Interior Design with a Point of View One of the most optimistic things that we can do is to surround ourselves with beauty that inspires us to trust living a joyful life. As an artist and interior designer, James Yarosh enjoys imagining and creating settings for beautiful lives. Recently, James was invited to collaborate with one of his longtime art and design clients to design a three-bedroom New York City apartment. James’ s idea was to draw from the apartment’s significant views to create a design that created a dialogue with the outside to feel as if one were living in the view. The color palette was inspired by the soft pink and pale yellow facades not commonly associated typically with cityscapes to present a much kinder image of New York City to imagine.... Read the full story, along with additional interior design portfolio images, and view the gallery’s current art collections on the What’s New page of the gallery’s website.

Open to the Public Saturday 12-4 p.m. & by appointment 732.993.5278 Join us on Saturdays at the gallery to view art collections in person and/or to introduce discussion about potential design projects. 45 East Main Street, 2nd floor loft Holmdel, New Jersey

memo

memories begin at home

P

erhaps I’m over-romanticizing the lazy days of summer I spent as a girl: dinners eaten alfresco on our oversize porch, days swimming and sunning at the beach, long bike rides. Of course, all these memories involve time spent with family and friends. And so at NJ Home, we bring you our summer issue chock-full of inspiration for your best season yet. Take, for example, the Kassin clan. For decades, their family and friends have spent summers down the Shore. They even purchased an old cabana club in Loch Arbour, converting it into a beacon on the beach that hosted dozens of the family’s biggest celebrations: weddings, anniversary parties, charity events and more. Then Hurricane Sandy struck, forcing the Kassins, like many others, to rebuild. And, boy, did they ever. Turn to “Outside’s In” on page 92 to see the result of architect Andrew Wilkinson’s

cabana restoration project, a complete renovation with nods to its former incarnation. Once again it’s a hub for get-togethers and the perfect setting to create new memories. When we talk about summer’s memorable moments, more often than not we recall family vacations. The family featured in “Livin’ the Dream” has been congregating at the same Shore home for three generations. Once ideal for its first occupants, the house and its interior over time became tired and outdated, no longer functional for the growing family. Flip to page 76 to see how designer Sheila Rich transformed the space into a home filled with light, suitable for elegant dinners and energetic children—of this generation and many more to come. Not every family, of course, requires beachfront living to enjoy the season. Rob and Wendy Marcus enlisted landscape architect Brian J. Koribanick to convert their large but empty outdoor space in Short Hills into a backyard paradise. In “Summer Starts Here!” on page 72, read about and see all the elements—from the 1,100-square-foot free-form pool to the dry-laid Pennsylvania Colonial walls— that make this property the center for summertime fun. In addition to these stories, this issue of NJ Home has plenty more ideas for you to get the most out of the season. If you can’t get enough of the beach, furnish your home with one (or all) of the items on page 36. The pieces, each made with shells, will make you feel like you’ve brought the shore into your home. Or turn to page 40, where we offer six unique ways you can incorporate rattan into your home décor—nothing says summer like one of these breezy accents. Summers are meant for rest and relaxation, family and friends, and for me, there’s no place like home to enjoy all of that. Here’s hoping the same fills your home this season.

WHAT’S UP, WHAT’S NEW AND WHAT TO DO.

FLOWER POWER

LITTLE MONSTERS Straight off the heels of their big debut at Art Basel in Miami last winter, The Haas Brothers have unveiled their new collection for luxury housewares brand L’Objet. Inspired by the unique desert landscape of Joshua Tree National Park, these whimsical pieces feature the brothers’ signature monster-like creatures in various forms—like on salt and pepper shakers, dinner plates, serving bowls and napkin rings. Prices range from $28 for a single saucer up to $3,500 for the limited-edition ceramic vessels. Shop the collection at Bergdorf Goodman in Manhattan or at l-objet.com.

She’s an actress, a mom, a business mogul—and now she’s a home décor designer too. Drew Barrymore launched Drew Barrymore Flower Home, a new line of furniture, home décor and accessories sold exclusively at Walmart. As the name suggests, the collection is stocked with floral, feminine-filled designs, and though the items all coordinate, they aren’t too matchy-matchy, lending themselves to an eclectic aesthetic. “I wanted a collection filled with things that felt like they came from different places around the world,” Barrymore says of Flower Home. “Your home should be joyful and make you feel inspired.” Prices range from $18 to $899.

KitchenAid is celebrating its centennial birthday—yes, stand mixers have been around for that long—in the best way possible, by releasing a line of red hot, limited-edition products. The collection is called Queen of Hearts, and every item in it is a fiery “Passion Red,” which KitchenAid Senior Design Manager John McConnell says is an updated and refreshing color to “reflect the times, mood and kitchen trends” of today. He continues, “The Color Finish Material team has been forecasting globally the need for a brighter, more confident red. Passion Red has a delicious vibrancy to it that complements our palette.” Small appliances like a toaster, kettle, food chopper, immersion blender and hand mixer are available now online and at select stores in the hue, with larger appliances like ovens available later this summer. And while you’re at it, add some personality to your stand mixer with one of the bakeware brand’s new 5-quart microwaveable and dishwasher-safe ceramic mixing bowls. With girly motifs and cute-as-a-button titles like Confetti Sprinkle, Parasol, Scandi Floral, Whispering Floral and White Mermaid Lace, they’re the perfect way to usher in spring and summer—and add a feminine touch to your kitchen.

