NO FEAR Just FAITH Fear is in my evaluation and assumption, bred in selfishness. It’s based on how we feel, our emotions, and our image. But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. (Hebrews 11:6 KJV) 10 I Winter 2013

B

ut let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. (James 1:6 KJV)

It’s not faith if YOU can do it! Your faith will be tested! It will be tested because the faith we had for yesterday, last month or even last year will not do, for what God has for us to do!

This is the year of great growth and we have to grow in faith also! During the construction of our new sanctuary in January 2011, our church was on a 30 day consecration. It would be many days we would have noon day prayer while the construction would be going on and some days there would be “stop work citations”posted for one reason or another. It would challenge our faith, but it didn’t stop us from trusting, praying and believing. We have been in our new sanctuary almost 2 years now! God is faithful!

Faith takes trust in God. The enemy will challenge you every time you have a mind to trust God. The enemy will tell you if you trust God, if you be obedient to Him, I’m gonna do this or that. It’s better to obey than sacrifice. The scripture says:

How we feel: I don’t like how I feel or how it would make me feel when I step out and do this or that. It feels weird. I am not used to this. - Your feelings will trick you sometimes. Our emotions: Our emotions can be deceitful also! Our mind will have our emotions dictating to our bodies to feel sad, worried, anxious, rejected, angry, odd, abandoned and paranoid. Our image: How crazy does this sound? If I trust God, I’m gonna look crazy! If I obey HIM and step out on HIS WORD AND PROMISES to me, people will say I’m crazy, they will say I’m too deep, they will say I’m doing too much!

The enemy will challenge you every time you have a mind to trust God.

And Samuel said, Hath the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, he hath also rejected thee from being king. (1 Samuel 15:22, 23 KJV)

Sometimes we have FEAR CONCERNING THE PROCESS Jonah in the Bible, didn’t want to go to Nineveh he had a word of judgement and was worried about what the response of the people would be. Sometimes we have FEAR OF SUCCESS The leprous men in the Bible were dying. They knew for sure if they stayed they would die. But the knew it was a possibility that if they went the could die, or get food and clothing and other resources. But they were so used to not having and facing death. The famous quote from this story is: “why sit we here till we die?” “I will add that if you just gotta die, die trying!”

This is all based in selfishness, which goes back to the scriptures in 1 Samuel 15:22,23 that speaks of stubbornness being as iniquity and idolatry. Idolatry is based in self. The first letter in the word is “I Let’s get more of HIM, so we can walk, live and operate in FAITH and not fear. For God HAS NOT, given us the spirit of fear, but of LOVE, POWER AND A SOUND MIND! Lady Stephanie Dillard Women’s Ministry Director, Citadel Of Deliverance Lady Stephanie Dillard, Citadel of Deliverance Women’s Ministry Director Woman By God’s Design Conference Host Mary’s Girls Founder For more please contact Lady Stephanie at divinewill13@ hotmail.com

Again, it all boils down to trust. There is a song that says: TRUST AND OBEY, FOR THERE’S NO OTHER WAY TO BE HAPPY IN JESUS, BUT TO TRUST AND OBEY. How do we trust Him? With having more of HIM AMD LESS OF US. Because self, would like to take the easy way out. Self likes what is familiar. Self likes what is comfortable. Self likes what is convenient! But we must realize that it is not about us, it’s about HIM! Fear is in my evaluation and assumption, bred in selfishness. It’s based on how we feel, our emotions, and our image.

Bernal Smith, II President and Publisher, Tri-State Defender by Verna V. Nickelberry

OPM…Who is Bernal Smith, II? Tell us a little about yourself.

Recently I had the opportunity to interview newly appointed president and publisher of the New Tri-State Defender, the oldest African American newspaper in Memphis, Tenn. After only spending a short time with Mr. Bernal Smith, II, I was very impress and could sense that he has a passion for his new assignment.

