Student of the Month Grace Todd Wichita Trinity Grace Todd was a standout gymnast, who attended Wichita Trinity, before a serious back injury cut her career short. Todd suffered the injury as a sophomore, but tried to return as a junior. In fact, she took first at regionals in the vault. Still though, her back was deemed too fragile for competition.

Aside from participating in gymnastics, Todd was a part of the National Honor Society at Trinity. She also went on an art history trip to Italy and was in a small group that helped mentor underclassmen. Next year, Todd will be attending the University of Kansas where she plans to be a pre-med major. Todd was planning on participating in track and field and powerlifting before COVID-19 shut down schools.

PEDIATRIC THERAPY: W SITTING

Amanda Noll, PT, DPT, CSCS

One of the most common injuries we hear about in sports is often a diagnosis that athletes, parents, and coaches dread hearing: the ACL tear. This is because ACL tears are season ending, especially with the most current research advocating for longer recovery times as it has been shown that the ACL repair may not be fully healed for 1-2 years after surgery. But before we get too far into recovery and prevention, we need to answer the question, “What is an ACL tear and why is the ACL so important?” ACL stands for Anterior Cruciate Ligament and is one of the main stabilizing ligaments in the knee. It prevents the tibia (shin bone) from coming too far forward from the femur (thigh bone), keeping the knee stable and allowing you to run, cut, and jump without your knee “giving out.” So, how do we prevent ACL tears? The best way to prevent an ACL tear is to increase and maintain good strength throughout your core and legs, especially in the hips. Along with maintaining good strength, it is extremely important to have good jumping and landing mechanics. Many times, improper landing technique puts the knee in a very vulnerable position, increasing your risk for a tear. This is especially prominent in teenage girls. So learning and practicing proper jumping and landing will help decrease your risk. Another great way to decrease your risk of an ACL tear is to play multiple sports a year and not specialize in one sport before the age of 18. Playing multiple sports allows your body to learn to move and react to different stimuli and therefore your body will become stronger and more equipped to handle the demands of different sports, as well as preventing overuse injuries, which furthers your risk for ACL tears. However, even the best and strongest athletes will get ACL tears despite how well they train. Sometimes, these injuries are inevitable, especially with contact sports where movements can be unpredictable. So, if you do end up suffering and ACL tear, know that recovery to the point where you are as good (or better) than before is very possible with the right physical therapy. A well trained Physical Therapist will guide you through each step of the 9-12 month recovery period and help you get back in the game, just as good or better than before. If you happen to suffer and ACL tear, or want to get set up with an ACL tear prevention strengthening program, know that you will be in good hands at any of our Advanced Physical Therapy locations. It was all about the seniors in the May issue as VYPE Magazine paid tribute to many future graduates with “Senior Shout-Outs.” Student-athletes like Trevor Whiteman of Udall, Brice Helton of Augusta, Faith Paramore of Haven, Greysin Wirths of Wichita North and many more were honored as their high school careers came to an early close. It was certainly a memorable end to a school year.

WHAT IF?

Spring Sports 2020‌ What If? Thursday, March 11th, Black Thursday in the VYPE Nation - the final day of high school athletic competition for the 2019-20 year thanks to the Coronavirus. There are so many fantastic success stories that were left untold. As part of the VYPE YearEnd review, our editorial folks decided to have some fun and make predictions on what might have been for some of our VYPE Nation athletes!

The only two City League teams to place at the 6A Swimming Tournament last season were East and West. The main swimmers from those teams were in the 100 and 200-

yard freestyle events, where Maci Mccullough from West took second in the 100, while winning the 200. East’s Astrid Dirkzwager took first in the 100 and her sister Ariana Dirkzwager took second to Mccullough in the 200.

Prediction: Astrid Dirkzwager, who will be swimming at Georgia Tech next year, not only defended her title in the 100, but also won by more than three seconds over Mccullough.

Additionally, Dirkzwager won the 100-yard backstroke to give her five state championships.

The 200-yard freestyle event was an exciting one as it came down to a few tenths of a second.

Astrid Dirkzwager But Mccullough was able to also defend her title, narrowly winning the 200-yard freestyle event by three-tenths of a second of Arian Dirkzwager.