GET OUT AND ABOUT

Now that warmer weather is here, it’s time to get out and find design inspiration at some of the dozens of events for the interior design-minded happening this summer, from craft fairs to home tours. Here are just a few worth checking out: Kick off summer at Stone Harbor’s annual Tour of Homes and Gardens in Cape May County. Hosted by the town’s Garden Club on June 1 from 12:30 to 4 p.m., the walk features a tour of six stunning Stone Arbor homes, as well as the Garden of Kindness, which is maintained by both professional gardeners and students at a local elementary school. For more information, call Mantura Gallagher at 609.961.3069 or go to stoneharborNJ.org. Grab the kids and those gardening tools on June 23 for a family-friendly day at the annual Garden Show and Garden Festival at the Whitall House and Red Bank Battlefield in Gloucester County’s National Park. Tour the Whitall gardens, learn how to keep your own garden blossoming and enjoy food vendors and kids’ activities from 12 to 4 p.m. Facebook. com/whitallhouse has more details. Scour through a wide variety of furniture, kitchenware, collectibles and more at The Seawife Antique

IN FULL BLOOM

In the words of The Devil Wears Prada’s Miranda Priestly, florals for spring and summer are hardly “groundbreaking.” But there’s a reason flowers have been a trend in home décor (and fashion) forever: These light and airy pieces just brighten up your space.

Store’s Antique & Collectible Show in Barnegat Light on Aug. 4 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., rain or shine. You’ll find unique pieces no matter your style, from shabby chic to nautical to more traditional. Learn more at theseawife.com. And finally, on Aug. 25, find unique tchotchkes and accessories for your home at the Antiques in the Park event at Veterans Park in Westwood, where artists will be selling paintings, sculptures and more crafts from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Check out westwoodnj.gov for the scoop.

HOME (DÉCOR) FOR RENT

The future of home décor is now, ladies and gentlemen. Thanks to a new partnership between West Elm and New York City-based Rent The Runway (RTR), which rents designer clothing and accessories, subscribers can now rent “soft” home décor items—quilts, blankets, shams and decorative pillows—too. “We are making it easier than ever for customers to discover great design for their spaces,” Alex Bellos, president of West Elm, says of the partnership. The items will be available to RTR subscribers in 26 “bundles” ranging in retail value from $150 to $450, and each bundle is either for the bedroom or living room.

CB2 GOES VINTAGE

We have sensory-friendly movies and sensory-friendly clothes, so why not sensory-friendly home décor? Target’s Pillowfort brand has launched the firstever line of home décor specifically designed for kids with sensory issues, and everything is ridiculously clever, not to mention adorable. The line includes a rocking chair for those who have trouble staying still, a tent that a kid can retreat to when he or she needs some alone time and floor cushions made of different fabrics and textures. Best yet? Every item is less than $100, so you can stock up.

FROM ITALY, WITH LOVE

Italian appliances brand Smeg and Italian fashion house Dolce & Gabbana have teamed up for what might be the most “bellissimo” collaboration in recent home décor history. Following their partnership last year on a line of hand-painted refrigerators, the new Sicily Is My Love collection features small appliances like toasters, juicers, coffee machines, kettles, blenders and stand mixers, all adorned with fun floral motifs, bright fruits and other whimsical interpretations of Sicilian folklore. Get yours at Williams-Sonoma.

CB2 is adored for its modern yet classic furniture for every room of the home, and now the brand is adding vintage to its repertoire. CB2 has teamed up with designer and collector Charlie Ferrer for its firstever vintage collection, which features authentic chairs, tables, lamps and more from the 1950s–1970s that Ferrer hand-selected from boutiques and galleries across Europe. Prices range from $999 to $11,999, and the furniture is available now at select CB2 stores.

OUTDOOR LIVING

Barcelona designer Mario Luiz has designed two stylish collections of sculptural outdoor furniture for Restoration Hardware. Inspired by his extensive travels, the two collections, titled Sebastian and Mesa, embody the mid-century modern aesthetic and are built with water-resistant materials and fabrics. Pricing starts at $1,325, and items are available online and in select RH stores.

WELCOME TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD

PUPPY PILE

THE WORLD IS AT YOUR FINGERTIPS

Nothing against Google Maps, but for real international summer travel inspiration, check out Best Made’s handcrafted globe. Made in England, it sits on three ball bearings for easy rotation. The box itself is made of hand-lacquered cherry wood with polished brass accents and “Be Optimistic” etched into the lid for when you need a little mood boost. Available at bestmadeco.com.

If your walls need a freshening up for summer but you’re afraid to commit, peel-andstick wallpaper is a great option. But that’s only half the reason why we’re obsessed with the new Chasing Paper x Jen Peters collection. The other half? The five whimsical prints are each full of personality, which makes them an easy way to inject fun into any room. Choose from California Palms, The Palm Springs, Spotted, Stacked or, our personal favorite, Puppy Pile, featuring illustrations of dogs. Each design is available in an array of color options to fit in with any aesthetic. Now’s the time to get cracking on that weekend DIY project—your accent wall and reading nook are just begging for this.

