American Family Athlete Profile: Chloe Odle Pitcher and outfielder for Beloit High School varsity softball, Chloe Odle, is excited to return to competition after missing out on her freshman year and a chance to play with sister Darby, who is now at Friends University. “Last year Beloit graduated a lot of seniors, making us a young team this season. Recently many records have been broken and I hope we will continue to break more this year. I think we will have a great season and definitely will be a team to watch out for,” said Odle. Odle loves playing softball for her high school and her traveling team, Kansas Renegades.

“What I love most about my team is that we push each other to be the best and the healthy competition that forms between the players. My favorite thing about my teammates is that we are all friends not only during softball, but outside of softball too,” said Odle. Outside of softball, Odle is a member of the school volleyball team and she’s on the cheer squad. “At school I am part of the SAFE committee, foreign language club, science club, and B club,” said Odle. “After high school I would like to continue my softball career and get a degree in architecture.” In her free time Odle enjoys spending time with family and friends.

Hellas Construction recently donated 30,000 square feet of turf for a grand lawn project at Botanical Gardens. The turf that was used is called Grasso, which is Hellas’ landscape turf.
“It is spectacular and people love to walk barefooted on it. It’s the best turf that I have ever seen,” said Marty Miller, Director of Botanical Gardens.
“I can tell you it’s the coolest stuff I have ever seen. The installation was done by the Hellas personnel and they did a great job, with some of the best professionalism that I have experienced with a construction company. All I can say is it was a first class job performed by Hellas, using a first class product.” Primarily used for sport facilities, Hellas has been the primary turf provider for the Greater Wichita Area Leagues’ fields, as well as other schools in the state. Just recently Hellas started residential turf in Wichita.

took 12th.

Gipson said it was such a gratifying feeling every time he left APT knowing the work they put him through was going to be beneficial in the long run.

“I absolutely love the staff at Advanced,” Gipson said. “My main physical therapist was Mallory, but Amanda and Heather also worked with me sometimes. They were all so nice and encouraging whenever I felt like I couldn’t do something.”
Brennan Gipson of McPherson was chosen as the Advanced Physical Therapy Athlete of the Month for March. Gipson went to APT due to a loose kneecap that kept slipping in and out of place due to countless hours on the tennis court. “The most beneficial part of therapy for me was definitely the quad and knee strengthening exercises they had me do,” Gipson said. “Lots of squats and lunges of various difficulties were involved.”
Aside from tennis, Gipson is also the manager for the volleyball and men’s basketball pro-gram. He is involved in Scholar’s Bowl, Kay Club and International Club.
After graduation, Gipson plans to attend Oklahoma State and major in Aerospace Admin-istration with the hope of working operations for a major global airline. While he will not play tennis in college, Gipson will still play it in intramurals.
ILIOPSOAS MUSCLE STRAIN What is this strange muscle and where is it? The iliopsoas muscle is joining of the iliacus and the psoas muscles. The two muscles are separate in the abdomen, but usually merge in the proximal one third of the thigh. This joined muscle connects to the femur at the lesser trochanter via the iliopsoas tendon and acts as the strongest flexor of the group of hip flexors. The hip flexors are responsible for moving Aimi Orton, PTA the knee towards the chest during activity. An iliopsoas strain occurs when one or more of these hip flexor muscles become either stretched or torn. An iliopsoas strain is most commonly caused by sudden movements such as sprinting, kicking and changing direction while running. Other factors which can contribute to a strain within the hip flexor muscle group include muscle weakness and tightness, inappropriate training, not warming up correctly, joint stiffness, poor biomechanics, decreased fitness and poor core stability. When one sustains an iliopsoas strain, they might feel a sudden pulling or sharp sensation in in the front of the hip or in the groin region. They might feel this painful sensation when going from a sitting/standing position, going up the stairs, walking for long periods of time, sitting for long periods of time, trying to run after the injury, etc. There might be some tenderness in the area, swelling or bruising as well. Initially, rest is the first step following the injury, allowing the body
to through the inflammatory phase of the healing process and for that initial swelling to calm down before seeking any PT treatment. Applying ice for 15-20 min to the area a few times a day is a great way to help calm down the pain and swelling. Luckily, physical therapy is an excellent avenue to treat an iliopsoas muscle strain! Our therapists at Advanced Physical Therapy offer a variety of ways to help assess and treat your injury to get you back to your normal functional abilities. Some modalities that would be beneficial to an iliopsoas strain would be myofascial tissue release, dry-needling, joint mobilization, ultrasound and E-STIM which are all available at Advanced Physical Therapy clinics! After your PT builds an exercise program that is catered to your individual goals and needs, they will build a time frame on how long you will need to be in physical therapy; depending on the severity of the injury, comorbidities, etc. After you complete your PT and your goals are met, our PT’s at APT do an excellent job at providing you with the tools you need to ensure that you stay healthy and prevent this injury from happening in the future. Wichita Classical Basketball By Matt Browning The Wichita Classical School boys basketball team was chosen as the Visit Wichita Team of the Month. The Saints went to the Salina market and defeated Solomon 62-42 on January 29. Classical finished last season 11-10 and eclipsed that win total early in February this season. The Saints are the only team in their sub-state with a winning record, so postseason success appears to be possible.
“We have had some good teams the past couple of years, but we’ve had some things fall into place this year for us that have not always gone our way,” Classical School coach Tim Dolloff said. “There have been some coaches and parents that have put in a significant amount of time working with younger kids in our grammar school.”
Classical is not affiliated with a league, so Dolloff, who is also the athletic director, had to navigate a schedule while in the middle of a pandemic.