14 I Winter 2013

Smith…I am a man who like most people has seen some up and downs, some trials and tribulations and have tried to use those as lessons towards becoming the man God calls for me to be. Ultimately, I am a servant leader and an eternal optimist! I believe that like all people, God’s purpose for my life is to serve others and help make others lives better through my gifts and talents. I am blessed through all of my roles and responsibilities that I get an opportunity to fulfill that daily. I am a son, a father, a husband, a business man, a leader, a provider, a mentor, and a work in progress seeking to get better each day. Professionally, I am the President and Publisher of The New Tri-State Defender, now approaching three years in leading that company in its transformation from newspaper to multi-media business. I am also a principal partner in Olympic Tax Service one of the city’s top professional

tax preparation companies. We are currently developing a credit union to greater serve the needs of our customers and other under banked in the Greater Memphis area. I also still maintain my own company B.E. Smith and Associates through which I am developing other media concepts, producing events and providing consulting services to other entrepreneurs. Be on the lookout for several television projects that are in the works! I am excited about the future and all that it holds. OPM…Since becoming the President and Publisher of The Tri-State Defender, what changes have you implemented? Smith…Wow! This has been an exhilarating journey!! I had a clear vision for where we could take the TSD and we have systematically implemented those changes and improved our financial performance, reach and influence. One of the most significant things that I’ve done was reposition the publication and made it relevant again. Before I came on board here, I like many others in the community was aware of the “Tri-State” but was not necessarily a regular reader. I understood that we needed to change the way people viewed the publication and the content in it and how we reached those people. So we began a process of engaging thought leaders throughout the community, weighing in on major issues, endorsing candidates, and utilizing the platform to give voice to the issues most impacting the lives of our readers and the citizens of Greater Memphis. Essentially we embarked on a process to make TSD matter again. After that, I focused on changing our business model moving from just display and classified ad venue to growing new streams of revenue including, digital platforms, first class events, and specialty publications. We established our social media presence with facebook, twitter and YouTube among others. We launched a new website, www.tsdmemphis.com. We grew our email database to nearly 7500 (from less than 2,000) and launched our daily digital edition. We’ve established and added new events, Women of Excellence, Men of Excellence, an annual Health Fair, the Best in Black Awards, Salute to First Ladies, TSD Holiday Parade, and in 2014 we’ll launch the S.W.A.G Awards for Youth. We’ve partnered with great organizations and events like the Memphis Black Expo (February 23, 2013) and the Med Foundation annual Med Gala to name a few. We’ve established media partnerships with other media entities including WMC-TV 5, WDIA and Clear Channel Media, WLOK, Fox 13, and others where I regularly provide

commentary on various issues and help amplify the voice of the TSD. I also want to acknowledge the great team of professionals that have been a part of this renaissance. I have a small but dedicated and dynamic staff along with a core group of contractors, free lance photographers, writers, independent sales reps and volunteers that have contributed greatly to our progress. We’ve been aggressive, creative, resourceful and fortunate and I am truly excited about our opportunities going forward! OPM…What would you say has been some of your greatest challenges as the Publisher? Smith…The greatest challenges have been finding the right talent particularly on the sales side of the business. Human capital continues to present some challenges as we look to grow. Continued changes in our industry, our customers’ changing appetite for print advertising along with the continued conversion of our business model are all great challenges for us. For instance, Kroger was once about a $40,000 a year advertiser with us but made a decision in 2011 to go away from local newspaper advertising. So we lost a significant piece of business and have been seeking ways to reestablish our value proposition with them through other means so that we recapture at least some of that revenue. We are also pushing hard to build added value relationship with local owned companies in all industries and gain the support of more small and minority owned business to become regular advertisers across all of our platforms. Lastly, the ongoing challenge of managing our cash flow cycle and attempting to turn the company around from some difficult financial circumstances continues to be a part of our regular battles. Ultimately, I feel due to the market demographics, the implementation of smart, creative strategies and never ceasing diligence and attention to the ordinarypeoplemagazine.org | 15

Being a committed servant of God, a dedicated father, a loving mate, a trusted friend and or colleague, a business owner, a community builder, someone with self respect and self reliance but without selfishness is the example I seek to set. details of execution we will be a force to reckon with for years to come! OPM…In a society where so many young men and boys need role models, would you consider yourself to be someone that they can emulate? Smith…Absolutely yes! I believe it is part of what I am called to do. My father was a great role model and surrogate father to so many others through his work at Boys and Girls Clubs of Memphis. He established a baseline for me to follow and build upon. By no means am I perfect, as I mentioned previously I am a work in progress, yet I feel I must provide leadership, guidance and hopefully inspiration to young people, particularly African American boys and even many men as they go through their struggles and life endeavors. Being a committed servant of God, a dedicated father, a loving mate, a trusted friend and or colleague, a business owner, a community builder, someone with self respect and self reliance but without selfishness is the example I seek to set. I hope to inspire others to greater heights as I strive to do and be better each day! OPM…What are your aspect on community service and why do feel it is important? Smith…Dr. King once said we all can be great because we all can serve! I believe that to be a fundamentally true and powerful statement. To whom much is given much is required and for those of us that God has so richly blessed with time, talent, skills, energy,

