Letter from

thE Editor Welcome to the last Health and Beauty issue of 2009! If like me, you’ve still got plenty to do in readiness for the festive season, thanks for taking the precious time to read our special Christmas issue. With that in mind I hope you find something inside to help ease the stresses and strains of this enjoyable but often exhausting holiday period. First up, we thought you’d enjoy our cover story, an easy to follow guide to a healthy Christmas. We’ve even included a page on hangover cures – not that any of us will overdo things, you understand! Christmas is also a great time to go out with family friends, so what better than a review of the best restaurants in the Surrey area? Still on the food theme this issue not only highlights what our various food cravings really mean, but also attempts to debunk some of the biggest diet myths. Elsewhere we’ve investigated deep tissue massage as part of our A-Z of alternative therapy series, plus we spent some serious time looking into the different types of breast surgery available today. On a completely different tack we asked one of our contributors to take a visit to a kickboxing class – you’ll be surprised by the results! And alongside the usual mix of competitions and product reviews, there’s a round-up of the biggest health and beauty news that’s relevant to you and I. Finally we had a natter with TV presenter and soon-to-be Mrs Eamonn Holmes, Ruth Langsford – she really was a star! All that’s left now is to thanks all our readers and advertisers for your fantastic support throughout the year. On behalf of the Health and Beauty team, I’d like to wish you a safe and happy Christmas and New Year. See you in 2010!

POINTY BRAS MAKE A COMEBACK British retailer John Lewis says demand for pointy bras – made famous by Marilyn Monroe in the 50s – are enjoying a renaissance. Sales of its Fantasie Belle - its bestselling conical bra – are up by 10 per cent. Elsewhere, sales of the Triumph Doreen White are up by 33 per cent compared to the same time last year. A spokesman for John said that, perversely the economic downturn has actually boosted sales of this underwear item. He said: ‘Throughout the last century the trend for feminine pointy shaped bras experienced a renaissance following times of a toughened economy... as women seek to have more fun with fashion as a form of escapism.”

MEGAN FOX NEW ARMANI MODEL The hottest young actress in Hollywood has been named the next face and body of Emporio Armani underwear. Megan Fox, the 23-year-old Transformers star, replaces Victoria Beckham who modelled the brand for the last time this season. Hubby David Beckham has also been replaced and his successor is Real Madrid footballer Cristiano Ronaldo. However, unlike the Beckhams it has been confirmed that Fox and Ronaldo will not appear in the campaign together. Fox will also model for Armani Jeans campaigns.

DEMI MOORE’S AIRBRUSHING CONTROVERSY

Actress Demi Moore has hit back at reports that a recent magazine cover she posed for was airbrushed. And, to prove it, she’s posted the untouched picture on Twitter. Moore is insisting her W magazine cover has not been retouched in the hip area, which is what bloggers and media reports have implied. She wrote on twitter: “Here is the original image people my hips were not touched don’t let these people bulls***t you. You know what is obscene you judging what is my actual shape. Agreed, I am on the skinny side lately. I have no hips.” “I love the pic and can only say I wish I had good lighting like that following me around all day.” But her assertion has not silenced the doubters who have gone so far as to question whether Moore’s body is really her own in the shoot - or whether it has been replaced by that of supermodel Anja Rubik, with Miss Moore’s head superimposed on top.

PEOPLE WHO MEDITATE REGULARLY suffer half as many heart attacks and strokes, and live longer, according to new research. A nine-year study of 201 African Americans suffering from heart disease found that those who practiced transcendental meditation for 20 minutes twice daily suffered 47 per cent fewer heart attacks and strokes. In addition, there was a ‘significant’ drop in blood pressure and stress levels among the meditators. The research, by the Medical College in Wisconsin with the Maharishi University in Iowa, follows many other studies showing the health benefits of meditation.

SUDOKU AS GOOD AS A WORK-OUT Sixty minutes of mental exercises burn an average of 90 calories, according to research by mental agility experts – similar to a light workout. news ULTIMO UNLEASH ‘BOOB JOB BRA’ Ultimo’s Mega Boost “Day to Night Bra” which adds two cup sizes with its removable silicon pouches, is being lauded as the next great thing for women who want to boost their curves, without resorting to surgery. Instead of simply sitting under the bust, silicon pouches are said to mould to the skin to create a ‘natural, authentic rounded shape’. Designed to be worn with or without the pouches, the £24 bra comes in three colours and can be worn in a variety of ways - conventionally, halterneck, one-shouldered, criss-cross and strapless. Ultimo boss Michelle Mone said: “People talk about cleavage being back but it never really went away. The best thing about the new Mega Boost Day to Night Bra is that you can change your cleavage on a whim and it’s completely hassle free. ‘The effect of this bra is both visible and dramatic without the drastic measures of surgery. Any woman even considering breast implants, forget it, this bra will give you the exact same effect.”

LUELLA STOPS TRADING Luella Bartley, the young British designer whose designs have been worn by Kate Moss and Lily Allen, has become the latest fashion casualty of the recession. Bartley’s label, Luella, ceased trading after its ready-to-wear producer closed last month and its main financial backer pulled the plug on any further investment. The brand was unable to fulfill its spring/summer 2010 orders.

10 THINGS ABOUT...

10 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT

MILK The truth behind the nation’s favourite

IT HELPS WEIGHT LOSS

Three to four servings of low-fat dairy foods a day as part of a calorie-controlled diet helps people lose more weight than cutting calories alone on a low-dairy diet. This is thought to be due to calcium in milk which alters the way fat cells function.

WE LOVE MILK

The UK is the seventh largest milk producer in the world and the third largest in Europe. IT MAY REDUCE RISK OF DIABETES

Some studies have found that regular consumption of low fat dairy products can help reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. This may be due to the combined effects of many beneficial nutrients including calcium and magnesium, or the fact that dairy has a low glycaemic index, which helps to control blood sugar levels.

IT HELPS HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE IT’S GOOD FOR TEETH

Calcium and phosphorous present in milk are beneficial for teeth and dentists say, other than water, it is the only drink recommended between meals. IT MAY PREVENT CANCER

Early research indicates that people who regularly eat dairy products have a reduced risk of developing colon cancer.

BUY A COW!

The average cow produces 6,500 litres of milk per year – that’s approximately 20,000 glasses annually or 55 per day. One cow could supply five families with milk for one year in the UK.

More and more studies suggest that consuming two portions of dairy each day (along with five of fruits and vegetables as part of a low salt diet) can reduce high blood pressure in adults and children.

IT’S ESSENTIAL FOR BONE GROWTH

Milk and dairy products are providers of calcium, phosphorous, magnesium and protein which are all essential for healthy bone development.

IT IS NOT FULL OF FAT

There is far less fat in milk than many people think. Whole-milk contains 3.9 per cent, semi-skimmed 1.7 per cent and skimmed just 0.3 per cent. IT PROMOTES HEALTHY SKIN

Milk naturally contains Vitamins A and D which helps to make your skin soft and strong. Moreover, if you bathe in milk, beta hydroxy acids which are present in various skincare products, naturally exfoliate dead cells. December 2009 Health & Beauty 13

magine not having to shave again, or having to schedule waxing before holidays and important nights out. Imagine being able to shift those unsightly blemishes you normally have to cover up with make-up. Intense Pulse Light (IPL) uses rapidly replacing lasers as a safer, more effective and less painful method of hair removal and skin rejuvenation. The effectiveness of the treatment depends to a large extent on the type of machine used and the Energist ULTRA Plus™ is at the top of its class. What makes thIs system specIal?

As technology has progressed, research

RevolutionaRy eneRgist ultRa Plus iPl system is now available in suRRey

has shown that intense pulsed light units – and in particular Variable Pulsed Light Systems – are regularly producing better results than the laser systems originally available. The ULTRA Plus™ system is designed in such a way that a greater range of hair and skin types can be safely and effectively treated than was previously possible. hoW does It Work?

Depending upon the treatment being carried out, light emitted from the ULTRA Plus™ System is preferentially absorbed by the specific structure in the skin. For hair removal, the melanin in the hair absorbs this light and is heated

to a temperature that permanently inhibits the hair growth. For skin rejuvenation, various structures can absorb the light and repair the damage caused by ageing and the sun. What condItIons can be treated?

Unwanted hair can be removed from all parts of the body and many skin complaints caused by ageing and sun damage – these include redness, rosacea, age spots, freckles, pigment changes, skin texture and fine lines. Who can be treated and hoW much does It cost?