“This year I was really sweating what would happen if our number of regular season games got cut back,” Dolloff said. “I was afraid that most teams would only play their league opponents and we would be left holding the bag. I am glad that didn’t happen.”

Peabody-Burns’s Bobby Kyle: Salina Regional Coach of the Month By Matt Browning Bobby Kyle, who is the head boys basketball coach of Peabody-Burns, was chosen as the Salina Regional Hospital Coach of the Month for March. The Warriors are one of the top teams in the Salina area this season. Last year, Peabody-Burns won just five games, so the turnaround this year has been dramatic.
“Going into this season, I felt like we had a good chance of having success,” Kyle said. “We had high expectations for our team. We are looking to improve every year and the kids are showing that they want to improve and meet those high expectations themselves.”

Kyle said the Warriors have been locked in since the first day of practice, listening and believing in what the coaching staff has said.
“The key to the success of my team is kids buying in on what we are teaching them and trying to do everything they can to improve every day at practice,” Kyle said.
Kyle, who has been the head coach of Peabody-Burns for four years, has preached defense to the Warriors
and letting offense come from that.
“I firmly believe you have success if you play good defense and rebound and take care of the ball,” Kyle said. “Your offense comes from your defense.”

By Matt Browning Kyla Kind of Bennington was chosen for the Hog Wild Performance of the Month for March. Kind scored 15 of the Bulldogs’ 30 points in their 30-28 victory over rival Ell-Saline on February 9th. “It's always great to win against your league rivals although scoring half my team's points isn’t all up to me,” Kind said. “I could not be scoring as many points in a game if it weren’t for my teammates.” Bennington has had a rather hectic season. The Bulldogs have been quarantined twice and as of the middle of February, they had only played 12 games. It's a hectic time right now, but all my teammates and I want to do is play some quality basketball and hope for a win,” Kind said. “Coach continues to tell us to put ourselves in a good situation so that (quarantine) would not have to happen to us again, and that’s what we’re hoping for.” Kind, who was an all-league performer last season, leads the Bulldogs in scoring this season, averaging nine points per game. “Coach Trout seems to always remind me that ‘we like threes but we LOVE when you drive,” Kind said. After she graduates, Kind plans to attend Kansas Wesleyan on a cheer scholarship. She wants to major in business and become a pharmaceutical representative.

Eli Sawyers Southeast of Saline Expectations are always high at the start of a season. Then typically things settle in and teams get into a groove after some ups and downs early on. Eli Sawyers and the Southeast of Saline basketball team experienced a little of that early on, but they continued to improve and are playing together and looking more like a seasoned team. “We started off the season pretty slow. Going into Christmas we were just 2-4. I think we have played tougher since then, but we need to bring intensity every game,” said Sawyers. “I think we are more of a get out and go team. We like to get out on the break and score. We need to do this more often. I think we are becoming closer as a team, and we are much more gelled since we started the season.”

Sawyers and his teammates continue to make improvements which are helping them down the stretch. Keeping games close and scoring in crucial moments are two areas they continue to step up in. Sawyers said he’s proud of the team and the way they have competed.

“I’ve been proud of the way we have hung in most of our games. We couldn’t finish all of them which would be something to improve on. I also like the way we can score when we are an unselfish team and pass the ball well,” said Sawyers. One game stands out to Sawyers this season and helped set the tone for the rest of the season.
“I think the Minneapolis game coming out of Christmas was big. We were able to beat a ranked and undefeated team. It was just what we needed coming back from Christmas break,” said Sawyers. “We have been pressing more, and putting more pressure on teams. I think this is an adjustment because when people trap, others have to come help stop the ball.”
Sawyers said his teammates are everything to him. He loves playing with this group of guys.
“My teammates mean a lot to me. I would not have the stats that I do without teammates like Nakari and Camden. The team is what I play for. I play for a win every night. This team means everything to me,” said Sawyers. Once basketball season comes to an end, Sawyers and many of his teammates will look
Eli Sawyers to spring sports. But Sawyers plans to play spring basketball instead of running track and plans to hit the weight room to get stronger. He said his mother Amber has been a big influence on him and she knows a thing or two about basketball as well. “I think my mom is really the biggest influence. We are very close, she also played college basketball, and always tells me when I need to play better, or when I have been playing very well,” said Sawyers.