16 I Winter 2013

ability and opportunity, it is critical that we use a portion of that to build and help improve the lives of our fellow brothers and sisters. As I stated earlier it is the ultimate purpose for our being. It is also the only way our community gets better. The only way that things improve is when people commit to building opportunities and breaking down barriers for others in more challenging situations than themselves. Great communities are built on service!! OPM…What can we expect from The Tri-State Defender in 2013? Smith…This year we are taking things to and even higher level with the publication of our first Achieve School Choice Guide for Parents and the first Achieve Education Expo coming up on March 30, 2013. We are building a dynamic publication for parents to better understand and navigate the changing landscape of education here in Memphis and Shelby County. We are also about to give the print edition a facelift with a new logo, masthead, and format! The new edition will hit the street by the end of the first quarter 2013. We will have a launch event to celebrate this new beginning and of course you are invited! We are excited about the second annual Best in Black Awards, it will be bigger and better than last year and for those that attended they know that means it will be off the chain! Again there are lots of reasons to be excited about the future of The New Tri-State Defender the best is yet to come!

Walking in the Spirit For Your Health

by Paola Tennon RN, BSN, MBA/HCA, CCM

“If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another” Galatians 5:25-26 KJV. The 2012 series of For Your Health articles embraces our faith from a mental aspect and incorporates topics that deal with the mind, mental awareness, mental wellness, spirituality and faith. The winter issue published in January 2012 was entitled “Where is your faith in God?” In this article, the primary focus centered on spirituality, faith and the physical benefits of healing associated with faith. The spring edition “Are You Clothed in Your Right Mind?” brought awareness to the causes and resulting effects of memory loss, in addition to, retention or prevention strategies for maintaining and enhancing memory. The summer edition “Human Behavior and Spirituality was intended to help us reflect on the choices we make, our attitudes towards others and the impact poor choices can have on our lives. Finally,

18 I Winter 2013

the fall edition, “Mental Wellness and Spirituality” only scratched the surface on the topic of mental health. It comprised subject matter on our belief system and the role that spirituality plays in our lives as it relates to mental health and mental wellness. Each article is unique in its own right; however, collectively they have one basic theme which incorporates our thought process or the way we think about things. Several definitions for thought are found in Webster’s Dictionary. For the purpose of this article we will only look at two. Thought is defined as the act or process of thinking, reflecting, meditation, cogitation; and secondly, the power of reasoning, conceiving ideas, intellect, imagination, and so on. Hurt feelings, frustration, anger, depression, and worry are just some of the things that can drastically change our thought pattern from being positive to being negative almost instantly. At times, we allow ourselves to fulfill the work of the Flesh which manifest in the form envy, jealousy, anger, and lawlessness. We surrender to the desirous and glamorous whims of the world, all of which led us to make bad decisions, poor choices.

We are driven by physical passion, peer pressures, lavishness and greed. When these issues began to tug at our heart, the resulting emotions opens the gateway and allows undesirable or negative thoughts to enter our minds. If left unaddressed these thoughts have the potential to show up in our actions. Scripture referenced in the Book of Proverbs 23:7, states that “as a man thinketh in his heart so is he”. This scripture suggest that our thoughts are actually depictions of what is in our heart and that they are what really motivate our thoughts. You may have heard it said that “what ever controls your mind controls you”. The theory of the Law of Attraction found in poplar culture embraces the concept that like attracts like and that thinking brings about positive and negative results. There is also a plethora of information that either embraces or rejects this theory. Regardless of the overwhelming discussions of the current day, we are encouraged in Romans 12:2-3 “…not to conform to this world: but be transformed by the renewing of our mind, that we may prove what is good, and acceptable and perfect will of God”. We are further encouraged in verse 3 “…not to think of ourselves more highly than we

From a Christian perspective we are to be vigilant in our quest to abstain from undesirable thoughts and to maintain a discipline of faith.

ordinarypeoplemagazine.org | 19

ought to think; but think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith”. From a Christian perspective we are to be vigilant in our quest to abstain from undesirable thoughts and to maintain a discipline of faith. Galatians chapter 5 teaches us how to be led by and how to walk in the Spirit. In this chapter the Apostle Paul encourages us not to fulfill the lust of the flesh, but rather we are to walk in the Spirit through faith. It is faith that enables us to overcome the challenges, trials, tribulations or circumstances that bombard us on a daily bases. Faith is our personal investment for our life and it is through faith that we are victorious. Walking in the Spirit entails walking in the sight of God as we are led and directed by the Holy Spirit. When we live and walk in the Spirit our actions are not only pleasing to God but they are also pleasing to our fellow man. One might ask the question: who is the Holy Spirit; why should we allow ourselves to be guided by Him, and what does this have to do with faith or even our health?

