Basketball season brings out the crowds in McCurtain County. Take a closer look at Broken Bow, Idabel and others in this team breakdown.

Journey Nunnelee - McAlester Ambitious – Motivated – Focused…all traits of successful people in achieving their goals in life. These words and others can be used to describe the impact that Journey Nunnelee is making in the lives of others she meets.

Balancing a schedule that begins with 6am band practice through a busy school day including cheer practices until 6pm, Nunnelee accepts the demands of time management with a purpose. “It’s rewarding and tiring simultaneously,” admits Nunnelee. “It goes back to character and being prepared mentally to be ready for opportunities of leadership and service.” With her never fading smile and bubbly personality, Nunnelee credits her mom as the biggest influence for success

“Character is who you are inside, it’s the standard you live by,” said Nunnelee, a senior at McAlester High School. “Your true character is like the iceberg underneath the water. It’s a lot bigger than just who you think you are.” Always on the go looking for opportunities of service, Nunnelee is drum major of the high school band, a mentor tutoring students at school, captain of the Buffaloes cheer squad and a volunteer in the community. “Journey is a person that cares about everything and everyone around her,” said Krista Curley, cheer coach at McAlester High School. “She’s constantly looking for someone in need that she can help. Not only did she make our squad better as a whole enabling us to qualify for state, but Journey’s initiative resulted in this year’s team adopting a family in McAlester to provide food and gifts for them.” In addition to being drum major of the marching band organizing the whole production of the competition performance, the talented musician also earned her spot with the wind ensemble through her determination. “Character comes from what you do,” notes David Steidley, director of bands at McAlester, “by example not just talk. Journey lives by example whether it’s getting one on one with rides to band practice or helping students with their music. Journey delivers proof that hard work results in success.”

“My mom lives by example,” Nunnelee smiled. “She (Jodi Nunnelee) constantly challenged and encouraged me to step out and take an opportunity to help others.” With a purpose of meeting the needs of kids in McAlester’s elementary schools, Nunnelee organized a coat drive that has resulted in a community wide spirit of service. “I get cold if I don’t have a jacket when temperatures drop,” said Nunnelee. “I started thinking about all the kids I’d see everyday in town that didn’t have coats. So I used all my contacts on social media asking for donations. I made a video for my church to promote the idea asking for their support and then a couple of McAlester businesses asked me if they could help out as well. And success began to grow. “Then I’d go pick them up, organize them by girl or boy coats and then take them to the elementary schools in McAlester. It was humbling to me to think that my small actions could result in such a widespread community success to help out kids in McAlester that don’t know me or where the coats are coming from…but now they can go to school and be warm.” Already accepted to attend the University of Oklahoma, the 2015 senior at McAlester High School dreams of leaving a legacy as an inspiration for others. “I hope my efforts create something positive not because of what I did but the ways I was able to help others,” said Nunnelee, “that my actions were intentional to help others and encourage people I meet to become examples for others to follow.” With purpose and passion, Journey Nunnelee expects the best and holds herself accountable to a higher standard of success. And through her efforts continues to make life better for everyone she meets.

Davis Goes Back-to-Back

Blake Summers The Davis Wolves defeated the Nowata Ironmen to win back-toback state titles for the first time in team history. Davis quarterback Blake Summers enjoyed an incredible run in 2014, starting with his selection to the VYPE Top 100. “It was an honor to be selected to the VYPE Top 100. It shows how hard we work as a team and to be included in this group is a great honor, said Summers. Summers was named as a finalist for Mr. Football in early December. The senior quarterback accounted for more than 2,100-yards on the ground and 38 touchdowns. In the championship game against Nowata, Summers rushed 30 times for 185-yards helping the team surpass the 300-yard mark against the Ironmen. In the early moments of the game

it was Nowata striking first with a 37-yard touchdown run from quarterback Wyatt Steigerwald. The Ironmen would not find the endzone again until the fourth quarter when Steigerwald found Scott Pruett open downfield for a 47-yard touchdown pass. An estimated crowd of 5,000 fans watched as the title game offered up drama on every possession including a goalline fumble by Daivs, a hurdling penalty and an interception by Davis safety Trever Merrell to seal the victory for the Wolves. JT Maynard scored for Davis on a 2-yard pass from Summers in the second quarter. Then Davis running back Trever Merrell added a 12-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to break the 7-7 tie. In the fourth, Hunter Karlik would put Davis up for good with a 9-yard touchdown run, sealing in the 20-13 win.

