When it’s time to put together one of MORRIS & ESSEX’s Home & Garden issues, I get to experience vicariously the thrill of houses transformed to meet a new need, a new mood, a new epoch in a family’s life—and you, dear readers, get to enjoy the results in the revealing photos we publish.

We get to share the joy, for example, of a North Caldwell homeowner who transformed her basement (page 24). For years she’d procrastinated because of a fear of spiders; finally she commissioned from designer Terri Fiori a renovation that turned that lower level into a magnet for socializing, with a wine-tasting room, a TV-viewing space and a design that charmingly evoked her family roots in Bavaria. What fun! Today, spiders wouldn’t dare intrude.

We can also learn about what is a frequent challenge these days: making an old house more spacious and free-flowing on the inside while keeping it faithful to its heritage on the outside. Take the five-bedroom Maplewood home we showcase on page 20, built in 1916. Designer Denise Jones met that challenge well, giving the owners a modern interior with a new master bath and walk-in closet in the master bedroom, a sliding-door connection between the kitchen and the grill deck and a very practical widened pathway between the kitchen and the dining room.

All of this vicarious experience doesn’t make us experts, I’ll admit. But we’ve got experts on tap too. On page 30, five top designers in Morris and Essex counties share advice about choosing paints. Take just one issue, for example: the finish. For a given use, do you want flat, eggshell, satin or high-gloss? And let page 16 enlighten you about “statement” lights.

We’re all fortunate that spring is in full flower, and it’s full of special occasions. Earth Day is April 22, Cinco de Mayo is May 5 (in case your Spanish is rusty), Mother’s Day is May 12 and Memorial Day is May 27. You’ll find tips for marking all of these on pages 10-11.

If spring has a downside, it’s seasonal allergies, which afflict some of us with sneezes, runny noses and itchy eyes. There are several treatments available, both short- and long-term, and you’ll learn from two local allergists about them on page 18.

GO AHEAD, MAKE MOM’S DAY

Breakfast or brunch is a given for Mother’s Day (May 12), but that oh-so-important woman in your life deserves more than a great meal. Here are other ideas:

• Shower her with flowers: Good news if you’ve not yet ordered a bouquet for Mom—many local florists can help, and their expertise is bloomin’. PUPPY LOVE

Name: Mabel, a 7-month-old Bernese mountain dog

Owners: Amanda Jones and Matthew Wilk, Montclair Bernese mountain dogs are known for their delightful personalities, and Mabel lives up to that reputation in spades. From the first moment Amanda and Matthew met her, they knew she was meant to be in their family. This pup makes friends with everyone she meets at the dog park, though her favorite canine playmate is her “cousin” Sammie, a 3-year-old golden retriever. Mabel is never afraid to express her needs—as Amanda says, “She is very vocal. She’ll ‘talk’ to us all throughout the day, especially when she wants snuggles or treats.”

Mabel also likes playing with soccer balls, peanut butter and her “Miss Unicorn” toy as well as exploring the Essex area. She can’t get enough of the “pup cups” at La Fontaine Cafe in Montclair—but she doesn’t like everything. Amanda says she’s not a fan of skateboards, suitcases or puddles. “She will absolutely not get her paws wet walking through one,” Amanda explains. And when she’s done playing and crashes for a nap, Mabel often ends up asleep on her back, with her paws straight up in the air.

A Life Of Giving

Joyce McGrath of West Orange has racked up more than 5,200 hours of volunteer work for good causes. Praise her, and she insists on sharing the credit.

At 79, West Orange resident

Joyce McGrath is a wife, a mother, a grandmother and a great-grandmother who has spent the past two decades dedicating her time to volunteer causes. She has advised Confirmations at her First Presbyterian Church in Caldwell, led youth missions to build and fix houses through the Christian nonprofit The Pittsburgh Project, driven down to New Orleans in the wake of Katrina and manned a weekly soup kitchen. Though her career background is as a flight attendant and a real estate agent, Joyce and her husband of 58 years, Chuck, have found themselves drawn back to volunteering again and again. In late 2023, Joyce’s church surprised her with the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award, signed by President Biden, in recognition of her 5,200 hours of volunteer service. Her reaction? “I couldn’t have done it alone.”

What led you to volunteer work?

My husband and I have been doing mission work almost from the day we got married. When we had our first child, we decided we wanted to go back into the church and work with youth. We started out as youth advisors at the local junior high in Chicago, where we lived at the time. When we moved back to New Jersey, we joined Caldwell’s First Presbyterian Church, where we’ve done most of our mission work. We started taking kids on mission trips, among other things. For me, it almost always involves food, for some reason—I guess that goes back to my airline days.

