In this issue of Beecroft & Bull magazine, we continue to share with you our love of style and the good life. We know you appreciate the best, as we do, in the timeless design of the powerful new Lamborghini Aventador (page 24); and in fine timepieces, as exemplified by the groundbreaking new editions from Audemars Craig and bryan beecroft Piguet (page 28). How nicely this is woven in with our sartorial passions. The market exuded more vitality, creativity and optimism than it has in years. Once again we have done our best at presenting an interesting balance of innovation and tradition, of wit and wisdom, and of color, both radiant and understated. We enjoy offering the best of Italy from houses such as Canali, Isaia and Luciano Barbera, and pairing them with classics offered by Peter Millar, Robert Talbott, Samuelsohn and the like in a unique way that is vintage Beecroft & Bull. Our recent venture into women’s wear in Virginia Beach has added a fresh new chapter to our history, now in its 54th year. This season we are proud to introduce Raoul—a little preppie, a little flirty, and like all our stores, pleasantly unexpected. In our magazine, we hope to give you some inspiration (and a dose of motivation) to come into the store and see the result of a lot of hard work. Check out our photo essays reflecting our direction for the season. Our team had a great time capturing these beautiful clothes at a high-energy session at photographer Daniel Springston’s Manhattan studio, as the behindthe-scenes shots at the bottom of this page show. The ultimate reward of our labors is the opportunity to be of service to you. Our teams in Virginia Beach, Richmond and Charlottesville look forward to helping you create, nourish or heighten your individual style.

Tangerine punch Easy piEcEs To understand the strong appeal of Luciano Barbera clothing, you must embrace, as the designer does, the concept of sprezzatura, basically a sort of ease, even nonchalance. “The most forceful statement is understatement,” Barbera explains. The elegant clothing that derives from this belief assures that its wearer is always noticed, without ever trying to be. Luciano Barbera, who at 72 is often called “the most elegant man in the world” by fashion cognoscenti, is a proponent of originality and the individual touch. His clothing line is also “Entirely Made in Italy,” as his label so proudly states, which is more uncommon than you would think. The new collection again reflects his unique interpretation of how a gentleman should dress. Think softly constructed jackets, subtly patterned shirts—and of course, sprezzatura.
This season, the color orange has juice. But the hue of the moment is not the in-your-face orange of your old school color, but rather an enticing citrus-y red that’s been dubbed “Tangerine Tango” by color house Pantone. Rare is the spring/ summer 2012 collection that doesn’t include the color, from a sportcoat (Etro) to dresses (Raoul) to dress shirts (Sartoria Partenopea) to ties (just about everybody). Traditionally, the color orange has signaled energy, activity and sociability in many cultures. This year, a splash of tangerine refreshes any look—and brightens your day as well.
Dude, where’d those duds come from? It’s impossible to imagine the wardrobe of a well-dressed man without certain classic pieces: an overcoat, khaki trousers, a sport shirt, a tweed jacket. Of course, each of these indispensable items has a history—a moment of inspired creation, followed by mass acceptance. Pinning down those moments is the work of the new book Icons of Men’s Style (Laurence King Publishing). Take, for example, the leather biker jacket, iconized by Marlon Brando in The Wild One. It was commissioned in 1928 by a Harley Davidson distributor who saw the need for a tough, zip-up leather jacket to protect motorcyclists. And consider the provenance of the trench coat, all but inseparable from one’s image of Humphrey Bogart circa Casablanca. That was first created for the British army officers who oversaw the trench warfare of World War I. Meanwhile, the loafer, which perhaps reached its style apotheosis when Michael Jackson moonwalked, owes its inspiration to the rough-hewn deerskin shoes of Native Americans. As for the modern necktie, that dates to just 1924—but its roots go back as far as Roman legionnaires of the 2nd century, who added color to their uniforms with scarf-like pieces of cloth. Even more interesting than their origins is the way these iconic pieces are reinterpreted and refreshed over the generations, by heroes, Hollywood stars and regular guys alike. s p r i n g • s u m m e r 2 0 12

Trunk Shows Just what is a trunk show? In the old days of fashion retailing, manufacturers’ representatives would visit stores with trunks filled with their latest creations. Today, we do most of our selection at designer’s showrooms, but the trunk show lives on. During these special events, you’ll have a chance to browse the entire line. Here’s what’s planned as of this printing: MARCH 14 TO 17

PETER MILLAR
What’s in a name? Who is Peter Millar? In the words of company founder Chris Knott, who took the name from an antique lawn bowling ball, the appellation conjures up a fellow who’s “worldly, sophisticated, honest and unflappable—a modern Renaissance man.” Peter Millar, the clothing line, made its name with luxurious cashmere sweaters and knit shirts priced below the market. Since then it has branched out into a full line of smart, colorful pants, shoes, neckwear and accessories. So finely attuned is its classic casual sensibility that the company was chosen as the official apparel provider for the U.S. golf team at the 2011 Presidents Cup. And exemplary design is also in the details, like unbreakable pearl shirt buttons, engraved leather pull tabs and labels for men’s boxers sewn on the outside of the leg. Check out the Peter Millar line at Beecroft & Bull to see what bright ideas it has for you.

