WEB WARNING Police alert Sandbach youngsters to online dangers SANDBACH Police are warning young people about the dangers of using social media. Cheshire Police has received a number of reports of Facebook profiles, being created by individuals pretending to be a young person and befriending children online. PC Helen Harrison, of the Sandbach Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “What they are doing is firstly establishing a “friendship or connection with a young person through Facebook and then sending

them sexually explicit images through the messenger services. “It is children who are seeing images and we are urging parents and carers to pay close attention to their child’s use of social media and provide them with advice and guidance to ensure they remain safe online. “Sharing our personal lives with friends and loved ones on social media can be fun and rewarding. However, if we don’t pay attention to the security of our social media profiles, it allows strangers to also have

the exact same access. “This is a criminal offence and any such reported incidents will be fully investigated. Cheshire Police and Crime Commissioner, David Keane (pictured), said: “Incidents like

this are incredibly serious. “It is important we raise awareness of this issue and provide advice and guidance to parents and carers. “This can help to protect young people in our communities and prevent them from putting themselves at risk when they use social media. If you or anyone you know has been a victim of inappropriate messages received online please contact Cheshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Fire probe POLICE are appealing for witnesses following a series of small fires in Sandbach. Several fires were started on Abbey Road and Middlewich Road in the early hours of Monday June 6. A Cheshire Police spokesman said: “Several small fires were started on Abbey Road and Middlewich Road in Sandbach between 2.30 and 4.30am. “Cheshire Police are appealing for witnesses who may have seen something. “If you have any information

please contact Cheshire Police on the non – emergency telephone number 101 and quote number CC16165778.” A spokeswoman for Cheshire Fire and Rescue confirmed one fire engine from Sandbach had been called to a fire on Middlewich Road at 3.48am that morning. The spokeswoman said: “A hose reel jet was used by firefighters to put out a small fire involving refuse. “It’s possible that the fire was started deliberately.”

Local soldier in major exercise LANCE Corporal Samuel Pitt, serving with 23 Amphibious Engineer Troop, has been participating in a major training exercise in Poland. The exercise saw them create a record by constructing the longest M3 amphibious bridge. Exercise Anakonda 2016 is a Polish led multinational exercise involving over 30,000 soldiers from 24 participating countries and is one of the biggest

exercises undertaken in Europe since the end of the Cold War. The 23 year-old from Sandbach, who is based in Minden Germany, said: “it has been really good working with the other nations, a great experience.“

Birthday picnic in the park by STEWART GREEN

THE Queen’s 90th birthday was celebrated by a Giant Picnic in the Park in Sandbach. The event was organised by Sandbach Town Council and attracted over 200 people for

an afternoon of champagne, tea, coffee and cake, Entertainment was provided by Sandbach High School’s choir and Out of the Blues, an easy listening band formed by former Sandbach pupils

School’s history boys THE heritage of Sandbach School is being preserved by two A-level history students. Their aim is to promote a history that has long been hidden from public view in time for the next School Commemoration Day. Tom Wade and Will Murphy have been assembling a memorial to the school’s past, with the help of ‘old’ Sandbachians. They have rummaged through

archives, uncovered long forgotten treasures and located all kinds of fascinating items hidden away in some cases for hundreds of years. Highlights include cricket blazers, blueprints, trophies dating back to the 1830s and the headmaster’s desk from the original building in 1677. The treasures are to go on show in a new museum display in the School’s chapel.

Don’t Despair - Repair

Often you don’t need to buy a new window, door, or a new conservatory - sometimes a repair is sufficient. We have no call out charge and can make a lot of repairs on site, or if not give you sound advice on what options are available.

LOTTERY BOOST info@thesaxon.org

ELWORTH Cricket Club is to get a share of £9 million of National Lottery funding from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities fund. The club will receive £36,792 of National Lottery funding towards replacing existing net practice facilities. The new 3-bay nets will be sited on additional land already purchased. The new location will remove current restrictions on the

The

use of nets during matches, and the existing nets area will be incorporated into the outfield space for the separate development of Junior cricket pitches planned to start in September. Sport England’s Charles Johnston said: “It’s great to see Elworth Cricket Club join the long list of successful clubs to benefit from this fund.” Elworth club chairman David Buckley said: “We are delighted

Tel 01270 730115

to have secured this investment, which means we can fully deliver our plans to improve facilities and participation in our sport. “The increased capacity of the new nets will allow greater flexibility of practice and coaching sessions for all ages. “Together with the junior pitches development this will mean better ground utilisation with matches and practice able to run concurrently.

Bed Warehouse

“It is a vital part of our strategy to extend youth membership, to establish a girls team at Elworth, and to benefit the local community by increasing the opportunity to participate in all forms of cricket.” The club reached out to entice new members earlier this month as it took part in the national ECB Open Day. The event featured taster sessions, a junior tournament and barbecue.