we walk by faith and not by sight we have the ability to endure the most trying of situations regardless of the circumstance. (2Chorinthians 5:7)

“What so ever things are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report; if there be any virtue and if there be any praise, think on these things. Philippians 4:8.” One way to maintain a discipline of faith as we allow ourselves to be led by the Spirit is to consider the qualities of the Fruit of the Spirit and utilize them as a guide. This fruit will yield joy, love, peace, longsuffering (patience), gentleness (kindness), goodness, faithfulness (faith), meekness (gentleness), and temperance or self-control (Galatians 5:2223). Concentration and focus on these qualities can change our perception and perspective on any given situation. Our emotional state, mental acuity, and spiritual fortitude can be enhanced and as we become more empowered with positive thoughts our overall physical outcomes can be improved. In the book “Three Magic Words: The Key to Power and Personal Peace” the author, U. S. Andersen, states; “We attract into our lives the physical manifestations of the thoughts we think, and in order to attract good instead of evil we must learn to control our thinking. To think positively instead of negatively, we must be able to choose good thoughts.” Simply put, we have the ability to endure or overcome many circumstances based on how we perceive and think about them.

One way to maintain a discipline of faith as we allow ourselves to be led by the Spirit is to consider the qualities of the Fruit of the Spirit and utilize them as a guide.

The Holy Spirit, also known as the Comforter, the Advocate, the Encourager, and Holy Ghost, is the third person of the Trinity (God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit). The reason this is important is found in 1 Corinthians 6:11 which reminds us that we were once lost in sin; but as Christians, our sins have now been washed away. We are now sanctified and justified in the name of Jesus and by the Spirit of God. The Holy Spirit is first referenced in The Old Testament book of Genesis 1: 2 “… and the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” In The New Testament He is first referenced in Mathew 1:18; “…. she (Mary) was found with child of the Holy Ghost. When we allow ourselves to be guided by the Holy Spirit our actions, deeds and thoughts are Christ like. When we choose to walk in the Spirit we choose to walk in the path of Jesus by faith. Consequently, as we walk we grow in grace and our maturity as Christians also grows as we become more finely tuned. Jesus states in Matthew 8:45 that “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth that which is good…” An example of positive thinking is reflective in research models and has shown to have resulted in improved physical outcomes in many cases. Research conducted at Duke University, as well as, John Hopkins University both suggest that of the people studied, those with positive attitudes towards their health tended to live longer and had more positive outcomes. On the other hand, those with a poor image of their health were inclined not to do well. From a psychological viewpoint studies have also shown that there is less frailness and memory loss in people who maintained a positive attitude. These are just a few of the many studies which suggest that we actually have the potential to improve our quality of life through positive thoughts. If we can only remember that

20 I Winter 2013

In poplar culture there is a plethora of theories, concepts and ideas that address the benefits of positive thought or positive thinking and the power of the mind in self help, self improvement, self motivation and etc. The purposed benefits are believed to: 1. yield financial success and prosperity, 2. enhance relationships, 3. motivate us to a level of success in what ever area we may choose including health, and 4. be a cure that leads to a happier self. There are also controversial theories that refute the beliefs associated with positive thinking. One such study published in Psychological Science entitled “The Dark Side of Self-Help”, suggest that positive thinking may actually attribute to worsening of ones self –esteem if a goal that was previously set was not reached. The resulting outcomes lead to more negative thoughts, attitudes and actions. It is during these times that our faith is weakened rather than strengthened. As we take a closer look from a health perspective, we can see the potential for negative effects on one’s emotional, mental and physical wellbeing. This becomes evidence when we allow our emotions, feelings or situations to consume every aspect of our lives. We become discouraged, depressed and weary. Additionally, our attitude becomes the driving factor that impacts our outcomes and our wellbeing takes a potentially harmful turn. Negative health effects can then present in the form of depression, eating disorders, anxiety, exacerbation of chronic diseases including high blood pressure and heart disease which are associated with increased and