Chained melody Vita Fede’s tagline is “Born in L.A., Made in Italy, Inspired by the World.” It might add “adored by L.A.” as well, for the jewelry and accessories line, which made its first splash five years ago with chain bracelets, is frequently flaunted by A-listers posing on the red carpet. Designer Cynthia Sakai describes the line’s style as “natural simplicity with a modern twist.” She uses raw materials and metals to create wearable art, from her signature leather-wrap bracelets adorned with crystals or chains to twisty belts made of leather, python skin and gold. common problem, you can use any of several ordinary products: hairspray, rubbing alcohol (test fabric first) or glycerine (a thick, colorless liquid available in drugstores). If you’re dealing with a nonwashable fabric, blot with a clean cloth to get out as much of the ink as possible. Then, get thee to a dry cleaner posthaste! For washables, put a few drops on the spot and keep dabbing with a cotton ball or clean cloth as the ink comes out. Next, gently rub a mild detergent and a drop or two of water on the spot; form suds and rinse. For particularly stubborn stains, make a paste of water and baking soda, and leave it on the spot for five minutes, then rub and rinse. I love my linen jacket, but how do I keep it looking sharp? Linen is made from the long stalk fibers of the flax plant. While admirably light and airy, said fibers are also stiff, leading to linen’s trademark wrinkles. Depending on how structured your linen jacket is, it may need to be dry-cleaned, or it may do fine with a gentle cycle or hand wash (check the label). Let it dry naturally, and—this is key—iron while it’s still damp. Finally, learn to love a certain amount of wrinkle in linen; it’s part of the fabric’s debonair charm. What’s the best way to care for my tuxedo? Contrary to popular belief, you should not have your tux dry-cleaned after every wearing; the heat and chemicals can shorten its life. A little air and a professional pressing is usually all that’s needed. Always store it on a proper hanger in a breathable garment bag. If you sweat through it, or wake up in the yard in it, then find a reputable dry cleaner.

New from Napoli Bold Styles By Isaia Impeccable tailoring and attention to detail are hallmarks of the Neapolitan sartorial tradition, a heritage the Isaia label proudly upholds. Not content merely to live up to past glories, though, Isaia also reinterprets tradition to make it relevant for what it calls the “New Gentlemen.” That would be the sort of men who are comfortable with admiring glances, for Isaia is known for its bold and confident styles. This season’s collection features “a new kind of blue,” drawing inspiration from the hues of the sea and sky so prominent in Naples. Fashioned in light cottons, open weaves and sprightly silks, the clothes sport lighthearted checks and bright plaids—often accented by splashes of sunny yellows. Catch Isaia’s modern spirit yourself at Beecroft & Bull.

Richmond roundup Bryan and Craig Beecroft recommend four fantastic things this spring in the city they love: Movie star eats. Shape-shifting actor Daniel Day-Lewis caused a stir in the Richmond area last fall while filming the title role in the forthcoming Lincoln. The eagerly awaited movie, directed by Steven Spielberg, is based on the bestselling Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns, and also features Joseph Gordon-Levitt as eldest son Robert Todd Lincoln, Sally Field as Mary Todd and Tommy Lee Jones as Republican leader Thaddeus Stevens. State tourism officials will make the most of the film’s December release, with tours highlighting places the 16th President visited in Virginia in 1864 and 1865—as well as tourism campaigns that mark places visited by Spielberg and Day-Lewis as they filmed in Richmond. In the meantime, follow in the culinary footsteps of the stellar cast: Various reports had them dining at The Hill Café in Church Hill (said to be a particular favorite of DDL), Comfort and Lemaire downtown, Arcadia Restaurant in Shockoe Bottom and Perly’s in the Fan District. Royal style. Hurry, hurry: two terrific shows at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (vmfa.state.va.us) will end soon. “Mummy: Secrets of the Tomb”, which closes March 11, features more than 100 objects from the Egyptian collection of the British Museum as it explores rituals of death and lavish burials in ancient Egypt. “Elvis at 21: Photographs by Alfred Wertheimer”, closing on March 18, showcases 56 fascinating black-and-white photos of the King of Rock 'n Roll from a time when he was on the brink of international superstardom. Kings of another short make a splendid showing at the museum from May 21 through August 19. That’s when “Maharaja: The Splendors of India’s Great Kings” brings together more than 200 magnificent ornaments and objects commissioned from artisans worldwide to celebrate the power of Indian kings and their courts. Al fresco dining. Take in the spring air while dining on the elegant, gardensurrounded terrace at Portico on River Road in Goochland. Local foodies were abuzz for months as chef/owner Paolo Randazzo, known for his work at Sensi in Shockoe Bottom, conducted an extensive renovation of the building formerly tenanted by Edible Garden. Portico opened last fall, and by all accounts was worth the wait, with gorgeous interior and landscape design matched by simple, delicious Italian fare. Set on a quiet, wooded road, it’s perfect for a romantic and relaxing outdoor dinner. Secure your table—well in advance—via opentable.com, or call (804) 784-4800. Cheer for Shaka. As March Madness howls along, here are six nonbasketball things you might not have known about Shaka Smart, Virginia Commonwealth University’s head men’s basketball coach, who set the sports world abuzz with his team’s magical run to the NCAA Final Four in 2011: 1. He was named after a famous Zulu warrior. 2. His wife Maya insists he still do one chore: taking out the garbage. 3. He graduated magna cum laude with a history degree from Kenyon College. 4. His favorite movie of all time is Scarface. 5. He is a legendary collector of quotations. One of his favorites is,“Be careful that you don’t run away from happiness.”