You may recognize Eric Hillegass and Patrick Bartscherer from their three-time stint on House Hunters; the first two go-rounds in 2013 followed the couple as they purchased and then renovated their new home in Philly, and their third, which aired on April 2 on HGTV, saw them in the Garden State buying a multi-use building in Collingswood—and then totally revamping it to suit their industrial aesthetic. Later this summer, these reality stars and newbie interior designers will open their own home décor store, Bespoke Home + Life, on Haddon Avenue, right beneath their new Collingswood home. “My dream was always to live above our shop, and it was important to Patrick to stay in close proximity to a major city,” Hillegass says. “When we got to know Collingswood and everything it has to offer, it became clear very quickly that it was the perfect fit for us.” The focus of the store is on handmade home décor—“the idea is to feature goods made by people, not machines,” Bartscherer adds—and it’ll also sell house plants, including concrete planters Hillegass makes himself. “So far, the saying rings very true to me,” Hillegass says. “If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.” A bit farther north, another New Jersey resident is making her home décor dreams come true by opening up a Nailed It D.I.Y. Studio in Somerville, where customers can build crafts and make their own home décor. The brainchild behind the business is mom-of-two Angelina Rivera of Bridgewater, whose family visit to the Nailed It in North Carolina inspired her to open up a studio in Central Jersey. Nailed It Somerville is slated for a grand opening in June, and another is opening up in Marlton at a later date.

Modular outdoor seating gets a fun update with the new Ribes collection by B&B Italia. Designed by Italian architect Antonio Citterio, the collection starts with a low-lying futon base. From there, pieces can be interchanged, combined, removed and rearranged to create the ideal seating arrangement for your patio, deck or backyard. Even better, the pieces can be used indoors as well, and the striped, South American-inspired upholstery fabrics add a burst of personality. See the new products in person at B&B Italia’s two NYC retail locations at 58th Street and Madison Avenue.

An inviting, all-white living space was one of the homeowners’ biggest requests for their Hoboken condo. ”Every time I would visit them I would say, ‘I don’t want to leave!’” says designer Marina Cheban. The white Restoration Hardware sofa in Perennials Performance Textured Linen Weave withstands the wear and tear from everyday life—and their Frenchie, Reuben. The wooden RH coffee table adds pop to an understated color palette.

Marina Cheban’s 30-something clients Leyla and Adam Bilali had three requests when gut renovating their Hoboken condo—create a ton of storage, add a third bedroom and make sure everything is white on white on white. It wasn’t an easy task since they couldn’t increase the square footage of the space and found getting permits from the Hudson Tea Building’s board took longer than expected. But after a year-long renovation process once they purchased the home in August 2017, the end result was worth the wait, giving them the open, modern and bright threebed, three-bath they were hoping for. The first order of business was transforming bonus space next to the outdated galley kitchen into a guest bedroom. From there, they knocked down a wall, heightened the kitchen ceiling to match the high ceilings throughout the home and converted the kitchen into an L-shape that completely opened up the living area. “Usually when people open up a kitchen, they have it facing the living room horizontally, but Marina changed it to vertical to give us more space,” says Leyla. “I’m so happy we did that.” Continued...

This page: Dark hardwood flooring is a stark contrast to the all-whiteeverything, like this Theodore Alexander console table and Restoration Hardware stools. Opposite page: The same gold Restoration Hardware handles in the kitchen were used in black throughout the custom built-ins in the living room. “It comes together but it’s not too much gold,” says designer Marina Cheban. Appliances by Sub-Zero and Wolf and natural quartzite countertops from New York Stone complete the luxe look.

The Restoration Hardware lighting fixture in the master bedroom “weighs about 200 pounds,” laughs Cheban. The purple velvet bed from CB2 and bench from West Elm “were Leyla’s little bit of pink.”

switches from an iPhone!” Then came the décor, inspired by a palette that was both color- and gender-neutral. “I don’t like the industrial look so we tried to add touches of color to make it less masculine,” says Leyla, who wanted pink accents, much to her husband’s dismay. “All white made it neutral. Adam was amenable to everything, as long as there was no pink!” And though there were some minor compromises along the way, Leyla admits they couldn’t have gotten their dream home without Cheban’s insight—and the feeling was mutual. “I often work with couples on totally different playing fields,” Cheban says. “They’ve been together since high school so it was an easy process. She knew where she could push him. They were a pleasure.” And we’d say that certainly shows in their collaboration.

This page: Cheban and the homeowners are “obsessed” with Kelly Wearstler; Leyla chose this Kelly Wearstler chandelier as a statement piece in the dining room, which hangs over a table and chairs set by Restoration Hardware. Opposite page: The chrome-finish master bathroom is perfection, but the golden guest bath, outfitted with Missoni wallpaper, Kelly Wearstler sconces and marble tile by TileBar, is Leyla’s favorite of the home’s three bathrooms.

