Creating a Ripple in the Community 2011-12 Annual Report for Wake Technical Community College
Each time a man stands up for an ideal or acts to improve the lot of others ... he sends forth a ripple ... those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls .... Robert F. Kennedy
Creating a
Ripple in the
Community
Wake County is growing by 20,000 new residents each year, and Wake Tech continues to expand at an equally astounding rate. Enrollment has increased more than 55% over the past five years and is not expected to slow down. In the 2011-12 year, Wake Tech served 66,676 students, or about 1 in every 8 Wake County adults. The education and training those students receive create a “ripple effect that changes our community for the better, as they improve their lives and the lives of their families, bring new skills to the workplace, build companies, start entrepreneurial ventures, and solve problems with new technologies and innovative thinking. To serve them, Wake Tech has built new buildings, added faculty and class sections, offered more online options, and started a Saturday College to ease crowding and accommodate more students. We offer top-quality training as well as re-training programs for workers who have lost jobs or want to retool for a new career. We teach the latest technologies so students are not only skilled, but job ready. We work with local employers to make sure our training produces workers with the qualifications to meet the challenges of the future. We offer credentials that give workers opportunities for advancement and growth. We provide a springboard for those who seek additional higher education and options for staying employed while in school. And in 2011-12, we did something else: We launched a campaign to make sure Wake Tech will be able to continue to meet the needs of this community, far into the future. The Ripple Effect is a major gifts campaign that will support Wake Tech through strategic investments in the areas of student success, faculty and staff innovation, and technology impact. This report highlights our record-breaking year and our hopes for the years ahead. We’re grateful to this community for its support of our mission, and we look forward to creating a ripple that builds a strong community for all of us. Stephen C. Scott

Technology Impact Technology drives our world. For students to be marketable and relevant in today’s workplace, they must be competent in the latest technologies and able to stay ahead of an ever-advancing curve. Funding from The Ripple Effect will help to ensure that Wake Tech has the equipment and technologies that are vital.

College Development College Development seeks financial support for Wake Tech programs and students beyond designated state and local funding. It encompasses sponsored programs, including federal, state, and private grants, as well as private fundraising through the Wake Tech Foundation.
Sponsored Programs and Federal Relations The Office of Sponsored Programs and Federal Relations develops and maintains relationships with the federal government; solicits funds in the form of grants and appropriations from foundations and from federal, state, and local governments; and administers sponsored programs and initiatives to support the financial needs of the college. Wake Tech received more than $3.6 million in grant funds in 2011-12, an increase of $1.1 million over the previous year. These grants have provided the means to increase the enrollment and graduation of
minorities and persons with disabilities in the geosciences; to give migrant and seasonal farmworkers better access to education; to expand efforts in sustainability focused on recycling, waste reduction, and alternative forms of transportation; to implement a North Carolina Network for Excellence in Teaching (NC-NET) regional center to enhance classroom technologies and online instruction for teachers throughout the state; to help health sciences faculty learn new instructional methods using computerized simulations; and to build awareness of health sciences career pathways among diverse, underserved populations. A list of funded projects follows.

Letter from the Foundation Board Chair Thank you for starting a ripple and helping the Wake Tech Foundation have one of its most successful years to date. Because of your investment, we raised more than $3.6 million for Wake Tech Community College, with the funds supporting the most critical areas of need for the college. Thanks to you, we are ensuring students have access to quality education, faculty and staff continue to learn and grow professionally, and classrooms and campuses have the newest technologies, essential for providing relevant education and training. In 2011-2012, we launched The Ripple Effect, our first major gifts campaign in 21 years. This new initiative is certain to have a long-term impact on Wake Tech and its ability to respond to the community’s growing demand for education and training. Wake Tech is committed to meeting that demand, even during difficult economic times, but we cannot do it without the help of private partners. Through your investments, we will graduate productive, contributing citizens; prepare a strong workforce for industry; and drive economic growth in Wake County. What happens in the classrooms and across the campuses of Wake Tech has a ripple effect throughout the region. Please read this report to see how Wake Tech is putting your investment to work, and how you are making a difference in our college and our community. Thank you for your trust and your support. Sincerely,
Arne Morris Chairman, Wake Tech Foundation 2011-12

THE RIPPLE EFFECT Wake Tech has earned a reputation for making higher education accessible to all. We are uniquely positioned to respond to our community’s diverse needs for education and training, from degree programs to college transfer pathways to cutting-edge workforce training in the latest technologies, traditional trades, and emerging industries. More than ever, the community is demanding that Wake Tech deliver on its reputation, to prepare more students for meaningful and rewarding employment and for their roles as contributing members of our community. Their success ultimately fuels economic growth throughout Wake County; what starts in our classrooms has a far-reaching impact across this region. The Ripple Effect is Wake Tech’s response to record-breaking enrollment and demand for programs and services, an initiative to secure support for the programs that have distinguished us and had such a positive impact throughout the region. Like fouryear universities, Wake Tech depends on both public and private funding to operate, and donations to The Ripple Effect will help us continue to educate, innovate, and keep Wake County focused on the future. With the community’s help, we can reach our goals – so our students can reach theirs.
