Every item in this issue — in every issue! — has my fingerprints all over it. I’ve scoured flea markets, rummaged through garage sales, and pounded city streets searching for the perfect prop to make a photo shoot extraordinary and, more important, fire the imagination of a bride-to-be. I’ve handcrafted items for tabletops and gowns, and don’t get me started on the art of glittering! But even after countless hours choosing photos and laying out pages — I still love my job. This isn’t the first time Alisha Clark and Luke Walker’s wedding pictures have appeared on these pages, but it’s the first time they’ve actually been the stars of the photos. Alisha and Luke are a much sought-after wedding photography team in Upstate New York. In fact, wedding photography brought them together: The couple met at a photography conference in Los Angeles. That meeting turned into a long-distance relationship as Alisha, who hails from St. Louis, Missouri, and Luke, who’s from Upstate New York, forged a friendship that blossomed into love. Eventually, Luke managed to persuade Alisha to join him in his wedding photography business in New York, and the duo created a romantic and professional relationship that grew to include a booming business and a beautiful daughter named Lillie. Luke plotted a marriage proposal designed to appeal to the photographer in his wife-to-be. With the help of his friend Jessica Claire, a celebrated wedding photographer in her own right, Luke tricked Alisha into a location Jessica had scouted for maximum visual impact. Thinking she was meeting Jessica for lunch and a quick headshot, Alisha was blown away when Luke dropped to one knee in front of a construction site in downtown New York City and asked her to marry him. Jessica caught every moment on film. “It was all about the photos,” Luke jokes.

During the dancing, Alisha sneaked out of the tent and returned with a fabulous 1950's dress and a haircut to match.

Since Alisha and Luke are part of the wedding industry, they had no trouble finding vendors who could help them pull off the wedding they envisioned. And there was no question that they’d be celebrating their wedding in Upstate New York. Alisha and Luke loved the Finger Lakes area and thought it would make a gorgeous wedding backdrop as well as a terrific weekend getaway for their guests. Alisha also wanted to introduce her extended family to the beauty of her adopted home. The wedding itself was all about special moments. During the ceremony, Alisha and Luke presented Lillie with a necklace, including her in their ceremony. “I knew if I gave Mommy a ring, I had to give Lillie something special, too,” Luke says. Luke’s favorite part of the wedding was the fun the couple had hanging out with their friends and family before the sunset wedding ceremony. Most of the guests were spending the weekend at the sprawling house Alisha and Luke had rented, and they spent the summer afternoon swimming, kayaking, and playing frisbee on the lawn. And because Alisha

and Luke are wedding pros, they didn’t even flinch when one of their centerpieces was smashed by an errant gust of wind just 30 minutes before the reception was slated to begin. “We knew we’d have at least one ‘oh crap’ moment — every wedding does,” says Luke. He knew he had hired good people who would solve any problem that blew in, which meant he and Alisha didn’t have to waste time getting stressed about things going wrong. Of course, there were good surprises, too: During the dancing, Alisha sneaked out of the tent and returned with a fabulous 1950's dress and a haircut to match. For Luke, who loved her hair short but had understood why she wanted to grow it longer for their wedding, Alisha’s surprise mid-reception transformation was one of the highlights of their celebration. The biggest surprise, though, was how amazing the whole experience was. Alisha and Luke have participated in a lot of weddings, so they’ve seen firsthand what an emotional experience the day can be. “There’s no way to prepare for how special it’s going to be until you do it,” says Luke. “We spent a decent amount of money and time on our wedding, and honestly, it was the best money we ever spent. It was the best time of our lives. I don’t think it can ever be topped.”

When Stacy Kellogg and Ozgur Ercan say they had a colorful wedding, they’re not kidding. The Rochester, New York, couple used broken pieces of stained glass in five bold colors during their wedding ceremony to symbolize different aspects of their relationship: fuchsia for love, purple for passion, green for growth, orange for happiness, and teal for loyalty. Guests picked up pieces of broken glass (sanded for safety) and held them, wishing the couple joy in their marriage, before returning the glass pieces to a storage basket. Color was a vital component of the wedding celebration for Stacy, a floral designer who’s been making beautiful floral arrangements for more than 14 years. “To pick one or two colors wasn’t really in the cards for us,” says Stacy. “We really wanted to reflect our colorful personalities, so we started with our favorite jewel tones and built the wedding from there.” Stacy and Ozgur were determined to have a wedding that truly reflected their unique personalities. They brainstormed ideas and encouraged their vendors to go wild carrying out their basic concepts. “We told everybody, ‘Do something you have never done before. Have fun with it,’” says Stacy. Stacy and Ozgur put their own creativity to work too: Stacy enlisted her bridal party’s participation in making their own headpieces for the ceremony; Stacy’s mom stitched colorful crystals all over Stacy’s second wedding dress (a surprise gift from her mom and aunts, who knew Stacy had loved the nontraditional dress); and each guest took home a hand-painted favor made by Stacy and Ozgur. Every detail of the wedding, from the structure of the wedding ceremony, to the aisle runners, to the flowers that the bride designed herself, was crafted to reflect the bride and groom’s personalities. Stacy’s creative enthusiasm was such an important part of the wedding that Ozgur quipped, “We’ve been Stacified,” when someone complimented his groomsmen’s colorful ties. The phrase caught on, and it’s become a tagline for Stacy’s floral business.