60

The couple also trusted their designer with the cabinets. “I suggested we add double-height cabinets and a rolling library ladder, and they were totally for it,” Cheban says. “I love clients that are totally game.” The built-ins continued throughout the living room and into the master bedroom to maximize square footage (and cleverly cover the HVAC units), and two out of the three bathrooms were completely redone. “Leyla likes gold so we incorporated it in the guest bathroom,” Cheban says; they also stole some space from that large bathroom to build her a custom California Closet. Chrome Brizo fixtures and a mosaic marble floor were installed in the master bathroom, and modern features like remote-controlled window treatments from The Shade Store were implemented throughout. “It’s a smart home,” Cheban adds. “You can control all the light

easy-care artificial) is an example of how simple can be stunning. (The family likes the extra space to play ball too.) A seamless transition also was achieved with the large-format flooring in both the great room with its gray porcelain and the patio with its concrete. Guests can dine at the banquet table or sip a cocktail by the firepit—the yard was designed for a family that loves to entertain. As the center of attention, this backyard had to deliver, as Flint put it, “an awful lot of wow factor.” And what better star for this stage than a perimeter overflow pool with infinity edge? During their first summer with the new pool in 2018, the family made good use of it. “When you’re swimming toward the woods, because of the infinity edge, it’s an incredible feeling,” says Lois. That you can stand on the patio or lawn nearer to the house and be at water level is another dramatic feature, Flint adds. The mirror effect is duplicated in the perimeter overflow spa. And did we mention that none of this is a bother to maintain? Both spa and salt-water pool can be controlled by cellphone right down to the therapeutic jets. “The system runs itself,” says Flint. The Compains, who have three adult children and five grandchildren, also appreciate that Flint’s crew more than doubled the size of the yard. It took demolishing the former pool and the rest of the backyard to get this family off to a completely fresh start, but they already are reaping the rewards of design teamwork.

This page: Natural plantings such as Hameln grasses and native trees and shrubs work to soften the home’s bold angles and create a welcome sanctuary. The oversized gas-burning firepit, when not in barbecue use, doubles as a dinette or coffee table with a stainless-steel cover. Opposite page, top: A banquet-style dining table is just the right fit for this family, which loves to entertain. Largeformat flooring provides a connection between the patio and the great room. Bottom: This oasis can be enjoyed day or night with the elegant illumination of 60 low-voltage landscape lights, which also create depth perception for those gazing out from the home’s many windows.

64

When your backyard says “staycation,” you may never miss the beach at all. One Saddle River home has what it takes to be Entertainment Central, with a banquet-sized table and an infinity-edge pool and spa, but it also can serve as a private sanctuary when it’s family time. The entire design of this oasis complements the new modern home as if it were always meant to take center stage. And it was! Homeowners Daniel and Lois Compain wouldn’t have had it any other way. In fact, because an Edenic landscape was key to their home design plans, they knew it had to be a priority during the construction of their new contemporary house. So there was a meeting of the minds: Home architect Scott Lurie and designer Carolyn Taylor worked with Waldwick-based Thomas Flint Landscape Design & Development to create a modern setting inside and out. One of the home’s outstanding features would be the abundance of windows ready to maximize the view at every angle. “From every room in the house you could see the pool and patio,” explains Lois, describing windows that start at the floor “so you feel like you’re outdoors.” The pressure was on as Flint landscape designer Andy Kosits set out to create a bit of paradise worthy of the spotlight. “We tried to bring the inside out,” says Thomas Flint of the landscape firm. “Inside is very modern and very clean.” Thus it was only natural to continue the simplicity and clean-line aesthetic outdoors. The graphic pattern of stepping stones through the rectangular “lawn” panel (it’s

The mission was to create a chef’s kitchen with commercial appliances and a total of three work stations for culinary artist Cathy, while still making it feel like home for her husband and two adult sons. Designer Peter Salerno pulled it off with a bright fresh look of handcrafted subway tiles for the backsplash and the warmth of walnut cabinetry (including two shallow pantries around the fridge), along with a spacious peninsula—because this kitchen can party too.

