Faith on the Move As we embark upon a New Year, many will spend time trying to make good on New Year’s resolutions, while others will have already failed. If this year is like others, it will present many challenges and obstacles that can be exhausting emotionally and physically. However, knowing that God has never left or forsook us encourages one to be hopeful of things yet to come. It is our faith in Jesus Christ that brings us through and reminds us that through Him, all things are possible. This issue of Ordinary People focuses on faith. Hebrews 11:1 states, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” (KJV). In For Your Health, Paola Tennen establishes the connection between faith and healing and encourages us to lock into our ultimate power source, Jesus Christ. In Consider This, Vanderbilt Brabson III, reminds us that peer pressure is a considerable influence for both adults and children. As believers we must tap into the power of God and use Him as our standard rather than looking for the answers in others. In Let The Lady Speak, Rhonda Hurst encourages us to change, to grow, and to modify our behaviors rather than focus on New Year resolutions. Not only does she provide encouragement; she outlines a process to overcome the challenges of change. In Inspirational Word, Paris Ducker tells us to put our Faith in Action. That faith requires activity, movement through praise, praying, and diligently seeking God. Christ is our rock, and our reliance on Him requires relationship. My friends, find a place where you can reserve quiet time with God daily. Open your heart to Him and trust that He will lead you, provide for you, and meet your needs. Have faith and watch God move in your life. Ask God to open your spiritual eyes to see His hand moving in your life today, tomorrow, and always. Remember, God wants the very best for you. You just have to have faith in Him.

In Him, India B. Oliver Editor-in-Chief

Miracles and Blessings

“The Hole in My Heart” – The Cassie Young Story

This is a true life story of Miracles and Blessing; of a fourteen year old abused wife and mother whose child was abducted by his own father. Mrs. Young tells about her faith in God and knowing with God all things are possible. “I will tell the world of God’s blessings in my life. After you read a little about my story you will see God’s grace all around me. Through all the turmoil in my life one can truly see the Lord upon me. To know that what is impossible for man is possible with God. Knowing when you are at your wit’s end there is Jesus standing by.”----Mrs. Cassie Young In 1966 at the age of fourteen, I met and married a man twice my age. Not listening to my mother’s advice almost cost me my life. You might say that I was an ugly duckling at the time and this man showed me all of the attention I thought I needed and wanted. In the beginning everything was great but all at once I was introduced to beatings, rapes, kicks, and even being urinated on, all in the name of “I love you”. Everything in the word of abuse had been done to me: black eyes, burst ear drums, broken arms, and much more. I felt like a caged animal with no way out. I had blamed God for allowing this man to hurt me so bad. Yes, I had the nerve to do that. I thank God for Jesus because he picked my prayers up and took them to the Father on my behalf. Praise God! Bruises became a part of my life. There were daily beatings. Why? There was no reason, he didn’t need one. I know now that God was not the blame. If only I had listened to my mother and God, but I just needed to find out for myself that this wasn’t what I wanted or needed. I had walked away from my mother’s teaching and had put God

on the back burner like some of us still do. Praise be to God, He doesn’t give us what we deserve. His grace and mercy keeps us day by day. We must go through some things in order to get to where God wants us to be. All the abuse and pain was for God to get the glory when he brought me out. You can pray, praise, and shout your way out. There is a light at the end of the tunnel and that light is Jesus. The kicks, the stomps, there was still even worse things to come. I had told my mother I couldn’t even pray anymore because God didn’t hear me. My mother said, “Sister just keep praying, God hears all prayers of his children.” Then it happened! My son at the age of seven months was ripped from my arms and it would be over 38 years before I would see him again. He was even told I had died at his birth. Oh, but my God, he found me! My God, my God! The devil meant it for bad but my God flipped the script. Impossible for man -- but God all things are possible. ordinarypeoplemagazine.org | 23

I am a blessed kept woman, kept by the power of God. It was over 38 years to man but in God’s eye sight it wasn’t even a day. Because with God a day is a like a thousand years and a thousand years is like a day. For our time is not the Lord’s time. Bless His holy name. Look at what God had done. He leaded my son back to me. He told me, “Mom, even though I was told all my life that you were dead I had felt like you just weren’t dead.’ There was a “Hole in My Heart”, but God has mended it. Thank you Jesus, for my miracles and my blessings. God is still in the miracle and blessing business. Just pray a little while longer don’t give up on God He will never give up on you. I am a living witness. I know it was God’s hand on my life the day my son was taken from me. I felt his little legs slip out of my hands. I asked God to help me and that is just what he did. He gave me the strength to endure the years without my son. The God I serve, He is an on time God. He had never left me alone. There had been times in my life that I couldn’t feel His presence, but He was there all the time. Prayer is the key, and faith unlocks the door. The Bible says man should always pray. Prayer is a gift from God; we can talk to him through our prayers. What a blessing! Just to believe that God is, is not enough. God’s word to us states, “As you believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord, then you are saved.” The truth is that I disobeyed my mother when she had told me this man was too old for me and I didn’t know what I was doing. Was she ever right! If I had listened I wouldn’t have been beat and stabbed; well not at the age of fourteen anyway. But I thank God he didn’t turn his back on me. I am so thankful that I did have a relationship with God because His love for me and you is real and pure. In 2007 I founded and started Under His Wings Ministry to let victims know I am somebody in Christ. A nonprofit organization dedicated to teaching God’s word and healing from domestic violence. I am a survivor! Thank you Jesus.