This is an effective treatment for men and women, and for most hair and skin types. A consultation will provide you with a complete treatment programme. As there are little or no visible side-effects, procedures can be performed quickly and safely. Prices typically start at £250 for a course of hair removal treatments. • Energist ULTRA Plus is available at Helius Beauty www.heliusbeauty.com

PRODUCT REVIEW

Goodbye tweezers! H&B READER AVRIL, TRIED OUT PERMANENT EYE-BROW MAKE-UP AND WAS AMAZED BY THE RESULTS I never had beautiful brows. They were really wide, growing in all different directions and odd shaped. I looked like the evil character in a stage play! My attempts at getting a more attractive look seemed hopeless as the therapists I visited seemed not to know what to do with my eyebrows and always ended up making them too thin for my face. A good friend, fashionista and trendsetter always had perfect brows so I asked about her therapist. Here was the shock, it was permanent makeup. Her therapist was more like a brow designer and, quite frankly, she sounded like the answer to my problem. I booked an appointment to see Troy Bates from West End, in Woking and there began the journey. First up the consultation where we discussed whether permanent makeup was appropriate for me (it’s like a

tattoo however it’s not as abrasive as it doesn’t go as deep – only about 2mm), looked at different looks, hairstroke and soft shaded, filled in forms and did patch tests for both pigment and anaesthetic. I opted for soft shaded. She then waxed away the worst of my villainous character look – bearing in mind I did not want them thin – and this allowed her to also see the areas that needed filling in. Troy-Ann applied anaesthetic. Hair, shoes and sleeves were covered, aprons for both of us, and then the procedure started. Although uncomfortable it certainly wasn’t painful and took barely anytime at all – well at least it felt that way. Afterwards I was ecstatic to discover my beautiful new brows. Thanks to Troy, I won’t be getting a role as an evil pantomine villain anytime soon! Avril

FESTIVE not feasting COVER STORY

HOW TO HAVE A HEALTHY CHRISTMAS

O

verindulgence during the Christmas season is as traditional as mince pie and brandy butter, but for those of us who no longer want to wake up five pounds heavier on December 27th, there are a few simple steps to make this holiday more about the festive and less about the feasting. As far back as the 14th Century, Christmas was seen as a time for merriment and an excuse to hold banquets, drink ale and generally behave badly. For example, in 1377 King Richard hosted a Christmas feast at which 28 Oxen and 300 sheep were eaten, so today suddenly that extra portion of trifle doesn’t seem so bad! However for many of us, Christmas is a pivotal time of the year as bad habits indulged over the festive period can provide a springboard for problems later in the year. So how do you have an enjoyable Chrimbo without coming across as a veritable Ebenezer Scrooge?

❄ ❄

START EARLY

Preparing your body for the festive season is as important as basting the turkey so instead of worrying about how much you’ll eat and drink over Christmas, start thinking about the holiday period as a way to kick start a healthy lifestyle. Don’t sit 16 Health & Beauty December 2009

at home and order all your gifts online with a glass of wine. Wrap up warm and take a walk around the shops to find those perfect pressies. A two hour shopping spree burns around 420 calories, gets you out and about in the fresh air, supports local business and carrying bags will help tone your arms and legs. Bonus! OUT AND ABOUT

Ice skating has enjoyed a real revival in the past few years and now there are plenty of outdoor and indoor rinks across the country. Why not lace up those boots? It is a great way to stay fit whilst allowing you and your family to embrace the festive spirit. Even if overtly physical exercise isn’t your thing, focus on the simple things. Make buying the Christmas tree an adventure. Walk to your nearest garden centre and the whole family can help carry the tree home and keep fit at the same time.

DON’T STRESS ABOUT THE MEAL

If you are hosting Christmas day, prepare, prepare, prepare. The last thing you want to be doing on the day is carefully wrapping bacon around chipolatas, so do as much as you can the week before. Lay the table the night before and prepare the little extras like gravy, sauces and condiments. Christmas should be fun – not a source of unhealthy anxiety. TAKE TIME TO RELAX

It might sound outside the realms of possibility but make sure you get a bit of time to yourself, even if it is simply a hot bath on Christmas Eve to relax and prepare for the day ahead. PARTIES

These days the lure of Christmas parties start around about the middle of November so chances are you have already attended a few. However the golden rule for not stuffing your face with canapés is eat before you go. Try to have a later lunch on the day of the party and make sure it is filling (ideally with slow release good carbs). A baked potato with beans and a large side salad is a great option for party days. Drink lots of water in advance and

open between the turkey and trifle? Having a break of about 20 minutes between courses will allow your body to register the food you’ve consumed and will give you an accurate gauge as to how full you are. Often, by the time dessert arrives at the table you will be feeling pleasantly full and happy to decline that bowl of Christmas pud. THE POST-LUNCH SLUMP

then have a snack just before you leave. A banana and a handful of nuts and seeds will fill you up and stop you heading straight for the first Vol-au-vent you see. Once you are at the party, try to stick to champagne, the least calorific of party drinks, and confine yourself to one type of alcohol as this will lessen the effects the next morning. Also try to alternate water and alcohol to keep your body hydrated.

THE BIG DAY

Firstly, don’t buy more than you need. The shops are only closed for one day of the year so instead of stocking the cupboards full of treats to see you through till the New Year just concentrate on what you and your family will be eating on December 25th. Secondly, eat breakfast. Too often we are stressed about the big lunch event and forget the most important meal which, ironically, can help us eat less during the rest of the day. Start off with a bowl of porridge topped with fruit or muesli and banana. Eating a healthy and filling breakfast will kick-start your metabolism as well as keep you satisfied until lunch and stop you “grazing”. Try to avoid that glass of champagne if you can but if not, at least mix it with orange juice to help you towards your five a day. If you are serving lunch then you are in control of what’s on offer. Prepare

only light starters such as Parma ham and melon or smoked salmon or, just serve a few canapés. For the main course ensure there is a rainbow of vegetables on offer, make them the largest portion of food on your plate and try not to have more than a few slices of meat. Turkey keeps very well and can be turned into a host of different dishes so don’t feel as though you have to eat it all in one go. Drink water throughout the day, and before you eat lunch, as this will keep hunger at bay. Often we mistake hunger pangs for thirst. Eat slowly, chew properly and try to savour your food, after all a lot of preparation has gone into this meal, it would be a shame if it was all gone in a matter of minutes. Whether you are hosting or a guest, help clear the table when people are finished. This will not only get you up and about, it will also stop you sitting at the table and picking at leftovers. Dessert is, well let’s face it, a dieter’s sworn enemy. So have something nice and don’t beat yourself up about it. However, why not stagger present opening on Christmas day and hold a gift back until lunchtime and give everyone something to

Don’t allow it to happen! Take the whole family out for a long walk so that everyone feels pleasantly tired instead of full to bursting. And ration the TV. Let’s face it, do you really need to watch the Only Fools and Horses Christmas special for the fifth year in a row? Instead, play some games that get everyone up off the sofa and on to their feet (and you don’t need a Wii to achieve that). Charades, Twister and even Pictionary are great games that involve some physical activity. Even better, family Karaoke can get everyone up for a bit of a dance. DINNER

Keep it light. There is plenty of time to have cold turkey and mashed potatoes the following day. On Christmas evening why not go for a simple meal like soup or a sandwich? AND FINALLY… SLEEP

We know how important it is so get to bed at a decent time so you wake up refreshed and ready to do the whole thing over again come Boxing Day. Overall, Christmas is indeed the season of excess but it is possible to eat healthily and maintain a healthy(ish) lifestyle – it just takes a bit of extra effort and thought. The key is to treat eating like it is any other day of the year. Don’t go crazy and know your limits. If you do go for that extra mince pie then don’t feel guilty, but the perfect present to yourself is to know when to stop.

HANGOVER HAD ONE (OR FIVE) TOO MANY? HERE’S A FEW TIPS TO MAKE THE MORNING AFTER THE NIGHT BEFORE A LITTLE MORE BEARABLE…

D

espite our best intentions, Christmas is the time of year when our consumption of alcohol inevitably goes up – whether it be at an office party, a family gathering or simply enjoying bottle of wine in front of a festive movie. But with this comes the spectre of the dreaded hangover which, ranging in intensity, often includes a banging headache, sickness, dizziness, dehydration, mild diarrhoea, tiredness and weakness. It can also leave you struggling to concentrate, irritable and sensitive to light for a prolonged period after your last drink. So how to avoid a hangover and treat the symptoms if you do over-imbibe?