ThaT’s The spiriT. The eyes of scotch whisky aficionados are turned toward Lovington, just 30 minutes south of Charlottesville, where the Virginia Distillery Company (vadistillery.com) is breaking new ground. The 15,000-square foot facility is the first scottish-style single malt whiskey distillery in the U.s. and is offering the first-ever cask ownership program in North america. The distillery’s first homegrown product will be available by the end of this year; single malts will be available in three to four years. Meanwhile, the company is selling three different small-batch double malts—islay, speyside and highland—available only in Virginia, Maryland, Washington D.C. and Chicago. Bags, belts, sporting gear, wallets, accessories—the establishment has plenty of these, but not as you’ve seen them before. you may fancy a scarlet belt made from stingray, or even a belt fashioned from your own handcrafted needlepoint. Or perhaps you’d like to grab a clutch made of taurus noche leather and adorned with semi-precious gemstones, an ammunition belt made of elephant skin, or a collar for your favorite pup crafted in hornback crocodile and alligator skin. Specifically, a woman who is looking for high-quality clothes that are “multitasking, glamorous and sophisticated.” That translates into simple sheaths, clean-cut shorts, silky blouses, solid maxis, graphic color-block dresses and more, in both neutrals and a variety of sherbet colors—all unfailingly pretty.

To get a flavor for their forging style, visit the company’s showroom and gallery in Gordonsville, where you can purchase furniture, lighting, hardware and traditionally made wooden doors with iron strap hinges and hand-forged locks.
Southern comfort
How is it that designer Billy Reid knows just what a Southern gentleman likes to wear? Because he a Southern gentleman. He grew up in Amite, Louisiana, where his mother owned a women’s clothing boutique next to the only men’s store in town. His signature solid cuts, soft textured fabric and washed-out color scheme add up to pieces that work handsomely for both town and country lifestyles. This season, he lays out an elegant Southern garden party, with classic yet laidback pieces in tan linen, bonecolored cotton, pale seersucker and chambray, with occasional flourishes of smart patterns. “Southern gentility with a modern-vintage edge” is how he describes his aesthetic. If you can relate, see this season’s best at our store. 12