McAlester Girls and Boys Basketball Set To Rebound in 2015 Photos by Mark Emmons Photography

The bounce of the basketball inside Bob Brumley gymnasium will be followed by the roar of cheers from McAlester fans as the Buffaloes expectations for success continue to rise for the girls and boys squads. The Lady Buffs lineup will again be young with two returning starters as head coach April Burns begins her fourth season at the helm of the McAlester program. With a move to a guard oriented offense this season, Burns will look to a senior trio with three years of varsity experience to take this year’s squad back to the winner’s circle. Topping this year’s lineup is 5-10 forward Shattee Robinson (5.0ppg/4.3reb), whose quickness presents a plus inside for the Lady Buffs. “Because of her athleticism, Shattee is capable of taking over a game inside,” notes Burns. “With our primary guard lineup, we’ll look to her for points and rebounds.” Adding senior level experience will be 5-7 guard Katelynn Creekmore and 5-3 guard Vhitney Garner, who returns from a late season injury during softball. Attack will be the mindset of 5-3 sophomore guard Taylor Compton (5.1ppg/1.8asst), who draws praise from the Lady Buffs mentor. “Taylor’s only sport is basketball,” said Burns,

“and she has the ability to score from the perimeter as well as off the dribble.” The youthful talent of the Lady Buffs is also evident in the skills of 5-8 freshman Delaney Nix. “When our combo of Taylor and Delaney clicks, our offense can be successful,” said Burns. “Ball movement and scoring from the outside opens things for Shattee in the lane.” Coach Burns will look for added productivity on both ends of the court as juniors Megan Fassino, Megan McAlester and Bri Talbot will mix with sophomores Brynn Vaughn, Taylor Gunion and freshman Taryn Howard to provide needed depth. “I’m looking for an exciting year,” said Burns noting a special bond within her team. “The combination of the younger players with our upperclassmen allows us to play an up-tempo style of basketball on both ends of the court. The team quickness and overall defensive abilities gives us a chance every time we take the court.” Shatee Robinson 5-10 F Sr. Katelynn Creekmore 5-7 G Sr. Vhitney Garner 5-3 G Sr. Megan Fassino 6-0 C Jr. Megan McAlester 5-9 F Jr. Bri Talbot 5-7 G Jr. Taylor Gunion 5-8 F Jr. Taylor Compton 5-3 G So. Last season was an inaugural learning curve for the Buffaloes in their first season under head coach Chris Zike. This year, the McAlester alum returns three starters to the court with plenty of basketball skill and hoops IQ. Leading the chart is VYPE Top 100 selection Todd Dawkins, a 6-5 junior, capable of scoring from the perimeter as well as off the dribble at the rim. Dawkins, only a junior, led the Buffs in scoring averaging 19.5 points while grabbing 7.2 rebounds and 2 steals per contest. “Versatility is what makes Todd so effective,” said Zike. “Scoring, defense and overall floor awareness allows him to be productive on both ends of the court.” Adding the Buffs success will be 6-2 senior guard Texas Pascale (9.2ppg/4.3asst) that Zike compliments his ability to finish as well as his leadership skills. “Texas brings a competitive attitude to the lineup,” said Zike, “his senior level experience is a bonus for us.” Jared Morgan (1.3ppg) returns to the starting rotation while 6-2 senior Jake Derichsweiler and 5-11 senior guard Keaton Clements will provide depth off the bench. “The experience Jared gained last season is showing this year,” said Zike. “His overall toughness, ball handling confidence and shooting touch opens the door to a lot of things.” The Buffs presence inside gets a boost with

the addition of 6-8 sophomore forward Justin Whatley, whose experience from hoops action while living in Germany gives Zike options. “Justin’s ability to score from the edge adds to our perimeter scoring,” said Zike, “and his size gives us a mismatch on the blocks.” The Buffs lineup will get another shot in the arm with the quickness and physicality of 5-11 senior Rhyln Stephens, who makes the switch from the gridiron to the hardwood.