When a Wayne homeowner set out to renovate her dark and dated kitchen, the heart of the family’s traditional colonial, the recipe for success was finding a designer who shared her passion—for cooking. That’s because, as a chef (culinary arts and yummy pastry), Cathy needed a kitchen that not only looked great, but also got the job done with state-ofthe-art appliances (like the Miele steam oven) and masterful organization, all while not having to expand upon the room’s roughly 600 square feet. Enter Wyckoff-based designer Peter Salerno, who in addition to his certification in kitchen and bath design has real chef experience at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y. The result of uniting these dual passions—cooking and design—is a kitchen that’s a feast for the eyes and all the senses. Who can resist the smell of Cathy’s favorite bread, focaccia, or the rich taste of homemade ice cream? “I wanted a kitchen designed for function, and Peter was able to do that in an amazing way,” says Cathy. Even her husband, who doesn’t cook, appreciates how transforming their 20-year-old original kitchen (moving only the door to improve the flow) was a win-win all around. What satisfies the eye is the changeup from cherry wood cabinets with dark green counters to what Cathy calls “white and bright.” Think handmade subway tiles shimmering white in a wave effect on the backsplash, greige floor tiles in a larger format and white cabinets contrasted with warm walnut. Another point of interest is the Art Deco tin ceiling with silver leaf finish—the perfect setting for brushed stainless-steel pendant lights over the island. They mimic the industrial look of another highlight, the custom-made hood range, which commands attention like the star of the design. Even the butler’s pantry with its pearl mosaics and Sputnik light fixture combines design and function. A Miele coffee machine is always ready to go, as is the family’s own ice maker. That Salerno used the kitchen’s existing footprint to take counter and working space to the max is this design recipe’s real success story. This page, top: A chef’s delight, the island’s The Galley sink, with 36 inches ready for anything, comes equipped with time-saving accessories such as a cutting board and colander, says Salerno. When the owners of a two-acre property in Short Hills looked out into their backyard domain, they contemplated a vast open lawn. The beautiful home boasted many airy windows, all ready to showcase a sweeping panorama. The only problem was that the view really wasn’t all that enthralling. If ever there was a blank canvas waiting for transformation, this was it. “We had recently moved from another home in Short Hills, and one of our primary motivations was to have a large backyard that could accommodate a pool,” says Rob Marcus, explaining what attracted him and his wife, Wendy, and their four kids to the property.

bluestone and made of glass tiles with a pebble sheen interior finish, it sparkles invitingly. Water from the 180-square-foot raised spa gently cascades into the main pool, imparting an extra level of soothing relaxation. The sensory experience continues with the fragrances, colors and textures afforded by diverse greenery and flora. “The pool is clearly the centerpiece, but the plantings bring the whole backyard to life,” says the homeowner. “Brian is passionate about plants and flowers, and that passion yields incredible results.” Hundreds of lush plantings present a vibrant display. Four Sioux Crape Myrtle trees frame the pool and raised spa in pink perfection while a profusion of annuals, perennials and grasses spills forth from the dry-laid Pennsylvania Colonial walls that wind around one side of the pool or nestle in between the boulders and rock walls that dot the surroundings. To address drainage concerns, French drains were installed along the edges of the patio perimeters; they carry all water to eight dry well tanks buried in the lawn. Cabana leaders and two sump pumps also access this system. To compensate for nonexistent natural draining opportunities, all pool equipment was located nine feet below grade within the cabana basement. “This was done to protect the equipment, especially in the winter; it was also an aesthetic choice to conceal the unsightly apparatus,” Koribanick explains, adding that, as an extra safety measure, an emergency control security system was installed. If anything were to break and threaten leaking in the cabana’s basement, valve closures automatically would be initiated to prevent water damage. “We really love everything about it,” Marcus says of the finished backyard. “It’s beautiful and at the same time extremely functional. After the project, there’s no place we’d rather spend our time. It’s really changed the way we live.”

This page: The pool area, situated between the home and outlying open green space, offers a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor living. Four pink Sioux Crape Myrtles frame the pool and raised spa, while dry-laid Pennsylvania Colonial fieldstone stonework delineates the change in grade. Opposite page, top: The tranquil sound of water flowing into the pool from the raised spa and the bursts of color and textures from trees and flowers add to the serene beauty of this poolside paradise. The nearby cabana, which complements the house’s design, offers easy access. Bottom: The gracious home’s airy windows have prime views of the backyard oasis.

74

“The raw space before the project was actually quite beautiful,” he continues. “We had lots of grass and trees. It just wasn’t the kind of yard you’d want to hang out in all day, every day, all summer long.” Instead, the family “dreamed of an outdoor space that would be the focal point of our family’s summertime activities,” Marcus says. They envisioned a “fun magnet”—a pool and spa with an adjacent cabana that would draw everyone together for leisure-time pleasures. To turn the design-desolate yard into a welcoming oasis, they enlisted Brian J. Koribanick, owner of Landscape Techniques in Nutley. Working with the existing rustic beauty of the property and utilizing the yard’s natural grade changes to maximum advantage, Koribanick came up with clean, simple concepts that harmoniously married landscape and hardscape. “We approached this as we do all of our projects,” he says. “Our approach is to offer our clients multiple preliminary proposals. We’ll help them choose different elements and features from the various options until we custom-create precisely what they want.” In this instance, the clients were very receptive to design collaboration and had realistic expectations of the time that would be required. “We had a great working relationship,” adds the landscape designer. “Our team was on site every day. I’d meet with the owners once a week to consult on details, then follow through accordingly on the work in progress.” “We continued to make modifications throughout the process,” says Marcus. “We were in constant communication, and eventually we got to a place we were happy with.” Over eight months, from one summer into the following spring (with a winter gap), the backyard gradually came to beautiful fruition. The focal jewel is the 1,100-square-foot, free-form pool. Framed by 3,900 square feet of wet-laid, full-range, natural cleft

Designer Sheila Rich left the graceful walnut millwork untouched but lightened the living room with a pair of pale gray Taylor King sofas and a New Zealand wool area rug from Masland Carpets in the same hue. The table shuffleboard game is a clue to the home’s essential purpose: relaxation.