Since Ozgur is originally from Turkey and most of his family still lives there, Stacy and Ozgur wanted to incorporate Turkish traditions into their ceremony. Stacy and 150 of her closest female friends and family members had a kina before the wedding, a traditional Turkish prenuptial gathering ceremony that represents the bride leaving her parents’ home. Turkish food was a big hit at the wedding reception, and Stacy and Ozgur found a DJ who could spin Turkish tunes as well as American music, keeping the dance floor packed all night.

Stacy found vendors who were as excited about creating something one-of-a-kind as she and Ozgur were, and the end result was everything she’d hoped for. In fact, when she walked into the room where the reception was to take place and saw everything set up, Stacy burst into happy tears. Ozgur, who was with her, says that his favorite part of the whole day was seeing how happy Stacy was at that moment. “I can’t even imagine how you feel right now, knowing you created all this,” he whispered to her. “I’m so proud of you.” Stacy and Ozgur had toyed with the idea of a destination wedding, but a family scheduling conflict made them rethink the destination idea and look in their own backyard. Artisan Works inspired them immediately with its creative approach to art display and wealth of colorful details. It felt like the perfect fit for their personalities and the perfect place to celebrate their wedding. After the celebrations ended, Stacy and Ozgur headed home with a basket of broken glass and plans to create a new art project from it together — proof that their creative wedding celebration really was a harbinger of shared inspiration to come.

When you meet the right girl, it can be hard to wait for the right moment. For David El Hadj, there was no question that Alexis Gorman was the right woman. Less than six months after their first date, David had chosen the ring, sought Alexis’ parents’ blessing, and conspired to have her family present for his proposal. He’d even had the date he planned to ask Alexis to marry him engraved inside her engagement ring: August 30, 2008. On August 29, he caught the train to Loudonville with an unsuspecting Alexis and joined her family for a weekend getaway, starting with dinner and several bottles of wine. At that point, David realized the flaw in his plan: How was he supposed to wait until the next day to ask Alexis to be his wife? In the end, he made it — but just barely. After trying unsuccessfully to fall asleep, David climbed out of bed in his pajamas a little after midnight and found Alexis still chatting in the pool house with her mom and sister. He asked Alexis to come for a walk, and as they moved together toward the rose garden, he dropped to one knee beside the swimming pool and asked Alexis to marry him. Alexis, who was equal parts surprised and delighted, shouted “Yes!” and flung herself into David’s arms. They headed back to the pool house where Alexis’ grinning family had popped open a bottle of champagne to celebrate. As soon as the time difference caught up with them, the couple called David’s family in London to share the happy news.

Alexis’ family home in Loudonville seemed like the perfect spot to celebrate their wedding. Alexis chose a crisp palette of blue and white, her favorite summertime shades, and a recurring motif of two bluebirds as a symbol of happiness and prosperity for the wedding stationery, programs, coasters, and other printed materials. Inspired by many summers on Martha’s Vineyard, Alexis chose vivid blue hydrangeas — one of the Vineyard’s most eye-catching summer blooms — for floral arrangements. For the table centerpieces, Alexis eschewed traditional cut glass and chose white porcelain tree trunk vases instead — their sleek, organic forms added a hint of whimsy to the tables and echoed the beauty of the tree-filled location. Alexis and David had enjoyed their first date in a tapas bar with a ceiling full of sparkling crystal chandeliers, so in a nod to sentiment, Alexis was inspired to give every table a glittering chandelier focal point. “We wanted something that was a little bit enchanted forest and a little bit fairy-tale wonderland,” says Alexis.

Alexis, whose first name, Kathryn, a tribute to her great-grandmother, carried that great-grandmother’s mother-of-pearl Bible down the aisle, along with a handkerchief embroidered with her first initial attached to her bouquet. One of Alexis’ favorite wedding moments was walking through the Cathedral of All Saints in her dotted silk Carolina Herrera gown, seeing David’s face light up as she approached him. After the ceremony, guests toasted the happy couple with Cielo Blue margaritas, the couple’s signature drink, a mix of Cielo Blanco tequila and fresh blueberries inspired by their upcoming honeymoon trip to Punta Mita, Mexico. Guests snagged coasters emblazoned with bluebirds on the front and the recipe on the back so they could replicate the beverage at home. Even the weather cooperated, breaking into dazzling sunlight just before the ceremony after a month of gray skies and rainy days. As Alexis and David joined their guests for cocktails, a vivid rainbow arched across the cerulean blue sky, heralding what seemed like a happy meteorological confirmation of David’s impetuous proposal: Any time is the right time when you’ve found the right person.

