made in a timely fashion while respecting the diversity of opinion in our teaching community. Thanks to what we learned, our meeting facilitators are becoming increasingly adept at guiding the group through important decisions so that each member and the group as a whole can arrive at decisions that are in the best interest of the school. As part of the College’s annual commitment to program review, two committees worked throughout the year in a research process that culminated in proposals to enhance foreign language acquisition and technology proficiency in the middle school years. For the first time, students in the eighth grade choose to focus on a single foreign language, Spanish or German. They spend four class periods each week studying the language of their choice. To ensure that students are prepared to use computers and the internet, which are required in their studies in high school, a computer technology curriculum was implemented to increase students’ experience and exposure to the digital tools most commonly used. Middle school students now must learn proficiency in keyboarding that they then apply to word processing and internet research under the guidance of the English skills teacher. The College shared the Board’s focus on enrollment this past year and appreciates the Board’s commitment to engaging an enrollment consultant to better understand the demographics of our area and the views and feedback of our school community. We look forward to implementing the recommendations put forward by the Enrollment Task Force in partnership with the Board and administrative staff.

School Finances Miguel Canizares Board Treasurer In 2012-13, the school saw a slight increase in revenues compared to the prior year. Tuition and fees remain our biggest source of funding, representing 84% of the total and highlighting the importance of continuing to build on our enrollment initiatives. The school community’s generous support of Annual Giving and of the third annual Gala contributed an additional 6% to revenue. On the expense side, the school maintained fiscal discipline while continuing to dedicate 73% of the budget to the program and trimming administrative and other costs, resulting in a small year-end surplus. This year, Alisar Cohen joined the school as Finance Director, bringing with her a wealth of financial administration and planning experience. The school’s financial well-being, steered by the Finance Committee and Board of Trustees, is the result of the support and dedication of the families, faculty and staff that make up our school community.

Parent Community Association Michelle Willis, Co-chair Taryn Pinstein, Co-chair The past year has been an active one with both continuing and new initiatives as well as monthly meetings to plan, brainstorm, and coordinate the volunteers efforts of dedicated PCA members. We want to acknowledge all of the many parent volunteers not listed here who have generously contributed much effort and time into creating a year rich with events and goodwill. The lead volunteers for each activity are listed in parentheses. For the past 3 years, the PCA has organized the Waldorf Boutique (Taryn Pinstein, Christina Stanley-Polyak, Ann Wiedie), a rummage sale of children’s items held during the Holiday Fair as a fundraising effort to support the school and as an eco-friendly initiative to encourage the re-use and recycling of clothing and toys. The Boutique raised over $6,400 for the school community and has become an established feature of the Holiday Fair. In addition, the PCA Community Table (Becky Marken, Emi Morse, Lori Wright) raises money by selling small handmade items in the Community Room. The Parent Education Committee (Mandy DeBurro, Jennifer Goodman, Taryn Pinstein) presented an exciting line-up of speakers as well as Waldorf 101 (Carol Jones), a series of sessions presenting information about Waldorf pedagogy and the school.

The healthy social life is found when, in the mirror of each human soul, the whole community finds its reflection and when, in the community, the strength of each individual is living. Rudolf Steiner

Dads Connection (Ben Ames, Miguel Canizares, Richard Collins, Guillermo del Angel, Ross Dickson, Keith Hartt, Juleby Hirsch, Jindrich Liska, Leo Margolf-Culhane, Paulo Milko, David Poulten, Butch Stanley, Peter Sulski) had a full year with casual monthly off-campus meet-and-greet nights for WSL dads as well as with organizing an annual family camping trip and a musical instrument “petting-zoo” for children entering elementary orchestra, among other community activities. As community-building efforts, The International Potluck (Amy Durlach, Emi Morse) in February and the Family Shabbat dinner (Lily-Rakia Chandler, Meredith Culhane, Sarah Levine) both celebrated the diversity of cultures represented by our parent body. Both events were enlivened with the musical talents of faculty, parents and children. Part of the PCA’s work is to cultivate a network where parents can support or mentor each other. Parent Christine Alaimo graciously hosted the NurseryKindergarten Parent Reception which offered new parents the opportunity to ask questions of parents from grades 1 to 8 for which they only they have answers, in a warm and relaxing, cocktail party environment. In addition, Julie McVeigh worked with Admissions Director Tuija Voutilainen to match families at the school with new families who joined the school for the year 2013-14. The PCA maintains, on an ongoing basis, the Adult Lending Library as well as keeps the Lost & Found organized.