Music enhances a workout, as legions of earbud-wearing runners and stair-steppers can attest. But what kind is best? The fast kind, for one thing: Researchers found that uptempo songs motivate people to push themselves harder during exercise, despite the discomfort. The ideal range is between 120 and 140 beats-per-minute, about as fast as dance music, according to studies at Brunel University in England. Frequently mentioned examples: Green Day’s “American Idiot”, the Killers’ “Mr. Brightside”, Kanye West’s “Gold Digger” and “Gonna Fly Now,” the theme from the first Rocky movie. Then there’s the favorite of Olympic gold medalist Haile Gebrselassie: the techno song “Scatman” by Scatman John. Don’t feel like putting together your own playlist? ART & ANTIQUES Spring/Summer Preview Yes, fine weather will find you teeing off or dropping anchor in a tranquil bay—but you could also be tapping into your inner collector as you view some of life’s finer treasures. Here’s our list of what to watch for: HAVING A WINE TIME Should you be in Hong Kong on May 20 and 21, be sure to say “Cheers!” to Zachys Wine Auctions’ sale of fine aged Bordeaux and Burgundies (zachys.com/auctions). In California, corks start popping May 31 at the annual Napa Valley Wine Auction, one of the world’s best venues to sip your way through (through June 3; napavintners.com). FOR THE BIRDS Everyone knows about John James Audubon’s studies of birds, but few have seen his equally realistic illustrations of groundhogs, raccoons, and minks. The American Museum in Britain (near Bath) hosts a “Fur and Feather” exhibition of Audubon’s copperplate masterpieces (through July 1; americanmuseum.org). AMERICANS ABROAD We know American artists flourished in Paris, but it turns out there were plenty of Americans in Florence too. A landmark show, “Sargent and the American Impressionists,” at Florence’s Palazzo Strozzi brings together paintings by more than 30 American artists who worked in the glorious Italian city (through July 15; palazzostrozzi.org). PLACES TO PARK On August 18, start your engines for Gooding & Company’s annual auction of classic autos, part of Pebble Beach Automotive Week. Or if you dream of getting behind the wheel of a vintage Duesenberg, a newer Maybach, or, perhaps, a Mercer Raceabout (c. 1920), roll onto the 18th fairway at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance (August 19; pebblebeachconcours.net ). These and 200 other exquisite automobiles will be parked there. AFFAIRS OF THE ART No matter where you expect to be this season, art will be waiting to inspire you. In New York, for example, where New York’s Art and Antique Dealers League of America show will feature splendid objects to suit every connoisseur’s taste (May 2–6; artantiquedealersleague.org). If your taste runs toward the 20th century, consider the Los Angeles Modernism Show (May 4–6; dolphinfairs. com), noted for its mid-century Modern masterpieces. In Chicago, the Chicago Art Institute celebrates the late Pop Art master Roy Lichtenstein in a retrospective that represents a new, scholarly assessment of his career (May 16–September 3; artic.edu). If you miss the show in the Windy City, the works travel to Washington’s National Gallery of Art, then on to London’s Tate Modern. Every item at Masterpiece 2012 London (June 28–July 4; masterpiecefair. com) embodies the fair’s name—whether it’s a Dutch still life, Roman bust, Renaissance portrait, or a 16th-century map. Art Santa Fe (July 12–15; artsantafe.com) celebrates its 12th year with cutting-edge installations and emerging artists and dealers, attracting buyers and dealers from around the globe. Although you may know Aspen during ski season, summer is when you can slalom your way to some of the best in post-War and contemporary art at ArtAspen
See you in Virginia Beach The sun is shining, the sky and sea are blue, and great things are happening in Bryan and Craig’s home base. SWIM, SUN AND SURF FOR A GOOD CAUSE: JT’s Grommet Island Beach Park and Playground for EveryBODY in Virginia Beach (grommetisland.org) is a place where handicapped people can enjoy a day at the beach. Opened in May of last year, the fully accessible oceanfront park has 15,000 square feet of ramps and decking; a shaded play area; soft play sculptures; and special beach wheelchairs for those who want to cruise the sand. It’s the project of a group of local men who banded together to form the Virginia Gentleman Foundation after founding member Chris Thompson’s brother Josh was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease). As the park’s name implies, anyone can enjoy the facility—but what the site really needs is the continued generosity of citizens of Virginia Beach, who’ve also joined the fight against ALS. Donate via the park’s site at grommetisland.org, and check out the sponsorship opportunities for the 4th annual JT Walk & Beach Party, coming this October (jtwalk.org). SALUTE THE SEALS. Here in Virginia Beach, we co-exist quietly
with the U.S. Navy Sea, Air and Land Teams, better known as Navy SEALs, headquartered here. They are arguably the most intelligent and lethal fighting force on the planet, yet they remain humble and silent about their missions, and we respectfully don’t ask. Still, they are our friends and we celebrate the accomplishments and mourn the losses of the five teams based in Hampton Roads. In this, the 50th anniversary year of the founding of the Navy SEALs, Beecroft & Bull salutes these brave and intelligent warriors. You make us proud! THE SURF! While Virginia Beach is not legendary for its consistent surf, we
do have our share of good swells, and we are the home of a few legendary surfers and surf contests. Every summer, favorite stops for many pros are The Steel Pier Classic (vbsurfartexpo.com) and the ECSC East Coast Surfing Championships (surfecsc.com). canali In 1934, brothers Giovanni and Giacomo Canali established an artisan workshop in Triuggio, Brianza, with the aim of producing clothing of the highest quality. Today the company is still family-run and Italy-based—but it now has a presence in more than 100 countries around the world. A business success story, to be sure. But what does this history mean to the wearer of Canali’s luxury suits and outerwear? Quite a bit, it turns out. As ever, Canali garments begin with the finest natural fibers. Its tailors are among the most experienced in the world, their art evident in precise hand-finishing. At the same time, the company embraces innovation, such as sophisticated cutting systems that give each garment a perfect consistency. And Canali continues to set new standards for male elegance. This season, the Canali line is designed for the cosmopolitan world traveler. Whether in a subtle windowpane plaid or exuberant pattern, Canali clothes set the wearer apart in the best possible way.

