MAGAZINE

2013-2014 ANNUAL REPORT

FROM THE PRESIDENT What does it mean when a student proudly states, “I am a Wake”? We think of our college community as aware, informed, energetic, and focused. Wake Tech students are committed to their endeavors and aware of the possibilities ahead as they earn degrees and professional credentials. Our faculty and staff are passionate about changing lives for the better. Our alumni – thousands of successful members of the region’s workforce – have stayed connected to Wake Tech, aware of its impact on their lives and our community.

In the past year we wrapped up 50th anniversary celebrations and rededicated ourselves to our mission. Wake Tech focuses on industry needs, workplace trends, economic shifts, and the challenges that await graduates as well as professionals who want to continue to learn and evolve. We provide timely, relevant education and training – and for more and more people, that education takes place online. Wake Tech now has more online students than any other community college or university in North Carolina. We are developing a multi-year, collegewide effort known as EPIC, e-Learning Preparedness Initiative across the College, to improve student success online. EPIC is consistent with our Completion Agenda, part of the nationwide Completion by Design initiative to help students finish what they start. Completion by Design means starting with the end in mind, supporting students in completing their studies and earning the degrees and certificates essential for success. “I am a Wake” is more than a catchphrase; it’s who we are and how we think about our institution – changing lives every day. Dr. Stephen C. Scott President

S T UD EN T E XCE LLE NC E “Wake Tech is steering me in the right direction.” Kumar Chandrashekaran Forty-one-year-old Kumar Chandrashekaran spent years in the food service industry, working as a chef on a cruise ship and managing a fast food restaurant. But in 2012, the Apex resident decided he was ready for a change. “I found myself in a job with no growth potential,” Kumar says, “and I wanted a new career.” Co-workers recommended Wake Tech, and Kumar decided to take a closer look. He discovered it was a perfect fit: “Wake Tech is affordable! I realized I could quit my job and become a full-time student!” Kumar did more than sign up for a few classes – he threw himself into his studies. He’s now pursuing an Associate in Arts degree and a second associate’s degree in Business Administration. Kumar is also involved in the Wake Tech community. He serves as president of Phi Beta Lambda (PBL), the national academic organization for students in business and leadership, and won two awards at the statewide PBL leadership conference in 2013. Kumar also enjoys volunteering and giving back to the community. He helped with a Wake Tech service project, packing meals for underserved families. “Education is important,” he says, “but I want to be well rounded.” Kumar is married and has two young daughters. He also has big plans for his future, including transferring to NC State once he completes his degrees at Wake Tech. Ultimately, he hopes to work at the corporate level, and he’s confident he will make it. “Wake Tech is steering me in the right direction.”

Cooking Up a Successful Career

A

aron Stumb is cooking up quite a reputation as executive chef at Durham’s highly-successful Mez Contemporary Mexican Restaurant! He’s been running the kitchen at Mez, part of the Chapel Hill Restaurant Group, since it opened six years ago, and he also teaches classes at Southern Season in Chapel Hill. Before joining Mez, Aaron learned all about kitchen management while working for a national corporate restaurant group. He also worked at several Triangle restaurants – but his first taste of culinary arts was at Wake Tech. Aaron enrolled at Wake Tech in the mid 90s without a career goal – but that changed the day he read a brochure describing the college’s culinary program. He began taking classes and quickly realized he had more than a passing interest: “I found a drive and passion for cooking at Wake Tech. My instructors opened my eyes to the 16

culinary world.” Aaron excelled in the kitchen, and in 1996, graduated with an associate’s degree. Soon after, he got his first job in a restaurant kitchen, and he has been working (and moving up) steadily ever since.

“Wake Tech laid the foundation for my career and changed my life.” In addition to his demanding job, Aaron is a devoted father, an adjunct instructor in Wake Tech’s Culinary Arts program, and an active member of the program’s advisory board. He has also provided co-op opportunities for Wake Tech students at Mez, and has hired several graduates. “We have Wake Tech grads sprinkled throughout the company,” Aaron says. “I know exactly where to go for talented

chefs!” Aaron has also been the driving force behind Chapel Hill Restaurant Group’s support of Wake Tech’s annual Culinary Arts Showcase. “Aaron’s continued involvement in our program as Advisory Board member, employer, and instructor has helped our program grow,” says Jeff Hadley, Culinary Arts Department Head. “It’s been a pleasure to watch him mature from a young culinary student to Executive Chef of one of the Triangle’s highest-volume dining establishments!” Aaron was recognized for his many contributions to Wake Tech, with the 2014 Distinguished Alumni reward. “I am very humbled by this recognition. I am happy to give back to Wake Tech – the college laid the foundation for my career and changed my life.”

onica Armstrong knew that earning a college degree would be tough – tougher for her, maybe, than for many of her contemporaries. Monica grew up in foster care, and she had moved from one home to another until turning 18 and “aging out” of the foster care system. Suddenly, in 2008, she found herself on her own. She enrolled at Wake Tech and found it even tougher than she had anticipated. “It was extremely hard,” she says.