How does the rest of your family feel about your work?

kids, mentoring these young people and watching them grow into these wonderful adults—it was incredible. We still keep in touch with many of them.

Tell us about the communities that form around volunteer work. Who here in North Jersey goes above and beyond?

Even the missions I took on by myself, without my husband, I was never alone. That’s something I can’t say enough. No mission can be carried out by one person. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention these people—Laura Schalles, who has been my partner in crime and in mission for close to 20 years. Dave Johnson, Dwayne Jacobson, Frank Busby, Doug and Mary Derrickson—they all helped just as much as Chuck and I did. This award I was given, I am so immensely proud and blessed to be a part of it, but I could have never done that by myself. That wasn’t one person winning that award; that was for all of us.

What do you think calls a person to do this kind of volunteering?

By the time Chuck and I got really into it, my children were older and headed off to college. But they love to hear about what we do.

Tell us more about these youth trips. Our church works with The Pittsburgh Project, a nonprofit organization in Pennsylvania. We would do

housework for people who have a mental illness, or a disability, or an economic situation. First and foremost, we brought those kids [from the Caldwell church] there to help, but also to learn. And they did. The kids came back changed. People came up to us in church and ask, “What did you do to these kids?” All of them got a taste of making a difference, and they wanted to do more. I couldn’t believe the impact it made. It makes my husband well up when he talks about it. Do you feel like that was your most impactful mission?

All of them, in some way, are impactful. But The Pittsburgh Project is one of my favorite things I’ve ever done. Everything we did there, but especially working with our youths. Being with the kids, and part of the

I don’t know if it’s one type of person, but the people I’ve worked with over the years are people people. People who look at the world and say, “I want to help.” For me, it’s just that. I just feel the need to do this.

Any hobbies, other than volunteer work?

I love to garden. Over the pandemic, I started painting little gnomes to add into my garden as well. What one moment from your work has really stayed with you?

I go back to my work in the soup kitchen. And we have regulars there. People remember you. They’ll ask where you’ve been. I ended up with pneumonia back in September and missed a whole month of the kitchen. When I got back, everyone said, “We worried about you.” It’s about care. And it’s just one drop in the bucket.

WHEN THE HIGH POLLEN COUNT HAS YOU REACHING FOR RELIEF, HERE’S WHAT WORKS—AND WHAT DOESN’T.

The onset of spring should be an exciting time. The days are longer, green is making a comeback and we’re all looking forward to throwing open some windows and letting the air in. But for many Americans the warming trend of these days also means that seasonal allergies are on the march. According to the Allergy and Asthma Foundation of America, as of 2021, 26 percent of adults and 19 percent of children had been diagnosed with seasonal allergies.

Coughing, sneezing, itchy and runny eyes, a tight chest, a sinus headache—these symptoms may seem mundane, but they can be debilitating when they’re chronic. “Allergy care can become confusing because there are so many over-the-counter options,” says Archana Mehta, M.D., an allergist in ParsippanyTroy Hills. “If someone is confused, or they’re taking medications and not feeling better, there are lots of solutions we can offer them.”

Salwa Elias, M.D., an allergist in Morris Plains, adds: “The effectiveness of the treatments we have available is well-documented.”

Looking for seasonal-allergy relief? MORRIS & ESSEX sat down with Dr. Elias and Dr. Mehta to discuss some facts, some common misconceptions and some advice on what works:

Can nasal irrigation help? Saline sprays or nasal irrigation can be a good immediate first step to make yourself feel better. They’re a way for you to flush out your sinuses at home, both to remove the irritating allergen and to soothe in the short term. Both doctors recommend these treatments to their patients. “Nasal irrigation should always be tried first, because it can provide fast, nonspecific relief,” says Dr. Elias. “I always recommend saline irrigations either daily or as needed, depending on the patient’s condition.”

Dr. Mehta suggests consulting a doctor before incorporating nasal irrigation into your routine, though. “If a patient has a deviated septum, or a very high level of swelling inside the nose, then saline irrigation can have adverse effects,” she explains. “It’s always good to talk to a doctor first.”

Is local honey an option? There’s some indication that eating honey, a popular at-home treatment, can

introduce pollen allergens into your system and help you build up an immunity to them over time. It’s not a bad theory; Dr. Mehta says that the concept is similar to sublingual immunotherapy, which places small amounts of medication under a patient’s tongue. “It may help mild allergy symptoms, but it hasn’t been proven scientifically,” says Dr. Mehta. “However, it can’t hurt, and it’s a great way to kill a sugar craving if you have one.”

Dr. Elias echoes the sentiment, saying, “It may help the body to build a tolerance to local allergens, but is not proved to be effective in alleviating allergy symptoms and does not replace immunotherapy.”