The big house on the dunes was born of a dream. Long before its construction in 2004, back when the owners were young marrieds, they’d vacationed on the Jersey Shore and fantasized about owning a home there. When the fantasy finally became reality, the house welcomed not just the couple but also their growing family, who convened there for 15 years of happy summers and bustling holidays. Today it hums with the energy of three generations: the owners, their grown son and daughter and their 11 grandchildren. But dreams change, and even dream houses can fray around the edges. Two years ago, the owners surveyed the house and realized it was looking tired and no longer functioned as well as it might. Thanks to Monmouth Beachbased designer Sheila Rich, the dark, outdated interior has now been transformed into a space filled with light, equally suitable for elegant dinners and energetic children. A challenge for Rich was to imbue the owners’ traditional aesthetic with what she calls “a sense of freshness and vitality.” She did that in part by introducing a palette of whites and pale grays, enlivened by pops of navy, installing a pale gray grass cloth on the living room

walls, for instance, but keeping intact the original walnut millwork—including the living room’s lavish wainscoting and built-ins. The intricately laid walnut floors were refinished, and also brightened with white and pale gray area rugs throughout. All the surfaces were chosen to hold up to sticky hands and sandy feet. Rich used stain-resistant performance fabrics such as Crypton and Nanotex on virtually all the upholstered furniture, including the living room’s luxurious pale gray sofas and a pair of wing chairs, recovered in a grayand-white patterned Scalamandre fabric that’s water- and stain-repellent. Today’s performance fabrics, the designer notes, are a far cry from the rough-textured synthetics that prevailed a decade or two ago. “Even to the hand,” she says, “they feel beautiful.” A pair of custom ottomans in the living room provide a perfect example; covered in a navy vinyl that has the look and feel of rich leather, they can easily stand up to spilled drinks and damp swimsuits. Virtually nothing in the house is “look but don’t touch.” Rich not only made the seating tougher, she also made it work more efficiently. A small sectional sofa in the living room, for instance, was moved to the more intimate family room and replaced with a pair of sofas that can accommodate a crowd. And she created a kitchen island with a rounded outer edge, she explains, so that diners there no

thanks to a skillful refinishing of all the home’s floors, old and new. The new design deftly incorporates beloved elements from the old, including a series of antique pieces such as a graceful Biedermeier armoire in the dining room. Rich recovered and repurposed a pair of beloved wing chairs, setting them next to a custom table that can be used for a board game or an intimate meal. To elevate the seats to the correct height for dining, she added an extra layer of upholstery; the small table between them has a pedestal rather than legs to accommodate the outsize chairs. That table, with its sleek curvilinear design, is one of a handful of contemporary pieces that feel perfectly at home in the classic interior. A similar custom end table creates a counterpoint to the living room’s sectional sofa, and two super-slender, barely-there standing lamps add illumination without bulk to the family room. They’re functional as well as attractive, providing, says Rich, “a beautiful linear light source for reading.” Those lamps are just two of many small touches and sweeping improvements that make the family home exactly what its owners dreamed it could be: a place to leave work behind and embrace the simple pleasures of sun, sand, and—most important—one another.

82

longer need to feel as if they’re “sitting on the subway.” When the homeowner suggested replacing the chairs around a large circular dining table because she disliked the reddish hue of the wood, Rich recovered them instead, in a graypatterned fabric that swept away the red. Why not replace them? “They were the perfect size and shape to allow 12 chairs around the table,” she explains. An extensive kitchen renovation was critical to increasing the functionality of the home, which is frequently the scene of large catered dinners. The new cast-iron farmhouse sink, for instance, is flanked by two garbage rollouts—one for trash, one for recycling. There are two full-size refrigerator/freezer units, a dual fuel range with six burners and two ovens, a drawer microwave set handily next to the stove and a pot-filler positioned for both the range and the coffeemaker. Increasing the kitchen’s utility are an 8-by-8-foot pantry and a designated baking area with a marble counter for rolling out dough. To maintain a traditional look, the design team “hid” the refrigerators behind panels that matched the white cabinetry and incorporated the home’s original sconces and pendants. The old ceramic tiles were removed and replaced with walnut flooring that blended seamlessly with the wood abutting it,

With custom details such as a large blue hutch in the dining area, designer Anthony Passanante succeeded in turning a dated house into a more current and inviting home that functions well for a busy family of five. “The house gives me the relaxed feeling I was going for,” says the homeowner. “It’s a pretty space. If the weather is bad and you’re stuck indoors, it’s just a wonderful space to enjoy.”

mind that I was going to use him.” The homeowner gave Passanante carte blanche to design the space, and he created all of the custom cabinets and millwork in addition to finding all of the tile, lighting and fixtures. “She was fun to work with because she kind of looked to me to pick everything,” Passanante says. “She trusted me and let me do my thing.” The homeowner requested an open-concept entertaining area in the home, so Passanante designed a unique bar area open to a casual family room where the former formal dining and living rooms were. “It’s definitely the room where we spend the most time,” says the homeowner. “At the end of the evening, after we’ve been out to dinner or when we come off the beach, everyone ends up in the bar area, so it’s nice to have that room to entertain in. We love it.” The former family room was turned into a casual dining area located off the kitchen, where Passanante

This page: “It’s a really fun space for entertaining,” says Passanante about the bar room. There are five stools around a high bar, which features a sink, a dishwasher, a wine fridge, a kegerator (which refrigerates kegs), a microwave oven and lots of storage. Adjacent sits a game table area. Opposite page: In the kitchen, custom cabinetry goes all the way up to nine-foot ceilings, providing lots of storage, while crown molding ties the space into the adjacent dining area. The working island holds the microwave and provides even more storage. The leather finish on the quartzite countertops “tones them down a little bit and gives the kitchen a more relaxed feel,” says Passanante.