20 Health & Beauty December 2009

WATCH WHAT YOU DRINK

The principal cause of a hangover is ethanol – a toxic chemical that works in the body as a diuretic, causing the headache, dry mouth, dizziness and nausea. Your hangover eases as the body turns the ethanol into a less poisonous substance. Dark drinks like red wine contain “congeners” which irritate blood vessels and tissue in the brain and can make symptoms worse. So does mixing drinks. BE SENSIBLE

The Government recommends that men should not regularly drink more than three to four units a day, and women not more than two to three. A good way to try and stay within these limits is to consume plenty of water or soft drinks in between alcoholic beverages. And remember never drink on an empty stomach. Before you go out, have a meal that includes carbohydrates (such as pasta or rice) or fats. The food will help slow down the body’s absorption of alcohol.

THE MORNING AFTER

The main problems with being hungover comes from being dehydrated so drink as much water as you can before hitting the sack and continue to do so the next day. Paracetamol-based pain killers are usually preferable, as aspirin may further irritate the stomach and increase nausea and sickness. “Hair of the dog” doesn’t help because, aside from being an unhealthy cycle to enter into, it just delays the appearance of symptoms until the alcohol wears off again. Non vegetarians may even want to try the classic “bacon sarnie” once your stomach has settled down – perhaps with the help of an antacid. Bread is high in carbohydrates and bacon is full of protein, which breaks down into the amino acids that your body needs. GIVE YOUR BODY A BREAK

If you have had a heavy drinking session, hungover or not, doctors advise that you allow 48 hours to pass before you drink any more alcohol, in order to give your body tissues time to recover.

What did you have for breakfast today? Chances are, like most people, you have either a simple carbohydrate ‘meal’ of toast or cereal, or you skip breakfast entirely (usually leading to mid-morning snacking). Both of these approaches lead to rapid increases in blood sugar and insulin, carbohydrate cravings (snacking) and a drop in energy.

Body and S

ometimes I just love my friends! Knowing that as the years trickle by, I find less and less reason to celebrate my birthday, one such pal decided to treat me to a day at a spa – and I am so glad she did‌ Upon entering the famous Nirvana spa in Wokingham we were welcomed by a friendly receptionist who pointed us in the direction of the changing rooms, having already handed us two towels, a lovely white robe and a welcome pack. She also informed us that someone would be waiting for us in the Garden Cafe. After changing we followed directions down the corridor where we met a member of staff (again friendly) who explained exactly how to find our way round the spa, our plan of scheduled treatment we were

soul A luxurious spA experience is the perfect tonic for the stresses of everydAy life having that day and information about everything in our package. So after having a cup of tea we decided to try out the Ocean Room, where the powerful water and air jets tended to my weary and aching muscles, from pummeling my lower back to tickling my sensitive calves. This was great fun and very therapeutic. There are also two plunge pools to one

side, should we have felt the need. Now it was time for our first treatment. We had opted for the Celestial Pure Indulgence Body Massage, which I can promise really is as good as it sounds. The therapy room was warm and tranquil with soft background music which made me feel like I was in my own little world. The full body massage felt fantastic.

PRODUCT REVIEW The therapist then applied Celestial Comfort Relaxing Oil to my body before finishing with a lovely head massage. In this she used Celestial Conditioning Mineral Hair and Scalp Mud – a treat for tired and tender tresses. I wanted to give my hair a little longer to soak up the nutrients so instead of jumping straight into the pool we went for a walk around to discover the rest of what Nirvana had to offer. First of all we picked out a few goodies from the gift shop. The Coconut Ice Cream Body Lotion and Coconut Ice Cream Body Scrum are something that I now swear by and use religiously. Next up was the menthol infused Aroma Steam Room, leaving me feeling completely refreshed… especially after the freezing cold Monsoon Showers. All this made me hungry, so after rinsing my hair, we wandered back to the Garden Cafe to enjoy a healthy but deliciously filling salad and selection of cold meats. By the time we had finished eating and sat on the loungers around the pool

for half an hour it was time for our next treatment. Deciding to forgo the champagne reception (was I mad?) we arrived for our flotation treatment – the part of the day I had been looking forward to all day. Apparently 45 minutes in the Dead Sea flotation pool is equivalent to a whole night’s sleep, so for people like myself who always fail to get those eight hours a night, this was perfect. Nirvana is the only place in Britain that contains these specific types of pools as they import the salt from the Dead Sea which people have been using for healthy skin even since the days of Cleopatra. Initially myself, my friend and another lady sat down for our 15 minute induction with a member of the team who talked us through the treatment. There are several benefits to the flotation experience – namely stress and pain relief plus healthier skin – and I can testify that I benefited from all of them. We were asked to slowly advance into the training pool although walking is quite difficult, it makes you feel weightless – almost like you are defying

gravity. The main theory behind doing this introduction was to make sure we felt safe and were able to manoeuvre properly whilst in the main pool. Now the time had come to go into the next Celestial Pool room. We walked through to a huge domed room which was dark and dreamy with twinkling lights in the ceiling. It was so warm and cosy that we couldn’t wait to lie back and enjoy the natural current which moved all three of us in an anticlockwise direction. The assistant left us alone in the room (there are cameras if you have need of assistance) and within five or ten minutes I soon found myself in a dream-like state. Bliss. But before I knew it, time had passed so quickly and the lights slowly became brighter. Personally, I was so relaxed I could have stayed in there longer but we were directed towards the showers where they gave us some lovely treatments to try out. This did encourage me to spend slightly more than I initially would have but I reckoned it was worth the extravagance. After all, as the adverts say, “I’m worth it”! All in all, my birthday treat was just what the doctor ordered – so much so I won’t be waiting another year to enjoy the Nirvana Spa experience. I went home feeling amazingly refreshed, smooth & smelling great. I’ll be back very soon...that’s a no brainer! H&B’s Annie Hogan visited the Nirvana Spa in Wokingham

shaping up

your hair A simple guide to choosing the best hairstyle for your face

h

air styling is a multi-million pound business and all to often it’s easy to become bamboozled by the myriad of options open to you. Should you go long or short? Curly or straight? A fringe or a parting? Texture or a fine cut? One way of negotiating this minefield is to clearly identify

your face shape and then choose a hairstyle that best suits. With a few basic rules in place, depending on whether you have a square, round, oval, long or heart-shaped face (and remember – be honest when measuring or looking in the mirror!) you can communicate best to your stylist where you want your hair to go.

ThE rounD FaCE

A round face is as wide as it is long with rounded edges. The nose is the center guide. With a fuller shape aim for balance so keep the face free from fringes and very choppy bangs. Having a large volume of hair surrounding your face will only exacerbate the roundness of the features. your CElEbriTy lookalikEs: Catherine Zeta Jones, Cameron Diaz

ThE sQuarE FaCE

The square face shape is as wide as it is long and has strong angles. This is characterised by a strong, welldefined jaw and as such you will probably need to opt for a hairstyle that takes some attention away from this feature. Go for textures and layers, choppy and uneven ends that frame the face and also choose curls, curls, curls. Avoid hairstyles that end on the jawline as this will accentuate that area. your CElEbriTy lookalikEs: Hilary Swank, Jennifer Aniston

28 Health & Beauty December 2009

THE OVAL FACE

If you are lucky enough to be blessed with an oval face – good news, yours is the easiest to find a hairstyle to match. Both long and short are an option, so too sexy bobs and loose curls, but try to avoid too much height. Short layers can make your face appear long. If your hair is thick or curly, avoid a blunt cut. YOUR CELEBRITY LOOKALIKES: Cindy Crawford, Gwyneth Paltrow

THE LONG FACE

Long faces are described as oblong-long and narrow. Try to choose hairstyles that complement rather than clash with your bone structure, so avoid overly plain, straight lines. Opt for a side rather than a centre parting as these can make the face seem longer. Soft curls are always a great idea. YOUR CELEBRITY LOOKALIKES: Penelope Cruz, Liv Tyler

WHAT FACE SHAPE ARE YOU? ➤ Measure across the top of your cheekbones at the widest point ➤ Measure across your forehead at the widest point ➤ Measure across your jaw line at the widest point ➤ Measure from the edge of your hairline to the bottom of your chin Once you’ve done that, use those measurements to fit yourself into one of the categories below: Square: As wide as you are long. Round: Length measurement more or less matches your width measurement. Both your forehead and jaw width should be narrower than the cheekbone width. Oval: Length is equal to one and a half times your width. Long: Oblong, or rectangle is significantly longer than it is wide. Heart: Much narrower at the jaw line than at the cheekbones or forehead.