Will increasing probiotics give relief? What about Vitamin C? Recent studies have suggested that a heathy microbiome in the intestinal tract can lower the risk of allergies in general. “There are studies being done regarding certain probiotics helping to reduce food allergies, so it’s certainly possible that they could improve seasonal allergies as well,” says Dr. Mehta, “but nothing has been proven yet. In general, they’re good for your gut health, and anything that reduces inflammation might reduce allergy symptoms as well.”

Dr. Elias offers a similar perspective on both probiotics and Vitamin C, which is a known antiinflammatory. “Increasing probiotics and Vitamin C in the diet can help a patient’s general health, but will not necessarily make a difference in alleviating allergy symptoms.”

Can you predict the allergy season? There’s no easy way. “It’s hard to predict, honestly,” says Dr. Mehta, who explains that the allergy season is directly tied to the weather. In New Jersey, allergy season tends to be a two- or three-week period, often the last two weeks of April or the first two weeks of May, when oak, birch and maple trees open up and are pollinated. The exact time and severity depend on the weather, which is what makes it so difficult to predict precisely. A rainier spring, for instance, will make for a milder allergy season, while a dry one will be worse.

Dr. Mehta also notes that the allergy season has been getting longer and stronger as the climate warms. “Last year, I remember taking a walk in Denville and seeing

birch trees being pollinated on Jan. 19,” she says. “Birch pollen is the light green pollen you see on your car in the spring. We are seeing seasons getting longer as the climate changes.”

On top of the time in the season, time of day can also make a difference in the severity of allergies, Dr. Mehta says. “Pollen counts are often highest at midday, and lowest earlier in the day, when there’s still dew on the ground. Knowing that can help people plan.”

Is there a cure for seasonal allergies? Allergies are one of the most common chronic conditions in the United States, but Dr. Elias says there is hope for those looking to ease their symptoms for good. Immunotherapy, also known as allergy shots, is very appealing to people for this reason. “Immunotherapy is the only disease-modifying treatment available for several common allergies,” she says. “It modifies the immune response a body has to an allergen.”

Dr. Mehta calls immunotherapy “the most effective way of reducing allergies,” and then explains: “The treatment has two phrases, a buildup phase and a maintenance phase. During the buildup phase, you come in for a shot once a week, and the repeated exposure desensitizes you to the allergen. Your body becomes more tolerant. During the maintenance phase, you come in once a month to ensure that you remain less reactive.”

“When the right patient goes through the treatment, it is very effective,” Dr. Mehta adds. “Many have a lot of success with it.”

There are lifestyle changes that can ease symptoms in the short term. Dr. Mehta recommends wearing sunglasses when outside to create a barrier from the pollen, taking frequent showers, keeping windows closed and using air purifiers. But in many cases, medical treatment can also bring a long-term improvement in quality of life.

“There are many treatment options available,” says Dr. Mehta. “If every spring you’re taking multiple medications and still going to urgent care for steroids because of how severe your symptoms are, there are treatments to ensure that doesn’t happen. We can spare you from that.”

A Brooklyn couple refused to recognize the word “impossible” as they took on the redesign of their five-bedroom Maplewood colonial—an oldie from 1916—with modern style and amenities. A big project, yes, but they prized the location for their school-age son. So they launched a redesign in 2022 focused on functionality and a mid-century-modern vibe.

They could dare to dream thanks to pre-construction planning—the specialty of Denise Jones, owner of Bedminster-based J2 Design Studio, who crafted a master plan that guaranteed realism. In recommending Jones for the job, Archuleta Builders realized it would far exceed aesthetics, as the couple’s goals included creating a master bath and a walk-in closet, gutting the kitchen and maximizing open space.

“Denise was a great partner in realizing the visions we had for our renovation,” explains one of the homeowners. “With a 106-year-old house, the spaces can be tricky.”

century-old homes: an open flow for easy-breezy get-togethers. The 8-foot opening Jones carved between the kitchen and dining room “makes an incredible difference,” she says, imagining the challenge of carrying a Thanksgiving turkey through the former 3-foot span amid a flurry of activity.

To give this entertainment zone a boost, Jones reoriented the kitchen to provide direct access to the back grill deck via Anderson Glass sliding doors. Removing a closet added 2 feet and helped to create a rectangular canvas rare in older homes.

Farewell to stained knotty-pine cabinets; the redesign boasts white Shaker custom cabinets by Wolf Designer accented with the slate blue of the four-seater island, where none existed before. A fitting focal point, the island stars Rhea by Valiant, a Statuario in a sea of cool white quartz with gold-lined industrial pendants above. The backsplash reintroduces blue in its honed limestone mosaic. Older homes are notorious for set-

tling, but who can tell? Jones varied the thickness of custom millwork for a seamless look in cabinets and ceiling.