Johnson WWW.NCKTC.EDU scored 24 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the victory. In the finals, the Trojans took on No. 2 seed BasehorLinwood, which handily defeated Hays in the semifinals. WHAT IF?

4A Softball....What if? Repeating as state champion is not exactly something new for the Augusta softball program, as the Orioles won in 2014 and 2015.

So with so much talent returning in 2020, Augusta was in position to go back-to-back as 4A champions.

The Orioles allowed only two earned runs in the 2019 tournament, but that was with league MVP Gracie Johnston

Allie Ebbenkamp

on the mound, who is now pitching at Missouri State.

But the cupboard was far from bare for Augusta, who returned four first team allleague players and second team pitcher Morgan Pennycuff was primed to take over for Johnston.

Prediction: Just like the year before, Andale/Garden Plain would prove to be the Orioles’ biggest threat to a title. The Indians returned nearly everyone from the state runner-up team in 2019.

The two teams split their regular season matchup and both went into the state tournament with a record of 21-1.

Morgan Pennycuff Augusta was the No. 1 seed, while Andale was the No. 2 seed and the two teams cruised to the finals. Behind Pennycuff, who emerged as one of the best pitchers in the area, the Indians managed just two hits and Allie Ebbenkamp drove in the only run of the game as Augusta defeated Andale/Garden Plain 1-0 to win its second consecutive title.

YEAR-END REVIEW 5A Soccer.....What If? The Bishop Carroll girls soccer team entered the 5A semifinals as the No. 1 seed with a record of 18-1. But the Eagles fell to St. Thomas Aquinas 2-0 and due to weather were not able to play in the consolation game.

Carroll returned four first team Taylor Brockover all-league (Taryn Lubbers, Khloe Schuckman, Taylor Bockover and Madi Wingler) and two second team all-league players (Anna Lasak and Libby Brooks) in 2020. The Eagles actually returned nine key members from the 2019 team. Prediction: Class 5A girls soccer in the Wichita-area is full of talent. But the Eagles proved to be too much for all of those teams.

Carroll defeated Hays in the regional final, before taking down Maize in the state quarterfinals to again advance to the state semifinals. With a record of 17-1, Carroll faced off against Blue Valley Southwest in the semifinals and won 2-0 to set up a rematch with St. Thomas Aquinas in the finals. It took overtime, but the Eagles defeated the Saints 1-0 on a Schuckman goal for the school’s first state championship.

WHAT IF?

6A Baseball....What if? The Campus baseball team was in an envious spot heading into the 2020 season.

The Colts returned five starters and eight players from the 2019 state tournament championship team, two of which were first team all-league pitchers in Jackson Hartley and Tanner Leslie.

Jackson Hartley

Having just one dominant pitcher at the high school level is advantageous, but having two makes a team nearly unbeatable if they have offense to support it.

Campus had just that as both Hartley and Leslie played in the field when not on the mound. Add in Austin Warkins, T.J. Waits, Tyler Gates and Diego Escamilla and the Colts had everything. Prediction: It was déjà vu for Campus at the 6A Tournament, as they defeated two teams they

Tanner Leslie defeated in the 2019 tournament. The Colts took care of Derby 6-2 in the semifinals before taking on Lawrence-Free State again in the finals. Campus went back-to-back as they defeated the Firebirds 4-0 in the finals.

In the Colts’ five postseason games, their pitching staff allowed only four earned runs.

5A Basketball....What if? Over the past 12 seasons, the Andover Central and McPherson girls basketball teams have combined to win five state championships.

:: VYPEKS.COM

Pyle, who poured in a game-high 20 points, scored 10 of them in the fourth quarter as the Bullpups defeated Andover Central 54-46 to earn their 10th state championship.

JUNE 2020

Andover Central held a slim 25-23 lead at halftime, but much like its game with Aquinas, McPherson went on a run in the third quarter to lead after three, 39-35.

::

The championship game lived up to all expectations.

Grace Pyle

SOUTH CENTRAL KANSAS

McPherson and Aquinas exchanged blows all game in a back and forth affair. The Saints led at halftime 2118, the Bullpups outscored Aquinas 14-7 in the third quarter and held on for a 42-38 win. Grace Pyle led the Bullpups in scoring with 14 points.

::

The Jaguars defeated DeSoto 61-52 in the 5A quarterfinals, while the Bullpups took down Basehor-Linwood 59-44.