Sam’s professional history was a colorful one, and for the past 14 years he was a proud and vital member of the Robert Talbott team. As President and CEO Bob Corliss put it, “his dedication and commitment have been an integral part of our success and growth. His spirit will forever be the foundation of Robert Talbott.” John Haller, also a longtime friend and business associate of Sam’s had this to say: “If there were a Hall of Fame, he’d be inducted on the first ballot. If hundreds of great men’s stores were polled on ‘who are the greatest?,’ Sam would be on top. I’ve never known one in my industry as respected, admired and befriended as Sam Jones…an instant legend.” The Jones legacy lives on as son Davis joined the firm in 2010. this golden-voiced, nattily attired rat packer took pains to appear effortless. By Timothy Kelley of movie sets and nightclub stages. and singer-actor-comedian dean Martin had it. he showed us all the merits of taking life easy, even when it isn’t. Born dino paul crocetti in 1917 to italian-immigrant parents in the tough steel town of steubenville, ohio, he dropped out of high school and fought in a dozen boxing matches as “kid crochet.” “i won all but eleven,” he quipped. switching to softer labor, Martin served as a croupier for blackjack games in a local gambling den. But he also liked to sing and bought all of Bing crosby’s records in order to emulate the great crooner. (later, his own singing would influence a young Mississippian named presley.) after moving from the gambling tables to the microphone at a columbus nightclub for his first paid musical gig, he borrowed operatic tenor nino Martini’s surname—then shortened it at a bandleader’s suggestion. sometimes Fate boils down to what nightclub you’re in and when. in new york’s clubs, Martin met two people who would change his life. one was singer Frank sinatra, whose place he took at an east side club called the riobamba. unfortunately, Martin rio-bombed, though Frankie became a lifelong pal. then there was a fellow performer at the glass hat, a hyperkinetic kid from new Jersey named Jerry lewis. the first Martin-lewis performance—at atlantic city’s 500 club—was reputedly such a disaster that the club’s boss told them to get new material or get lost. desperate, the baritone Martin and the whiny-voiced lewis tossed out their script and improvised. it worked. they went on to a decade as moviedom’s hottest comic duo. soon they were getting new material, all right—shopping for tuxedos that a top philadelphia tailor warned them would cost a then-princely $200 a pop. “With or without hangers?” Martin deadpanned. the singer’s good looks, funny bone and unflappable demeanor clicked with the public, and with women. (Martin was married three times and had seven kids.) after he split with lewis in 1956, he parlayed his talent and easygoing style into a smash nightclub, tV and film career of his own, while remaining impeccably attired. “on stage,” writes biographer Michael Freedland, “there was always a tuxedo that cost up to about $3,0000 a throw (and he had a dozen of them), a superbly pressed shirt, a bowtie and a red handkerchief in his breast pocket. that was his uniform.” in the early ’60s, Martin belonged to the famously dapper and fun-loving rat pack with sinatra, sammy davis Jr., Joey Bishop and peter lawford. in clubs, in films and in off hours this gang clowned and played pranks—once, for example, he stuffed sinatra’s dressing room with inflated balloons. “everybody loves somebody sometime,” as Martin’s signature song declared. But not everyone gets to enshrine his face and figure in the pantheon of fun. “dino” did, and— though we lost him in 1995—he goes right on inspiring us. true, no matter what care we take with our devil-may-care appearance, we won’t all have a voice like honeyed heaven and the ability to crack up a room without breaking a bead of sweat. Royal Watch Celebrating 40 years of its best-known timepiece, Audemars Piguet continues to innovate, reconfiguring classic lines and achieving new feats of horological virtuosity. By Caroline Goyette
On the run frOm CrOmwell’s troops in 1651, Charles II took shelter in the branches of a large oak tree. Dubbed the “royal Oak,” the tree saved the future king of england, scotland, and Ireland from certain death. the moniker took on an iconic role in British culture, giving its name to pubs, pottery designs and four British battleships. these ships—distinguished by their reinforced steel plates and octagonal cannonholes—in turn inspired a legendary watch, celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Audemar Piguet’s royal Oak, the first-ever luxury sports watch, defied the styles of the day when it debuted in 1972. Constructed of steel at a time when fine watches were
exclusively gold, with a daring octagonal (rather than circular or square) shape and distinctive case design with eight visible screws, the royal Oak upended the watchmaking world, sparking a trend for larger timepieces and daring others to match its marriage of ruggedness and haute horlogerie. four decades later, the royal Oak remains the company’s most famous and recognizable collection, with a host of high-profile clients. Indeed, at times the watch and its cohort, the beefy royal Oak Offshore, have threatened to overshadow AP’s other collections, including two classic lines named for its founders. Yet connoisseurs need no reminding of the quality, innovation and precision to be
The Audemars Piguet Millenary 4101 was the winner of the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie in 2011. Entirely assembled and decorated by hand, the watch reveals five levels of intricate design. It’s available in pink gold (shown) or steel.

found in each of the exclusive timepieces created by the company. The world’s oldest watch manufacturer still in the hands of its founding family, Audemars Piguet has deep roots in the horological history of the Swiss Vallée de Joux. Beginning in the mid-18th century, people of the region turned from their farming duties to spend long, snowy winters in the workshop, creating watch movements for Geneva-based companies. Their painstaking techniques were handed down from generation to generation, including an emphasis on hand-craftsmanship. Raised on these traditions, Jules-Louis Audemars and Edward-August Piguet were both accomplished watchmakers, and in 1875, they joined forces to start a venture of their own.
Beyond its commitment to watch-making innovation, the company has become increasingly devoted to philanthropic causes. Founded in 1992, the Audemars Piguet Foundation honors the pristine natural setting of the company’s home in the Vallée de Joux by supporting forestry conservation around the world and raising awareness among children about environmental issues. Each Audemars Piguet watch sold contributes to funding the foundation. In recent years, a wide range of sports figures and artists have partnered with the company, collaborating on charitable events, inspiring new designs, and showing through their own impressive pursuits just how versatile AP watches are. Indeed, you’ll find them on the wrists
Where the original Royal Oak was understated, the new edition reveals the skeletonized, complex movement at the heart of the timepiece. Devoting themselves to complicated timepieces, they launched Audemars Piguet & Cie in the Audemars family home, which served as headquarters and the company’s first workshop. (Today, the same building houses the company museum.) Audemars designed the watch movements, while Piguet handled the financial and commercial side of the business, a division of labor retained by the families to this day. The company grew swiftly, and by the turn of the century, Audemars Piguet had expanded its facility to accommodate up to 70 workers. Famous early visitors included Monet who, after seeking shelter at the factory during a snowstorm, repaid the kindness with a painting, now on display at the museum. In 1918, a second generation took charge, navigating the company through the new challenges of the 20th century. Two World Wars and the Wall Street crash of 1929 proved difficult tests, yet Audemars Piguet continued to innovate, introducing a popular line of jeweled ladies’ wristwatches, new complications for men, skeleton watches, and ultra-thin movements. By the 1960s, visionary leader George Golay ushered in a period of prosperity and heightened creativity. And because he increased distribution as well, Audemars Piguet soon enjoyed recognition the world over. Through it all, the company accumulated a striking number of world firsts, many of which marked major horological advances. Among the innovations: the first minute repeater wristwatch (1892); the smallest five-minute repeater movement of all time (1915); the The Millenary Minute Repeater jumping hour wristwatch (1921); the with AP Escapement has a titafirst self-winding ultra-thin perpetual nium case in the oval shape that calendar wristwatch (1978); and the is the signature of Audemars first wristwatch with a second time zone Piguet’s Millenary line. (1989). In addition to watch-making innovations, Audemars Piguet anticipated trends by decades or more. The tourbillon, created to counter the effects of gravity on a watch’s movements, has seen a recent renaissance in premium timepieces, yet Audemars Piguet was ahead of the curve: They introduced their ultra-thin tourbillon wristwatch back in 1986. 30