“The kitchen was a huge focus for us, and Denise really helped us figure out how to comfortably fit the pieces we wanted—including a four-person island, a pantry and comfortable passageways,” says the homeowner.

The couple also had the luxury of a rectangular canvas in the dining room, where they introduced a Dot 14 multi-orb chandelier and a DWR wood table with molded plastic chairs for a clean look, while refinished hardwood floors infuse warmth. “We enjoy the mid-century aesthetic with clean, simple lines,” says the homeowner.

Perfect harmony between old and new took effort—in fact, the entire HVAC system was upgraded, eliminating boxy radiators. With entertainment still the focus, Jones oriented the table for optimum flow.

The master bedroom cried out for a sanctuary bathroom, so Jones

got creative again. The home, she says, “had great bones, a great place to start, but lacked modern-day amenities like a master bath.” Jones bought out 7 feet of space from hallway closets for the redesign that included a new wall. Now, not only does the couple have their privacy, but they also gained a soaking tub by Victoria & Albert, a floating double-sink walnut vanity by Lacava and a separate shower in polished statuary marble.

For the walk-in closet on their list, Jones sliced space from a sunroom and turned the rest into a lounge leading into the bedroom. By giving up existing closet space, they got a bed-

room that could fit a king-sized bed that sits on refinished hardwood floors, instead of plush carpet, Jones said. Abstract paintings tastefully reveal this couple’s modern style.

There are no compromises built into this design, only pathways to bringing the homeowners’ vision to life, making the move from Brooklyn worthwhile.

Pleased with Jones for opening the door to possibilities, the homeowner says: “She took our ideas and top goals and designed the layout so we could have a seamless and beautiful space…She had a great eye for the balance, and it allowed us to get everything we imagined.”

A self-proclaimed arachnophobe, a North Caldwell homeowner has made it a habit to stay out of the cellars of homes. “I don’t do basements,” she says. “I have a huge fear of spiders.”

That’s why her four-bedroom Craftsman-style home’s “lower level”—a euphemism—needed a redesign more than most. Now, with a new winetasting room inspired by her family’s Bavarian roots, this homeowner is breaking her own rules about basements—although she still occasionally sends her husband down to check for any “intruders.”

Perhaps understandably, the home’s lower level was left to last in the roomby-room renovation that was launched shortly after the couple purchased the place 17 years ago to raise two boys. With the passing in 2021 of the homeowner’s mom, the family made a discovery: a wine barrelhead carved with her mom’s family name and native town. That town was Randersacker in Bavaria, Germany, where winemaking spans generations. (“The whole town has vineyards,” says the homeowner.) The barrelhead helped spark a transformation. Before, the lower level had become “a catch-all for junk.” Today, it’s a hit with social gatherings.

The designer was Terri Fiori of the eponymous Wyckoff design firm, with whom the family worked for years and who “always knew the right direction to go.” Not long after the barrelhead discovery, Fiori took on the mission of integrating the basement into everyday life.

Whether or not the home team scores, the new TV room on the redone lower level of this North Caldwell home is something to celebrate, with comfort and contrast from olive swivel chairs and a 10-foot neutral sofa.

“I wanted to have the feeling of a charming small town in Germany—you know, to have it feel like a small restaurant,” she says. “So I thought the banquette was the perfect focal point for below the barrelhead.” The mustardyellow banquette by Craig Allen Designs is easily the homeowner’s favorite spot. “It almost has a Swiss Alps or a diamond-shaped pattern that was to me very European,” the designer notes.

Just as in any good restaurant, performance fabric by Elitis takes the “Ohno!” out of “Uh-ohs” with wine, while offering a soft velvet. The custom table by Contemporary Craftsman unites warm wood and a cold black iron base with a “handmade feel” that complements hand-forged accessories in a lightup display cabinet. The room is designed to be a true showcase for the couple’s treasures from their jaunts to Germany.

No room at the table? Pull up a faux Navy leather stool with brass accents at the 6-foot, granite-and-mahogany wine-tasting bar, where wrought-iron wall sconces illuminate your selection. For high contrast with the yellow, Fiori deviated from the traditional German bar scene with faux crocodile navy wallpaper that now turns heads. Her take

on this Big Croco by Elitis? “I thought it was something completely unexpected.”

Where the barrelhead takes center stage, an antique mirror works to open the space across the entire back wall. Fiori chose darker cabinetry, not only for function, but also to create a mood with polished countertops of absolute black granite.