THE HEART-SHAPED FACE

The heart-shaped face is wide in the eye and cheekbone area with a narrow or pointy chin. Hairstyles can be selected to either minimise the general wideness of the heart shaped face or help to balance the generally prominent chin. A side swept feathered or texturised bang style is a great look as it focuses attention on the eyes and cheekbones. A heart shaped face can also usually carry off full bangs cut straight across the face. Long or short, full bangs can look really great for a heart shape. YOUR CELEBRITY LOOKALIKES: Michelle Pfeiffer, Victoria Beckham

DEFENCE WHY MARTIAL ARTS CLASSES ARE A VIABLE WAY TO IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH AS WELL AS SAFETY

A

s a fitness instructor I know the fantastic results martial arts provides. But while I was clear on the benefits, I have never been clear on where to start. There are dozens of disciplines and hundreds of schools to choose from and the last time I googled some classes, I was totally bemused at the confusing array of options out there. However, the GBMAA (Great Britain Martial Arts Association) is there to help and offers classes all over the South East. The GBMAA is the UK’s fastest growing multi-style martial arts governing body. It also has the widest range of

age-specific martial arts courses in the country, as well as separate basic and advanced programmes and even ladiesonly classes. Unlike the majority of martial arts clubs and schools that work on a classby-class basis, the GBMAA operate on an age-specific course structure, with separate programmes for all age groups and levels of skill. They are also used to set the standards for hundreds of smaller clubs throughout Great Britain. With academies all over the South East, including Cobham, Leatherhead, Epsom and Surbiton, there’s a location and class out there for everyone. Their website is full of impressive claims; the most experienced teachers in the country and fantastic martial arts programmes over more than ten different disciplines, including kickboxing, kung fu, mixed

martial arts and martial gymnastics. However, despite the range of disciplines on offer, each one is explained clearly and I knew straight away which was right for me; kickboxing – the style the GBMAA specialise in. So I went along to the ladies-only class at the Cobham academy, held every Monday and Wednesday mornings in a very well-equipped studio just off the high street. I was petrified I’d be greeted by fearsome, super-aggressive uber women but I was relieved to find my classmates were welcoming and friendly and above all, looked extremely fit. Our instructor, Michael Page, is a multi world champion and towering inferno of a man. So I was surprised to learn he was just 22, bearing in mind

MARTIAL ARTS STYLES… and what they mean for you KICKBOXING The syllabus covers a wide range of hand, leg and jumping techniques, including combinations, padwork, set-pieces and sparring (optional). Split into a beginners programme, designed to introduce you to the martial arts, and an advanced programme that will take you all the way up to Black

Belt and beyond, the GBMAA’s kickboxing courses can be easily tailored to suit your needs. KUNG FU Lau Gar is a fantastic training tool that focuses on the core aspects of the martial arts, including core strength, isometric strength and plyometric power output, as well as a strong

emphasis on correct and effective technique. his maturity, enthusiasm and ability to not just perform but teach and break down each move. The class was an hour long and in that time we did a gruelling ten-minute warm-up of circuit training then a fabulous ten-minute stretch. What I did notice was that the majority of the more experienced women, no matter their age, were very supple. They told me later that their flexibility was nothing to do with genes but more to do with the superb stretching techniques they had learnt in class. The rest of the session was taken up with self defence techniques, which were simple to learn yet very effective and immediately gave me more confidence. At the end of the class I felt

HOW TO STAY MOTIVATED WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGHER…

W

inter’s here and the temptation for many of us is to simply close the curtains, put another log on the fire and hibernate until the spring. But these feel-bad sensations don’t have to rule the day so here are the key ways to banish the winter exercise blues. MIND GAMES

It’s really important to start with a positive mental attitude – when your mind is focused, your body is much more likely to follow. Be ready to give 100 per cent of yourself each time you exercise. It’s not how many of each exercise that matters; it’s doing each one to the best of your ability. Better to do ten perfectly, improving with each repetition, than 20 sloppily. START SLOWLY

The start-up stage of a progressive programme is important. It shouldn’t be too hard at the beginning as you build muscle tone and start to speed your metabolism up. Focus on form at this stage and work to your ability and capability. Remember that it’s not about other people, it’s about what you can manage. THE GREAT OUTDOORS

It’s proven that people who exercise 32 Health & Beauty December 2009

outdoors are less likely to renege on their regime. Having natural beauty to look at and admire can be a great motivator. Here in Surrey there are some fantastic places to train; from parks to playing fields, woodland to heaths. Make the most of the great outdoors by making it your own adventure playground. TRAIN WITH OTHERS

As you move forward with your training programme try and ensure that there is someone training with you; it’s far easier if you are with someone of similar ability so you can motivate each other. Group training also works as camaraderie and collective feeling of achievement just adds to the buzz at each and every session WATCH YOUR DIET

Mineral supplements work to keep sugar cravings at bay and healthy eating fuels the body, working with the exercise programme not against it. Try eating more protein as your training kicks in and remember not to go too

long without food, especially after training when the body needs to get some fuel back in. And make sure you drink plenty of water. It flushes out the toxins and helps speed up your metabolism. SET TARGETS

For some people, sticking a picture of the shape they’d like to be on the fridge works wonders for their motivation. Or perhaps it’s a personal mantra that helps to keep you going – “I will lose the baby weight”. MIX IT UP

Variety is the spice of training so make sure that you are giving all the muscle groups a workout as each variant provides a rest for other muscle groups as well as a workout for the targeted group. A combination of cardio, resistance work, core strength, short distance running and calisthenics is usually the right balance. Thanks to Kate Staples’ for help with this feature. Her Adventure Boot Camps run year-round across Surrey and cater for women of all shapes, sizes and fitness levels. For details see www.fitnesscamps.co.uk or call 01932 863 240.

FOOD CRAVINGS

LISTEN TO YOUR BODY What food cravings really mean e are all aware that the overwhelming compulsion to consume often strange types of food can be a by-product of pregnancy. Marmite and peanut butter sandwiches for example, are, shall we say, a very “individual” dietary selection prompted by impending motherhood. However, for those of us who do not have the excuse of being with child, cravings for fast foods and unhealthy snacks are a serious problem. Turning to crisps, chocolate, pizza and the like are turning us into a nation constantly battling the bulge. But why the cravings? According to nutritionist Sally Brightmore a desire to eat the wrong types of food is not just a self-control issue – instead it could just be your body’s way of telling you that you are deficient in certain minerals and vitamins. She says: “For sure we live in a consumption culture where food is readily available, quickly and relatively cheaply, so refusing temptation isn’t always easy.” “But craving certain foods can often

just be a message from your body saying, ‘I need salt, protein, carbohydrates, whatever’. Your brain interprets this and transforms this into a desire for a quick fix.” “By listening to your body and understanding what the sensations really mean, you can respond accordingly and avoid overindulging in the wrong food stuffs.” GUIDE TO YOUR CRAVINGS

CRAVING: Burgers, chips, pizza and other takeaways YOUR BODY NEEDS: Salt HEALTHY ALTERNATIVE Sushi

CRAVING Chocolate YOUR BODY NEEDS Magnesium HEALTHY ALTERNATIVE Nuts, seeds and wholegrain CRAVING Coffee or caffeine-rich drinks YOUR BODY NEEDS Iron HEALTHY ALTERNATIVE Raw broccoli or dried fruit CRAVING Over-done foods YOUR BODY NEEDS Carbon HEALTHY ALTERNATIVE Fresh fruits

CRAVING Bread and crisps YOUR BODY NEEDS Protein (as this takes longer to digest) HEALTHY ALTERNATIVE Fish or chicken

TIPS FOR CONTROLLING YOUR APPETITE

➤ Use smaller plates and bowls so that your brain thinks that a finished serving (although smaller) is the same as a full stomach.

➤ Drink plenty of water between meals as you may mistake thirst for hunger pangs. ➤ Eat slowly. Taking your time allows your brain the chance to send messages to your stomach saying you’ve had enough.

➤ Eat your biggest meals at breakfast and lunch, when digestion is at its peak. ➤ Sleep well, as tiredness leads to cravings for high-energy foods. ➤ Avoid junk food as most do not contain enough nutrients to sate your “true” appetite.

