NATURE'S GAMESCAPE: ALL WALKS OF LIFE ARE INVITED TO A TRUE EXPEDITION ISLAND TO EXPERIENCE AND EXPLORE NATURE IN ITS ENTIRETY. DETACHED FROM THE MAINLAND, THIS ISLAND IS THE ONLY PLACE IN CHICAGO DEVOID FROM THE SOUND AND AIR POLLUTING AUTOMOBILE. THE ISLAND CREATES AN INTIMATE CONNECTION WITH THE NATURAL WORLD WE TEND TO NEGLECT. CHICAGO HAS ALWAYS BEEN AN INTERNATIONAL ICON BECAUSE OF ITS INNOVATIVE THINKING AND FORWARD MOVING ACTIONS. THIS ISLAND IS A WAY TO SHOW TO THE WORLD THAT CHICAGO STILL HAS THE CAPABILITY TO TRANSFORM MASS AND SPACES AS IT SEES FIT. THE ISLAND HAS SET THE BAR IN SUSTAINABILITY BECAUSE OF ITS SELF-SUFFICIENCY.

ENTRY SEQUENCE PARKING IS OFF THE SITE, TO HELP PRESERVE THE SITE AND TO HAVE A LIGHT FOOT PRINT ON THE ISLAND CHILDREN AND ADULTS WILL TAKE THE FERRY TO THE ISLAND AND DOCK AT THE “BLUE STEEL” BUILDING, WHICH CONTAINS THE MAJORITY OF THE PROGRAM. THE GUEST WILL DOCK THERE AND TAKE A LIFT TO THE FIRST LEVEL OF THE “BLUE STEEL”, WHICH CONTAINS THE ENTRY LOBBY AND GALLERY SPACE. FROM THERE, THE GUEST HAVE A CHOICE OF EITHER GOING OUT TO THE SITE THROUGH THE CANAL SYSTEM, WALKING OUT THROUGH THE SITE THROUGH THE PATH SYSTEM, WHICH RUNS PARALLEL WITH THE CANAL SYSTEM, OR EXPLORING THE “BLUE STEEL” AND ALL ITS PROGRAMMING AND FUNTIONALITY. AS THE GUEST EXPLORE THE SITE THROUGH THE CANAL SYSTEM AND PATHS THEY REACH DIFFERENT TYPES AND LEVELS OF CHILDREN EXPLORATORY CAMPS. THESE EXPLORATORY CAMPS ARE DESIGNED SO THAT EACH ONES PROGRAMMING CAN CHANGE ALONG WITH SEASONS AND SPECIAL EVENTS MAY ALSO BE HELD. WHEN THE GUEST REACH THE END OF THE PATHS AND CANALS THEY REACH AN ALL PRESERVED AND NATURAL PART OF THE ISLAND, THIS HALF OF THE ISLAND IS TO BE WILD AND NOT CONTROLLED BY MAN. THIS ZONE WILL PROVIDE A PREVIEW OF WHAT CHICAGO’S ECOSYSTEMS MAY HAVE LOOKED LIKE BEFORE MAN SETTLED THERE. FROM THERE THE GUEST WILL RETURN FROM THERE JOURNEY BY TAKING A SHUTTLE BACK TO THE “BLUE STEEL” WHERE THEY’RE JOURNEY CONTINUES BY TAKING AN “ELASTIC BRIDGE” TO “THE BUBBLE” “ THE BUBBLE” IS AN ARTIFICIAL MAN MADE ISLAND THAT FLOATS ON THE LAKE AND CONTAINS AN ADDITION TO THE WATER SHED AQUARIUM, “THE BUBBLE” IS AN ELASTIC/STEEL STRUCTURE THAT IS COVERED WITH SOLAR PANELS FOR ENERGY SAVING REASONS. CONNECTED TO THE BUBBLE IS THE “ELASTIC ENERGY” STRUCTURE WHICH ISN'T OCCUPIED , COATED WITH SOLAR PANELS AND BUILT WITH IN THIS STRUCTURE ARE WIND TURBINES THAT CAPTURE THE EAST AND WEST WIND. THIS WILL BE A MONOLITHIC/ ICONIC STRUCTURE OR OBJECT FOR THE ISLAND AND ITS PRESERVATION. AFTER THE GUEST VISIT TO THE BUBBLE THEY MAY EITHER RETURN TO THE BLUE STEEL WHERE THEY MAY TAKE THE FERRY BACK TO THEY’RE CAR OR THEY MAY VENTURE FARTHER ON BY TAKING A FERRY FROM THE BUBBLE TO THE WATERSHED AQUARIUM.