Like this room’s barrelhead inspiration, the 40-inch-by-60-inch marble mural (honed for contrast) between Gothic-arched mahogany cabinets also tells a story. “We took a photograph from my clients’ mom’s hometown, and we replicated that into a mosaic,” she says. Glass shelves stretch across the front to ensure that no space is wasted.

To enhance the room’s European charm, the designer mimicked cobblestone with the flooring by Bergen Brick, Stone & Tile, while overhead she conquered a height challenge with embossed tin metal silver. “It looks really cool,” she says, “and it reflects the light.”

refrigerator, all floor-to-ceiling. It’s a familiar haunt for these empty nesters to gather with friends for wine and a charcuterie board she can serve with ease.

For the avid football fans in the house, Fiori made the lower level come alive with a TV room that incorporates the rich flavor of Bavaria in regional photographs by a relative of the family, Michael Malandra. While images of a scooter and streetcar burst with color, the grape harvest is celebrated in black and white, creating a connection to the wine-tasting room further perpetuated by the dark cabinetry. “They still do this—go out there and harvest grapes,” says the homeowner. “A lot is still done by hand.” The harvest photo cleverly hides a well window to banish that basement vibe, which Fiori also remedies with raised panels instead of flat walls.

While creating interest with patterns and contrasting colors, each piece of furniture maximizes the joy of the game experience: ottomans from Samuelson Furniture score as footrests, olive velvet chairs by EJ Victor with accessory tables swivel between conversation and the screen, and a neutral sofa offers 10 feet of viewing comfort. Dual ottomans that cradle a glass table are meant to move where needed.

To give this room its own personality, Fiori supersized parquet tile—honed to avoid slips. “We wanted the look of wood and the warmth of wood but the practicality of porcelain,” explains Fiori. No tin metal silver here—rather, detail gives the drop ceiling a unique architectural feel. Sconces with blacksatin finish complement the room’s recessed lighting.

One challenge the TV room faced was that there was no room for a TV— until the designer arranged to close a wall, that is. Another was the logistics of fitting the 10-foot sofa down the blue-trellis-rug stairs—a feat accomplished with two smaller sections.

Getting rid of that creepy, crawly feeling for which basements are notorious took some creative design and the right inspiration. But with the completion of the project in February, the homeowners now have a lower level they can enjoy and be proud of.

As for the mom who inspired the wine-tasting room with a barrelhead, the homeowner knows she’d approve. “I think she would have thought it was really special,” she says, “because it’s filled with all things from her town and from her area.” Right down—as she might have added— to the wine glasses.

COLOR RULES

It’s impossible to overstate what painting does for a room’s design. It is the foundation of the vibe and visual story of a space. The color of the walls can make a room warm and cozy—or surprising—or forbidding. While there are different ways to “get it right,” these are decisions you surely don’t want to get wrong. MORRIS & ESSEX sought out five designers in our counties; their advice can help you choose paints wisely and coordinate them with the other elements of the design you’re striving for.

CHOOSE YOUR PAINT TYPE

As sustainability becomes a priority for both homeowners and designers, paints with low volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are growing more popular. VOCs can have negative effects on the environment, as well as home air quality. “We try to use low- to noVOC paint in all of our projects,” says Alicia Bohn of DNA. Oil-based paint has fallen out of favor for its longer drying time high as well as its high VOCs. Grace Liloia avoids it entirely, remarking that “oil-based paint not only has an odor, I also find that white oil-based paint usually yellows over time.” As Alicia Bohn says, “Oil-based paint often has to be used if it was already there before you decided to repaint,” as other paints struggle to stick to it. Lower-VOC options are expanding the market with alternatives such as milk paint, clay paint and soy-based paint, which all have wonderful color payoffs. For spaces that deal with more moisture, Katja van der Loo suggests, “there are specific ‘bath and spa’ paints, which can handle the environment.”

START WITH THE FINISH

If you’re debating among flat, eggshell, satin and high-gloss, Megan Pisano offers one word to guide your choice: “kids!” The higher-gloss a paint, the easier the surface is to clean. However, there’s a downside, as higher-gloss finishes also show more imperfections and can be difficult to repaint. Pisano follows up with her happy medium, saying: “We look at which room kids use the most when deciding on a gloss, but often go with eggshell for most rooms. It’s easily cleanable, and doesn’t show dings and marks as easily as higher-gloss.” Liloia suggests choosing this aspect of your paint with function in mind. “How are you using the room?” she asks. “Who will be using it? Is it a high- or low-traffic area?” Valenta sings the praises of the low-luster finish. “Give it a try,” she says. “It is similar to an eggshell finish, but more lightly reflective and smoother. It offers a rich appearance.”