AND THE THE OLD FAVOURITES… FOR CHOCAHOLICS Chocolate is most women’s best friend and it is indeed a lovely comforting treat. It symbolises love and gratitude, making it a top fantasy food on a psychological level – but as with everything, moderation is the key. Other than eating substitute magnesium-rich fruits, try switching to only having chocolate when you’re already full. Researchers at University College London found that subjects told to eat chocolate when not hungry found their cravings for it became weaker. Eating it on an empty stomach made their cravings become stronger. FOR LOVERS OF SWEETS If you crave sweets it is most likely that your body is seeking the lift in energy level that comes with their consumption. However, this can be a vicious circle as a rapid rise in blood glucose followed by a rapid fall often stimulates a further round of craving. One solution is to ensure you never eat sweets on an empty stomach base your diet largely around lower glycaemic carbohydrates like grainy bread, porridge and wholewheat pasta, which are digested slowly and help smooth out blood sugar fluctuations. FOR LOVERS OF CHIPS This may mean you are deficient in salt so go for naturally lower fat versions, which have far fewer calories. Also make your own home-made chips from chunkily cut potatoes lightly brushed with oil. Or bake slices of bread and serve with a dip.

A TO Z: DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE

HANDS AS OUR A-Z OF ALTERNATIVE THERAPY CONTINUES, THIS MONTH WE INVESTIGATE DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE

F

or many of us, having a massage is something of a luxury, a rare treat we may consider as part of a pampering day at a health farm or spa. However, more and more people are turning to a specific form of massage as a bona fide medical treatment for a variety of ailments. Deep tissue massage is a massage technique that focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissues. It uses slower and firmer strokes and pressure than other treatments – deep finger pressure that concentrates on particular areas, and follows or goes across the fibres of

muscles and tendons. The purpose is to ‘unstick’ the fibres of a muscle while releasing deeply-held patterns of tension, removing toxins while relaxing and soothing the muscle by stimulating blood flow and therefore oxygen distribution. A lack of proper oxygen can lead to a build up of toxins leaving a person in chronic pain. HOW DOES DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE WORK?

When there is chronic muscle tension or injury, there are usually bands of painful, rigid tissue in muscles, tendons,

and ligaments. These can block circulation and cause pain, limited movement, and inflammation. Deep tissue massage works by physically breaking down this tissue to relieve pain and restore normal movement. To do this, the massage therapist often uses direct deep pressure or friction applied across the grain of the muscles. WHAT CONDITIONS IS DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE USED FOR?

Unlike classic massage therapy, which is used for relaxation, deep tissue December 2009 Health & Beauty 37

A TO Z: DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE

massage usually focuses on a specific problem, such as: ➤ Chronic pain ➤ Limited mobility ➤ Recovery from injuries ➤ Repetitive strain injury ➤ Postural problems ➤ Osteoarthritis pain (in some cases) ➤ Fibromyalgia ➤ Muscle tension or spasm If you are experiencing headaches and overall body pain as a result of muscular issues this type of therapy may help you as well. Even sitting at a computer day after day can lead to muscle damage from the strain of holding a position for too long. HOW TO GET STARTED…

You need to make sure that you give the therapist as much information as you can. The therapist will talk to you about any special problems you have, how an injury or muscle strain has improved or got worse, your lifestyle, exercise routine, diet and so on, so they know how best to help you. 38 Health & Beauty December 2009

HOW DO I PREPARE FOR MY DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE SESSION?

As with any massage, it’s a good idea to avoid big meals and alcohol beforehand. You should also drink plenty of water before and after the massage. Wear loose fitting clothing and try to arrive five or ten minutes early so you can ease into the whole experience, rather than rushing around. HOW LONG WILL IT LAST?

The length of a deep-tissue massage session or course will vary depending on what you need. A session is unlikely to last more than an hour, and a course will probably include about six sessions spaced over a few weeks or months. WILL THE TREATMENT HURT?

At certain points during the massage, most people find there is usually some

discomfort and pain. It is important to tell the massage therapist when things hurt and if any soreness or pain you experience is outside your comfort range. There is usually some stiffness or pain after a deep tissue massage, but it should subside within a day or so. AND AFTERWARDS?

If you can, go for a sauna or steam bath after your massage as this will soothe and warm the muscles and boost the effectiveness of the treatment. Again, remember to drink plenty of water. IS IT FOR EVERYONE?

In a word “no”. Deep tissue massage is not advised for people who are pregnant, have a history of heart or respiratory problems, have had surgery recently, are prone to blood clots, have an infectious skin disease or open

DID YOU KNOW?

According to the August 2005 issue of Consumer Reports magazine, 34,000 people ranked deep tissue massage more effective in relieving osteoarthritis pain than physical therapy, exercise, prescription medications, chiropractic, acupuncture, diet, glucosamine and over-the-counter drugs.

wounds or who have acute or long-term mental health problems. Individuals who have osteoporosis, problems with their joints or heart disease should always consult a doctor before embarking on this treatment. WHERE TO SIGN UP FOR DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE?

Look around for a reputable spa. Ask for recommendations from friends or family. Generally a spa that provides quality Swedish massage can be trusted with deep tissue therapy as well. Use common sense when you go for the first time. Look around at the quality of the establishment and ask any questions you may have. A qualified therapist will answer your questions happily and explain the ins and out of what they are doing and what you can expect.

CUPPING Famously endorsed by actress Gwyneth Paltrow, this traditional Chinese medicine practice temporarily leaves raised, red cupshaped marks on your skin. A heated cup is placed on your body and a vacuum is created which sucks up your skin. This suction drains excess fluids and toxins from the muscle tissue, stimulates the nervous system, and brings blood flow to your muscles and skin. TRIGGER POINT THERAPY This treatment puts pressure on certain trigger points, temporarily stopping blood flow to a particular part of the body, and then releasing it, flooding that body part with fresh blood. This treatment kick-starts your

circulation as it pours and pumps fresh oxygen around your body. CROSS-FIBRE FRICTION This specialised massage treatment is used to treat chronic muscular tension, working across the fibres of the muscles. MYOFASCIAL RELEASE Also known as connective tissue massage, myofascial release is a stretching technique that alleviates tension and therefore pain deep in the body. It is used by physiotherapists to treat patients with some soft tissue problems. It is also called “connective tissue massage.

breast surgery: the facts EvErything you nEEd to know bEforE going undEr thE scalpEl

t

he female breast can be considered the most important visual symbol of femininity. In general, women dislike their breasts to be too small, too large, droopy or markedly asymmetric in size or shape. Breast size that is out of proportion to hip size can make it difficult to find clothing that fits comfortably. So what procedures are on offer and what do they entail? breast augmentation

If the breasts have always been small, or have lost volume after pregnancy and breast feeding, or there is mild asymmetry then breast implants may be a solution. Breast augmentation is the commonest cosmetic procedure in the UK, with about 25,000 operations being carried out each year. The incision is most commonly made in the crease beneath the breast, although some surgeons prefer an incision around the areola (nipple) or less commonly in the axilla. A pocket is then made beneath the breast or the muscle for placement of the implant. The implants used in the UK are mostly silicone although alternatives such as saline are available. It has been shown conclusively that silicone implants do not lead to any diseases in the body or cause cancer. The commonest problem is hardening around the implants which occurs in about 42 Health & Beauty December 2009

five per cent of cases. Also the implants can leak or rupture. If so, the silicone doesn’t travel round the body – it stays within the capsule of scar-like tissue that surrounds the prosthesis. mastoplexy

A common problem after pregnancy and breast feeding, particularly with a larger bust, is drooping of the breasts (ptosis). Mild droop can be disguised by a good fitting and uplifting bra. Otherwise surgery (mastopexy) may be indicated. As scarring is the main downside

of this operation, then, except for the very large drooping breast, the best option is a minimal scar (vertical scar) mastopexy. This leaves a scar around the nipple and straight down like a lollipop. The nipple is not removed from the breast but lifted up into a more normal position. Sensation in the nipple may be affected after surgery, but breast feeding can usually still be achieved. For the very large bust the scarring will normally be in the crease below the breast as well. One limitation of most operations for ptosis is that there is not a lot of fullness in the upper part of the chest. This can be improved by placing a small implant at the time of surgery. mammoplasty

A very large bust can cause back ache as well as discomfort in the shoulders and sweating beneath the breasts. For a moderately large breast a lollipop scar can be used. However more commonly the anchor shape scar is used. Again, nipple sensation is often affected, and breast feeding is not an option afterwards. A common complication after this surgery is delayed healing and dressings may be needed for a week or two but it has been shown that breast reduction is an operation with a very high degree of patient satisfaction. liposuction

An alternative for women who want to avoid scarring is liposuction of the breasts. It is a shorter operation, involves less time in hospital, there is less risk of infection or bleeding, and no delayed healing. The major disadvantage is limited elevation of the nipple, so although the breast is much smaller and lighter, the nipple remains low and the breast keeps some of its drooping appearance.

indulgence! WE ROAD TEST WEYBRIDGE’S NEW AND ONLY BEAUTY SPA WITH A DIFFERENCE!