Some members of the school community gather for delicious food and lively entertainment at the International Potluck.

A great deal of gratitude is owed to Susan Cody, the faculty liaison, for her outstanding contributions by getting events on the calendar, supporting planning efforts of the Adult Education committee, and contributing to the monthly meetings.

Development Juleby Hirsch Development Committee Chair Fundraising efforts for the Waldorf School of Lexington play a vital role in providing the outstanding Waldorf education that is our purpose and mission. As with most independent schools across the country, WSL depends upon raising a portion of its operating budget from contributions. It is this support that enables our school to provide students an enriching Waldorf education while keeping tuition as low as possible to make Waldorf accessible to as many families as possible. This past year, the Annual Giving Campaign raised just over $131,000 from 98% of our community. In addition to across-the-board support for the school, these gifts funded program enrichment for students and continuing education opportunities for faculty and staff. Gifts from the Gala special appeal funded our new, striking campus signage, an original whimsical gateway to the nursery, and renovation of the Main Office in support of enrollment growth and the next generation of Waldorf students and families. In partnership with the Development and Alumni Committees our accomplishments last year include: • Participation rate of 98% in Annual Giving—matching a $10,000 challenge by the Board of Trustees, • Meeting a $25,000 matching challenge of new and increased gifts, • Donations of $131,343 to the Annual Campaign, • 279 gifts in total,

I credit the creativity and self-confidence developed at the Waldorf school for my ability to conceive of new and innovative ways to run analysis and visualize data in a manner that may not have been evident to my peers in the quantitative and culturally rigid setting of an investment bank. Thomas Steiner, ‘01 Vice President, Pellucid Analytics Quantitative Finance Advisor

• Revenue of $95,635 raised at the Gala, increase from $80,000 raised in 2012, • Contributions of $35,050 raised for the Gala Special Appeal for campus improvements, increasing from $22,620 in 2012, • Revenue generated for the Mendenhall Scholarship Fund of $12,560—a record high—including contributions through sponsorship and advertising from local businesses and members of the wider school community, • Total fundraising of $249,852 (restricted and unrestricted). Countless hours and many hard-working and motivated volunteers led to the success of our fundraising campaign, outreach events and programs. As I look back on the 2012-13 campaign, I am moved by the remarkable energy, effort and resources given so lovingly by so many to keep our school and community strong. We are all truly grateful for your commitment to the Waldorf School of Lexington school community and the education that our faculty brings to the schoolchildren.

Annual Giving 2013-2014 Support our Teachers, Support our School, Support Annual Giving Paula Antonevich Director of Development When you participate in the Annual Giving campaign you say “Yes!” and affirm your commitment to enriching the lives of the children of the school.

Participation Matters

Matching Challenge

The Waldorf School of Lexington is proud of its 43-year tradition of generosity and we invite you to be part of this strong tradition of giving. Last year we had a 98% participation rate and this year we are striving for full participation. Your generosity allows us to continue to support our teachers as they provide the unique and rich Waldorf curriculum for our children. Your contribution also helps to maintain and improve our beautiful school campus and provide financial support that ensures an economically diverse community. Are you up for a challenge? The Board of Trustees has given us an incredible opportunity to increase the power of your gift in support of our school. This year, members of the Board of Trustees have increased their individual gifts from last year and are challenging our community to do the same. In addition to leading the way with an unrestricted gift of $20,000, the Board is offering to double each new or increased gift amount, up to $15,000. Let’s meet and exceed this challenge!

Thank You!

Every gift is important to the school and every gift is received in gratitude. We sincerely thank you for your gifts of time, talent, and treasure. We value you—our parents, alumni, alumni parents, friends, grandparents and parents, faculty and staff—for your support of the school. Because of your ongoing generosity, we are educating a generation of young people who develop a love of learning based on a deep foundation of academic achievement. Your gifts ensure that we can continue to provide a developmentally-appropriate, academically creative, and innovative curriculum in a secure and inspiring place. Thank you.