sustained stress, just to name a few. This is because the way we perceive a situation often dictates how we will respond to it. There is also a growing body of medical and psychological research on the power of positive and negative thinking. Some research even champions the idea that negative thought can be used to supersede those of positive thinking thereby enhancing the probability to be less happy. The premise is that by decreasing the fear associated with failure one would in turn become less distressed. Regardless to the concept you may choose to believe, remember that how you perceive a situation often dictates how you will respond. In the end, it is important for us to realize that God is in control of all things and we are to seek a relationship with Him if we are to be victorious or successful in this life. The Apostle Paul tells us in Romans 8:14 that all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God” NLT. He reinforces this in verse 16 when he says that the Holy Spirit speaks to us deep in our hearts and tells us that we are the children of God. “Fret not thyself because of evil doers, neither be thou envious against workers of iniquities. Trust in the Lord, and do good… Delight thyself also in the Lord and He shall give the desires of thine heart.” Psalm 37:1-4. Remembering, when we walk in the Spirit we walk by faith. And, when we walk in the Spirit the fruit we bear is reflective of our relationship with God which exemplifies love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness and self control. Strategies to help accentuate positive and negative thought: 1. We must understand that both positive and negative thoughts and events co-exist. 2. Rethinking how we perceive a given situation is crucial. 3. When we face an obstacle, rather than trying to navigate around it embrace it. You will find the instead of a stumbling block it becomes a stepping stone.

4. Showing gratitude for the things that come your way and realize the blessings in your life. 5. Find importance in even the smallest things such as being nice to a stranger, or giving thanks when you find a penny.

Also emerging as a big winner, Marvin Sapp took Artist of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year and Traditional Male of the Year. whose high-energy performance of their nominated hit song “Go Get It” brought the sold-out audience to its feet. At the pre-show ceremonies on held Friday twenty (20) additional winners received awards. Traditional Group/Duo of the Year and Quartet of the Year went to The Williams Brothers, who in a gracious show of appreciation gave their award to Tim Rodgers and The Fellas, and acknowledged them as the new generation quartet. Newcomer Le’Andria Johnson was awarded Contemporary Female of the Year and New Artist of the Year for her debut album “The Awakening of Le’Andria Johnson.” Tye Tribbett opened the show and set the tone for a memorable evening with a rousing, energetic delivery of his song “If He Did It Before, He Can Do It Again.” Full of dynamic, spiritfilled performances and collaborations, other key Stellar Awards show highlights included a

special tribute to the late Inez Andrews, this year’s recipient of the Ambassador Dr. Bobby Jones Legends Award. The moving segment was presented by Dr. Jones and followed by a medley that featured “Indescribable” by Kierra Sheard, “Jesus Will” by Anita Wilson, “I Promise” by Y’Anna Crawley, and “So In Love” by Amber Bullock. Original Caravans Shirley Caesar, Dorothy Norwood and Delores Washington then delivered a powerful, uplifting arrangement of “Mary Don’t You Weep” as the Andrews family looked on from the front row. A longtime Stellar Awards supporter, Andrews passed away last month. “The live telecast of the 28th annual Stellar Awards was precedent setting in many ways and far exceeded all of our expectations,” said Executive Producer and Central City Productions Chairman Don Jackson. “The anticipation of ‘going live’ for the first time in the 28 year history of the Stellar Awards created an air of excitement with our entire production crew, co-hosts Kirk Franklin and Mary Mary, as well as all of our nominees, performers and presenters. As a result, it was a historical evening in many ways - from the sold-out seating, to our live backstage online stream and full-to-capacity red carpet and media center, it was a night of ‘firsts.’ I applaud my entire team for the countless hours spent on pre-production which enabled us to have a smooth and on time event.”

Other big moments in the show included Tamela Mann’s soul-stirring rendition of “Take Me to the King”; a holy-spirit infused traditional medley featuring “I Got This” by Dottie Peoples, “Awesome God” by Maurette Brown Clark, “Draw Me Close” by Marvin Winans and a rousing duet of “Who Would’ve Thought” by Donnie McClurkin and Marvin Winans that became a foot-stomping, hand-clapping revival. In addition, Marvin Sapp, Charles Jenkins, Israel Houghton & New Breed all delivered powerhouse performances to the delight of the full-to-capacity crowd. The show recognized the great accomplishments of some of Gospel’s brightest stars and extraordinary individuals who have made an impact on society. Global inspirational leader, author, producer, philanthropist and entrepreneur Bishop T.D. Jakes received the Thomas A. Dorsey Most Notable Achievement Award for his 35 years of ministry and humanitarian work. In a moving acceptance speech, Bishop Jakes expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the honor, acknowledging God, his wife, family and supporters for making this day possible. “It has been amazing. When I think back 36 years ago, I would never have imagined I’d be standing here today and I want to say thank you,” said Jakes. “In the words of my mother, whenever you see a turtle sitting on a fencepost, always remember he didn’t get there by himself.”

