Doors staff in Nantwich could be fitted with body cameras

PLANS for door staff in Nantwich town centre to wear body cameras could be trialled later this year. The proposals, designed to curb violence and antisocial behvaiour, have been welcomed by the town’s nighttime establishments. The idea is being led by Crewe-based Alpha Omega Securities, with the support of Nantwich police and the town’s Pub Watch. Nigel Woodhouse, director of operations at The Studio, told The Dabber: “Any measures

that help reduce crime and disorder in our town are welcomed.” If successful, it’s hoped all security firms involved in manning the doors of Nantwich’s pubs and clubs will equip their staff with the cameras so that any trouble can be captured on film. The proposal, which has been described as providing ‘greater protection’ for both staff and customers, was revealed by PC Matt Stonier at a meeting of Nantwich Town Council earlier this month and so far

seems to have been met with support from licencees. Nantwich Pub Watch chairman Ben Johnson

welcomed the scheme, saying it protects staff and customers and also provides accurate evidence of events.

Creatures of habit

IN the first three plays of the current season, Nantwich Players have performed comedies with fairly large casts. Things change for the February play (5th – 13th), when a small cast of women present Playhouse Creatures by April de Angelis. It is a long time since the Players have put on a restoration comedy – and this time it’s a bit different. Playhouse Creatures is a recently written play, set in the restoration period, when

theatres were re-opened after the Puritan era. It features real people who were actresses at the time, such as Nell Gwyn. Director Jo McDonald said: “They are all feisty characters. Times were tough in London then and these women were not afraid to speak their minds – sometimes in colourful language and in uncompromising terms. “It’s a tight, ensemble piece, very funny in parts but with strong drama, and some poignant moments.”

Safe and sound A PAIR of otter cubs left orphaned after a storm are recovering well at a Nantwich wildlife centre. But the pair’s rich fishy diet will cost the charity about £3,000. They were found by a member of the public in Rea Brook, Shrewsbury, at the end of December. In the wild, their mother would find trout for them to eat, so Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre is running up a bill to do the same. They will stay at the centre for nine months and then return to the wild. Lee Stewart, manager at Stapeley Grange, said: “We have been monitoring them closely since they arrived and they are doing well considering what they have been through. “They are very hungry and

they are getting through a lot of trout. “Trout doesn’t come cheap - it will cost us about £75 a month to start with. “This will increase dramatically as our little otter pups grow. “We are expecting to spend close to £3,000 on these two orphaned pups during their stay with us.” Mr Stewart said the pair were being fed trout because eating their natural diet would give them the best chance of survival on release.

ARSONISTS started a blaze at the former Redsands Children’s Centre on Saturday January 16. A fire investigation has been launched after the fire at the building was reported shortly before 3.10pm. Firefighters battled for more than two hours to bring the blaze at the disused building on Crewe Road under control.

A spokesman for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “When they arrived the firefighters were confronted with a well developed fire on the first floor. “Crews used hose reels and main water jets along with special fans to bring the blaze under control. “They remained at the scene for more than two hours.”

A NEW local history book has been launched at Nantwich Museum. In 1883 the historian James Hall referred to the cholera outbreak in Nantwich as ‘the greatest crisis in the history of the town in modern times’. This was the premise for a new book Cholera in Nineteenth Century Nantwich by Keith Lawrence and Graham Dodd. The authors, who have donated the first print of the book to the museum, would like to see it as a memorial to the event.

The book details how the disease was understood at the time of the outbreak in 1849 and describes life in the town in the early nineteenth century. The epidemic came at a time of increasing scepticism of the existing theories of disease. In Nantwich Rector Andrew Fuller Chater took the lead in dealing with the epidemic, petitioning for a local Board of Health and thus establishing the first representative local government in the town. The book is now on sale in the museum shop.