As Elizabeth Ferguson looked around The Sagamore Resort’s Shelving Rock Terrace at the friends and family who had come to watch her marry Lawson Stillman Parker II, she knew she was looking at the people who had seen her through both the best and the hardest times of her life. When Elizabeth met Lawson in the summer of 2007, they were both starry-eyed dreamers who found that they had an instant connection. Lawson was managing an indoor swimming pool in Syracuse, New York, while he studied for his law school entrance exams and was ready to begin realizing his dream of becoming a lawyer, while Elizabeth was coaching a high school girls’ swim team that used Lawson’s pool as she worked on finishing a novel. When the two met, it was as though the stars were perfectly aligned: They had their dreams, and they had each other. What could have been more perfect? Life, however, threw Elizabeth and Lawson a curve — a gorgeous, exhausting, sometimes difficult, always extraordinary curve, in the form of a son, Lawson Stillman Parker III, who entered the world on January 31, 2008, turning his parents’ world upside down and making them question their plans for the future. Lawson was engrossed in challenging first-year studies at the Syracuse College of Law, while Elizabeth was working as a legal assistant to help cover the costs for their young family. They were too tired to think about what to make for dinner many nights, much less about planning a wedding. But as they muddled through that first, exhausting year of parenthood, they realized that they were right where they belonged: together. The vision of their shared life began to re-form — it was changed, but just as charged with destiny as it had been when they first met. When Lawson proposed to Elizabeth that Christmas, it was 5:30 in the morning, and they were snuggling with their son, still in their pajamas.

Elizabeth and Lawson wanted to introduce their friends and family to their adopted hometown, so they knew they wanted their wedding celebration to take place in Upstate New York. “We wanted a location that was classy and elegant and very ‘New York,’” says Elizabeth. “The Sagamore fit every requirement.” Elizabeth envisioned a chic, elegant wedding — “kind of Old Hollywood glamour meets New York modern,” she explains. custom lighting, and plenty of Elizabeth’s favorite color, pink. When she saw the reception tent for the first time, she had tears in her eyes. “After the baby was born, I wasn’t sure if we’d ever have the fairy-tale, but our wedding day was completely magical,” she says. “It exceeded my every expectation.” Elizabeth and Lawson also wanted a wedding that included the people who had seen them through the phases of their relationship. They toyed with the idea of a big wedding — after all, their life had brought them a lot to celebrate — but in the end, they decided that a big wedding wouldn’t give them what they wanted: a warm, personal celebration with the people who had supported them through it all and could fully appreciate the joy of the day. In the end, they invited 36 guests to share their wedding day with them. As Elizabeth and her father walked onto The Sagamore’s terrace and began the long walk down the stairs to the wedding site, the hotel guests on the terrace — all complete strangers — began clapping for the bride-to-be. For Elizabeth and Lawson, who had almost given up on the idea of a fairy-tale wedding, the applause was a much-welcomed reminder that real life comes with happy endings, too — sometimes, you just have to work a little harder to get there.

Sara Hallberg had just started to unpack the boxes in her Saratoga Springs home when a winter storm struck, covering the neighborhood – including Sara’s car – in snow. Sara, who had just moved from Cleveland, was totally unprepared for the cold weather and stood shivering by her car, trying to make up her mind what to do. Fortunately, Bentley Boivin spotted his new neighbor and recognized her as a damsel in distress. Grinning, he volunteered to shovel Sara’s car out of the snow, and a storybook romance began. Sara fell in love with Bentley and his two young children, and the feeling was mutual. One warm summer day, Bentley insisted that Sara come with him to check out a fantastic little nursery he’d discovered, and Sara, who was sweaty and dirt-streaked from a morning of gardening, jumped up beside him in the cab of the truck. Sure enough, the little nursery was charming, and Sara and Bentley loaded up the back of the truck with a few new purchases for their garden. Halfway home, the vintage truck broke down – something it had a habit of doing – and after jumping out of the car to check for leaking fluids, Sara turned to Bentley with a question in her eyes. “What do we do?” she asked. He asked her to grab something in the glove compartment, but when Sara opened the metal door, she saw two beautifully restored antique rings. Bentley asked her to marry him, to which a stunned Sara responded, “Are you sure?” before following up with a delighted, “Yes!”