Moving into his second season on the bench, Zike expects to get added production from junior forward Chase Kennedy along with sophomores Rashad Clark, Marion Cristwell. “We’re going to play up tempo,” said Zike referencing the Buffs use of a motion offense and use our length to force opponents to score from the perimeter. The athleticism, team chemistry and work ethic of this squad give us a chance to become a good team by playoffs.”

SEOK BASKETBALL PREVIEW

Red Oak Eagles Website: www.redoak.k12.ok.us GIRLS Casey Butcher (5th year) 13-14 Record: 28-3

Outlook: #UnfinishedBusiness it’s the mission of the Lady Eagles after last year’s dreams were left unfulfilled when Red Oak accepted the silver slipper as Class B girls state runner-up. With three starters returning from the Big House appearance last season, there’s plenty of reason to expect nothing short of a gold ball at season’s end. VYPE Top 100 selection Rainey Mauzey, a 6-0 junior center, proved her abilities to impact success last season averaging a double-double performance with 16.2 points and 11.1 rebounds per game. Head coach Casey Butcher’s lineup has two other weapons include 5-7 point guard Brittney Ward (14.6ppg/2.1reb/3.1asst) and 5-3 guard Paige Campagna

(6.4ppg/2.1asst/3.1steals). “All three of these girls have been there before,” confirmed Butcher, “and their play with passion style is something special.” Myranda Raney and Bailee Davis will provide added productivity at guard while 5-10 Shay Paul and 6-0 Hanna Mabry present additional tall challenges for Red Oak opponents. “When you put the pieces of the puzzle together, this is a good team,” admits Butcher, who enters his fifth season at the helm. “Our goal remains the same, out work everybody else, and with that approach on both ends of the court, we’ve got a chance to win it all.” Paige Campagna 5-3 G Sr. Bailee Davis 5-4 G Sr. Savanna Lovell 5-3 G Sr. Brittney Ward 5-7 G Jr. Rainey Mauzey 6-0 C Jr. Myranda Raney 5-6 G Jr. Shay Paul 5-10 F Jr. Hanna Mabry 6-0 C So. continued success. The Eagles return flight to the “Big House” among the final eight teams in Class B boys’ basketball will rest upon the wings of three returning starters including 6-2 junior forwards Dewayne Grogan (9.2ppg/12reb) and Colt Browne (12.3ppg/6.1reb). Jace Blaylock, who averaged 4.5 assists and 4.0 points as a freshman, will be joined by 6-2 junior guards Chase Butcher (3.3ppg) and Lane Grogan (2.0ppg) along with the play of 6-1 freshman Grayson Nix. “Grogan is a workhorse,” said head coach Trey Booth. “His work ethic doesn’t allow for a slump. With Blaylock’s coach on the floor skills and everyone wearing the purple and gold playing with a refuse to lose mentality, we’re going to be OK.” The schedule of the Eagles will require the expectation of hard

work to achieve the desired success. “It’s the toughest lineup in Class B,” confirmed Booth, “and that’s the way we want it. Wilburton Diggers Website: www.wilburton.k12. ok.us. GIRLS Justin Lowder (2nd year) 13-14 record: 19-9