of such luminaries as basketball player LeBron James, ballerina Svetlana Zakharova, actress Michelle Yeoh and music legend Quincy Jones. In Audemars Piguet’s most recent collections, tradition and sophistication mingle with technological advances. The classic line named for founder Jules Audemars (another collection, Edward Piguet, honors his partner) features thoroughly reworked fundamentals. There’s the Jules Audemars Extra-Thin, which seems to float on the wrist with its slender, white gold case, narrow bezel, and understated dial. It owes its sleek design to its petite self-winding movement, one of the thinnest in the world at 2.45 mm. Ideal for travelers, the Jules Audemars Dual Time features an additional time zone that the wearer can set to his destination, allowing him to keep track of time abroad and at home. Available in three color schemes, the watch represents a horological marvel, with both time zone displays driven by a single, delicate movement. Meanwhile, the Millenary 4101, winner of the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie 2011, has sparked the attention of collectors for its finely crafted movement, built to be visible (and admired) from the face of the watch. And then there’s the birthday boy—the much-fêted Royal Oak. In honor of the watch’s anniversary, Audemars Piguet is unveiling a limited-edition, openworked, extra-thin version of the watch. Where the original was understated, its internal workings encased in steel, the new, platinum edition throws back the curtain, revealing the skeletonized, complex movement at the heart of the timepiece. Available in a limited series of 40, this Royal Oak hits an appropriately bold note for a company that has long mastered two opposing creative impulses: the discipline and meticulousness necessary to execute timepieces of the highest quality, and the daring spirit to unleash them on the world.

Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic wears the Royal Oak Day & Date in stainless steel. Each Audemars Piguet watch requires hours of painstaking handwork at the company’s factory in Le Brassus in the Vallée de Joux. External watch components, like the Jules Audemars platinum case shown here, undergo several surface treatments.

flight of fancy Discover the surprising power of motorless flight.
IMAGINE THE SOAR WITHOUT THE ROAR: YOU’RE SAILING SERENELY OVER the scenic countryside, no more reliant on aviation fuel than the eagle or the condor—in fact, you’re borrowing some of their aeronautical secrets. That’s what it’s like to fly in a glider, a motorless airplane sometimes called a “sailplane”—and the origins of this pastime date well before the Wright Brothers. Meet an aficionado and you’ll likely hear learned talk about the lift-to-drag ratio and the dihedral. But that gleam in the eye is your tipoff: He’s talking about a thrill. To get aloft, gliders need to be either towed by a powered aircraft or launched with a winch-and-cable system run by a stationary engine. Apprentice pilots, says the Soaring Society of America, “learn that a sailplane is a docile yet responsive machine that answers to gentle, coordinated pressure on its controls.” The docile but daring craft you see here, for example, is the Discus-2c, a recent offering from Schempp-Hirth, the distinguished 77-year-old German sailplane manufacturer. It stands only a little over 4 feet tall, but it’s 21 feet long, boasts a 59-foot wingspan (there are also 49-foot versions) and can travel at a more than stately 160 mph. To ply the skies in this airborne beauty you’ll need a glider’s pilot license (experts suggest 30 or 35 flights as a passenger before you “solo”—unless you’re a trained motor-aircraft pilot, in which case 10 may suffice) and roughly $100 per hour for a rental fee. You’ll also need supplementary oxygen, because sailplanes generally don’t have pressurized cockpits. But that seems entirely fitting. Wouldn’t a view like this take your breath away?
This graceful Schempp-Hirth Discus-2c (price, fully loaded: about $150,000) hasn’t strayed far from home—yet. It is shown above the majestic Castle Teck, a late 19th-century reconstruction of a famous ducal edifice that was destroyed in 1525. The company’s factory is in nearby Kirchheim unter Teck, about 15 miles from Stuttgart.

KIWI LINKS
Set amid New Zealand’s rugged landscape, Cape Kidnappers is a thrill ride of a course that straddles chalk cliffs and offers stunning views of Hawke’s Bay. By Paul Rogers
THERE WAS A TIME, NOT LONG AGO, WHEN THE MOST
common gag gifts for golfers were calendars illustrated with fantasy golf holes: a tee box perched on the roof of a skyscraper and a green set atop a barge passing in the harbor below or a sliver of fairway in the thick of a redwood forest. Well, those whimsical renderings of imaginary holes don’t seem so outlandish anymore. That’s because the golf course development boom of the 1990s and early 2000s produced a number of layouts—nestled in desert canyons, strung along ski slopes—that appeared to defy the possible. None, though, stretches the imagination more than Cape Kidnappers, an eye-stopper of a course whose holes unfurl over giant claws of land on the North Island of New