Kurt Carr, protégé to the renowned Reverend Cleveland, received the James Cleveland Lifetime Achievement Award for his accomplishments, presented by Bishop Paul S. Morton and serenaded by Byron Cage and the Kurt Carr Singers. “To God be the glory, what an incredible honor this is,” said Carr. “It’s a privilege to write Gospel music and stand on this stage in front of my peers receiving this award,” he added. “I thank all of you and Reverend James Cleveland who gave me my start.”

A modern day polio, West Nile Virus (WNV) is a growing epidemic for which there is no vaccine, no cure, no treatment and no answers while the number of those infected skyrocket into thousands. Recently an article in the Washington Post stated scientists believe WNV mutated into a more severe strand broadening its reach to include young people and those with no underlying health issues. Not in a third world country but today in America people are dying due to a mosquito bite. The Center for Disease Control says the only way not to get WNV is not to get bitten. Basically once you’ve been bitten, that’s it.

ver the summer my teenage daughter Jordan went outside onto our balcony for a moment of fresh air. Almost immediately she was bitten by a mosquito. She returned inside never giving it a second thought. A few days later I rushed her to the hospital after finding her nearly comatose. The mosquito bite infected my child with West Nile Meningoencephalitis. I had the doctors repeat it because it was surreal. (Among other things, lol!) I 28 I Winter 2013

“West Nile bites like hell” possible for her to make miraculous progress. Our story made local and national news, headlines said “Teen Fought West Nile and Won”. We didn’t know the fight just begun. The elusive predatory nature of West Nile plays hide and seek while viral effects run its course through your brain leaving a devastating aftermath of neurological damage ready to begin its game of cat and mouse. Jordan, an energetic high school sophomore honor student in all pre AP classes with aspirations to be a surgeon suffers from multiple rare disorders prohibiting her to attend school. The greatest concern is for her life due to the progressive decline in her health. I hold back my tears when I find myself wondering if this holiday season is the last my son & I share with Jordan. All over one mosquito bite?! Really?!!

physically, emotionally, mentally and financially. My days are consumed fighting to fulfill her survival and recovery needs all the while ensuring her younger brother Max doesn’t feel invisible or less important. West Nile invaded America nearly 14 years ago yet very little is known about the virus. Previously I didn’t take WNV seriously. Now I can lose everything beginning with what’s most important, my daughter’s life. Don’t risk your family, loved ones and community by underestimating West Nile. Currently the only protection against this deadly virus is prevention. You need to tell Congress that’s not good enough. WNV is going to infect more families thus crippling this great nation of ours if we don’t do something now. West Nile already infected my family there’s no reason why it should affect yours too. No one else should bear the bite of West Nile.

Let The Lady Speak

Get it

Right! by Evangelist Rhonda B. Hurst

H

If we want to grow and mature in the Lord, we must be able to correctly understand God’s message to us. Many men and women have a diverse range of explanations and versions for things in the Holy Bible.

owever, we do not always get them right or put them in the proper perspective. The most important thing that we can do in studying the Bible is to keep the words in their context. We should examine basic questions, such as: Who wrote, or spoke, it? To whom were they writing or speaking to? Where did they live? Why did they write or speak this message to that person, or those people? When was it written? What was the outcome expected? All these things help us put the Word into geographical and historical perspective. We should learn to examine verses before and after the one being considered, as they are part of a

longer message. We should also compare similar teachings in other books of the Bible. As part of our Christian growth, we need to know how to study the Bible correctly. Otherwise, we will either misunderstand what we read, or we will allow others to teach us incorrectly. Many Christians today do not see the necessity of studying at all, saying that the Holy Spirit teaches them everything that they need to know. Certainly Not! Some Christians say that they do not have to study because their Pastor does the studying for them. II Timothy 2:15 admonishes us to, “Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” We must understand that the Bible is the inspired Word of God. It is His written Instruction ordinarypeoplemagazine.org | 31

Book to all mankind. It answers every important question that we may have in life. It explains how we should live and it reveals the road to salvation. The apostle Paul tells us that proper Bible study leads to approval from God. The same verse also speaks of other benefits. First, as workmen, we need not be ashamed. If we study God’s Word we will discover that our studying becomes fulfilling and satisfying. We are doing what God expects us to do which should also bring an acceptable type of self-approval to Christians. Rightly dividing the Word of Truth—knowing the Bible, inside and out—takes a lifetime. God’s Holy Spirit opens one’s mind to this spiritual understanding (Psalms 119:18; John 16:13). True biblical knowledge and understanding come from diligent effort and God’s Spirit working in us.