PICK AN APPEALING CEILING

It’s easy to forget about what has been called your “fifth wall.” But all of our experts encourage paying attention to the ceiling—its hue can completely transform a room’s feeling. As Liloia says, “Painting a ceiling a lighter color brings openness and brightness to the look and feel of the room. You get the opposite effect with a darker paint color. Going with a darker color gives the room an added impact, similar to a mural effect.” Sun Ju Valenta explains the mechanics behind this illusion: “If you are in a room with a dark ceiling, it gives us the illusion of depth because dark color is less reflective than light color.” For specific color suggestions, van der Loo adds: “Using a pale blue or a pale greige color will soften a ceiling and add a bit of interest.”

TEND TO THE TRIM

This is a part of a room where every designer encourages you, the homeowner, to let your style and personality shine through. “There are no rules,” says Pisano. “It really depends on the look you are going for. For a more elevated space, you can up the contrast even more by painting the trim in a high-gloss.” Liloia enjoys playing with trim color, and offers two recent examples. “I usually paint my door and window trims a white or off-white color,” she says. “In some cases, I also like painting the door and window casings black, to add a contrast.” In most of the DNA team’s projects, they aim to create contrast, but it’s once again not a hard-and-fast rule. A similar visual contrast might be achieved instead by accent pieces and furnishings. “If all the color is in your art and your furniture, maybe you don’t need the color on the walls,” says Bohn. In this case, a matching trim color can create a canvas for those pieces to stand out and take center stage. “In spaces with low ceilings,” van der Loo adds, “it’s sometimes better for the paint on trim to coordinate with the wall color, so the room doesn’t feel too small.”

SPEAK WITH THE ACCENTS

Accent walls exist to create visual interest, and to break up the flow of a room. Valenta explains: “An accent wall is typically the first thing that draws someone’s attention. It creates the ‘first impression.’” However, take caution—accent walls are easy to get wrong and, as Liloia says, they disrupt the symmetry of a room, something she personally likes to avoid. She says: “I design symmetrically, and it drives me a little crazy when one wall looks different compared to the other three walls in a room.” Liloia also suggests avoiding them outright if you have a room with sloped ceilings, as an accent wall can instantly make the space look busy. Pisano likes using this focal point behind features that draw the eye already. “I love using accent walls behind a bed,” she says. As long as you’re not overloading the space, Bohn and her colleagues at DNA say no one should be afraid of accent walls, and that they offer good solutions to common design problems. “They are a nice way to refresh a space on a small budget,” says Bohn. “We like moody paint colors for accent walls. To make sure you’re not overwhelming the space you have, consider how your eye moves when you look at it. You want your gaze to move around a room, rather than staying fixed on one particular spot.”

D.C.’s Smithsonian museums are trademark attractions of the city, and display art just as extensively as they display history. The Smithsonian American Art Museum challenges you to put yourself “within the American artistic landscape” and describes itself as “the global leader and trusted source on American art and craft.” Its modern and contemporary art collection is extensive, along with pieces that make history vivid, like Isaac Julien’s image installation exploring the life of Frederick Douglass (on display until the end of 2026). The Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery almost needs no introduction, as its collection of the faces that form the American identity is unrivaled. Anderson House, in a 1905 Beaux-Arts mansion, preserves the memory of the American Revolution, while The Kreeger Museum on Foxhall Road revels in 19th and 20th century art. And that just scratches the surface; the capital has more than 80 museums.

Off the beaten path: The Phillips Collection is our nation’s first modern-art museum, created in 1921. Small and intimate, it’s situated in founder Duncan Phillips’ old home, and the pieces are often arranged to allow for connections and conversations between different eras of art. With work from such artists as Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Pablo Picasso, this is a hidden gem worth uncovering.

You knew this one was coming, but don’t groan! We have some of the best art displays in the world right in our counties’ backyards. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is the largest art museum in the Americas and the fourth largest in the world. Its collection spans more than 5,000 years, and even if you’ve visited before there’s always something new to catch your eye, as exhibits rotate frequently. On display now is “Lineages,” a collection of Korean art, and “Grounded in Clay,” which displays Pueblo pottery. The Met also has daily events and tours, many of them family friendly. Another NYC giant is the Museum of Modern Art, known familiarly as MOMA. It’s one of the world’s best destinations for modern art, one where each piece is meant to challenge you, impress you and make you think. If you’ve ever thought it would be amazing to see Vincent van Gogh’s “The Starry Night” in person, you can do that at MOMA.