D

esperately in need of some pampering, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to experience a facial at Inspiration Beauty Spa. The things I do for the benefit of this magazine! The salon’s owner and my therapist for the treatment was Lisa and I have to say from the moment I walked in the door, she made me feel relaxed but incredibly welcome. Lisa has been focusing on the beauty industry for more than 16 years having previously worked for large salons and spas in the UK and Canada, and the experience shows. Her naturally infectious personality allied with a sense of no-fuss professionalism put me at ease. Exclusive to Inspiration, I was about to embark on my Eternal Youth Facial via a mesotherapy treatment by Skeyndor – something I hear celebrities like Kate Moss, Penelope Cruz and Naomi Campbell swear by. Mesotheraphy uses the latest technique called electroporation – a process which enhances the skin at a cellular level, optimising skin hydration, stimulating collagen production and elastic fibres. It also improves plumpness of the skin. But first came a full consultation where I discussed my main concerns, namely sun damage and slightly spotty stressed-out skin. Then Lisa started the facial by cleansing and toning my skin, followed by an enzyme and natural fruit peel. These dissolved my dead skin cells. 44 Health & Beauty December 2009

A cryotherapy lotion (which lowers the temperature of the skin) was applied to lift and tighten followed by an invigorating massage. I then had a rather luxurious specialist mask full of a cocktail of anti ageing ingredients painted on to my skin. This was finished with an award-winning eternal eye cream and facial serum. The sensation was on of lift, freshness and hydration all at the same time without feeling weighed down with products (something I have experienced in the past with some facials). Days later, I still think I could see the beneficial effects of the treatment. So, if this sounds good why not experience this luxury facial at Inspiration Beauty Spa, Queens Road in Weybridge? Or in the comfort of your home? Call Lisa on (0)7974 393015 as she is taking bookings now.

calvin Klein

Unveiled in 1993 to bucket-loads of controversy, Kate Moss became the face of the CK fragrance Obsession, starring in both the men’s and women’s ads. Photographed by her then boyfriend Mario Sorrenti, the young supermodel posed nude in both ads, while the campaign was accused by some of blurring the gender distinction and bordering on paedophilia when Moss appeared face down, naked, without makeup to promote the men’s fragrance. 46 Health & Beauty December 2009

YSl opium

A poster campaign in 2000 featuring the then voluptuous Sophie Dahl caused huge controversy and went on to be banned in the UK. According to the ASA the ads were too sexually suggestive – a naked and very womanly Sophie apparently in the throes of sexual ecstasy, were deemed likely to cause offence and subsequently dropped from view. Much like Ms Dahl’s weight which succumbed to the world of fashion and robbed everyone of a supermodel with actual curves.

BrooKe ShieldS’ calvinS

In 1980 the fashion world was taken aback when at just 14 years old Brooke Shields became the face of Calvin Klein jeans and uttered the immortal phrase: “Do you want to know what comes between me and my Calvins? Nothing” Puritanical Americans were aghast at the sexualisation of young Ms Shields which continued unabashed with roles in Pretty Baby and Blue Lagoon. fcuK

In the late 90s, fashion store French

Connection launched a marketing campaign called FCUK. Controversy based on the similarity of the acronym to an obscenity soon followed and French Connection lapped it up extending the campaign to include a range of word play T-Shirts like “mile high fcuk” and “cool as fcuk”. In a trademark infringement case in 2001 however a UK high court judge branded the campaign “tasteless and obnoxious” and finally, following years of complaints the ASA banned several of the adverts. Furthermore, they ordered French Connection to submit all posters to them for approval before they could be shown. Wonderbra

Plunge style bras were all the rage in the UK, but in 1994 they went supernova after the launch of the now infamous poster featuring Eva Herzigova in a Wonderbra gazing down at her breasts with the caption “Hello Boys”, ambiguously addressing either male admirers or her breasts. Legend has it that a number of car accidents were caused due to men being distracted by the image. The poster became so influential it was featured in an exhibition at the V&A and voted in at number ten in a “Poster of the Century” contest. dove real Women

The Dove Real Women campaign, launched in 2004 and still going strong marked a watershed moment for women all over the world. Finally the female form in all its glory, no matter the shape or size was being celebrated – women now felt as though they could be positive about their looks and more forgiving of their imperfections. The campaign has oft been copied, most

notably by M&S but it still remains the original and the best of its kind. levis launderette

In 1985 a gorgeous young model stripped down to his underwear in a public launderette and women swooned, while men thought perhaps it was time to hit the gym. The

Nick Kamen ad for Levis, complete with Marvin Gaye’s “Through the Grapevine” soundtrack, was voted the fourth best TV ad of all time. It also changed the face of advertising and gave rise to more adverts featuring male figures of fantasy to interest women, in addition to the traditional sex sells to men adage. Legend has it that Guess? Jeans executive Paul Marciano first saw Playboy Playmate Anna Nicole Smith in an early 1990s issue and, struck by her resemblance to Hollywood bombshell Jayne Mansfield, immediately decided to cast her in a new series of ads. Replacing Claudia Schiffer in 1992, Smith became one of the most wellknown models in the world soon after her sultry black and white photographs were released. They also unquestionably upped the ante for jeans adverts from that moment on. 48 Health & Beauty December 2009

TwiGGy M&s

Following several years of boardroom instability, a sharp drop in profits and an on-off relationship with the British public, M&S finally began to find its feet again in 2004 with the launch of their now iconic ad campaign. Featuring Twiggy and Myleene Klass amongst others, it cemented the brands return to its heartland of fans. With a wide ranging appeal, the campaign worked because it featured women and men of all ages and styles. The campaign is still going strong five years later which says it all.

Advertisements for premium perfume brand Chanel No.5 have always been an eagerly anticipated event in the beauty world and none more so than 2005’s effort “Chanel No.5 The Film”. Easily the most expensive perfume ad ever made it was directed by celebrated film maker Baz Lurhmann and starred Hollywood royalty Nicole Kidman. She received a cool $12 million for appearing in the 180 second short, but undeniably beautiful film.

SURREY DINING

YOU LUCKY

PEOPLE! A LOOK AT SOME OF THE FANTASTIC RESTAURANTS SURREY RESIDENTS HAVE ON THEIR DOORSTEPS

S

urrey is full of great places to eat out, with establishments suitable for every occasion, palate and budget. From a quick bowl of pasta and glass of wine at a family run Italian in Surbiton, a Sunday roast and pint of locally produced ale in Chiddingfold, brunch with friends and a Bellini in Richmond, to dining at one of the finest French restaurants in the UK. Surbiton is home to a number of restaurants serving reasonably priced food, perfectly pitched at the weary commuter, and let’s face it, we’ve all been there: desperately trying to recall the contents of the fridge, mentally concocting a satisfying dish; something quick, hot and filling (especially during the dark winter months), soggy spring 52 Health & Beauty December 2009

onions and sweaty cheddar just won’t cut it. On such occasions, Da Lucio in Surbiton is the perfect welcoming place to dive into, especially if you can persuade someone to join you. Share the marinated olives, or the anti pasto misto, with a glass of house red, and traditional main dishes like the carbonara, or Romana pizza, which provide a satisfying evening meal, for less than £20 a head. Be sure to check out the specials board, generally well stocked with offerings that are freshly prepared. By contrast, if you want an extraordinary dining experience, to celebrate a special occasion, or a weekend treat; wander just a few yards

along Maple Road and you will find the discreet exterior of The French Table. The interior is unpretentious but inviting; just a glance at the menu reveals this restaurant is all about the food; not flamboyant decor. In fact, The French Table has attracted so much acclaim locally that Gordon Ramsay visited the restaurant in early November; leading to its subsequent appearance on Channel 4’s The F Word. The starters range from butternut squash soup with macadamia nut tortellini, to a duo of fois gras. Main dishes include the trilogy of pork (a delicacy for which the restaurant is famed), and fish courses complemented by skilfully chosen accompaniments, such as line caught sea bass with lobster beignet served with a curry and coconut sauce. The only problem, is deciding what to go for (you’re likely to change your mind at least three times before you order). Be sure to contact the restaurant for a reservation well in advance, as they are always fully booked. From French cuisine on the outskirts of London, to the wholesome best of British food, that would make Nigella proud. Celebrating 25 years since its opening, The Dining Room in Hersham