Zealand in the late ’70s while he was taking a break from Wall Street to write a novel. Nothing came of his literary foray—back in New York two years later, Robertson founded Tiger Management Corp., which would become at one time the world’s largest hedge fund. But the couple remained enamored of this unspoiled and far-off land. In its early years, Cape Kidnappers had no lodging on site for golfers, a deficiency the Robertsons addressed by building The Farm at Cape Kidnappers, an elegantly rustic lodge and spa. The accommodations include four suites adjoining the main lodge, 18 additional suites in a series of wellsituated outbuildings, and a private owner’s cottage. As exhilarating as it is to tee off at Cape Kidnappers, there is far more to do than play golf. The property is home to the world’s largest mainland colony of gannets, the needle-billed, pointed-winged seabirds that swoop and dive at great speeds for their prey; guests can take guided tours of the habitat. The resort also offers a “Kiwi Walk,” on which to explore the property with an on-site naturalist to track and interact with the endangered northern brown kiwi. The region that encompasses Cape Kidnappers, Hawke’s Bay, has made a name for itself in wine-producing circles, thanks to its ample sunshine and long, cool growing season. Guests of the resort can tour the vineyards on bicycle, hopping from cellar to cellar to sample the local Chardonnay, Syrah and blends of Cabernet and Merlot.
To be sure, though, golf remains the first and foremost reason to plan a journey to Cape Kidnappers. Doak’s courses are known for being playable rather than penal, and this one, despite the wild terrain and the fierce, shifting breezes off the ocean, hews to that theme. The fairways provide plenty of room to accommodate shots pushed and pulled by the wind. Naturally, the most dramatic holes at Cape Kidnappers are those that play out to the sea. Number 12, known as “Infinity,” is a par-4 of 460 yards that bends right off the tee and then left into a green that’s perched at the end of a narrow ridge, silhouetted by the bay. Peril lurks along the entire left side. Cape Kidnappers had its coming-out party by hosting the Kiwi Challenge, an exhibition of rising Tour stars held in 2008 and 2009. The players couldn’t get over the beauty of the course—or the buffeting winds. Sean O’Hair, the 2009 runner-up, marveled at how the drives the pros hit into wind on the par-5 15th went no more than 230 or 240 yards. Those struck with the wind on the following hole traveled as far as 400 yards, prompting O’Hair to say, “Basically, you just need to get your driver or whatever club airborne and it’s going to go for miles.” Hunter Mahan, who won the 2008 event, had high praise for Cape Kidnappers. “On almost every shot, you are looking straight out into the ocean,” he said. “It’s a different world.” One that’s real, though, not merely imagined. hail to the
vizsla Folks have been fans of the noble vizsla (vizh-la), also known as the Hungarian pointer, since the Middle Ages. A favorite of barons and warlords, the vizsla itself has the mien of an aristocrat with its high cheekbones, sturdy
bearing and golden coat. But it also has another welcome attribute: being an exceptionally hard worker, and that work includes hunting, tracking, pointing and retrieving. Bred to be a gun dog, the vizsla is known to its fond owners as the “Velcro dog” because of its determination to stick close by its master. And that master had better have a lot of energy, because vizlas certainly do. They need a long walk (think six miles) or lots of running time every day, and have been known to jump a six-foot fence. If you’re a hiker, runner or swimmer, a vizsla will be your faithful partner in fitness—and an affectionate, intelligent companion when day is done. Qualities that, for a dog lover, are very much on point.

high chappellet Pritchard hill, the chappellet family’s high-altitude napa vineyard, consistently produces standout cabernet sauvignon. By Ted Loos To look aT iT from afar, PriTchard hill isn’T
that much different than any other bit of spectacular mountaintop napa scenery—rocky, dun-colored and studded with live oaks. But donn and molly chappellet thought it had the potential to yield great Bordeauxstyle wines when they picked it in the late 1960s as the home for chappellet Vineyard & Winery. That’s because andre Tchelistcheff, the famous winemaker and consultant, had recommended high-altitude grape growing to donn as a way to get concentration and rich tannins into red wines. Pritchard hill seemed the right place to experiment. “dad had to give up the bigger yield of loweraltitude vineyards,” says Jon-mark chappellet, one of the couple’s two sons, who now manages the winery, “but to him it made sense.” (Tchelistcheff had advised keeping production small to maintain quality.) “mountain grapes were not common knowledge at the time in napa. You have to remember, there were only 30 wineries in the valley back then; now there are 400.” The experiment was an unqualified success, and now chappellet has been in the forefront of napa wine for more than 40 years. The critic hugh Johnson put it this way: “chappellet is wine lovers’s wine: eloquent to the sentient.” in 2012 the winery plays official host to the napa Valley Wine auction, an honor because it 56

is the area’s number one event of the year. The operation is still family-run: Jon-Mark’s brother, Cyril, handles sales and marketing, and his sister, Carissa, the legal affairs. Donn and Molly are officially retired, although Molly continues to publish cookbooks and operate as a Napa lifestyle guru. “We’ve gravitated toward certain parts of the business and specialized,” notes Jon-Mark. Chappellet now makes four wines from its 100 acres of certified-organic vineyards—a Chardonnay and three reds, most famously its flagship high-end entry, Pritchard Hill Estate Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, which is made from a single vineyard (the estate’s original one). That is the wine that reflects the terroir of the winery’s home base. The particularities of the soil and the vineyard’s exposure to the sun mean that the organically farmed grapes could make for super-dense and off-putting wine; yet expert winemaker Philip Corallo-Titus has learned to manage the natural tannins to create something silky and sophisticated. Pritchard Hill is technically a blend, since the Cabernet is mixed with smaller amounts of Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec, depending on the vintage. That recipe is the one made famous by red Bordeaux, and the Chappellets have always had the great chateaux of that region as their guiding stars. The vintages vary, but not by too much—the signature style of ripe fruit and a firm body comes through year after year. “We want to keep the blend as consistent as possible,” says Jon-Mark. For more than 40 years, this family winery has been making good on that promise. 58

