Editor’s Note Dream It - Believe It - Live It

Editor’s Note

What a season to start a new thing, explore new ideas and improve our life with the right beat ! These definitely make summer in Seattle the most unforgettable and the most wanted time in a year.

Eddie Amintohir Just as the changing weather would glorify each season down to minutes of details, thus our company would provide our community of big dreamers with the right tools, the right directions and sources which would enable them to achieve their dreams. The way our magazine works is just like Global Positioning System for your dream : you won’t get lost and it warns you of any obstacles and it will also help you to anticipate for each sharp turn – YOU WILL NOT GET LOST ! Initially, three of us* did not dare to have dreams or dream about our f inish line until we found the GPS on each of us.Now, each of us h a s e m b ra c e d t h e g i a n t dreams which escalate our lives way beyond the boundaries of our limitations.

As we walk along the sea shore under the shimmering sun, we would feel a refreshing oceanic breeze. Or, simply lay down on the park and tranquil your mind by relaxing grassy scents. As we gaze beyond the earth boundaries, thinking outside school and work demands, we found “Vuelto” which literally means “Change.” A change that gives new element to a mundane daily routine, a change that takes out a mediocre and average lifestyle, a change that could be shared. Of course we had made thousands or even millions of mistakes to come to this point but that will not stop us from pushing forward towards our dreams. Now we are on the way to the top of the highest possibilities and excitement that people could ever imagine – Are you coming with us? You would be amazed how we are going to take you off the ground and untie your boundaries which may have been with you for decades. All of us only have one time to live a life that we want and a dream we want to achieve : don’t let your thoughts limit you for what you are actually capable of.

HEALTH

Beneficial or Detrimental? Coffee has become the most frequently ingested drink worldwide, it is consumed for its energizing and revitalizing effect. One-third of the world’s population is coffee consumer. The total amount these people consumed is larger than any other beverage.” According to the World Resources Institute’s estimates, the average Amer-

ican downed 416 8-ounce cups of coffee in 2009. So what does this cup of Joy do to your body? Studies show that coffee have a few important bioactivities but could also have some adverse effects. By : Michelle Tan

In brewed coffee extracts, there are heterocyclic compounds and phenolic compounds found in the roasted beans which show significant antioxidant activity. Due to the activity, coffee is known to show a protective effect on cancer such as liver cancer. Antioxidants also prevent or postpone the onset of degenerative diseases like dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. Coffee also contains minerals like magnesium and chromium, which helps the body produce insulin that would control glucose in diabetes patients. There have also been studies of coffee linked to lower risks of stroke and heart rhythm disturbances.

4 Vuelto Mag | July - August 2012

A great benefit of coffee is how it enhances alertness and concentration especially on those late nights of cramming before finals or being awake during the early hours of morning lecture.

O

What are the detriments?

n the other hand, there’s the possibility that coffee is carcinogenic as it’s roasted (National Institutes of Health). Some detriments do occur, such as “temporary hypertension, an increase in blood pressure, due to a period of abstinence from coffee drinking. In addition there is also a modest decrease in heart rate.” In general, though, these drawbacks are relatively minimal. Based on extensive epidemiological studies, there is no correlation between coffee ingestion and certain risk factors like long term hypertension, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, gout or cancer diseases.

A

By the way, how will coffee affect us?

n important factor that can determine how coffee will affect your body is the method of brewing your cup of Joe. Filtered coffee may be better than boiled coffee, which may “increase the serum (plasma) cholesterol level in your body due to the presence of diterpenes, cafestol and kaweol.” The secret? The oils containing diterpenes are absorbed by the paper filter.

W hat now?

Even though there has been countless studies and research on the correlation between coffee and disease the evidence is limited and inconsistent. Most studies are the results of coffee drinkers’ habits not from researchers asking people to drink coffee to study the effects of the Java. Future studies need to be done before coming to the real conclusion of how the components of coffee work biologically and chemically. Mechanisms

involved in such processes are still unclear, so further research needs to be done. Such as how coffee can decrease the likelihood of developingdementia and Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, lowering the risk of liver cancer, protection against type 2 diabetes, just to name a few.

IS YOUR EDUCATION REALLY WORTH IT

Greece showing signs of a weakening economy By: Daxi Tang

W

ith the recession still looming along around the world and people are struggling to make ends meet. In the United States alone there are nearly 400,000 people unemployed and Greece showing signs of a weaken economy that might cause the world going into another financial turmoil. To make matter worse, it is around the time of graduation and students are looking for jobs to pay off their student loans. However, Federal Government does not seem to be as altruistic about the failing economy. The Federal Government is in the midst of dilemma to raise the interest rates of the Stafford student loans; raising the interest rates from 3.4% to 6.8% for their unsubsidized student loans. With already a weaken economy and newly graduated students are experiencing difficulty looking for a job. If the Federal Government does decide to double the interest rates of the student loans, the American Dream will become a distant relic of the past for the graduating students. However, President Barack Obama is trying to stop this cupidity of the legislation. But is that truly enough to curb the endless battles of rising education cost?

8 Vuelto Mag | July - August 2012

With the United States ever growing debt reaching nearly $16 trillion dollars; that means each taxpayer has an estimated debt burden of about $138,000. There are so much debts circulating in the United States economy and that forces the Federal government to cut spending in many imperative areas of the country’s growth; such as freezing Federal employees’ salary, education and many more. President Obama once said that education is a necessity to maintain a strong educated work force in the United States. In spite of the high unemployment in the nation’s workforce, most Americans feel discouraged to return back to school to upgrade their skills because of the high rising tuition cost. In addition, with the Federal Government considering to raise the interest rates of the Stafford student loans, that further defers more people from pursuing an higher education.