“Without the support of Fostering Bright Futures, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

Her story is not surprising; only 2% of teens emerging from foster care succeed in earning college degrees. Fortunately for Monica, there was Fostering Bright Futures, a program offered by Wake Tech in partnership with government

Monica was one of the first students accepted into the program; six years later, she graduated with a twoyear degree in Biopharmaceutical Technology. “Words cannot express how grateful I am,” Monica says. “Without

the support of Fostering Bright Futures, I wouldn’t be where I am today.” Monica has moved on to greater challenges: She is now pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Pharmaceutical Science at NC Central University. She has a full scholarship, provided by an anonymous donor who wants to see her succeed. “Going to a university is scary and exciting,” Monica says, “but even though I’m no longer at Wake Tech, I know Fostering Bright Futures will always be there to support me when times get tough. For that, I am forever grateful.”

That opportunity was not something he expected when he first entered Wake Tech. David came to Wake Tech because he didn’t quite feel ready for university life. He served as a senator in the Wake Tech Student Government Association, volunteered with the International Friends Club to help the homeless, and stayed active with Campus Crusade for Christ, all while maintaining a grade point average of 4.0. 30

He also had the chance to meet Representative David Price when the congressman visited the Northern Wake Campus. When Rep. Price invited David to apply for an internship, he realized he would have a lot to do to get ready – find housing, put together a professional wardrobe, and figure out how to cover the costs of life in D.C.

“I’m appreciative of all the support I have received from the Wake Tech family.”

That’s when the Wake Tech community rallied to make David’s opportunity a reality. A number of college leaders – including President Stephen Scott – donated suits, ties, and funds to help with living expenses; others helped David find accommodations to make his stay in D.C. affordable.

WAKE TECHNICAL COMMUNITY COLLEGE

“I’m appreciative of all the support I have received from the Wake Tech family,” says David. “I’m overjoyed and full of positive energy from the people here.” Of everything the Wake Tech community provided, David says nothing means more to him than the Wake Tech lapel pins Dr. Scott placed on every suit jacket. “Wake Tech is always in my heart, and now I will be able to show everyone how much it means to me.” The internship on Capitol Hill will no doubt prepare David well for the future he wants, just as the foundation he built at Wake Tech prepared him to continue to learn and grow.

COLLEGE DEVELOPMENT

College Development seeks financial support for Wake Tech programs and students beyond designated state and local funding. It encompasses sponsored programs, including federal, state, and private grants, as well as private fundraising through the Wake Tech Foundation.

SPONSORED PROGRAMS & FEDERAL RELATIONS

The Office of Sponsored Programs and Federal Relations develops and maintains relationships with the federal government; solicits funds in the form of grants and appropriations from foundations and from federal, state, and local governments; and administers sponsored programs and initiatives to support the financial needs of the college. Wake Tech received more than $4.4 million in grant funds in 2013-14, with 21 of its 29 submitted projects receiving funding. These grants have provided the means to create a new training program in mission critical operations, preparing workers to handle the structures and systems that keep businesses and government running around the clock; to incorporate the use of 3D printing technology into seven identified high-enrollment courses; to provide assessment, placement, and support for English Language Learners with refugee status in Wake County; to create training opportunities in utility scale solar array installation and maintenance; and to provide geology students with a means to monitor the earth’s seismic activity in real time.

FROM THE BOARD CHAIR December 2013 marked the end of Wake Tech’s 50th anniversary year – and the official close of our first major gifts campaign, The Ripple Effect. With this community’s generous support, the campaign exceeded its goals, raising more than $17 million. We’re grateful to all who gave. Wake Tech employees led the way with 87% participation in the campaign; their dedication on a daily basis is humbling and inspiring. We are especially grateful to The ABB Group, Lenovo, SAS, and Waste Industries, whose support has allowed us to take bold steps that will have farreaching impact. We put Ripple Effect funds to work immediately, providing scholarships for students, training and support for faculty and staff, and much-needed technology throughout the college. This report highlights a year of innovative initiatives as well as ongoing work to spread knowledge and impart skills and confidence in a wide spectrum of learners. We plan to continue the vital partnerships that made our campaign successful and that make our college strong. With your support, the “ripple effect” can continue changing lives. Thank you for supporting our mission. Ed Turlington Chair, Wake Tech Foundation Board of Directors