is a rustic, family owned restaurant, which serves a plethora of inviting dishes, perfect for this time of year. Described by esteemed food critic Egon Ronay as: “native fare in decent portions at affordable prices”, if you want to enjoy good food, and leave feeling well fed, The Dining Room is the place to go. The starters are all so tempting it is almost impossible to decide between them, well, almost... The Dining Room’s signature starter cheese pot and chutney is literally too good to miss: a generous pot of double Gloucestershire cheese with toast soldiers for dipping; it’s hard to imagine anything more gratifying. That is until you get to the main courses, choose from: aromatic sweet potato curry, a selection of steak and kidney, lamb and mint and Billingsgate pies, or the beef and T.E.A., introduced by the proprietor as: “food for the working man”. You may be bursting at the seams after two courses at The Dining Room, but leaving without sampling the desserts would be a crime, especially when the selection includes toffee crumble and the chocolate box – a nutty chocolate brownie with chocolate brandy sauce, rich chocolate truffle & December 2009 Health & Beauty 53

SURREY DINING

lashings of whipped cream (anything served with ‘lashings of’ is a bona fide winner), be prepared for a serious session at the gym the following day with the treadmill turned up to max. If you are looking for delicious food and cocktails served in luxurious surroundings, Layla restaurant and lounge bar in Esher serves Lebanese food, in an atmosphere described by the establishment as: “intoxicating, vibrant and unique”. Attracting local celebrities such as England footballer John Terry, Layla is the perfect choice for a Friday or Saturday night, catching up with friends over a few drinks (or pomegranate champagne cocktails if you’re feeling flush). The Mezze selection is a good place to start, incorporating the lamb and cheese Bourak, Sambusak (pastry and filo parcels), as well as traditional Kibbeh, Fatayer, and Sfiha dishes. If you are in a virtuous mood, there are plenty of healthier options, including grilled salmon in a spicy aromatic glaze, the shish kebab chicken Taouk or cod florentine served with spinach. If you’re feeling less disciplined, Elsy’s chicken curry or the moussaka are too 54 Health & Beauty December 2009

tempting to resist, and the fruit platter served at the end of the meal is a work of art. The lounge bar provides a sumptuous environment in which to retire. From contemporary Lebanese cuisine, to the South Downs, for a traditional English Sunday afternoon, don your cosy jumper and deer stalker and head to The Mulberry Inn just outside the picturesque village of Chiddingfold. Owned by Chris Evans, the Mulberry is a great place for a relaxed afternoon by the fire; where they serve locally produced ale, and a glorious Sunday lunch. The homemade pumpkin bread with stuffed green olives, feta and olive oil is the perfect starter to enjoy while thumbing through the paper, burying your nose in a book, or trying to decide between the beef and pork for main course. Although the roast lunch menus change weekly, you are guaranteed a treat with all the trimmings. For the sweet tooth, there are the crepes in a strawberry and vanilla sauce with clotted cream, or the divine Baileys crème brulee with homemade shortbread. For a splendid end to a Sunday afternoon, neighbouring Petworth is a charming

historic town boasting beautiful gardens, within the grounds of Petworth House. If you have time, visit the Coco Cafe & Sugar Lounge where they serve a selection of coffees, and artisan chocolates. Last but by no means least, is the jewel in Richmond’s highly polished crown, Rock & Rose. Described as ‘the destination for food with passion and glamour’, Rock & Rose is one for the ladies. Catch up with friends, morning, afternoon or evening; there is a dish to suit your need. The brunch menu ticks all the boxes for a post Friday night pick me up, and includes eggs Benedict, Florentine and Royale as well as classics such as the full English or oak smoked salmon and scrambled eggs. If you’re feeling shameless, you can splash out on a glass of bucks fizz to accompany your choice of eggs. The lunchtime menu is no less decadent with potted Cornish crab with melba toast, or the smoked salmon belinis, crème fraiche and caviar to start, as well as an array of house specials and grills. The evening menu provides extra dishes on top of the lunchtime offerings, including whole roasted corn fed chicken to share, or the lobster surf and turf served with hand cut chips. Rock & Rose is the perfect women’s retreat; with a champagne cocktail in one hand, and a handful of shoestring fries in the other. OK... The diet starts tomorrow.

NUTRITION

DIET MYTHS:

DEBUNKED THE TRUTH BEHIND SOME OF THE FALLACIES SURROUNDING WEIGHT LOSS

T

he desire to lose weight is the rock on which a multi-million pound industry is built. Not a week goes by without some new, scientifically “proven” diet, promising to melt away the pounds or yet another study saying red wine or coffee are good for you, then bad and then good again. It’s no wonder so many of us are confused as to the truth behind what we should and should not put into our bodies. Hopefully the following advice from nutrition expert Holly Oakden will remove, at least some of the bewilderment. THE BEST WAY TO LOSE WEIGHT IS TO CUT OUT CARBOHYDRATES ALTOGETHER

Carbs have been characterised as the scourge of dieters everywhere but it’s important to remember that they are an important food group we require for energy. Cutting out one element altogether is a recipe for yo-yo dieting so the best idea is to cut back on refined carbs such as soda and foods made with white flour, while loading up on healthier carbs like whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. BY SKIPPING MEALS I CAN ‘BANK’ SOME CALORIES AND THEREFORE GO OUT DRINKING WITH MY MATES GUILT-FREE

People always underestimate the calorific value of alcohol. You may have starved yourself during the day but very quickly the calories will stack up after one, two, three drinks. In addition, drinking on an empty stomach is never a good idea – not just from 56 Health & Beauty December 2009

a health perspective but also because you more than likely find yourself in a more drunken state and “pig-out” on fast food on the way home. IF I EAT A LOT OF SALAD I WILL DROP A DRESS SIZE

The key to this is not the content of your salad but what is in your dressing. For example, a Caesar salad complete with obligatory high-fat dressing could stack up over 800 calories.D RINKING

COFFEE IS GOOD DRINKING COFFEE IS GOOD FOR LOSING WEIGHT

This myth arose because it was thought that the caffeine in coffee boosts your metabolism and therefore helps you shed calories. Coffee does indeed increase the metabolism but only very slightly – not enough to affect the amount of fat you burn. LOW-FAT MILK HAS LESS CALCIUM THAN FULL-FAT MILK

Untrue. In fact skimmed and semiskimmed milk actually have more because the calcium is in the watery part, not the creamy part. However, cutting fat from your diet is advisable from a weight-loss perspective so go for skimmed milk wherever possible. EATING AFTER SEVEN AT NIGHT STOPS ME SHEDDING THE POUNDS

Research has shown it doesn’t matter when you eat, it doesn’t affect your metabolism or how you store fat. The key to weight loss is to eat fewer calories than your body burns. As long as you do that, it doesn’t matter what time of day you eat, you’ll lose weight. But be conscious to avoid snacking in front of the telly. CHOLESTEROL IS BAD FOR YOU

Cholesterol can be dangerous because it forms deposits that line and clog our arteries, which then in turn contribute to heart disease. But we all need some blood cholesterol

because it’s used to build cells and make vital hormones. So choose unsaturated fats such as vegetable oils, avocados, nuts and seeds. THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT SECRET TO WEIGHT LOSS IS A LOW-FAT DIET

The body needs fat for energy, tissue repair and to transport vitamins A, D, E and K around the body, so a third of your calories should come from fat. As a guideline, women need 70g of fat a day (95g for men) with 30g as the minimum (40g for men). STOPPING SMOKING INEVITABLY LEADS TO WEIGHT GAIN

This is an excuse used by so many people looking for an excuse to continue what is a lethal habit. While nicotine increases the metabolism slightly, its effect is negligible. There is no hard and fast rule that says becoming a non-smoker means you will gain weight. It is true that some people replace a cigarette with comfort food – so try to replace the chocolate bars or biscuit tin with sugar-free gum or vegetable sticks. Remember, it is better to be a slightly overweight non-smoker than a thin person who still smokes.

