2010 PROSPECTS Owens continued his development in spring drills, and will contend for playing time at either safety position when preseason camp opens. Owens also should continue to play a valuable role on Commodore coverage units. 2009 Played in every game, contributing on coverage units of special teams and as reserve safety, during redshirt freshman campaign... Credited with three total tackles on season, including a pair of solo stops in season-opening win over Western Carolina... Added first forced fumble of Commodore career during the victory over WCU... Also posted a tackle against Georgia Tech. 2008 Owens redshirted during his initial year at Vanderbilt, contributing as a safety on practice scout units. HIGH SCHOOL Senior captain... 2010 PROSPECTS Powell enters preseason camp after showing promise last spring when moved from safety to outside linebacker. A solid contributor on Commodore coverage units, Powell will compete with several others at the linebacker slot left vacant after the graduation of Patrick Benoist. 2009 Played in 11 games as redshirt freshman, contributing on coverage units and as reserve safety... Finished the season with 12 total tackles, including eight unassisted stops... Posted career high of three tackles against both Georgia Tech and Florida... Also credited with a pair of solo tackles in victory over Rice. 2008 Powell did not see game action, using his first year on campus to redshirt. He served as a safety on defensive practice squads. HIGH SCHOOL Senior captain... Three-year starter for school northwest of Tampa... Starting TB for three years; on defense, played DB, safety and LB... Fully healthy, Panu could be a player to watch in preseason camp as the Commodores look to build depth at the inside linebacker position. 2009 Did not play during season, but was one of team's top defensive scouts, working at linebacker and defensive end... During postseason banquet, received the team's Defensive Scout MVP Award. HIGH SCHOOL Earned four letters in football... Three-year starter and team captain, helping Whitefield to its first regional title.... Received All-State and All-Region honors as senior after posting 118 tackles and 19 QB sacks... Team's Defensive MVP as junior and senior... Also lettered in wrestling and track & field... Excellent academic student, National Honor Society member.