And every victim can be through Christ Jesus. Jesus said, “I came that you may have life more abundantly. Forgiving is a big part in your healing we must forgive in order for our Father in heaven to forgive us. When I think of all the years without my son, I know true miracles and blessings from my Lord are real. I didn’t lose my mind, praise God, He kept me sane and when I could no longer stand the pain He came and stood right beside me and held me and told me I was his own and He loved me. No weapon formed against me shall proper. He kept me moving by this the Lord is my life whom shall I fear? Psalm 30:5b “Weeping endure for a night but joy cometh in the morning.” As always I live by this Motto, Matthew 19:26, “But Jesus beheld them and said unto them, with man this is impossible but with God all things are possible.” (KJV)

Whether it is a slight change to the body style or improvements to the performance features, today’s automobile manufacturers are making the necessary modifications to make their cars, trucks and SUVs more appealing in every way. This should be the same standard for us as today’s Christians. Each year we should pause and make an assessment of what will make us and our lives better. We should be open to making personal modifications that will help make us more appealing to God. Have you ever wondered why we bother to make New Year Resolutions? We never keep them! They sound really good in January and February but usually by March; our New Year Resolutions have literally “marched” right out of our minds. group of forty-nine students were secretly asked by a professor to take part in an experiment. The professor drew and labeled two chalk lines on the board. As part of the experiment, he instructed the fortynine students to all agree that the line labeled as “A” was the longer of the two lines when asked, although it was obvious to everyone present that line “B” was at least four or five inches longer. Once the students understood these simple instructions, they were dismissed and instructed to return at a designated time. The students later reconvened in the classroom at the appointed time; however, this time they were joined by a student who was not aware of the professor’s experiment and previous briefing. The professor directed the students’ attention to the chalk board and instructed them to raise their hands when he pointed to the longer of the two lines already drawn in chalk on the board. When the professor pointed to the shorter line labeled “A”, all

forty-nine of the students quickly raised their hand in agreement that this was the longer of the two lines. The unsuspecting student looked all around the classroom and was utterly amazed to see all hands up, except his; agreeing line “A” was the longer line. Unwilling to be different, the student slowly slipped his hand up in the air. Most of us dismiss “peer pressuritis” as a disease, which afflicts only the young. However, this malady is no respecter of age or person, striking both young and old, Christian and non-Christian alike. For the Christian, succumbing to peer pressure is merely symptomatic of a more grave condition—misplaced priorities. When our priorities become misplaced, the first thing that suffers is our relationship with God. And when our relationship with God suffers, the power and effectiveness of our ordinarypeoplemagazine.org | 27

Christian witness suffer as well. Most of us would quickly argue, “Wait just a minute, I would never have raised my hand like that student did in the classroom with forty-nine other students. Well, let’s look at this in a little different way. When you and I laugh aloud at those really crude, inappropriate jokes told by nonbelieving coworkers, classmates, and friends, are we not raising our hand? When we intentionally ostracize someone because a friend, family member, or associate of ours dislikes that particular person, are we not raising our hand? When we engage in activities on our job or at school, which we know violate Christian principles just to be considered a team player, are we not raising our hand? When we overspend, trying desperately to keep up with the Jones, are we not raising our hand? It’s been said, “Any old dead fish can flow downstream.” It takes a live fish to swim upstream against the current. Likewise, it takes a Christian with the right priorities to stand and march against the current tide of popular opinion and peer pressure. The psalmist declared, Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly; nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scournful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law doth he meditate day and night (Psalm 1:1-2). The psalmist recognizes our unsaved friends and associates can have a profound effect on our lives. However, he points out God’s blessings are promised to believers who are not distracted by such associations. Instead, the blessed believer delights him- and herself in studying and meditating upon the scriptures to glean from them daily wisdom and insight for living. The psalmist goes on to say, And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper (Psalm 1:3). As believers, nowhere in scripture are we commanded to avoid associations with nonbelievers. There is no better way to witness to someone than through association. However, believers cannot afford to become distracted and influenced

28 | Winter 2012

by such associations. To prevent this from happening, we are encouraged by the scriptures to continually read and internalize God’s word. The blessing promised when we do this is our lives will be spiritually fruitful and prosperous (Galatians 5:22-23), and God will become first in our hearts and lives (Matthew 6:33). What about you? Have you succumbed to peer pressure? Are your associations with nonbelievers overly influencing you? Do you want—do you need God’s help in getting your priorities straight? If this is true, tell Him so. Please pray the following: Dear Heavenly Father, I admit I have not been seeking first Your kingdom and Your righteousness as Jesus said we should. I have allowed myself to become distracted by my associations and the lures of this world, and I am so very sorry. Please forgive me and cleanse me. Touch my heart right now and please be first in my heart and life. Give me wisdom and power for each day to obey You and to walk before You with an upright heart. I ask these things in Jesus’ name. Amen. “Character is always lost when a high ideal is sacrificed on the altar of conformity and popularity.” Charles Spurgeon. From Within... When every, I read or hear this scripture, I can’t help but to think of my youngest son, Shelton E. Oliver. From a small child, he had so much faith that it was frightened to me. I’m not sure how he came about his faith, how it happened or when it happened, but it was, and still is unbelievable. I must confess, at one time I wished that I had his type of faith. The kind that you never question rather something would happen, but knew that it will happen without a shadow of a doubt.

“Now faith is the substance of things hope for, the evidence of things not seen.” Heb. 11:1 (KJV)

I remember listening to a sermon once and the minister mention “faith the size of a mustard seed” in his text. Instantly, I wanted to see what a mustard seed looked like. How could I compare this faith to the mustard seed size? In fact, the mustard seed is very small, not like any seed that I had seen before. So, if that was all the faith I needed, then what if I had faith larger than the mustard seed? Was this the faith that my young son had? And so, it is the faith of my young son whom I gained the same faith to dream, to explore, and to live. Having the faith to believe that the impossible will become the possible! Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.” Heb. 11-3 And as always, Love, Peace, and Increase…