Of course, NYC offers more than the giants. On Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District there’s the Whitney Museum of American Art, which concentrates on work from the 20th and 21st centuries. (If you’re still getting used to the Whitney’s decade-ago move downtown from its Upper East Side address, remember that the museum’s first location, when it opened in 1931, was on West 8th Street in Greenwich Village.) And the New Museum of Contemporary Art, an architectural wonder on the outside in addition to its collections inside, explores under-recognized artists. It often does full catalogues of artists’ work before they reach true mainstream recognition. The Big Apple features more than 90 other museums and galleries. Off the beaten path: If you’re burned out from the sheer NYC scale of the bigger museums, you can stop by the American Folk Art Museum, smaller in size and in scope. NEW HAVEN, CT.

About a two-hour drive will take you to New Haven, where art collections are extensive and Yale University is almost a museum itself, with nearly 300 years of history and architecture. Wander the open parts of the campus for glorious clock towers and arches. The Yale University Art Gallery holds the distinction of being the oldest gallery in America; it offers free admission every day. There’s lots to see here, from John Trumbull’s “The Declaration of Independence” (you know this one, even if you don’t know you do) to Greek urns from 500 B.C.E. Ancient and modern works, fine art and crafts, this is a destination that has it all and displays it extensively. While you’re exploring the campus, you may also browse the Yale Center for British Art, which has the biggest collection of its namesake work outside the United Kingdom. That collection includes landscapes by Romantic greats J. M. W. Turner and Richard Parkes Bonington.

The New Haven Museum takes a more historical slant, but is no less worthwhile. Inside you’ll find displays of local crafts and handmade furnishings, which tell visual histories of the city and of design. It features an exhibition of signs and sign art from throughout New Haven’s history and displays an extensive photography collection, going all the way back to the invention of the medium.

Off the beaten path: If you’re looking for something a little looser (and more suitable for little ones), the Connecticut Children’s Museum is a great option. Every one of its exhibits is community inspired and friendly for all ages and levels of accessibility. Nearly everything is interactive, including its recreation of the Great Green Room from the classic storybook Goodnight, Moon This one will get your child excited about learning—but good luck getting her or him to leave!

The City of Brotherly Love has an incredible arts community, and it’s reflected in its collection of museums. It’s also only about a two-and-a-half-hour drive away. When you arrive, it’s best to not overthink where to start—go to the Philadelphia Museum of Art and get ready to spend hours wandering the halls (and, yes, get a picture on the Rocky stairs). Its collections and galleries span hundreds of years and hundreds of countries. Right now, it’s spotlighting American photography in the 1970s, while the permanent collections include Impressionist and Renaissance pieces by artists such as Edgar Degas and Sandro Botticelli. If the sheer size of that seems difficult to grapple with, turn your attention to the Institute of Contemporary Art. Affiliated with University of Pennsylvania, it’s where to go to see art innovation. Nearly all the artists on display here are still living, and exhibits are constantly updating.

For a smaller, focused gallery experience, visit the Rodin Museum. Dedicated to sculptor Auguste Rodin, who is considered the founder of modern sculpture and known for his masterpiece “The Thinker,” it is the largest collection of his work outside Paris. This museum showcases some of the most lifelike sculptures ever created, and it often stages exhibits to highlight individual details of Rodin’s work. And that’s just the start; Philly has dozens of other art centers to catch your eye.

Off the beaten path: The Ryerss Museum is operated by the Philadelphia Museum of Art, but located about a half hour away from it. Displayed in the Ryerss Mansion (which still contains much of the original 19th century furnishings), this is an eclectic museum that grew from Joseph Waln Ryerss’s personal collection. Art spills from the original first floor of the house and into two galleries in the rear, much of it from China, Tibet, Japan and India. How Sweet It Is!

These chocolate delights are a perfect treat any time of year— and you won’t feel guilty going back for more.

TASTES

LIGHT & DARK CHOCOLATE MOUSSE

Yields 4 servings

INGREDIENTS

n 1/2 cup plain chocolate

n 1/2 cup white chocolate

n 5 oz. double cream

n 3 large eggs, separated

n 2 Tbs. orange flavored liqueur, brandy or rum (optional)

n crumbled chocolate waferbar or cocoa for garnish

DIRECTIONS

Break the two chocolates into two small bowls, melt in the microwave or place one at time over a pan of simmering water. Cool slightly.

Lightly whip the cream until it forms soft peaks. Whisk the egg whites in a separate bowl until they are shiny and stiff.

Stir the liqueur (optional) and two egg yolks into the dark chocolate, then fold in one third of the cream and half the egg whites.

Stir the remaining egg yolk into the white chocolate, then fold in the remaining cream and egg whites.

Layer the two mousses into four glasses and decorate with grated chocolate. Chill for at least 1 hour before serving.