In the indulgent spirit of its Newport neighbors, a hotel embraces bold 21st-century style.
LET’S SAY YOU’RE A GILDED-AGE INDUSTRIAL magnate, come back to life in 2012. Nowhere will you feel more at home than in Newport, Rhode Island, your affluent contemporaries’ playground with its majestic old “cottages” (read: mansions). But you’re no fool. Once you’ve got your bearings, you’re apt to lay your head down—and moor your yacht—at a 21st-century hotel and marina on Thames Street called Forty 1° North. Opened in August 2010, this 28-room gem gives the classic Newport sensibility up-to-the-minute expression. Designed by Philadelphia-based DAS Architects, its shingled exterior, gabled roof and porches honor the town’s 19th-century architecture. The interior is modern but grand, with artfully deployed marble, onyx and platinum

glass tile, a three-story capiz chandelier and a 9-foot-by-9-foot abalone shell sculpture in the lobby. French doors and “real” windows throughout the building allow fresh Newport breezes in. This is in keeping with the hotel’s eco-friendly ethos, which includes floor-to-ceiling windows to reduce the need for artificial light during the day; low-flow showerheads; and, instead of a morning newspaper, an iPad loaded with the digital version. Many guest rooms boast balconies and harbor views, and each has a gas fireplace. Forty 1° North offers two notable restaurants. There’s the family-friendly Christie’s, with a global tapas menu and a burger The Boston Globe calls one of New England’s 10 best. Meanwhile, The Grill is a dockside delight with succulent steaks, seafood and a raw bar to text home about. For cocktails, the Library, the Oval Bar, plus a private wine room, add to creature comforts. Guests are steps away from Newport’s Thames Street shops and restaurants and the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Also nearby are the century-old Newport Art Museum and St. Mary’s Church, where John and Jackie Kennedy tied the knot. And if you time it right, your Newport stay may include one of the town’s three famous summer festivals—jazz, folk music and international film. Or take an any-old-day stroll on the 3.5-mile Cliff Walk, a shoreline walkway that snakes past those comfortable cottages, relics of a day when opulent pads came without iPads.
Aesthetic surprises await when you step inside Forty 1° North. The classic Newport style is recalled by the marina-facing exterior (opposite, top). Inside, a modern, playful spirit prevails—thus the long, candle-topped banquet table in the Gallery (opposite) and the giant chess set nearby (below). Sicis water-glass mosaic tiles adorn a soothing bathroom (right), while a gabled bedroom (above) offers an inviting harbor view.

Next time the kids get your goat, think of them as your key to longevity. Researchers led by a Stanford University urologist, drawing on surveys over more than a decade by 135,000 men, have found that childless men had a 17 percent higher risk of dying from heart disease than did fathers. (They speculate that the medical link may be due to infertility rather than the choice not to procreate.)
Active but big is O.K. Working out, but can’t seem to trim that waistline? Don’t worry—you’re still cheating the Grim Reaper. In a study of more than 14,000 men reported in the journal Circulation, each increment of increased fitness over a six-year period was linked to a 19 percent reduction in the risk of death from heart disease or stroke, no matter how chubby the subjects remained. Says the study’s author: “This is good news for people who are physically active but can’t seem to lose weight.”

Just a few years ago style writers penned obits for the tie clip as an ill-favored symbol of the “organization man.” But now, thanks to the TV show Mad Men and its imitators, that man has made a comeback— whether he’s ironic or simply iconic. Gentlemen shaking hands over the dinner table need no longer fear their cravats doing a slalom in the Jell-O—the tie clip (alias bar, alias clasp) is in vogue again.

The secret to looking younger
Bless those Scots. A study from the Royal Edinburgh Hospital finds that people who have sex three to four times weekly look 10 to 12 years younger than they are. Researchers’ method? Showing photos of 3,500 subjects “between 30 and 101” to a panel of judges and asking how old each appeared. The theory is that lovemaking triggers the release of endorphins and oxytocin, hormones that increase the flow of nutrients to muscles and tissues to keep skin firm. (Yes, that’s age 30 to 101.)
Whiskers are abloom once more, but that doesn’t mean it’s smart to be scraggly. Grooming experts advise trimming a beard or mustache regularly—when it’s dry, not wet. (Wet hair is longer; you may over-trim.) Beecroft & Bull has all you need to guard against the nicks, bumps and redness that can result from shaving. As for your facial-hair style, that depends on the effect you’re going for. In a British study on the topic, women rated heavy beards most manly, light beards most dominant and light stubble most attractive.