After renting in Spring Lake for several summers, a North Jersey couple knew they’d like to own a second home there one day. That day came in 2010, when they spotted a house with great bones just one block from the beach. The only problem? The interior was dated, and the space wasn’t laid out well for their family of five. “We knew we were going to have to add some bathrooms and renovate to make it work for our family,” the wife says. But they made the purchase and enjoyed the 4,000-square-foot home as-is until 2017, when they turned to Anthony Passanante of Anthony Albert Studios in Waldwick to renovate. He had done a renovation for the homeowner in a previous home, and she loved his work. “He’s easy to work with, and he’s really good at knowing what I want when I don’t really know what I want,” she says. “As soon as we were ready to renovate the Spring Lake house, there was no question in my

The kitchen also features an eating area with a soaring cathedral ceiling, which Passanante revamped with shiplap detailing and an oversized light fixture from Visual Comfort. “The kitchen and the dining area are great because now when we have a house full of people, ever yone has a seat at a table,” says the homeowner. To create even more space for the large family, Passanante added bathrooms to two upstairs bedrooms and reconfigured the basement, adding a bedroom and bathroom there as well. “My daughters entertain their college friends a lot, and now there’s plenty of space for everybody,” says the homeowner. “We made every inch of this house work for us.”

This page: Passanante created a sitting area in the master bathroom, enlarging and lowering the windows to maximize the gorgeous water views. A beadboard ceiling and a crystal chandelier from Hudson Valley Lighting complete the space. Opposite page: New railings and detailed molding breathe life into the staircase and landings, as does an oversized lantern from Troy Lighting. Passanante gave the homeowners a coffee/wine bar in a second-floor corner near the master bedroom so they wouldn’t have to go far for a drink while enjoying the view.

90

designed and built a striking blue hutch that houses refrigerator drawers, a TV and extra storage to minimize clutter. Mirrored cabinets reflect light back into the room, and aged brass nautical light fixtures from Hudson Valley Lighting add interest. Passanante also re-stoned an existing brick fireplace. “I love the warmth and texture stone brings to a room,” he says. The adjacent kitchen was updated with new custom cabinets, natural quartzite countertops with a leather finish and a marble subway tile backsplash, which Passanante brought up and over the window above the sink. But the designer’s favorite detail is the custom zinc hood. “It brings in charm and character because it’s handmade and has little imperfections,” he says.

Rebuilt after Superstorm Sandy, a family’s cherished cabana blurs the boundaries between indoors and out—and between quirky and classic. Text by Leslie Garisto Pfaff Architecture and design by Andrew Wilkinson Architect of record Robert Hazelrigg Photography by Barry Halkin

Call it serendipity, or kismet or—as Steven Kassin does—a fluke, but if Kassin and his father hadn’t been out for a stroll in Loch Arbour one chilly spring Sunday in 1995, the trajectory of their lives might have been very different. That day, the pair found themselves contemplating a “FOR SALE” sign posted in front of an old cabana club built right on the beach. Back at their vacation home in nearby Deal, Kassin’s father phoned the real estate agent listed on the sign and discovered that the club’s owner was looking to unload it, and the four-plus acres of beachfront property that surrounded it, for less than a million dollars. With no clear idea of what he was going to do with it, the elder Kassin bought the land and the cabana, complete with grill, fryer and Formica countertops in a style that Kassin describes

A beacon for family and friends, the Kassins’ beachfront cabana has hosted weddings, anniversary celebrations and charity parties since the 1990s.

in light, as much at home in its environment as the beach grasses and rugosa roses that surround it. In fact, architect Andrew Wilkinson’s aim was to dissolve the line between inside and outside. He accomplished that by installing three sets of trifold doors that completely retract, effectively “removing” large swaths of exterior walling. He also built a windowed cupola and two dormers, one facing east, one west, inset with large windows to add volume and let in the enchanted beach light. “What we wanted aesthetically,” says Kassin, “was something that felt like New Jersey coastal—really traditional, timeless beach-town design—but with a more contemporary lens.” Wilkinson achieved that goal, in part, by scaling up the ceiling and sightlines while using traditional materials such as white cedar and ipe, a dense hardwood of which nearly all of New Jersey’s boardwalks were once constructed. From a practical standpoint, all the surfaces had to be tough enough to stand up to a marine environment, which made the choice of flooring particularly tricky. Wilkinson and his