Outlook: The Lady Diggers will be looking to make a fourth straight trip to the area tournament and hopefully beyond this year, as they return eight players with varsity experience, six of them seniors who will provide plenty of leadership. Wilburton will build the team around four-year starter Brooke Saxon (12.3ppg, 4.6rpg) at a guard spot and will welcome back 5-foot-8 forward Kristin Mitchell who missed all of last season with injury. Adding some size for the Lady Diggers will be Michaela Mathis (5-foot8, 6.3ppg) and Christina Medcalf (5-foot-9). Also returning for Wilburton will be Sarenity Reynolds (5.2ppg) who was a major factor in the playoffs and 5-foot-4 mighty-mite guard Sabrina Stanford (5.2ppg). “Although we lost three players to graduation, we return a lot of players who saw varsity action last year. We’ve worked hard during the summer and hope to take it to the next level this year,” says Lowder.

as head coach of the Diggers following a ten year run in the early part of the decade followed by some time in administration. He’ll inherit a young group with only one senior, Cody Shelley, who did not play last season. But Lay is high on the newcomer. “He has made big strides in the off season. He’s very athletic and can get to the basket,” says Lay. Joining Shelley will be a group comprised of a junior, three sophomores and a freshman. The Diggers are looking for production down low from 6-foot-5 sophomore center Dalton Battles who saw some varsity action last year. “He’s grown and matured over the summer and his size allows him to make a big impact in the lane. Our offense will run through him,” says Lay. Although they’re young, Lay thinks his team will be scrappers. “Our team is in transition with a lot young players. They work hard and I think we have a chance to surprise some people.” says the veteran coach. Dalton Battles 6-5 C So. Garrett Smith 5-10 G So. Jagger Sokolosky 6-2 F So. Outlook: The Lady Miners will rely on the athleticism and leadership skills of seniors Racheal Baker (10ppg, 6rpg) and Katie Sims (6ppg, 4rpg) to lead the way for the 2014-15 season. “Racheal has great leadership skills, sets the standards for others to follow, works hard on both ends of the floor, and takes pride in the little things in order to be successful each and every night,” said coach Danny Stone. Also back in the Hartshorne lineup will be junior guard Sarah Stilner (6ppg, 3rpg). Stone also expects to see contributions from Korie Edwards and Nashay Alexander. “We’re young and inexperienced but the potential is there,” said Stone. “We’ll just have to grow up quickly especially with the tough conference schedule we play. The kids are excited about the season ahead and so am I.” Racheal Baker 5-5 G Sr. Katie Sims 5-5 G Sr. Sarah Stilner 5-2 G Jr. BOYS Jeff Beare (9th year) 13-14 Record: 16-7

Outlook: After a season in Class 2A, The Miners return to Class 3A this year which is just fine with coach Jeff Beare. “Last year we played a lot of non-football schools who had several games under their belts before we got our football players back and transitioned. This year everyone

will be on the same schedule.” The Miners made it as far as the area consolation finals last season and with four starters returning, hopes are high for a chance to make the final eight this year. “We learned a lot last year and we’ll take that experience and grow even more this year,” said Beare. Point guard Isaiah Osife (13ppg) will be the go-to guy as he returns for his senior year. “Everything goes through him. He‘s a great leader and sets the example both in practice and during the game,” said Beare. Leadership will also come from the other senior on the squad, guard Bronson Jim. After an excellent freshman year, Troy Medicinebear (12.5ppg, 8rpg) brings back solid play on one of the wings for the Miners. The top five will be rounded out with Tyler Lindley (9.8ppg) and Troy Ray. Queens of the Court The road to the Big House and the state basketball tournament is a long and winding road. Led by the confidence and skills of a quartet of seniors, the Quinton Lady Savages are preparing to make the 150 mile bus ride and play on Saturday afternoon with dreams of winning the Class 2A girls title. Head coach Tara Satterfield only smiles with confidence while taking a look at her lineup knowing the value of basketball skills and confidence led by Quinton’s four of a kind seniors Shelby Brennan, Chassity McClary, Courtney Taylor and Kaycee Turner. “They’re so much more than just good basketball players,” said Satterfield, now in her third season as head coach of the Lady Savages. “It’s a unique collection of talent combined with a heart of champions.” If it’s true that dynamite comes in small packages, the Lady Savages are capable of exploding for points in bunches while forcing turnovers off the press with the “pesky” play of 5-2 guards Chassity McClary and Courtney Taylor. “Feisty and ferocious,” said Satterfield referencing the guard duo. “Chassity and Courtney give us a boost when they pick your pocket and get us points in transition.” “It’s give and take,” said Taylor of the teamwork from Quinton’s dynamic duo. “Chassity forces the turn and I make the steal and vice versa.” The head coach only smiles when acknowledging the three-point shooting touch of her two guards. “Chassity and Courtney have the green light,” said Satterfield. “And, because of their quickness, both are capable of scoring off the