Jono’s typhoon aid

Former Redsands torched

Local history book launched

REASEHEATH College’s arboriculture assessor and lecturer Jonathan ‘Jono’ Finlow is in the Philippines answering an emergency call for help from rural communities hit by a typhoon. Jono and fellow members of the Disaster Arborist Response Team are part of a global relief effort in Northern Samar, which was hit by Typhoon Melor in December. The typhoon made its

landfall on the largely rural and impoverished region before going on to strike several other islands across the Central Philippines, which has been declared a ‘state of national calamity’. Jono and his team have been spending their two weeks on the stricken island clearing typhoon debris to allow safe access for other relief teams and treating damaged and high risk trees.

Window shopping

NANTWICH Mayor Andrew Martin was out and about over the festive period judging the ‘best dressed’ shop windows in town. This year’s winner was Hope House on High Street where volunteers had raided their homes and stock to produce a fun artic scene, full of Christmas cheer. The winners were presented with a certificate, products and a gift voucher, donated by Weaver House Clinic. Runners up included GFC Hardware in Pillory Street with a traditional theme and Lillya Grace Bridal Boutique

in Hospital Street with their unique Christmas tree wedding dress. The Mayor also commended Inside Paradise on Swine Market, Salon Forty Eight on Hospital Street and Swirly Whirlys on Pillory Street. Cllr Martin said “There has been a real buzz about town this Christmas. We have tried to encourage residents to shop local and all the retailers have worked extremely hard to produce some very attractive window fronts. “It was very hard to judge, but Hope House stood out with a display which appeals to young and old.”

New artwork on display AN exhibition by awardwinning Cheshire artist Alex Jabore will run at the Nantwich Museum until Saturday March 26. Inspired by classical artists the work concentrates on everyday domestic life, subjects with which viewers can readily identify. Still lives and portraits are employed to examine form and tone. Alex Jabore studied at Falmouth University and has exhibited widely. She said: “I often attempt tongue in cheek paintings, full of humour and the intimacy of everyday situations capable

of invoking empathy and amusement in the viewer.” In 2013 Alex won the Peak District Young Artist of the Year award and has been featured in numerous publications as a ‘youthful talent’. In her first major solo-show in London she studied the subject of “Work in Progress” attempting, through a series of paintings, to examine the creative processes and technical choices a painter faces when composing a painting. Entry to the museum is free whilst some of the paintings are available for sale.

A Handbag of Harmonies, adorned with feather boas and glitzy handbags, will sing their hearts out at the Nantwich Civic Hall on Friday February 12 to raise funds to bring drinking water to thousands of people struck by the Nepal earthquake. Organised by the Rotary Club of Nantwich, all money raised will go towards rebuilding the drinking water

source in Aruchaur, Nepal, damaged by the devastating earthquake, which tragically took some 9,000 lives. President Rod Stokes said: “In recent years the Rotary Club of Nantwich have had a close association with the Rotary Club of the Himalayan Ghurkhas and have funded several projects in the mountainous regions of Nepal.” Tickets are £10 and are available from the Civic or online at www. nantwichtowncouncil.gov.uk/.

Dabbers bounce back after disappointing defeats NANTWICH Town boss Phil Parkinson felt that his side could have taken all the points in the exciting clash with Salford City. The Dabbers took the lead through Matt Bell, but the Ammies equalised in the second half to see both sides taking a share of the points after a 1-1 draw. The result and particularly the performance were a welcome relief following a disappointing start to 2016, which included defeats to Whitby and Buxton. After the Salford game Parkinson said: “It was a really competitive game as we thought it was going to be. “I thought we were superb first half and showed what we are all about. “We knew that they wouldn’t sit back in the second half

and accept the way they were playing. “I’m a little bit disappointed with their goal in the way it ricocheted to the lad nicely. “It seems to be going that way the minute with teams getting that little bit of luck. “Salford really dug in during the second half and I thought quality wise Nantwich were slightly ahead of them a little bit, which is no disrespect to them as I thought they had the edge on us energy wise. “That is the way they play, high energy. We also play with high energy. But we like to play it as well. “I was pleased with the reaction from the players more than anything. “I asked the lads for a reaction from the last two games, which were disappointing.

“All I wanted to see was a performance because if we perform, then more than likely we get a result. I feel we were unlucky not to take all three points. “Yes they had a couple of chances but we defended