Jenna is a senior and is a great pitcher and competitor. She has committed to play at Sem-inole State College next year. She is a great leader on and off the field. At the plate in 2019, she had 37 hits, 22 singles, 10 doubles, five homeruns, and 34 RBI’s. Her officially season batting average was 0.479. On the mound, she

Pitcher and Short Stop Cameron is a natural athlete and brings a lot of competition to the field.
All-State (Wichita Eagle). I’m not sure where Madi will play this season as she can play any position, including pitcher and catcher. As a freshman, she hit .393 (24/61) and slugged .705, with three doubles, two triples, four homeruns, and 19 RBI. Madi was a RS hitter for our volleyball team that finished 2nd at state this past fall and is currently unde-feated, No.3 ranked wrestler in her first year of wrestling.

STUDENT OF THE MONTH Malaina Giacoletto, Bennington In only her freshman year, Bennington High School’s Malaina Giacoletto is making an impact in her fellow students by participating in the Safe Program at school. The SAFE program is a teen-run, peer-to-peer program focusing on increasing teen restraint compliance through education, positive rewards and enforcement. Malaina said she loves the message it sends to her classmates. “I love the message it sends, and the group activities we do together. I’m glad that me and my classmates are able to make an impact,” said Giacoletto.
“The Safe program is in my opinion something really important in a few different ways. First and foremost, unsafe driving in teens and adults
Giacoletto said if someone was interested in being part of the Safe program at Bennington or any other school, they should commit and help make our roads safe and keep our drivers and passengers safe. “If someone was to want to join Safe, I would tell them to commit to the cause. Don’t join just to socialize. While that is a part of it, you shouldn’t join just for that. Really put in effort to go to the activities, and make sure your heart is in the right place. It’s an easy way to make an impact on the community without having to
sacrifice school time,” said Giacoletto. When her time in high school is complete, her plans are to go to college and pursue a degree in either graphic are or mental health counseling. The Safe Program is another avenue Giacoletto uses to meet more of her classmates and spread the word about seatbelt safety.

The Alley Bowler of the Month is Kaleb Lininger from Central High School. Lininger is a senior at Central and a member of the varsity bowling team. It was two fellow students who got him involved during his junior year. Chase Davis and Preston Miller convinced Lininger to give it a shot. By his own admission, Lininger has enjoyed competing for his school and with his friends.

“My teammates are fun and excellent bowlers. Most of them are childhood friends and help me and each other gain confidence after throwing a bad ball,” said Lininger. His favorite memory as a bowler at Central came when he and his teammates celebrated a state title. “Celebrating with teammates after winning state last year is my favorite memory as a bowler at Central,” said Lininger.
The senior has big plans for his future. Upon graduating from Central High School, Lininger plans to attend college and pursue a degree that will keep him working in sports for years to come. “I’ll be attending Barton County Community College and pursuing a career in Athletic Training/ Sports Medicine,” said Lininger.

Salina South’s Madalyn Crow: Spangles Athlete of the Month Spotlight Madalyn Crow, senior midfielder for South High School, has played soccer for nearly her entire life. “I’ve been playing soccer since I was probably three or four years old,” said Crow.
As a member of the varsity soccer team, Crow is looking forward to getting back on the pitch and finishing her high school career on the field instead of at home like last season. She enjoys being around her teammates and over the years she has built special bonds with many of them. “I love that we aren’t just a team but a family. Everyone gets along no matter what happens outside of the season,” said Crow. Looking back on her career, Crow said there have been many memorable moments and this season may create a few as well. But one does stand out amongst the rest.

“My most memorable moment is beating Salina Central my sophomore year. That’s was our seventh year in a row beating them, and it was also my dad’s 100th win

as head coach. I thought it was really cool how his 100th win was against our crosstown rivals,” said Crow. Her father, Trey Crow, is head coach for both the girls and boy’s soccer teams at South.
Expectations this season are on the rise with several experienced players returning to the team. The pressure is something Crow and her teammates welcome. “I expect to have a pretty successful season this year. I think we have 15 seniors as of right now, so we have a lot of returning seniors as well as quite a few quality players in the younger classes,” said Crow.
But on the field isn’t the only place Crow excels. The classroom is a top priority and going to college is the goal after high school. “Academics are really important to me. I have maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout
Madalyn Crow high school and I always strive to achieve as high as possible academically,” said Crow. “After graduation I am wanting to attend Johnson County Community College and play soccer there.” In her free time Crow enjoys doing anything crafty and watching her favorite television show, Criminal Minds.

Kameron got 6th at state as a freshman and he won state as a sophomore beating his teammate by one shot. He has five individual wins in his two-year career and was a member of the state championship teams at Sacred Heart High school
as a freshman and sophomore. He was 1st team All-State as a freshman and sophomore. He is on a 40 percent scholarship to the University of Nebraska. He is ranked 2nd in his class in the state of Kansas and is 3rd overall by junior golf scoreboard. He competed in the Notah Begay III junior golf championship which was aired on the Golf Channel December 2020. He also got 3rd in the stroke play portion of the Kansas Am August 2020. Marissa is an excellent example of a leader both in and out of the pool. She is extremely talented in the sport of swimming as well as a great role model for our younger swimmers. She comes to practices and meets with a positive attitude every single day and never once complains about anything. She is her teammates’ #1 fan and is always encouraging them at meets and in practices. Marissa is such a hard worker and a kind and caring person. We are truly lucky to have her on the team.