This page: The architect used cool colors and clean lines to create an overarching sense of calm in the cabana’s interior. To the same end, walls, ceilings and beams were all painted in Benjamin Moore’s Designer’s White. RH Modern’s stump coffee tables add a touch of whimsy to an area defined by a pair of open-weave sofas from Palecek and designed for conversation. Opposite page: Three sets of trifold doors open up the cabana to the outside. Because the structure was built directly on the beach, the architect chose materials—including white cedar trellising and decking constructed of ipe, a Brazilian hardwood— that would hold up to the elements. as “classic soda fountain and retro beach vibe.” For a while, his father contemplated running the place as a commercial club—it wasn’t zoned for home occupancy—but in the end he decided to clean it up and use it as a spot for family get-togethers and community events. From the mid-’90s through the summer of 2012, the cabana hosted weddings, anniversary celebrations, bar mitzvahs and charity parties. But more often it was a place for the extended family and their friends to just kick back, enjoy the sand and surf, and hang out together. “Honestly, it changed my life,” says Kassin, a real estate developer and year-round surfer. “It affected our family culture and our interests and how attached we are to nature and the outdoors.” That string of happy summers was washed away, along with the cabana and virtually everything in it, when Superstorm Sandy ravaged the Jersey Shore in 2012. But like so many Shore denizens, Kassin and his family were determined to rebuild. While the renovated space, completed in 2017, includes aesthetic nods to its former funky incarnation, the building that’s risen from the wreckage is something else again: open and airy, awash

The serene and compelling interior design extends outward. Decking, partly shaded by white cedar trellising, lines five sides of the unevenly hexagonal structure; the geometrically intricate trellises help to blur the distinction between indoors and out. In fact, it was the trellising that posed the greatest challenge for Wilkinson, who worked to ensure that it felt “deliberate and artful” in spite of the cabana’s unusual geometry. The plantings—chosen by Kassin, whose personal passion is landscape design—help to soften the building’s angularity. All the plants—among them beach plum, bayberry, rosa rugosa, oat grass, pampas grass, yucca, black pine, hardy hibiscus and daylilies—are native either to the region or to areas with similar climates. After their third summer, says Kassin, they should thrive without irrigation and “come back with a fervor.” The same could be said of the 120-plus family members who’ve spent 20 summers at the cabana and look forward to many more, thanks to Wilkinson’s inspired rebuild. “Our cousins and distant family grew up here; now our children are growing up here,” says Kassin. “It’s been such a blessing for us.”

This page: Outdoor furnishings from RH Modern invite relaxation, while a modern-lined ceiling fan from Minka-Aire provides a breeze when nature doesn’t. Built-in perimeter benches, with removable Sunbrella cushions (in an appropriately sunny yellow), are flanked by plantings of hardy hibiscus. 96

team knew that a wood floor would never withstand another inundation, but they also understood that a traditional porcelain or stone floor would be dangerously slippery under wet feet. They looked at anti-slip flooring but found most of it aesthetically unappealing. In the end, they chose a plank porcelain with the texture and look of wood whose matte surface renders it slipresistant and whose light hue fits in perfectly with the cabana’s overall interior design. Above all, Wilkinson says, he aimed to keep the design “visually calm.” He chose open-weave seating in shades of pale gray, glasstopped occasional tables and a classic shade of white to cover walls, ceilings and ceiling beams. “In general,” notes the designer, “we just wanted to white out the space, offer more of a texture than a color change.” To add some visual interest, Wilkinson and his team used beadboard on the ceiling, which recalls the pre-Sandy structure. The bar is a bit of a design counterpoint, with its eyecatching ribbon-glass countertop. All of the furniture is easily movable, an important consideration given the cabana’s multiple uses and the possibility of extreme weather at the Shore.

EP HENRY When it comes to choosing hardscaping material, sharp-eyed homeowners are choosing EP Henry’s Cast Stone Wall and ColorTech pavers for their hardscaping projects. When you see them, you’ll see the difference. Cast Stone Walls are crafted using molds created from natural stone, so the textures replicate what’s found in nature. Unlike most flat, monochromatic wall systems, the variegated color schemes of the Cast Stone Wall range from cool grays to warm browns and add dimension and depth of color to outdoor living spaces. ColorTech™ pavers are the newest innovation in pavers. Only from EP Henry, the factory applied sealant is cured into the paver during manufacturing. These pavers eliminate the after installation sealing process so homeowners can enjoy the look and stain resistance properties of a topical sealer without the added labor expense and time. Visit www.ephenry.com to see the full line of pavers and walls and to order your free catalog. 800.44.HENRY | ephenry.com

If all you know about vortices revolves around weather or other forces of nature, here’s a twister that you won’t mind seeing outside your home. A vortex fountain combines the soothing sounds of a backyard water feature with the spellbinding figure of a waterspout. Housed inside a clear glass tube, this fountain is the result of a special pump that creates continuous whirlpool conditions, sending spinning water cascading from the tube. Most are outfitted with filters that keep the glass and water crystal clear for optimal viewing. Pre-fabricated fountains can

be purchased and easily installed in a garden or as part of a patio hardscape plan—their unique designs can fit into every environment. Want to dictate the look of your vortex? Companies like Atlantis Water Gardens in Denville or Premium Aquascapes in Bergenfield, which specialize in water feature construction, can work with you to customize the appearance of your vortex fountain, from glass tube shape and height to drainage rock type and color. No matter the design you choose, this garden accent is sure to impress.