knowledge of the Lord. We must do the things that we have learned to be true. We must grow in the Lord. If we do not mature to the point that we can do what God instructs us to do, then our house, our lives and our hopes will not stand. Let’s get it right! How do we get our life right? We must make an effort to understand the foundational truth of the trustworthiness of God and His Holy Word. As we believe God, and take Him at His Word, we will begin to learn more about His love for us. When we learn to appreciate God’s Word and His genuine love for us, then we will be inspired to get it right! If we get His Word right, we can get our lives rights. Knowing God’s Word will help us rightly apply it to our life and everyday living.

We must make an effort to understand the foundational truth of the trustworthiness of God and His Holy Word. As we believe God, and take Him at His Word, we will begin to learn more about His love for us.

God not only expects us to familiarize ourselves with His Word but he wants us to appreciate it and act on it. Only by studying and fully appreciating God’s Word will we act on it. God expects us to not only get ourselves to church and to act like a Christian on Sunday, but to live our lives according to His guidance as spelled out in Scripture – whether or not anyone else sees our choices. 1 John 2:6 is a powerful reminder that we have to live our faith out loud: “whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.” (NIV) Our daily actions and interactions will increasingly reflect the principles and truths of Jesus as we pray, grow, and have faith in God. Beloved, we must understand that getting God’s Word right, will help us get our lives right. It is not enough to study the word of God. It is not enough to learn it. Nor is it enough to continue to add to our

Scripture tells us in many ways that if we are truly Christians, and say we love Jesus, then we will follow His teachings and be obedient to God. Jesus taught His disciples the necessity for obedience in straight forward teachings such as “whoever has my commands and keeps them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by My Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him.” (John 14:21, NIV) It’s time to get it right!

Excuses

ncle Zack was the kind of a man who could never admit when he was wrong – never, under any circumstances! No matter the situation, in Zack’s mind he was always justified in his behavior, even if no one else agreed with him. One day old Zack got curious and wandered into the local blacksmith’s shop. As he entered, he spotted a horseshoe resting all alone on a pile of sawdust. Now Zack had no way of knowing that the blacksmith after wrestling with this particular shoe in the fire for some time, had gotten frustrated and simply tossed it down onto the sawdust to cool. Therefore, the horseshoe was extremely hot. Of course

this all happened just before old Zack walked into the shop. Without saying a word to the busy blacksmith, Zack just walked over, kneeled down and picked up the horseshoe with his hand. The expression on Zack’s face and the way he quickly tossed the hot horseshoe aside clearly gave evidence that Zack realized he had made a huge mistake. Having witnessed the entire incident, the blacksmith amusingly commented, “Pretty hot, huh, Zack?” To which old Zack replied, “Heck, no! Just doesn’t take me long to look at a horseshoe!” Like old Zack, sometimes the most difficult thing any of us can do is face the truth about ourselves. When we offer up excuses or seek to justify words or behavior on our part which

are unacceptable, we give evidence that we are neither ready nor willing to face the real truth—God’s truth. Perhaps the most important first step for any of us is to truly see ourselves as God sees us. Our willingness to take this crucial first step means we have come to a point in our lives where we are ready to abandon our truth and accept God’s truth about everything, including ourselves. In the final analysis, God’s truth is the only truth that really matters. However, when we are unwilling to take this first step, we find ourselves relegated to a perpetual state of pursuing an inner peace that always seems somehow to elude us. Why? It is because we spend our days endlessly serving the triune god of me, myself, and I. Such a life ordinarypeoplemagazine.org | 33

cannot become self-less because it is selfish. Such a life cannot become Christ-centered because it is self-centered. As Christians it is absolutely important that we seek the mind of our Lord in all matters and in every aspect of our lives on a moment-by-moment basis. Proverbs 3:5-6 commands us to trust the Lord with all of our heart and to never lean on our own understanding. Why not? It is because when we embrace any agenda other than God’s for our lives, our heart may deceive us as Jeremiah’s words warn in Jeremiah 17:9. While it is true we cannot always trust our own heart, it is equally true that we can always trust the heart of God. The proverb goes on to say that in all of our ways we should acknowledge the Lord, and He will direct our paths. To trust in the Lord with all of our heart and to acknowledge Him in all our ways makes us extremely sensitive to the still small voice of God. It enables us to see ourselves as He sees us. It also enables us to discern how other people perceive us. Do they perceive us as loving? How about forgiving? Do our lives reflect the characteristics of the fruit of the Holy Spirit?