Second, another great way to counter the cost of higher education, people could start learning from online classes; recently Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Stanford has started offering online classes to the general public without any payment. That means anybody whom has access to the internet could start taking classes from professors teaching at MIT or Stanford. According to Forbes, a Stanford professor Sebastian Thrun offered his “Instruction to Artificial Intelligence” course online without charge. There were as many as 160,000 people signed up for that course. The professor also mentioned that the people could probably get the same quality of education for just 1 to 2 percent of the cost. (Ronald Trowbridge, 2012)

So, what could be done to combat such difficult times? There are many ways to combat such hindrance. First, people whom are graduating from high school could consider studying at a community college and transfer to a 4 year institution after their initial 2 year. The community colleges are vastly cheaper than most universities; students usually pay less than half of what their counter parts would be paying at a university and students could save on living expenses by living at home. In addition, community college is a great way to get your feet wet about college life, because the classes in community colleges usually have a smaller student pool size than university classes; that would mean that the professors have more time to commit to each student and students could have a better learning curve studying at a community college.

Finally, people shouldn’t be burden by the cost of rising education. Education is an important aspect of society and it helps to maintain a strong workforce that will eventually attract more investors to invest in United States because of the strong educated workforce. In the long run, cutting education isn’t the right way to reduce government spending, it will probably cost more harm than good. However, the government could consider looking to cut spending somewhere else; such as military spending or even do a tax reform. With so many lives would be stake, the government should take a serious consideration about raising the Stafford student loan or cutting spending in education.

A

t the beginning of the year, people often write their New Year resolutions. Some people stick to them, but the majority would forget their New Year resolutions. It is necessary to keep track of our goals to know whether we are making progress or not. Goals need to be evaluated and their development may not exist unless a written progress, journal, or checklist is used. Summer would be more meaningful when you add self-development activities into your vacation list.

Make cash + progress Don’t just look for extra cash; but also work for the things that draw you closer to your dream. Often, business or work demand deviates us away from what is actually important. Nowadays, people are more focused on earning a living, rather than building a fortune. If one’s focus is on making cash to fulfill one’s desire, one would find one’s self working all the time, with miniscule change in one’s income. Promotions and opportunity comes with the growth of your self-value. Spend at least 15-30 minutes a day to read books; do self-evaluation; and listen to motivational speakers. It could be any kind of activities that would increase one’s self value. Just for 30 minutes a day, it would benefit you and your future.

Vacation + Connection Vacation is a fun time to relieve yourself from pressure and intense feeling in the workplace. Why wouldn’t you make it more purposeful by creating more social connections? The majority of the world’s population wants to be connected; no one likes being by themselves for a long period of time.

The reason Facebook, Youtube, Amazon, and other social media sites had tremendous growth rate in the last decade is because of the need of people to be connected. Think of getting connected to people like being refreshed; adding new juice of creativity to your mind ; and providing alternatives to your perspective.

YOU + EARTH = By : Michelle Tan

Often the things that we’re looking for are just around the corner. The earth that grows our food, the sun that provides us with warmth and winds that regulates our weather. Just like season would only exist with variety, so life would be completed with health. Summer is just around the corner, what are your plans? There are many places to go and things to do, but have you considered going to places that would help your own health? Trails, parks, and recreation centers are available all around the city to for you to reap the benefits. With increasing rise of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, throughout the nation, there must be change. If there is a will to change these statistics, then there must be a way. There are two kinds of benefits that if sown, you can reap. The first aspect is health, both your physical and mental. Through recreational activities, physical activities themselves become fun plus it encourages you to continue these habits. Thus, in turn will reduce obesity and lower risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis. Other health benefits in-

clude boosts in the immune system and longer life expectancy. Mentally, these activities also reduce stress and depression, thus improving the quality of life. Along with health, is the social aspect. When you do these activities with other people such as friends, families, and others in the communities, your relationships with them will grow and strengthen social bonds. There are a numerous amount of activities you can participate in from biking, running, hiking, swimming, basketball, tennis, just to list a few. So go out there and enjoy what the earth can offer you, by taking part in activities at trails, parks, and other centers.

Swimming is also one of the best ways to improve your health. It is the second most popular sport in America, and people report that they enjoy water-based exercised compared to exercising on land. This is due to the ability to exercise longer without increased effort on joint or muscle pain;especially with those who have arthritis. Water-based exercise not only helps those with chronic illness, but also with mental health by improving mood. In addition, postmenopausal women can improve and maintain their bone health.

VS. Postgraduate Degrees By : Vina Hadyanto

Graduation season is over. Some people have given thoughts of what to do, either to continuing their studies to graduate degrees or getting work experience.

You could also have spotted an interesting job position, but you feel like your education

level is not enough. Rising tuition rates and unemployment rates could give students more reasons to choose between work and study, and to set their priorities.

Which path should I take: continue my studies or get work experience? Depending on your field of interest, certain jobs require postgraduate degrees, such as law, dentistry, medicine and pharmacy. Many companies nowadays are demanding for candidates with postgraduate degrees, which mean that people without it might not be able to get jobs that they want. However, having work experience can make you more competitive in getting your job since some companies may demand a more practical approach (for example, a company might be searching for someone who has prior experience in working with the elders, or prior experience in working as a manager). Studying Master’s degrees would widen your knowledge and expertise in a certain field. Granted, continuing studies to attain postgraduate studies might be a lot of work,

But it’s worthwhile when you have a dream to achieve. Keep in mind that some skills can’t be taught in classroom, but rather through experience in real world. You’d have to learn the skills that you need for your job from work experience, and companies would be looking out for those skills. Master’s degree and work experience go hand-in hand in job searching as some companies demand people with experience in both. So, whether you choose to continue your studies or get work experience, it will be beneficial for you as it can make you stand out among others. In the end, your decision will depend on your degree of passion within your field of interest.