dribble or driving past a defender then making no-look passes to Shelby or Kaycee on the block.” Brennan, a 5-8 forward, averaged 17.9 points and 9.2 rebounds to lead the Savages scoring a year ago while McClary totaled 11.8 points and Taylor contributed 6.5 points and 4.0 assists each night. Combined with Turner’s 4-plus rebounds and 3 blocks per game figures, Quinton’s senior quartet play with maturity and confidence in each other. “Respect is the best way to describe the unity between the four,” said Satterfield. “All for one and one for all is how they come to practice and play in every game.” If practice makes perfect, then McClary’s gym rat approach to practice is another reason to smile. “I’ll take 300 plus shots everyday,” said McClary, “stop and pop, off the dribble and at the free throw line. I’ve already had the dream of making the game winning free throw at the Big House.” Senior forwards Shelby Brennan and Kaycee Turner give Satterfield a perfect storm approach to the style of play. “Shelby is a three year starter that’s hard to defend on the block but can also step out and drop in a three,” said Satterfield. “Kaycee is so fluid in her jumping ability, she gets rebounds many others wouldn’t and knows how to finish as well.” A state qualifier in track, Turner, who stands 5-8, credits her high jump and sprint training as a reason for her shot blocking and rebounding success.” “It all goes together,” smiled Turner. “It really gets my motor running when a

blocked shot leads to a fast break score.” Tabbed by her coach as the “boss on the blocks”, Brennan only grins when thinking of the possibilities ahead in her senior season. “We’ve all worked so hard for our chance to be successful,” said Brennan, a preseason Class 2A All-VYPE selection. “I’ve dreamed of wanting to come back years from now and look at the gold ball in the trophy case and remember that any success came from our spirit of teamwork.” Add to the winning combination the skills of returning starter Mason McKee, a sophomore guard, along with Taylor Myers, Elizabeth Wilson and freshman Abby Myers and Satterfield acknowledges this could be a special season. “No fear,” said Satterfield, “these girls have the confidence to play through any adversity. Together they expect to rally and expect to win.” The combination of talents and self confidence along with trust in each other, no doubt give the Lady Savages of Quinton a reason to begin making reservations for the Big House in March. QUINTON BOYS BASKETBALL Coach: T.W. Estes (3rd Year) 13-14 Record: 16-10

Outlook: Despite the loss of four seniors to graduation, the Savages appear ready to attack as three starters return for head coach T.W. Estes, who begins his third campaign. After missing half of the season due to injury, 6-foot-5 senior forward Sam Simco (6.7ppg/2.4reb.) provides power in the paint while a pair of junior guards, Brad Davis (17.2ppg/3.4reb./2.7asst) and Joseph Perez (6.7ppg/4.2reb./2.1asst.) will add efficiency to the offensive end of the court. Estes also looks forward to the production of Christian Clayton, Elijah Fitzer, Lane Quinton, Austin Needham and Tristan Etchison on offense as well as aggressive defensive play. “Sam’s (Simco) return to the middle is a definite plus,” said Estes. “With Davis and Perez stabilizing play at guard mixed with the other 5-6 guys, we expect to be more consistent on both ends of the court.”

