Bennington High School cheer was featured after they took top honors in a VYPE poll, while VYPE editor Matt Browning caught up with the Lady Panthers of Nickerson High School. Clay Center’s Clara Edwards was named the Academic Athlete of the Month.

A new way of life hit high school sports hard as concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic forced administrations to make tough decisions about spring sports and the remaining school year. VYPE featured several athletes including Monique Fair of Salina South, Connor Anglin of Salina, Duke Hilbert of Bennington, Terin Rundus of Concordia and many more. Hanover girls basketball also made the April issue as they looked to wrap up a title in Class 1A.

WHAT IF?

Spring Sports 2020‌ What If? Thursday, March 11th, Black Thursday in the VYPE Nation - the final day of high school athletic competition for the 2019-20 year thanks to the Coronavirus. There are so many fantastic success stories that were left untold. As part of the VYPE YearEnd review, our editorial folks decided to have some fun and make predictions on what might have been for some of our VYPE Nation athletes! WHAT IF?

Marion allowed only six earned runs in its three games in the state tournament, while the duo of Lanning and Carpenter combined to drive in eight runs as the Warriors finally broke through for a championship.

Perhaps most importantly, Marion brought back a formidable starting pitcher in Jaxson Tracy, who went 5-0 with a 2.05 ERA in 44 innings.

Marion Baseball

They returned two first-team all-league hitters in third baseman, Luke Lanning, who hit .394 with 24 runs batted in and second baseman, Cooper Carpenter, who hit .391 with 28 runs batted in. Lanning also pitched.

In 2020, the Warriors had plenty of talent back to be a threat yet again for that elusive title.

VYPE KANSAS

The Marion baseball team had been to the 2-1A Tournament semifinals three consecutive years, but was never able to get over the hump and win a championship.

Hillsboro simply ran out of gas against a talented Bishop Seabury team. The Trojans trailed by as many as 16 in the first half and never managed to get much closer in the second half as they lost 65-50. They finished the season 16-10.

::

The Trojans led by as many as 11 points in the second half, but the Black Bears cut their deficit to 49-47 with one minute left. Hillsboro made four of five free throws to earn a bid in the title game against Bishop Seabury.

VYPE KANSAS

Prediction: Building on his 16-point performance against Pratt-Skyline, sophomore Matthew Potucek scored 19 points as Hillsboro continued its postseason run with a 53-48 victory.

2A Golf... What if? Salina Sacred Heart standout basketball player and golfer Tate Herrenbruck injured his knee during basketball season, which significantly hindered the Knights’ chances at repeating as the 2A boys golf champions. However, Sacred Heart did return individual champion junior Kameron Shaw, who won the 2019 title by a shot over Herrenbruck.

Moreover, the 2020 2A Tournament was to be held at Salina Municipal Golf Course, so Shaw had plenty of experience on the track.

10

Prediction: Shaw raced out to a 3-under 67 in the first round after making six birdies on his round. He held a

commanding five-shot lead heading into the second day of the tournament.

It was more of the same on day two for Shaw, who fired a bogey-free 4-under 66 to finish with a score of 136, which was 11 shots better than second place.

Herrenbruck will be attending the University of Kansas in the fall to play golf for the Jayhawks. Shaw is well on his way to following in similar footsteps.

Student of the Month Grace Todd Wichita Trinity Grace Todd was a standout gymnast, who attended Wichita Trinity, before a serious back injury cut her career short. Todd suffered the injury as a sophomore, but tried to return as a junior. In fact, she took first at regionals in the vault. Still though, her back was deemed too fragile for competition.

Aside from participating in gymnastics, Todd was a part of the National Honor Society at Trinity. She also went on an art history trip to Italy and was in a small group that helped mentor underclassmen. Next year, Todd will be attending the University of Kansas where she plans to be a pre-med major. Todd was planning on participating in track and field and powerlifting before COVID-19 shut down schools.

PEDIATRIC THERAPY: W SITTING

Amanda Noll, PT, DPT, CSCS

One of the most common injuries we hear about in sports is often a diagnosis that athletes, parents, and coaches dread hearing: the ACL tear. This is because ACL tears are season ending, especially with the most current research advocating for longer recovery times as it has been shown that the ACL repair may not be fully healed for 1-2 years after surgery. But before we get too far into recovery and prevention, we need to answer the question, “What is an ACL tear and why is the ACL so important?” ACL stands for Anterior Cruciate Ligament and is one of the main stabilizing ligaments in the knee. It prevents the tibia (shin bone) from coming too far forward from the femur (thigh bone), keeping the knee stable and allowing you to run, cut, and jump without your knee “giving out.” So, how do we prevent ACL tears? The best way to prevent an ACL tear is to increase and maintain good strength throughout your core and legs, especially in the hips. Along with maintaining good strength, it is extremely important to have good jumping and landing mechanics. Many times, improper landing technique puts the knee in a very vulnerable position, increasing your risk for a tear. This is especially prominent in teenage girls. So learning and practicing proper jumping and landing will help decrease your risk. Another great way to decrease your risk of an ACL tear is to play multiple sports a year and not specialize in one sport before the age of 18. Playing multiple sports allows your body to learn to move and react to different stimuli and therefore your body will become stronger and more equipped to handle the demands of different sports, as well as preventing overuse injuries, which furthers your risk for ACL tears. However, even the best and strongest athletes will get ACL tears despite how well they train. Sometimes, these injuries are inevitable, especially with contact sports where movements can be unpredictable. So, if you do end up suffering and ACL tear, know that recovery to the point where you are as good (or better) than before is very possible with the right physical therapy. A well trained Physical Therapist will guide you through each step of the 9-12 month recovery period and help you get back in the game, just as good or better than before. If you happen to suffer and ACL tear, or want to get set up with an ACL tear prevention strengthening program, know that you will be in good hands at any of our Advanced Physical Therapy locations. WHAT IF?

5A Basketball....What if? Over the past 12 seasons, the Andover Central and McPherson girls basketball teams have combined to win five state championships.

And the two tradition-rich programs were certainly headed for a title game tilt this season. The Jaguars defeated DeSoto 6152 in the 5A quarterfinals, while the Bullpups took down BasehorLinwood 59-44.

Up next for Andover Central in the semifinals was Topeka Seaman, while McPherson got fellow

5A power, St. Thomas Aquinas.

Prediction: The Jaguars were surprisingly dominant against a Topeka Seamen team that had won 20 games. Andover Central jumped out to a 16-6 first quarter lead and never looked back, winning 5943. Sophomore Brittany Hers haw led the Jaguars with 18 points and 12 rebounds.

McPherson and Aquinas exchanged blows all game in a back and forth affair. The Saints led at halftime 21-18, the Bullpups outscored Aquinas 14-7 in the third quarter and held on for a 42-38 win. Grace Pyle led the Bullpups in scoring with 14 points.

A fractured scaphoid 12 months ago in his left wrist ended Brandon’s football and wrestling season. Originally thought to be OK to heal on its own, the fracture hadn’t improved by the time 2019 started. Brandon had to have surgery, and Byron Grauerholz at Salina Ortho performed the successful surgery on Jan. 24. It went so well that Brandon was able to play baseball for the Vikings in the spring. “It felt normal after awhile,” Brandon says. “I didn’t have to do rehab or anything, but I had to work on my mobility in the wrist, and how to swing a bat again.” A few follow-up visits ensured the bone had healed properly, and Brandon said he was grateful to Dr. Cobb Kaylee Cooper Kadyn Grauerholz and the staff at Salina Ortho for helping him get Salina Central Salina South back on the field.
