As tiny white flakes dance outside your window in the evening, you hurriedly gather your things together so you don’t waste as much as a minute the next morning. Blanketed in white snow just begging to be ridden, the mountain is calling. It is piled up all around you, immersing you in small, glistening crystals. You lean into a full throttle euro carve on a corduroy groomer and it feels like you’re riding on tracks. Everything around you stands still as if in slow motion and, in full flow, each movement feels like it’s been planned long in advance. The cold wind blows past your face as you send a stylish 3 off the kicker and the park slowly spins a circle beneath you. Despite the height and airtime, the landing feels as soft as butter…

we’ve learnt over the years. Following the return towards camber boards, the Savvy has set the women’s snowboard world talking with a brand new Freestyle Camber shape. For the Groms, the Squad Jr. is the perfect board for constant progression thanks to its universal Freestyle Hybrid shape. Even the rental game is getting more variety with the new Hybrid shape, a playful board profile that will help even the most advanced riders break down boundaries both on piste and in the park. The new bindings collection is perfectly colour matched to the new board graphics and lets you combine bindings individually. Depending on preference, you also have the choice of the speedy Fastec step-in system or the more conventional 2-strap binding. Fresh new designs are waiting across the range, so you’re bound to find something that suits not just your taste, but your riding level too.

Camber boards, with classic tension, are concave between the two contact points of nose and tail. With direct power transmission and maximized edge pressure they are best suited for precise, aggressive riding styles and high velocity riding; as well as the big kicker line, icy pipes and high speed runs in the backcountry. Hence shapes with a lot of camber require proper riding technique as well as experience. However, in a more mellow version, camber shapes can also be great for beginners as they teach flawless technique and skills.

Playful park riding works best on short boards, so the team asked our R&D Laboratory for a short board with the edge hold and stability of a much longer one! They also wanted a board that facilitated fast rotations but minimized unwanted reverts and didn’t catch an edge in washed out landings. It also had to be as stable and smooth as a longer board with according edge hold when charging icy in-runs. It was no easy task but our R&D Department worked out an unique new sidecut, pushing the widest parts of the board towards the nose and tail. This extends the effective edge, allowing riders to opt for shorter boards without sacrificing edge hold or stability. It also ensures a safe feeling on hard obstacles in the park as well as perfect grip when pushing in icy pipes.

This universal shape combines classic camber tension between the bindings with a mellow rocker in the nose and tail. This offers playful riding qualities while maintaining excellent edge hold, making hybrid shapes not only great for the backcountry but also for the park. A shorter board is definitely a benefit in both cases! Völkl has two different hybrid variations on offer: a Freestyle and a Freeride Hybrid Shape, with sidecuts and nose geometries perfectly matched to their designated terrains.

hYBRId SHaPEs To combine the playful riding char acteristics of rocker boards with the stability and response of camber boards, the Völkl R&D Department developed two different Hybrid Shapes for freestylers and freeriders.

All Völkl rocker boards with “negative camber” are flat between the bindings, while from the inserts out towards the nose and tail the board is convex, which provides amazing float in powder. In general, rocker shapes are more forgiving, making them perfect for tricks on rails and jibs in the park. Völkl has also added a bit more width to the nose and tail, combined with a smaller radius, offering incredible hold when a board is on an edge, comparable to camber shapes. The result is a playful board with perfect edge grip when needed. This distinguishes Völkl rocker shapes from all others on the market.

The only thing that matters in powder is float! Tired of struggling with 180 cm pow sticks, the team asked for a freeride board with maximum float but that was still playful and dynamic in the backcountry. This was the inspiration for the Völkl R&D Department to conceive the Playful Freeride Sidecut. This dynamic freeride shape, with its shortened effective edge is super responsive. To accomplish this, the widest points of nose and tail are pushed inwards, while the camber between the bindings is enhanced. This adds grip as soon as pressure is put on the edges. The rocker in nose and tail also lets you drift effortlessly in steep couloirs and icy terrain, without uncontrolled sliding. At the same time the rocker underneath the tips prevents the board from digging into bombed out powder, especially if a rider’s weight is thrown over the front when landing.

The team’s signature boards, the Squad Prime and Squad Rocker are equipped with an especially durable and stable armour wood, which can support the weight of a small car. These H-shaped inlays are milled into the wood core around the inserts, protecting the board from cracks and breaks in the hardest of landings. And an extra portion of pop is added too...

HorRor shOck absOrber HIGH TECH is given a high profile at Völkl and so the legendary Horror-Shock Absorber is refined every year, to make our boards as stable as possible.

The Shock Absorber, a relief on the core, also counters impacts. The hardwood used is of an especially high density and sucks up the stresses and strains imposed by the bindings’ edges. As an additional side effect, the inlay also provides additional pop.

