Founded in 1988, the VMC Foundation has raised $85 million in support of vital health programs and services since inception. The Foundation also plays an important advocacy role to educate the public and opinion leaders on the role of SCVMC in the community. In addition to fundraising, the VMC Foundation maintains an event planning and program management arm to assist SCVMC with the execution of special events, conferences and other activities, as well directly operating programs such as Reach Out and Read, patient wireless internet access, the VMC Farmers’ Market and more. Lastly, the VMC Foundation performs a vital administrative role within the SCVMC ecosystem. This function includes project management and reporting for grants, administration (i.e. accounting, deposits and disbursements) of 150 unique funds and the preparation of financial statements, audits and tax filings as required.

Let’s agree on this; 2016 wasn’t boring. I suppose that saying 2016 was an eventful year would be The Understatement of 2016! A lot happened, that’s for sure, and at the VMC Foundation we’re proud of several things that made the year memorable – in a good way. First, we were instrumental in advocating for a Santa Clara County bond measure to fight the homelessness crisis. County Measure A passed by a single percentage point in November. That means our efforts to educate, urge other nonprofits to help and to secure donations was pivotal. The result? A billion dollars for supportive housing. Why did we do it? Frankly, because the homelessness crisis IS a healthcare crisis. Second, we had a great party around the opening of Valley Health Center Downtown. Eight years in the planning and building, this new full-service clinic is a result of Measure A’s 2008 passing. It’s beautiful, it’s needed and it’s here for everyone. Third, our work to create San Jose’s first Women and Children’s Center has progressed. New plans for mega-scale public art and a re-imagining of the 5th floor of the building are just the beginning. We can’t wait for construction to start. Fortunately, we won’t wait long. The opening of the Sobrato Pavilion in late 2017 has me pretty excited…and once done, the Women and Children’s Center ramps up. Come visit! I’d love to show you the amazing changes happening on SCVMC’s campus, and share how you, your corporation or your family foundation can be part of it all.

E. Christopher Wilder, CEO The Valley Medical Center Foundation

Letter from the CEO of the VMC Foundation

In Service,

5

W

hen I joined the Board of Directors of the VMC Foundation five years ago, I was a man on a mission. I’ve long believed in the value of service and community involvement, but my desire to serve this Foundation had a personal appeal. Like millions of other Americans, the “Great Recession” hit my family hard. In addition to dealing with a spell of unemployment, I had to worry how a member of my family with a pre-existing, chronic illness would access the care they very much needed. There is a very particular kind of anxiety that comes with worrying about affording healthcare for your family; the kind that keeps you up at night and follows you through each and every day. Those who have been there know the feeling. So after navigating through that experience, I decided to devote my spare time to helping other families get access to the healthcare they need. It didn’t take me long to find my way to the VMC Foundation.

Letter from the Board Chairperson of the VMC Foundation

In my capacity as board member, and in the last three years as Chair, I’ve been fortunate to work alongside some of the best in the business. From our intrepid CEO Chris Wilder to the dedicated and passionate staff at the hospital, I’ve been inspired time and again by how much SCVMC does for this community.

6

I will end my term as Chair in December 2017, but my commitment to this great institution will stay just the same. There is too much at stake for me to walk away now. Because you never know when you or someone you love may need SCVMC, I – alongside thousands of others – are going to work hard to make sure it’s ready for you.

Ralph Dickman, Vice President, Union Bank Chairperson, VMC Foundation, 2014-2017

Dear Friends of the Valley Medical Center Foundation: For over 140 years, Santa Clara Valley Medical Center has been an integral part of the public healthcare delivery system here in Santa Clara County. Then, as now, our mission has been to provide high quality care and excellent service to everyone in our community. We’re proud of the comprehensive, compassionate and innovative healthcare services provided by our committed staff each and every day – here in our hospital and throughout our 11 health facilities conveniently located across Santa Clara County. We’re also proud of our dedication to quality, research, teaching, innovation, and most importantly, our focus on a positive patient experience. And so we’re pleased to debut our first ever Santa Clara County marketing campaign, entitled “Go Public!” It illustrates our roots as a public system while illuminating themes familiar to many who live here in the Silicon Valley. In addition to our new marketing campaign, we have changed our logo to ensure our community understands that we are a system of care, which includes the comprehensive services offered in our hospital and our multi-service clinics. The following narrative is our brand anthem, which succinctly yet compassionately expresses how we feel about our commitment to our community. Respectfully,

“Go Public”

SCVMC’S BRAND ANTHEM

In a place where going public is something many aspire to, we humbly went public day one.