Bite-sized food to Brighten up your party

hristmas lunches and mulled wine evenings are a great tradition but the sight of yet another mince pie is enough to make any domestic goddess sleepwalk to the freezer section to buy canapés. But why not make your own? Put a sparkle into your home this Christmas with our mouth

watering canapés and balinis – bite-sized luxuries bursting with flavour but not so self-indulgent that you won’t look amazing in your cocktail dress. These party snacks also look like they have been slaved over, but are meant for minimal fuss or preparation, leaving you free to relax and enjoy the party.

mushroom and spinach melts

Remove stalks from chestnut mushroom so they are hollow in the centre, place them on a tray, drizzle in olive oil and roast until the juices are oozing and the mushrooms are soft. Wilt some baby spinach in a wok with some garlic or chilli oil. Fill the December 2009 Health & Beauty 59

mushroom with the spinach and add some cheese such as Brie or Emmental. Grill and serve when melted. ITALIAN CROSTINIS

Cut French bread thinly. Lightly sweep both sides of the bread with olive, garlic or chilli oil and put in oven so it can crispen up. Wait to cool and spread a layer of red or green pesto. Add a spoonful of sun blush tomatoes and sprinkle with shavings of Parmesan. Decorate with a small basil leaf.

TURKEY AND BRIE MELTS

Fill white bread sandwiches, (leaving out the butter), with turkey and Brie/ Emmental cheese or Parma ham and mozzarella. Cut the sandwich crusts off, and make into any small shape you desire. Brush outside with butter and bring to the pan, fry until golden. Stack up high and put a skewer through them. Serve immediately. If using turkey, serve with a cranberry sauce dip on the side. ROSEMARY POTATO SKEWERS

Parboil new potatoes, cut into halves. Roast in oven with olive oil, garlic, thyme, rosemary and sea salt. Skewer and serve with a garlic dip. BALINI COMBINATIONS

Balinis can be bought from any good store. Just add the following: Salmon and cream cheese; Chopped bacon and scrambled egg; Prawn and mayonniase; Tuna and cheese.

FOR THE KIDS

Children love dipping and marinating so get them involved in the cooking this Christmas

STICKY SAUSAGES

Using good quality pork sausages, dip them in a bowl of soy sauce, then in a bowl of honey until they are nicely coated. Lay them on a baking and tray and cook until brown. Cut sausages on a slant, three ways and skewer them.

CHEESE AND PINEAPPLE STICKS

Kids and adults love these retro favourites – it’s fun to make and you can even make the silver foil hedgehog out of pastry, just mould and cover.

Q. DEAR EDITOR I’m afraid that even in the winter months I’m suffering from foot odour. What causes it and how can I get rid of it? JOANNE PINEWOOD VIA EMAIL A. First of all, it’s important to say that this isn’t necessarily to do with poor hygiene. When the normal bacteria on your feet interact with moisture trapped in your socks and shoes, they emit smelly by-products. And for those who have naturally more sweaty feet, the condition is exacerbated. Wear absorbent cotton socks with shoes made from breathable materials, like canvas and leather, and sprinkle drying powder into your shoes every morning.

with an oil-free lotion cleanser, then rub on an alcohol-free toner.

Q. DEAR EDITOR

Q. DEAR EDITOR

Every time I shave, I get a bumpy rash along my bikini line. Can you help? KATIE FLOSS VIA EMAIL

My nails aren’t in great shape. What can I do to improve them? JULIA FORSYTHE VIA EMAIL

A. A too-close shave or waxing can make hairs split and loop around just under the surface of the skin. As these hairs grow, they push up against your skin, causing inflammation and redness. Skin experts now say the best treatment is to an acetylsalicylic acid solution twice a day to gently exfoliate the top layer of skin and allow the hairs to poke through.

A. If your nails are thin, dry or brittle, it is usually the result of your health. Eat a well-balanced diet, with adequate amounts of protein and foods containing vitamin A such as green and yellow vegetables and eggs. Apply a nourishing cream or oil, such as almond oil, every night before you go to bed and try to protect your hands by wearing rubber gloves when undertaking household tasks. Also exfoliate your nails weekly and file your nails on a regular basis.

Q. DEAR EDITOR Why has my face suddenly become so shiny? REGGIE WHITE VIA EMAIL A. There could be a couple of things. Perhaps it’s a hormonal imbalance (have you any other new symptoms?) – if so, you should consult a doctor. Alternatively it could just be a too-harsh cleansing routine. Some alcohol-based toners and gritty scrubs can overdry and irritate your skin and make it produce extra oil to compensate. In this case, wash your face

Q. DEAR EDITOR I hear that Type 2 diabetes is on the increase. Should I be worried? LUCY LOHAN VIA EMAIL A. Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects the body’s ability to convert sugar into energy. This allows sugar levels to build up in the blood, which can lead to heart disease, blindness and other serious complications. Type 2 diabetes is indeed

on the increase and can affect people of all ages. Early symptoms are subtle but consult your doctor if you are suffering from the one or several of the following: • An abnormal increase in thirst • Headaches, blurred vision and fatigue • Sores that are slow to heal • Frequent yeast infections • Itchy skin, especially in the groin area

Q. DEAR EDITOR My husband has shingles. Can I catch this from him? MARION TAYLOR VIA EMAIL A No, you cannot catch shingles from someone else, but you can catch chicken pox if you haven’t suffered from this in the past. The virus is transmitted via direct contact with the vesicles, so keeping the affected area covered with a large dressing will prevent transmission.

10 MINUTES WITH

10

MINUTES WITH...

TV PRESENTER, SURREY RESIDENT AND WIFE-TO-BE OF EAMONN HOLMES

RUTH LANGSFORD HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO MAINTAIN A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE?

The older I get the harder I find it to keep in shape, but I’m not prepared to succumb to the elasticated waist just yet! So I train twice a week with personal trainer Justin Buckthorp who gets me motivated. He makes sure no two training sessions are ever the same – he incorporates cardio with lots of Swiss ball exercises, weights and floor work which keep me guessing. AND YOUR DIET?

Although I love cooking and eating I do try to watch what I eat within reason. The best way for me to maintain my weight is a high protein, low carb diet and I know not drinking wine would help massively – but as yet I haven’t managed that! WITH YOUR RECENT ENGAGEMENT TO EAMONN, AN IMPENDING WEDDING MUST BE A GREAT INCENTIVE TO STAY IN SHAPE?

It’s the best! But I’m determined not to lose loads of weight – at my age it doesn’t suit me and I’d just look haggard. So, my plan is “toned and healthy”. AS THE INVENTOR OF THE “FEEL-GOOD FACTOR LUNCHBOX” HOW IMPORTANT DO YOU THINK A HEALTHY DIET IS IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN MENTAL, AS WELL AS PHYSICAL WELLBEING?

It’s essential. Eating healthily is more about being organised than anything else. Doing your own lunchbox is good because you can fill it with healthy things you actually like and then hopefully you won’t be tempted to buy something naughty at lunchtime. For me, eating little and often fills me up and helps me stop eating sugary rubbish. WHEN YOU FEEL LIKE INDULGING, WHAT IS YOUR IDEAL CHEEKY TREAT?

I love a curry on a Friday night with a bottle of Indian beer to wash it down. I can eat a whole tub of Haagen-Dazs ice cream anytime! 66 Health & Beauty December 2009

EARLIER THIS YEAR YOU COMPLETED THE BUPA LONDON 10K RUN, ON BEHALF OF THE ALZHEIMER’S SOCIETY. HOW DID YOU FIND THE TRAINING?

It nearly killed me! It was my own fault really because I left it until just five weeks before the race. I’m not crazy keen on running so I can’t say I really enjoyed it but it was a great personal achievement and I raised nearly £4,000 for the Alzheimer’s Society which was my main motivation. I definitely won’t be signing up for a marathon any time soon! WHAT THREE HEALTH AND BEAUTY PRODUCTS WOULD YOU NOT LEAVE HOME WITHOUT?

My Berocca tablet in the morning – it’s a lovely fizzy wake up, and gives a daily dose of Vitamin C. I never leave the house without my Lancome waterproof mascara or people think I’m ill! And because I have quite dry skin I use Liz Earle products as they are all made with natural, botanical ingredients. I wash my face morning and night with her ‘Cleanse and Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser’ which you wipe off with a muslin cloth. AND FINALLY, AFTER A DAY AT THE STUDIO HOW DO YOU LIKE TO RELAX AND UNWIND?

I take my make up off as soon as I get home and slather my face with Liz Earle Superskin concentrate oil which smells delicious. I love to cook, so I might try out a new recipe for supper and then I like to veg out with a glass (or three!) of wine and watch repeats of 24 with Eamonn! • Interview by Claudia Smith
