What do these charts really mean?
These charts tell you the flow rate of water after your pump is installed. You can see that as head pressure goes up, gallons per hour goes down. But how do you figure out head pressure? Well, a good estimate is using the Rise (the difference in height from the water level in the pond to its final outlet), and Run (the length of hose you will need to move the water from the pump to the outlet). For each foot of Rise, add 1 foot of head pressure. For every 10 feet of run, add 1 foot of head pressure. Also, for each elbow, add 5 feet of head pressure. To calculate the head pressure in the illustration to the right, add 3 feet for rise, (also known as static head) 2 feet for run (also known as friction head) and 10 feet for the elbows, which equals 15 feet of total dynamic head pressure. 22

Other manufacturers talk about the efficacy of their biological media. How to Calculate Pump Operating Expense You can determine the operating cost of any pump by using this formula: amps x volts divided by 1000 x KWH cost x 24 hours-a-day x 30.4 days-per-month = cost per month. If the pump is rated in watts instead of amps use this formula: watts divided by 1000 x kWh x 24 hours-a-day x 30.4 days-per-month.
