“Everything that hangs in the theater hangs from these lines,” says Assistant Professor of Theater and Scenic Designer James Gross. That includes curtains, lights, even flying actors (hence the term “fly lines”) and—in the College’s production of Moliere’s The Miser— a massive arch. “The levers on the lines are brakes. Each line is labeled with what’s on that specific line for that particular show.”

Helpful Hardware: “The number one piece of hardware for set designers is the drywall screw. We go through pounds per show. “There’s a mantra for scenery: ‘lightweight and portable.’ Whether that’s to move across a set, or from stage to stage.”