CANADIAN COUGARS Website: www.canadian.k12.ok.us GIRLS Cory Pitts (1st year) 13-14 Record: 6-17

Outlook: With a new coach and new system, the young Lady Cougars will have to mature on the run this season. With no seniors on the roster, new coach Cory Pitts doesn’t feel like he has any one player that holds things together. “There is no individual impact player for us. They’re just a hard working group of young ladies.” Pitts will rely on three juniors to provide the leadership for his crew in Michelle Greco, Krista Ketchum, and Taylor Jones. Sophomore Madeline Pitts and freshman Megan Newman will complete the top five for Canadian. “The key to this season will depend on our team picking up a new system quickly. They are learning how valuable hard work and hustle are in this game. Learning that lesson has been our biggest area of improvement thus far and should help carry us early in the season,” said Pitts. Outlook: Anticipation is high for the Cougars this season as they return four starters off a highly successful team. Six-foot-four point guard Chase Shearwood raised his scoring average nearly seven points a game last season (24ppg, 5rpg) which has earned him a spot in the VYPE TOP 100 and will be the focus of the offense for the Cougars. “He’s being looked at by several NAIA and Division II schools. He had one game over 50 points and a couple over 40 as a junior and just has the ability to take over a game,” said coach Daniel Lokey. Another veteran back for his senior season is center/forward Ty Weiher (10ppg, 10rpg) and junior Tanner Freeman will add to the experience level. Center/forward Colton Harris, who was hampered with a back injury last season, also returns for Canadian. The Cougars will get needed depth from point guard DJ Green and Paul Childers. “We’ve got a lot of talent, experience, size, and depth on this team. It should be an exciting year,” said Lokey.

Website: www.stuart.ok.k12.us GIRLS Melinda Dobson (7th year) 13-14 Record: 17-6

leader that will be counted on to spur the offensive charge. She should have some veteran help with Madi Robinson (6.3 ppg/5.2 reb), Maddie Partain (6.1 ppg, 4.3 reb) and Kaylee Ervin (4.4 ppg, 3.8 stl). Outlook: With a strong returning nucleus look for

the Bulldogs to be right in the thick of the state tournament chase in Class 2A once the playoffs roll around. They welcome back three starters, spurred by Bradley McKnight (19.1 ppg, 3.4 asst) and Johnathan Diamond (13.8 ppg, 3.2 asst), who should be two of the better perimeter players in their classification. The senior duo of Dakota Adams (4.5 ppg, 6.1 reb) and Rylee Barton (4.1 ppg, 4.9 reb) will be counted on for even bigger contributions inside this season.

As a freshman Godon averaged four points and four rebounds per game. In the backcourt point guard Lexi Hankins (5-2, So.) and shooting guard Hollyn Newsom (5-4, Sr.) will be the Lady Bulldogs two main weapons. BROKEN BOW SAVAGES Website: www.bbisd.org GIRLS Dottie Slabaugh 13-14 Record: 16-9

Outlook: Last season the Lady Savages finished the year 16-9 but missed out on the area tournament after losing to eventual state champion Ft. Gibson in the regional tournament. This year Broken Bow brings back just one starter from last year in forward Michaela Richbourg (5-8, So.). As a freshman last year Richbourg averaged 10 points, six rebounds and two steals per game and will be expected to carry an even bigger load this year. Keyonna Gordon (5-9, Jr.) and Katelyn Saelim (5-7, Jr.) will start in the frontcourt with Richbourg and give Broken Bow some solid depth in the paint. Shalee Brantley (5-6, Jr.) and Erica Baker (5-0, Jr.) meanwhile will anchor the team in the backcourt and be in charge of distributing the ball to the Lady Savages’ talented post players. “We will be young with only one returning starter. The success of our season will depend heavily on the development of our young players. I believe we will be ready to make a deep run when playoff time comes,” said head coach Dottie Slabaugh. Outlook: Led by possibly the best player you have never heard about Daekwon Cubit (6-2, Sr.) the Savages are extremely excited about this season. Last year Cubit averaged 8.6 points and 8.1 rebounds per game playing out of position. This year with Cubit moving back to his natural spot at guard head coach Ryan Woolsey expects his star to average close to 20 points and 10 rebounds a game. Jaylon Watson (6-0, Sr.) and Jordan Williston (6-1, Jr.) give Broken Bow two extremely athletic forwards. Watson averaged 5.3 points and 6.8 rebounds a game last year and is a DI football recruit, Williston meanwhile is the defending state champion in the high jump and is a force on the glass. Rounding out the starting rotation for Broken Bow this year will be forward Jonothan Hurd (6-2, Sr.) and guard Konner Neal (6-0, So.). Seniors Torrii Tarkington (12.0 ppg, 6.0 reb), Ray’shione Smith (10.0 ppg, 3.0 assts) and Beautiful Brown (10.0 ppg, 6.0 reb) should all add even more production along with 6-foot junior Shanguia Patterson (9.0 ppg, 6.0 reb), who emerged as a sophomore as a force in the paint.