Paul E. Lorenz Chief Executive Officer, SCVMC

Where capital gains are seen as enriching wealth, we seek gains by increasing health. Where some incubators back entrepreneurs, ours start up tiny lives. And the coding we do unlocks genetic secrets to better health. Yes, something happens when a bunch of big-hearted types in Silicon Valley are looking out for you, a lot of healthy innovation ensues. From inventively teaching one in four doctors valleywide, to employing digital health for the homeless. So no matter what side of the valley you’re on – whether tech nerd or ag nerd – our healing nerds are there for you. With the kinds of innovative care you’d expect here in the land of innovation. Making sure everyone’s health benefits. Isn’t that what being the people’s health activist is all about?

A New Health Center for Downtown San Jose

I

n 2004, the privately owned San Jose Medical Center abruptly closed, leaving the downtown core of northern California’s largest city without adequate access to healthcare services. After years of work on the part of local healthcare activists, the County of Santa Clara and the City of San Jose, and with an act of the voters, SCVMC opened a new, full-service health center at that same site in June 2016. The VMC Foundation was proud to play a lead role in the 2008 Measure A campaign that generated the funds to finance construction of the building. The measure also financed required seismic upgrades at the main SCVMC campus that will be complete in 2017. The 60,000 square foot facility includes an urgent care center, as well as pediatric, obstetrics, family medicine and behavioral health services. Onsite pharmacy, lab and radiology services mean faster care for patients. While not a hospital replacement, it represents the future of health care, with a focus on preventive, patient-centered and community-based care.

A Warm Welcome Letter from the Board Chair of the VMC Foundation for Visitors

A Warm Welcome for Visitors

S

ometimes the best solutions are the simple ones. First-time visitors to the SCVMC campus are often surprised by its size. With over 20 buildings, it is easy to get disoriented or lost. For patients who are ill, have mobility issues, or simply have never been here before, it can be overwhelming. The result is often missed or delayed appointments, causing disruption throughout the system. As part of ongoing efforts to improve patient navigation at SCVMC, the VMC Foundation purchased this welcome kiosk, staffed by volunteers, and placed it smack-dab in the middle of campus near the main visitor parking garage. Now all visitors have instant access to directions and answers to their questions.

s one of America’s leading physical rehabilitation centers, SCVMC has been a pioneer in the use of robotics in treating paralyzed or disabled patients. Since 2012, SCVMC has been using an Ekso, a bionic exoskeleton that allows patients to simulate walking as part of their rehabilitation. In 2016 – with funds donated to support the new Rehabilitation Center currently under construction – the VMC Foundation purchased an Ekso that can accommodate a wider range of patients. This continues an ongoing effort to equip SCVMC with the most advanced equipment so that clinicians can deliver the best possible results to their patients.

A Free Book for Every Child

T

hanks to the VMC Foundation’s Reach Out & Read program, every child at SCVMC ages 0-5 gets a free, developmentally appropriate book during their well-child exams. Started at the East Valley clinic in San Jose with grants from institutions like FIRST 5 Santa Clara County, Verizon, and the Myra Reinhard Foundation, the VMC Foundation launched the program back in 2005. Today, thanks to funding from the County of Santa Clara Department of Behavioral Health Services, it has become one of the largest programs of its kind in the nation, serving 7 locations and distributing more than 32,000 books in 2016. The program promotes reading between parent and child at an early age, and pediatricians use the books as a screening tool for learning disabilities and other cognitive delays. Just as important, it makes going to the doctor less scary and little more fun for SCVMC’s youngest patients.

A Victory to End Homelessness

W

The challenge, of course, is that good health is hard to maintain without a roof over one’s head. With one of the largest homeless populations in the United States, it is an issue that needs a comprehensive solution. The VMC Foundation, as part of a large community coalition, heeded a call for action in 2016, leading an effort to pass a historic bond measure that will raise $950 million to tackle the region’s homelessness crisis. The Foundation was a major donor to the campaign, and coordinated efforts to raise funds from other community benefit organizations. Measure A will bring new resources to the fight against homelessness, alleviate tremendous human suffering, and help SCVMC make more efficient use of its resources. It’s a win for the safety net, taxpayers and, most importantly, the people of this community. A Victory to End Homelessness

hile the VMC Foundation takes its name from the medical center it was founded to support, we define our mission in the broadest possible sense: to use philanthropy as a tool to strengthen the safety net and promote good health for the entire community. A person’s health does not exist on an island. It relates to a plethora of socioeconomic and environmental factors. Increasingly, one of the main factors that drives disparities in healthcare access (and costs) at SCVMC is housing. No other local health system provides more care to the homeless population than SCVMC. From the Emergency Department to a specialized, mobile team that provides care at shelters and homeless camps, SCVMC staff does heroic work to care for this population.