SHApES When buying snowboard boots, neglecting your shoe size can result in an uncomfortable season. Too small of feet on a wide board mean that not enough pressure can be put on the edges – the board gets dull in its reaction and hard to turn. When wearing big boots on a narrow board, toes and heel overlap and lead to edge catching slams on icy slopes or even a bruised heel after jumps! A brief instruction to avoid this: With a boot size of 9 (MP* 26) or smaller, we recommend a narrow board below 260 mm. Boot size 10 (MP* 28) is falling into the “gray zone” – depending on the length of the shoe sole, the stance and the range of riding, it might be already advisable to ride a wide board. Those who are wearing boots bigger than size 11 (MP* 29) should buy an extra wide shape as it will offer the best board performance and direct power transmission. Don‘t worry: Wide doesn‘t mean sluggish! The Dimension, with 280 mm waist Völkl‘s widest board, shows agile performance and direct power transmission from the first run.

NORMAL This category features boards with a width from 250 mm to 255 mm. They are not too wide, but also not too narrow and the perfect choice for riders with a standard boot size. Blunt nose Geometry To make freestyle boards as playful as possible, while still ensuring maximum edge grip, the Blunt Nose Geometry extends the effective edge without increasing board size. This shifts the widest points of the shape further outwards and away from the bindings. This “compressed” look is unusual but guarantees improved board feeling in the park. This is because it allows a rider to ride a shorter board, providing exact grip, perfect pressure on the edges, faster spins, and stable and revert-free landings, even if a trick isn’t perfectly stomped.

Tapered Nose Geometry The right nose shape is just as crucial for riding and board characteristics as any other component in a board. Hence we developed the Tapered Nose Geometry, especially tailored to the Playful Freeride Hybrid Shape. The square, tapered form not only provides perfect float but also playfully handles changing snow conditions off piste. With the Tapered Nose the board can cut through hard crusts and won’t get stuck even in difficult terrain. The angular segments divert pressure away from the edges, so the nose won’t dig into the snow even in blown out or broken crust. This special geometry also pushes the widest parts of the board toward the middle, shortening the effective edge by at least 30 cm. This gives a 167 model a similar edge length as a 140! You won’t believe the riding pleasure that the Freeride Hybrid Shape with Tapered Nose delivers.

Pointed Nose Geometry

Fish Tail

This geometry is particularly interesting when combined with camber, which traditionally delivers less float in powder than rocker.

This feature is especially useful in combination with a wider nose that offers perfect gliding characteristics in powder.

Thanks to the square outline, sudden edge pressure during a turn (for example when riding from powder into crust) is passed to the back of the board. The straight, square spot cuts through wind-blown snow and lifts the nose up. This reduces pressure and prevents the front of the nose from digging in. When riding the Pace and AFC the Pointed Nose’s short “tapered” zone even intensifies this effect and allows for effortless gliding in changing snow conditions.

While the nose lifts up, the narrower Fish Tail sinks and locks into the snow thanks to its square shape. This not only stabilizes the board during straight lines but also delivers smoothness when cutting radical turns in the backcountry.

But don’t worry, thanks to the raised tail you can even do switch runs in the powder and on the slopes. In addition to that the tapered core of the Pace gives the fishtail better torsional flex. This allows a tighter radius on carves and adds more edge control for radical turns and fast changes in direction.

Those calling park and pipe home need boards they can rely on 100 percent – especially when it’s hard and icy. Therefore all Völkl freestyle twin-tip boards are equipped with a specific Shock Absorber that absorbs big jumps and hard landings. In the park the boards need to be easy to ride and be playful on all kind of obstacles while offering perfect edge hold. The result is forgiving boards and clean landed tricks!

As mountain folks say: “Spirits rise in the endless vastness of the mountains”. The Fastec Splitec Alu is a super-light and extremely handy splitboard binding that fits on every Voilé Interface. The teeth of the additionally available crampons offer great grip, especially in icy traverses. Thanks to the integrated Slider Track they are easily adjustable on the way up, while strapped in and with gloves on: simply lift the heel, insert the crampons from behind and secure with a click. After use they can be dismounted just as easily by pulling a little lever, without getting out of the bindings.

The stainless steel stabilizer is inserted through both touring brackets to stiffen your splitboard in the center and keep it from shifting or vibrating. It stiffens your boardflex and reduces the torsion. Your board keeps more stable at high speeds and the Stabilizer enables you to transfer from edge to edge without any loss of control or energy.

For big mountain adventures: With its stiffer flex the Untrac feels very comfortable in steep couloirs and challenging terrain. Top-notch materials like Premium Carbon and a thin topsheet allow for a power efficient ascent.

Xsight

For the powder funpark: A longer board provides great hold during the climb up and effortlessly floats through the powder when riding down. A shorter board is easier to turn and more playful allowing for freestyle moves in the backcountry. The Xsight manages to combine both in one board! This is possible thanks to the shorter effective edge, the Tapered Shape and the softer flex.

Cold hands become a thing of the past, as the unique Völkl Skin Pin System eliminates unnecessary fumbling. Simply hook the integrated pin into the eyelet in the nose and fix it with a 90° twist, while the other end is fixed to the hook in the tail with a rubber fastener. The Untrac and the Xsight come with unique, custom-fit Vacuum Base Skins, which stick to the base even in extreme cold. After hiking you can simply stick them together, without having to use a separating foil, and stow them in your backpack.

Once adjusted to fit boots and personal riding style, the straps fit snugly for the rest of the season. Simply engage the highback lever, close the Auto-Release Buckles and off you go.