SINGLE BEING DWELLING

SOUTH ELEVATION DESIGNED TO SUIT THE LIFE STYLE OF A SINGLE PERSON. URBAN IN FORM, WHILE THE PLAN REMAINS SIMPLE, OPEN SPACES, FLOW OF SPACE CONNECTS THE ROOMS. TRANSPARENT FACADES BRING EXTERIOR TO THE INTERIOR. THICK CONCRETE WALLS WITH CYLINDER COLUMNS PROVIDE THE BUILDING WITH STRUCTURE. 2ND FLOOR TERRACE FACING SOUTH AND WEST HORIZON PROVIDES ESCAPE AND SUNSET VIEWS.

CONSTRUCTED MODEL USING RHINO 3-D, AUTO CAD & A LAZER CUTTER. THE SHELL OF THE LUMINAIRE IS 1/8” CRESCENT BOARD. CONSTRUCTED WITH JEWELRY WIRE AND ELMERS GLUE. ALL NOTCHES AND HOLES WERE PRE-DESIGNED AND CUT DURING LAZER PROCESS. FINAL LARGE PETALS WERE AIRBRUSHED BY LOCAL ARTIST COOL COLORS AND THE SMALLER PETALS WITH WARM COLORS.

INTERACTIVE WALL FOR THE CHILDREN CENTER OF CREATIVE CONNECTIONS AT THE DALLAS MUSEUM OF ART

USING SIMPLE CONSTRUCTION METHODS (CASTING) AND ADVANCED DIGITAL INTERFACES (SCRIPTING).

THE SOFTCAST WALL WAS DESIGNED TO APPEAR AS A BLANKET SURFACE BUT AS YOU TOUCH THE WALL THE HARD CASTED HYDROCAL BLOCKS SHOW THEIR TRUE CHARACTERISTICS.

FRACTAL SCHOOL EACH UNIT IS A COMPOSITE OF THE PRECEDING UNIT, EACH GROUP, WHEN COMPLETE BECOMES THE UNIT FROM WHICH THE NEXT GROUP IS CREATED. THE OUT COME IS A MAPPING BETWEEN THE OBJECTS, WHICH SHOWS A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE PROPERTIES & OPERATIONS.

Dylands Design Competition

Identify: Marfa, Texas Drylands seeks to minimize water consumption and maximize water retention while exploring and developing architectural solutions for the future. Solutions: Agave Lechuguilla & The Blue Bullet.

Master Plan:The site is organized along the natural topography and current rail line. Dry bio-swales are arranged like fingers along the natural slope of the site. Stones and lava rocks are collected locally and displayed in a sacred rock garden, celebrating the Agave Lechguilla. The plan also contains an Agave-yard, where this agave can be harvested and distributed for its attributes. The swales and rock garden mimic the way that agave collect water.

Rail Station Entrance

Blue Bullet: Rain water is collected and filtered through the gardens, swales and rooftops into cisterns along the rail stop. The incoming train will create energy using pressure plates that individually create 120kwh. The train will bring commuters to Marfa and will also be filled with the collected water that will supply other destinations of the dry West.

Agave Lechuguilla: The Chihuahua Desert may appear to be a desolate un-inhabitable place; however agave plants appear to be greener than ever in one of the hottest summers recorded. The natural design of the agave plant promotes sustainable desert design.

Raptor Rehabilitation Visitor Center, Blackland Praire Studying landform trajectories within the existing landscape, brings form to the project. A floating aparatus keeps the natural and built forms separate, mainting harmony and a clear separation of contact.