free, without first acknowledging he or she has an alcohol problem. No drug addict becomes rehabilitated without first acknowledging he or she has a drug problem, and no sinner truly gets saved without first acknowledging he or she is a sinner. The same principle applies to you and me. If we desire God’s help, we must first recognize that we need God’s help. We must be willing to truly see ourselves as God sees us. It is a true statement that God loves us just the way we are. But, it is equally true, that God loves us too much to leave us the way we are. In this life, you and I cannot decide what happens to us, but we can decide what happens in us. If you are already a Christian, it is never too late to start doing the right thing. You may be asking what that is. If so, and that is your question, please pray the following: Dear Heavenly Father, I understand that it is only because of Your mercies that we are not consumed. Your compassions fail not. They are new every morning. Great is Your faithfulness. Lord, I am truly sorry for my waywardness and allowing my will, not Yours, to become my chief priority. Because of it, I have continually excused my words, my thoughts, and my behavior. I am sorry. I no longer want to talk, think, or live that way. I desire for me only that which You desire for me—that in my life You will be glorified. I am asking for Your forgiveness. Please cleanse me from all my sin, dear Lord. It is Your will, and Your will alone that I seek, and the life of Christ which I choose to live. Give me this day a servant’s spirit and a surrendered heart before You. And from this moment forward give me the power to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly before You. I ask these things in Jesus’ name. Amen. “I used to ask God to help me. Then I asked if I might help Him. I ended up by asking Him to do his work through me.”

And a sinner is not a sinner because he sins. He sins because he is a sinner. Everything and everyone acts according to their nature.

When used as a verb, the word “excuse” means to pardon or to forgive someone. However, when used as a noun, the word “excuse” refers to a statement made or a reason given that frees one from blame or duty. The question we have to ask ourselves is how are we using this word in our own lives? Are we using the word “excuse” as a verb, or are we using it as a noun? As Christians, are we following the example of our Lord by forgiving others and pardoning their transgressions against us, or are we just simply making excuses as to why we will refuse to do so? We have to remember that in our lives there can never truly be change without until there is first change from within. What about you? Have you been guilty of excusing your words, your thoughts, and your behavior, which you know inwardly are not right? Are you ready to acknowledge this before God and allow Him to make you into the person He created you to be? Remember, no alcoholic becomes alcohol

Inspirational Words

Are You Walking in Step with the Spirit? “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. (Galations 5:25 NIV) We are beginning an exciting time in each of our lives, a new year, a new beginning, a time to renew ourselves with God and our fellow man. 2013 is a year chock full of promise for us as a people that choose to walk and stay in step with the Spirit. The Spirit wants us to conform to his standards, line up and follow his instructions. Staying in alignment with the Spirit includes using the tools we presented to you in previous articles in 2012; faith, trust and walking in victory. When we get in step and imitate the ways of the Spirit we are empowered to live as we were designed.

Walking in the Spirit….Observe the ways of the spirit, study the ways of the Spirit and walk according to the Spirit that is within us. Galations 5:22 tells us But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Our brother Paul is telling us that we are to walk in the ways of the spirit and in order to do that we are to deny ourselves (flesh) and willing be guided by the Spirit. Galations 5:16 reminds us to walk by the spirit and we will not gratify the desires of the flesh. And we know when we walk in our flesh it includes sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. In order to gracefully walk in step with the Spirit, we must lose the legalism that many of use as a crutch to justify why we feel empowered to criticize or gossip about our brothers and sisters in their fallen state. It is incredibly easy to point a finger and shake our head in dismay when others have gone astray. In the same vein, it is easier to show compassion, pray and offer

a helping hand to them by walking in step with the Spirit. We are to use the same grace that was freely given to us over and over again. We are to serve one another humbly in love. When we are led by the Spirit, we are not under the law (v 18), that means we are to conduct ourselves as grace givers. Let’s remember to measure the ways of the Spirit as a barometer in our behavior and actions before we inflict more hurt, humiliation or alienation on a fallen comrade. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other (v. 26) l; rather let’s do as our leader commands us by following his instructions in the Bible. Our action plan for 2013 should include putting into practice daily to purposely walk in the Spirit. Let’s make a determined effort to display more grace as well as the sweet and nurturing fruits of the Spirit to everyone we come in contact with. So join me in 2013, as I learn more of the Spirit; demonstrate the grace of the Spirit, disdain legalism and line up with the Spirit!! Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Happy New Year!