When it came to planning their wedding, Sara and Bentley were determined to have a ceremony with meaning behind it. With that in mind, there was no question that their hometown of Saratoga Springs was the perfect spot to celebrate the beginning of a new stage in their life together. Sara wanted a wedding that captured the playful enchantment of children’s literature. “We wanted a storybook wedding, like the one in the old story ‘Froggy Went a-Courting,’ she says. “Not a fairy-tale wedding, but a storybook wedding — with all the magic, whimsy, and childish charm that suggests,” she says. Sara used a delightfully illustrated version of the story as the inspiration for the wedding’s decorations, flowers, cake, and even her own wedding dress. In keeping with the personal feeling for the wedding, Sara and Bentley enlisted the little nursery they’d visited on the day of his proposal to do the flowers for the wedding. The chef at the Mansion Inn made huge batches of macaroni salad, using Bentley's famous family recipe, to accompany the wedding menu of pulled pork sandwiches, hamburgers, cornbread and Saratoga potato chips. When Sara’s brother began playing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” Sara’s parents met her at the end of the aisle and walked with her arm in arm halfway down the aisle, where they met Bentley’s two children, waiting to escort Sara the rest of the way to their dad. During the ceremony, Sara’s aunt read a letter Sara’s grandmother had written to her grandfather shortly before their own marriage in honor of the absent people Sara and Bentley love. Taking a cue from an old folk tradition, Sara and Bentley also asked three people – a family member, a friend, and a neighbor – to bring an item to bless their married home, and the presentation of those items was one of the most memorable parts of the day for Sara and Bentley. On their way to the reception, the newly married pair, still in their wedding clothes, ducked into their favorite bar for a quick drink, savoring the moment. Drinks, of course, were on the house.

Sean Willcoxon didn’t have to work very hard to win over Jaimee DiGesare’s family. Jaimee’s dad invited him to take his daughter on a date the first time they met, when Sean was catering Mr. DiGesare’s 50th birthday party and Jaimee was the lone single girl among the four DiGesare daughters. “Would you like to take my daughter out?” her dad asked Sean, while Jaimee blushed with embarrassment. Jaimee, on the other hand, took five years to realize that Sean was the guy for her. Though Jaimee did go on a couple of dates with the cute caterer, they didn’t click, and both ended up dating other people. Sean became involved in a serious relationship, eventually getting engaged to another woman, and when Jaimee ran into him while he was setting up for her sister’s engagement party, she was shocked by her own reaction to Sean’s good news. “I told my sisters, ‘Downstairs is the biggest mistake I ever made,’” Jaimee says. “I went to bed crying that night, telling my mom what a big mistake I had made.” Jaimee’s mom encouraged her daughter to pray about the situation, and to Jaimee’s amazed delight, a month later she learned that Sean had called off his engagement. She knew that she and Sean were destined to be together. “I never contacted him, and I did not let our families play matchmaker. My greatest desire was for God to put us together,” says Jaimee. Sure enough, eight months later, they were together again. Eight months after that, Sean proposed, literally sweeping Jaimee off her feet as they stood together on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Newport Beach, California. Sean had planned the proposal as a birthday surprise for Jaimee but ended up popping the question two days early because he just couldn’t wait. “It was the most romantic moment of my life,” says Jaimee. “All I could do was laugh and say how much I loved him.”

Sean had worked with the Mazzone Management Company in Saratoga Springs for 15 years, and Jaimee and Sean are both native New Yorkers, so it was easy to settle on the company’s beautiful Hall of Springs venue as the site for their ceremony and reception. Sean’s years in the wedding business paid off, too, since he had long-standing relationships with vendors who helped them put together their dream wedding. Jaimee’s parents also pitched in with a few fun surprises, including a program of color changes and haze for the reception area that kept things lively for the bride and groom and their guests.

Jaimee and Sean celebrated their wedding with a traditional Christian ceremony, encouraging other married couples to recommit themselves to their relationships as they said their vows to each other. They chose Romans 8:28 as their wedding verse and had it printed in their programs and read during their ceremony. During the breathless pause before Jaimee’s entrance for the ceremony, six violinists rose from their seats and began to play the wedding march. The wedding celebration kept everyone going strong all night long. Drawing from their history together, Jaimee and Sean danced their first dance to “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You” by the Jersey Boys, a song they’d heard together on their first Valentine’s Day date as a couple. They also chose a song by Matthew West after hearing it just one day after their engagement. The dance floor stayed crowded all night, and after dinner a jazz band struck up in a funky lounge area off the main reception site with comfy couches for guests to lounge on. As she danced with her new husband among the crowds of people who loved them both, Jaimee knew her prayers had been answered. She was finally married to the man of her dreams.