Outlook: The Lady Warriors wear their emotions on their sleeve and are not afraid to take the court in pressure situations. Head coach Katedria Mosley returns a solid nucleus of players this season. Point guard Miracle Beard (4ppg, 4spg) is young, but brings plenty of energy to the floor. The emotional leader of this team could be Tahjanae Harris (12ppg, 5rpg, 4spg) who plays a physical style of basketball. Jula Harjo (6ppg, 3rpg, 2spg) and Marquisha Vann (14ppg, 7rpg, 5spg) bring good size to the court and can score from just about any spot on the floor. Vann averaged 14 points a game as a junior. Samantha Wolf (6ppg, 8rpg, 2spg) will start at center. The senior is a rebounding machine. Steveesha Cursh is only a freshman, but has shown some serious skills in practice. Haworth LIONS Website: www.haworth.k12.ok.us GIRLS Hiyadeja Moore 13-14 Record: 9-19

Outlook: The Lady Lions enter the 2014 season with a new coach. Hiyadeja Moore takes over a team that has limited varsity experience. She will have her hands full leading this group, as the Lady Lions have one of the toughest schedules in the conference. She will have to make sure her team is ready from the

gun because Haworth opens the season at home against defending Class 2A state champions, Preston. Fortunately, her starting lineup is loaded with upperclassmen. Lone senior Mandy Steele (5-11) will be a physical presence in the post. The backcourt contains three junior guards: Baylie Bray (5-6), Elena Richardson (5-5) and KK Threadgill (5-6). Joining Steele in the frontcourt is junior Nykorian Williams (5-9). Moore will look to Threadgill, who took last season off, to use her ability to take over games. “We have a young group of players who will gain plenty of varsity experience this season,” head coach Moore said. “We probably have the toughest schedule in our conference, which will only help.” Mandy Steele 5-11 P Sr. Baylie Bray 5-6 PG Jr. Nykorian Williams 5-9 P/F Jr. Elena Richardson 5-5 G Jr. KK Threadgill 5-6 G Jr.

Outlook: Coach Burtchal Griffin enters his seventh season at the helm of the Haworth Lions with a championship or bust mindset, and for a good reason. Griffin is returning one of the most productive players in the state in Oscar Rivera (6-1). Rivera, who averaged 15 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists last season, will be the centerpiece for Griffin’s lineup. In addition to Rivera, the Lions boast experience and tremendous size. Senior James Pollard and junior Sterling Hammond, both 6-foot-5, will make a huge impact on the glass and defending the paint. Joining Rivera in the backcourt is sophomore KJ Flemming (6-0) and senior Devin Johnson (5-10). Head coach Darian Dickson can shuffle the rotation and never miss a beat using the talents of Cord Fitzgerald (7.8ppg), Trey Hawkins, Colten Wall and Jacob Sockey, a 6-6 sophomore post player who averaged 16.5 points before suffering a fractured ankle. “We have a lot of weapons,” admits Dickson with confidence. “Size, quickness, ability and the knowledge of how to win give us an advantage when we take the floor.
