SANDBACH Transport Festival is to feature a new roaming arts project this year known as SpareParts: On the Move. A £100,000 grant from the Arts Council will enable the project to take its unique carnival of transport and motion on the road to Sandbach and Crewe. The organisations will work to deliver an exciting programme of outdoor performing arts themed around transport and transport heritage. It will be a pilot project, linked with the Fleetwood Festival of Transport, to develop a touring network of transport festivals.

It is hoped the three-way tieup will boost visitor numbers in Sandbach through a parade and display of colourful and wacky live street performances bringing together ‘mayhem, motion and fun’. Cheshire East Councillor David Brown said: “This exciting pilot project has been delivered by the council’s cultural economy team and will help to boost the two transport and science/ engineering festivals that are established events in the borough’s calendar of cultural attractions.” The Sandbach Transport

Festival takes place over two days starting on April 22 and celebrates the great truck-

building heritage of the town where Foden and ERF were big employers with a family history dating back 150 years. Elsie Alcock, from the Sandbach Transport Festival, now in its 27th year, said: “We are delighted to be working with ‘SpareParts’ and grateful for Arts Council funding and the role played by Cheshire East Council, to bring an exciting arts programme to the festival.”

Speaking out STUDENTS from Sandbach School recently demonstrated that the art of public speaking is alive and well. Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Sandbach, the school entered a team in the Rotary’s Youth Speaks competition. A number of schools from across the region took part in the competition, with the Sandbach team comprised of Will Bloor, Andrew Williams and Kyle Mellor. The team’s topic was entitled ‘What Next?’. After two hours all the teams had made their presentations and the judges withdrew to deliberate. Eventually, the chief judge, His Kitchen - White Star with Matt Dakkar Tullymore Doors Mrs Farmer, Tonbridge, Kent

Honour Judge David Fletcher CBE, said the choice had been a difficult one due to the very high standard of speaking. To the delight of the students and Rotarians from Sandbach, Sandbach School was declared the winning team in the senior section. In addition Best Speaker was Sandbach’s Andrew Williams and Best Vote of Thanks went to Sandbach’s Kyle Mellor. The winners of this heat will go forward to the Rotary District 1285 final of Youth Speaks on March 4 at Frodsham. Barn find AUCTIONEERS have a made a discovery at the home of two Sandbach brothers that will excite petrol heads. Peter Wilson auctioneers from Nantwich were called to value the contents of the home, but unearthed a trio of old motorcars lying seemingly forgotten in the garden and a classic motorcycle in bits found scattered around the property. The three 1930s ‘barn-find’ discoveries and the 1970 Triumph, will be auctioned on Thursday March 2. Peter Wilson managing director Robert Stones said: “The brothers were mechanical enthusiasts with their own wellequipped garage complete with lathe and were obsessed with cars and motorbikes. “We found bits everywhere. “The three cars – a 1939 Wolseley 10 saloon (pictured), a 1934 Austin 7 box saloon and a 1933 Morris Minor two-seat tourer – are all non-runners but ripe for the restoration started by the brothers to be completed by an enthusiast.

“Each would make a splendid project ready for the spring. “We found the dismantled Triumph 500cc twin in bits throughout the house. “The wheels were in the garage, the frame in an outhouse, the fuel tank in the coal shed and the dismantled engine in a corner in a room inside the house. “However, like the cars it comes with its V5 DVLC registration document and with the availability of spares, another excellent project.” A barn find – the term given to classic cars and motorcycles found after years in undeserved storage – is something of a fantasy of collectors looking for rare projects.

Moving tribute A POIGNANT service of remembrance to mark Holocaust Memorial Day took place in Sandbach this month. Cheshire East chief executive Mike Suarez, Mayor Olivia Hunter and Mayor of Sandbach Keith Haines led more than 70 members of the public and civic dignitaries in the service at Sandbach Town Hall. The ceremony included readings of testaments from survivors of genocide, a musical performance by pupils of Sandbach School and the lighting of memorial candles. Holocaust survivor Peter Kurer gave a powerful and poignant talk about the role the Quaker

movement played in helping him and many other Jewish people flee the Nazis’ brutal oppression and escape to Britain before the outbreak of the Second World War. Cornet player William Dakin, a year 13 pupil from Sandbach School, was accompanied by John Barber on piano for a performance of ‘On With The Motley’, by Leoncavallo. Additional music was performed on trumpet by Sandbach School year nine pupil Tom Palethorpe. The Rev Thomas Shepherd, vicar of St Mary’s Church, Sandbach, read a prayer to conclude the ceremony.

Poor form sees Sandbach slip down the league SANDBACH RUFC’S winter worries continued after losing 39-15 away at Peterborough Lions. The Cheshire side ended up being well beaten although the score line does not accurately reflect the overall game. However Sandbach made too many handling errors to seriously threaten the form team in the league, who scored four tries from catch and drive from lineouts. Both sides lost players to yellow cards throughout the game with referee Dave Huson once more showing that any slight indiscretion would be penalised, and this together with the cold conditions made for a rather scrappy game. Sandbach did manage a couple of tries both when the Lions were down to 14 men, with Ant Davies going in at the corner and Joe Jepps touching down late in the game.

The

M6

Benny Elliot also added a conversion and a penalty. The disappointing result came on the back of a 33-22 defeat at home to Old Halesonians. In fact Sandbach are yet to win in 2017, with January defeats to Nuneaton, Longton and Lichfield. Handling errors appear to have played a big part in the side’s poor start to the year. The latest result left Sandbach in the relegation zone, facing a trip to Towcester to hopefully turn the tide. It is essential that Sandach look to pick up points from that one before facing high-flying Sheffield in March. Bedford and Syston, currently propping up the league table, may offer opportunities to make headway later next month. Sandbach will need to work hard to cut down on individual errors if they are to remain in the National League next season.
