Dear Friends, It is my pleasure to welcome you to the EmPOWERED To Serve™ Summit on the beautiful campus of Gallaudet University. Thank you for joining us in Washington, D.C. and for sharing your knowledge, insights and passion to improve the cardiovascular health of ALL Americans. Today’s gathering is focused on the central role that “social determinants of health” play in our long-term risk of heart disease, stroke, and other devastating illnesses. We have seen a tremendous decline in cardiovascular deaths thanks to advances in prevention and treatment, but those advantages are not shared equally across economic, racial, and ethnic groups in the United States. Every community is managing unique challenges and obstacles to achieve optimal health. We have several breakout discussions today to allow our attendees to exchange ideas to help overcome these barriers. Among our esteemed panelists, we are honored to be joined by the top ten finalists from the EmPOWERED To Serve Urban Business Storytelling competition. They were chosen from nearly 130 competitors for their innovative solutions to improve access to health and well-being. Three of the finalists, as determined by a panel of judges, will win funding to activate their solutions in their chosen communities. I can’t wait to see the results. I’d like to give a special thanks to our hosts and EmPOWERED To Serve Ambassadors Mark and Brenda Moore, and to our Mid-Atlantic Affiliate staff and National Multicultural Markets and Communications staff who have devoted countless hours to creating today’s innovative program. I look forward to seeing you, and to continuing our important work together to overcome health disparities in every community. Warmest regards,

Nancy Brown Chief Executive Officer American Heart Association/ American Stroke Association

Welcome! Thank you for joining us here in our Nation’s Capital for the EmPOWERED To Serve Summit. Over the next two days we have the opportunity to discuss solutions to complex issues, and create a shared vision for transforming the health of our communities. I am grateful for the dedication of each of you to addressing the barriers and fighting for optimal health for everyone. I’d like to thank Mark and Brenda Moore for their commitment to helping others. Without their leadership and vision, this event would not have been possible. I’d also like to thank the National and MidAtlantic American Heart Association staff who planned this event and brought us all together. There is much work ahead, but I look forward to our dialogue the next couple of days and our collective impact in the future. Thank you for being here, and for the important work you do.