Prediction: The Jaguars were surprisingly dominant against a Topeka Seamen team that had won 20 games. Andover Central jumped out to a 16-6 first quarter lead and never looked back, winning 59-43. Sophomore Brittany Hers haw led the Jaguars with 18 points and 12 rebounds.

VYPE KANSAS

And the two tradition-rich programs were certainly headed for a title game tilt this season.

Up next for Andover Central in the semifinals was Topeka Seaman, while McPherson got fellow 5A power, St. Thomas Aquinas.

6A Basketball....What if? At no time in the school’s history has Campus been crowned state champion in boys basketball.

But the 2019-2020 was much different than any other season the Colts had played.

After defeating Manhattan 66-50 in the 6A quarterfinals, the path to a state title for the Colts was Blue Valley North in the semifinals then likely perennial power Blue Valley Northwest in the finals.

Prediction: Campus had little trouble with Blue Valley North in the semifinals, winning 68-50, which set up the much-anticipated matchup in the finals with Blue Valley Northwest. While the Huskies were certainly a worthy opponent in the finals, the Colts simply wore them down in a 65-56 victory. Chapman scored

21 points for Campus, who outscored Blue Valley Northwest 23-11 in the third quarter. Campus concluded a perfect season and a spot in Kansas’s high school basketball history.

3A Basketball..... What If?

Once Haven was upset in the quarterfinals of the 3A Tournament by St. Mary’s, it seemed like the winner of the Wichita Collegiate-Beloit semifinal matchup would have the inside track to winning a state championship. The Spartans defeated Colby 58-46 in the quarterfinals, but the Trojans would possess a much greater threat.

Prediction: After trailing by as many as 12 in the first half, Collegiate opened the second half on a 13-4 run to tie the score at 41 heading into the fourth quarter. Grady Dick scored nine points in the fourth quarter, as Collegiate defeated Beloit 57-50 to earn a spot in the title game. While No. 8 seed St. Mary’s had been on an incredible run, the Bears were also the No. 6 seed in sub-state, the Spartans simply had too much firepower. Maize South Trap Shooting team

Now in its third year, Maize South is one of the state’s budding trap-shooting teams. Under first-year coach Chris Morrison, who credits a group of team dads who help coach as well, Maize South has 25 Mavericks out for the team. By the spring, which is the main season for Kansas high school trap shooting, they could have 40 out. Morrison has extensive outdoors background, as he’s an avid hunter and fisherman. The Mavericks use the Ark Valley Gun Club for practice and competition.

WHAT IF?

4A Basketball....What if? Earlier in the season, Augusta defeated Rose Hill on a three-pointer at the buzzer, so a second matchup in the semifinals of the 4A Tournament was going to be another thriller. The Rockets came into the state tournament on a roll, having won at Andale at the end of the regular season and then upsetting Clearwater in the sub-state finals.

That momentum carried over at the state tournament, as Rose Hill rallied from a double-digit deficit to defeat top-seeded Parsons in the quarterfinals.

The Orioles were no strangers to playing big games at the state tournament, as they made it to the championship game last year. They defeated Ottawa in the quarterfinals. Prediction: No team had a lead greater than four points throughout the entire game, with the Orioles leading the Rockets 26-24 at halftime. The score was tied at 39 heading into the fourth quarter. This time around, the Rockets scored last, as two free throws by Koby Campbell gave Rose Hill a

Koby Campbell 54-52 victory.

While the Rockets fell to Bishop Miege in the finals, it was still an impressive run to end the season.

4A Golf....What if?

26

The Wellington golf program took second at the 2019 4A Tournament in Dodge City and with its entire team coming back, the Crusaders were the undoubted favorite to win the 2020 tournament.

State golf was heading to a new two-day format in 2020, which would favor the better teams because it takes out the possibility of one team getting hot on one day. Junior Blake Saffell and sophomore Deitrick Gill both placed in the top 15 at last season’s tournament.

Prediction: After shooting 77 and finishing fifth in 2019, Saffell shot a two-day total of 149 (73-

Blake Saffell 76), which crowned him state champion. Gill finished fifth with a score of 158 (80-78).

Led by Saffell and Gill’s scores, Wellington took home the 4A team crown by shooting a 632 (314318). It was the Crusader’s 11th state championship and first time winning since 1983.