CHOCOLATE MOUSSE TUILES WITH FRESH RASPBERRIES

Yields 4 servings

INGREDIENTS

n 1 14.5 oz. can coconut cream or full-fat coconut milk

n 1/2 cup dark chocolate of choice, chopped

n 1 tsp. coconut oil

n 2 Tbs. maple syrup

n 1 tsp. vanilla extract

n store-bought chocolate cups (e.g. glassine chocolate candy cups)

DIRECTIONS

In a large bowl, add the coconut cream/milk. Using a hand mixer, beat for about one minute, until smooth and creamy, then set that aside.

Next, in a small bowl, melt the dark chocolate and coconut oil. Do this in the microwave in two 30-second increments, stirring in between each interval until the chocolate is smooth and creamy. If you don’t use a microwave, simply melt the chocolate and coconut oil over a pan of simmering water.

Pour the chocolate into the bowl with the coconut cream/milk, along with the maple syrup and vanilla.

Use the hand mixer again, and beat until combined well, and the mixture is smooth and creamy, using a spatula to scrape down the sides of the bowl.

Divide the mixture evenly among 4 chocolate cups. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to firm up to a thick consistency. Top each one with fresh raspberries and enjoy!

Add the amaretto, bourbon, lemon juice, syrup, egg white and bitters to a cocktail shaker without ice. Shake for 15 seconds. Add the ice to the cocktail shaker and shake again for 30 seconds. It consisted of an online survey delivered directly to agents across Essex County via email as well as internet research. Raising The Bar

Pine Brook’s new Tavern 73 proves it’s a great place to dine when there’s a big game on. (And when there isn’t.)

A sports bar is an obvious destination when there’s a major game to watch, but can it be a good choice for any other occasion? For date night, an after-work get-together, a family dinner or a random weeknight, perhaps?

On Super Bowl Eve in February, a friend and I decided to check out Tavern 73 along busy Route 46 in Pine Brook, which had opened about a month and a half earlier. It’s not a sports bar per se, but it has an abundance of game-day essentials on the menu such as wings, burgers and cocktails as well as big-screen TVs in the large bar area.

For this outing, we skipped the bar and sat at a booth in the main dining room. It was a spacious area, large enough for a group yet still cozy for two. The menu options too catered to a wide range of appetites: shareable appetizers for the table, salads for vegetarians, steaks and sandwiches for carnivores.

Let’s talk about those apps. Besides the aforementioned wings, selections include nachos, sliders and calamari as well as elevated offerings like coconut shrimp and steamed clams. We went with tavern bacon: two enormous, thick-cut slabs of meat. This dish is often presented hanging clotheslinestyle at more upscale eateries, but Tavern’s version is served conveniently flat on a castiron plate. The presentation didn’t affect the quality or flavor, as each piece was crisp, tender and a pleasure to eat. No ordinary breakfast meat, this bacon was divine on its own, and we essentially left the companion tangy and zesty sauce untouched.

Our second starter defined the term “elevated pub grub”: Prince Edward Island mussels. Unlike many restaurants serving New American cuisine, Tavern offers a choice of sauces to accompany the meaty shellfish. We chose a garlic white wine sauce (other options were red and spicy sauces) as the base of the dish, which provided wonderful flavoring. After we devoured each mussel (we honestly could’ve had another plateful of the delicacies), we sopped up every drop

of the remaining sauce with the generous amounts of bread that came with the dish. Nothing’s wasted on our watch!

We maintained that hungry-man bravado when our entrees arrived.

Though Tavern’s menu tempted with an assortment of steak-lover mains—I’m looking at you, 12-ounce Wagyu strip—I went with “the other white meat”: a massive double-cut pork chop. While the bacon appetizer had been an amazing piece of pork, the chop was simply on another level. On appearance alone it belonged on Instagram: perfect sear marks, juices still running. And each bite of the tender meat was seemingly better than the last thanks to the Montreal seasoning and Luger sauce (the same one served with the bacon app). The meat came with two sides (I selected Caesar salad and grilled asparagus from about two dozen options), but I finished the pork chop well before clearing the plate of everything else.

My friend was also torn when ordering. After a long internal debate between baby-back ribs and a barbecue brisket sandwich, she threw a curve and ordered short-rib tacos. Each of the three tacos was stuffed with melt-in-your-mouth short-rib meat, marinated and flavored with a festive blend of pineapple, cilantro, avocado, jalapeño and other spices.

Though I begged for one whole taco, she gave me only a small bite of one. After tasting it, I understood why she wanted them all to herself.

In lieu of dessert, we capped our meal with selections from the extensive cocktail menu. Tavern’s take on an Arnold Palmer, called the Pinebrook Palmer, is definitely a sip I’d choose again. My friend reported the same for her cranberry mule. Perhaps we’ll be having those drinks—as well as more filling dishes—again sooner rather than later. (We won’t even wait for the next big game.)
