C o m mu n i t i e s t h at lack trained healthcare professionals and resources are especially hard hit by i n a d e q u ate v i s i o n c a re : 9 0 percent of the people who are blind live in the wor ld’s developing countr ies.
Th e Wo r l d He al t h O rg a n i z at i o n e s t i m a te s t hat 80% of all blindness is avoidable. Through their Seeing Clear ly Program, P hy s i c i an s fo r Pe a c e e m p owe r i n - c ountr y ophthalmologists and optometr ists to address the issues of cataracts, glaucoma and errors of refraction.
On our re c e n t m i s s i o n to t h e P hi l i p p i n e s, t h e te am from Physicians for Peace and VonZipper provided access to quality eye care s e r v i c e s w i t h eye exa m s, m e d i c a l t re at m ent and optical frames through their Seeing Clear ly and Char ity for Clar ity p ro g ram s to re d u c e t he hi g h i n c i d e n c e o f preventable blindness.
Eight y - 1 s t an d 2 n d g ra d e te ache r s f ro m t we n t y-three elementar y schools were lectured on the dangers of ear ly age vision imp ai r m e n t , e d u c ate d o n t he i s s u e o f p reve n table blindness and received training to identify and screen at r isk children.
Dur ing the we e k l o n g m i s s i o n , P F P o p to m e t r i s t s i n local clinics and schools screened near ly 500 patients and elementa r y s t u d e n t s.
With Vo n Z i p p e r ’s O N E- F O R - O N E do n a t i o n s, P hy sicians for Peace is able to provide prescr iption glasses to children and adul t s i n u n d e r p r i v i l e g e d c o u n t r i e s.