T

he Sorci family has deep roots in the Santa Clara Valley, with ties to the region’s agricultural past. Humble, kind and generous, they have been steadfast supporters of the VMC Foundation for nearly a decade. Their support helped purchase life-saving equipment for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and as donors to the Sobrato Pavilion Matching Campaign, they helped outfit SCVMC’s newest adult hospital building. The Sorcis are part of Santa Clara County history, and as such, it is fitting that they support one of the region’s most vital institutions.

Thomas Boström & Claire McCormack In Memory of Their Daughter, a Family Helps Others

T

he first thing that visitors see when they arrive on the Pediatric floor of Santa Clara Valley Medical Center is not much at all – an elevator lobby, white walls and linoleum. It’s a place to walk to and from and nothing more. All that is about to change…thanks to a little girl named Nora. Nora was born on December 11, 2009, in San Francisco. Within months, she was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension. Sadly, Nora passed away on November 22, 2013, in Palo Alto. Her parents, Thomas Boström and Claire McCormack, were Nora’s greatest champions, and since her passing have become fierce advocates for hospital safety and children’s health issues. With the support of family, friends and co-workers, Thomas and Claire created a fund at the Silicon Valley Community Foundation to honor Nora’s memory. Thanks to them, that SCVMC Pediatric lobby will be transformed into a warm, welcoming space filled with books and cozy places to sit and read.

The Golden Golf Challenge, an event imagined and conceived by Logitech’s Jonathan Johnson, is the charity golf tournament for people that actually care about the golf and a good cause. The 3-day event traverses three different courses in Las Vegas, attracting golfers from around the country. In only its second year, the event raised $65,000 for the VMC Foundation. Danielle Burks Rehab Patient Gives Back

Letter from Donor Spotlight: the Board Danielle Chair Burks of the VMC Foundation

A

t 27 years old and in top physical condition, Danielle Burks was a fitness trainer and high school strength and conditioning coach. Then, suddenly, the unthinkable happened. “It happened in the blink of an eye,” Danielle recalls, when she was working out at the San Jose gym she co-manages with her mother. “I was doing an advanced pull-up and I somehow fell off the bar and was completely airborne, about eight feet high. The next thing I knew, I was on the ground. I had fallen flat on my back. I instantly felt paralyzed from the waist down.” Paramedics rushed Danielle to SCVMC’s Level 1 Trauma Center, one of the Valley’s busiest emergency departments. She was diagnosed with a badly broken vertebrae and massive pressure on her spinal cord. After eight hours of surgery, Danielle woke up in the Trauma Intensive Care Unit and was able to wiggle the toes on her right foot. She remembers, “I was able to do it. Not a lot, but I could feel it. I knew I was going to be okay.” Danielle, pictured above with her mother Mary Burks, credits the expert team at SCVMC for her recovery, and in appreciation has begun work with the VMC Foundation to raise funds from the community. Like so many grateful patients, she is giving back so that SCVMC will always be at the ready for those in need.

INDEPENDENT AUDITORS’ REPORT To the Board of Directors of VMC Foundation, San Jose, California We have audited the accompanying financial statements of VMC Foundation (the “Foundation”, a California nonprofit public benefit corporation), which comprise the statements of financial position as of December 31, 2016 and 2015, and the related statements of activities and changes in net assets, functional expenses and cash flows for the years then ended, and the related notes to the financial statements. Management’s Responsibility for the Financial Statements Management is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of these financial statements in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America; this includes the design, implementation, and maintenance of internal control relevant to the preparation and fair presentation of financial statements that are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error. Auditors’ Responsibility Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these financial statements based on our audits. We conducted our audits in accordance with auditing standards generally accepted in the United States of America. Those standards require that we plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are free from material misstatement. An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements. The procedures selected depend on the auditors’ judgment, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial statements, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control relevant to the entity’s preparation and fair presentation of the financial statements in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the entity’s internal control. Accordingly, we express no such opinion. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of significant accounting estimates made by management, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial statements. We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion. Opinion

Financial Statements

In our opinion, the financial statements referred to above present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of VMC Foundation as of December 31, 2016 and 2015, and the changes in its net assets and its cash flows for the years then ended in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America.
