DALI: THE ARGILLET COLLECTION is an extraordinary exhibition now touring North America. The upcoming multi-city tour includes five presentations in the Fall of 2013. As both the Curator of this Dali Collection, as well as being the daughter of Pierre Argillet, Salvador Dali's publisher and confidante for over fifty years, it is my honor and pleasure to accompany this Collection and to serve as the last living link to the artistic knowledge and family history with regard to Dali and to Dadaism, as well as to the Surrealists. My ability to retell the stories of my childhood with Dali and his wife Gala, and those of the artists who shaped these most important Art Movements is a wonderful opportunity at this time in my life. This museum-quality collection I have so carefully curated is unequivocally the
most authenticated collection of Dali's work throughout his career. My father, Pierre Argillet (1910-2001) and Dali enjoyed a collaboration and a friendship that spanned five decades; and produced what art historians have termed "the finest bodies of the Master's Art". This collection that I now make available to Collector acquisition and to the viewing public is truly a privilege. As I embarked on my journey both to curate and to present my father's collection, I was asked to remark as to the "overall message I would wish to convey" through my presentation. I interpreted this question as the interviewer seeking a definition.....could I define that moment...that feeling...that responsibility of being truly the only direct archive to the fifty year long collaborative efforts of Salvador Dali and Pierre Argillet?

world as one in which everything was linked. That view of the world is evident in each and every piece of his art, for him it was never a progression of the idea that all things have a shared link...it was the common denominator...Dali's philosophy...if you will.
My answer came to me quite quickly, and without hesitation These series of presentations of Dali: The Argillet Collection is a tribute to the work of my father, Pierre Argillet, a publisher of the Dada and Surrealist group. This collection reflects a constant endeavor, a very personal archive of not only Dali's finest etchings and tapestries, but an intimate glimpse into my familyʼs personal and cherished photos, films, anecdotes and memories of life with Dali and Gala. This exhibition truly is an intimate collaboration of my familyʼs with the most fascinating Artist of the Surrealist Movement. It is with honor and humility that we, the Argillet family, are able to present to you this assemblage of Dali's works. My father began as a journalist with a true passion for Surrealism. His relationship with Dali was as sincere as it was passionate. They had together long discussions on the art in process and on literary topics that Dali would then illustrate. Dali was a man who saw the
I observed and came to recognize this world view of Dali's from childhood. I see this theme in all of my familyʼs Collection, and we speak of it often. This special relationship between me, my family and Dali, and the bond of my father and Dali, created this very unique Collection known as Dali: The Argillet Collection. It has defined my work, my journey from childhood to maturity, and my family history. Friendship and complicity, as life would dictate. The Pierre Argillet Collection demonstrates high standards of quality and the works have appeared in the world's most prestigious museums: Musee Boymans, Rotterdam; Musee Pushkin, Moscow; The Dali Museum, St. Petersburg, Florida; Kunsthaus Zurich and Staatsgalarie, Stuttgart; Isetan Museum of Art, Tokyo; Daimaru Art Museum, Osaka and Hiroshima Prefectural Museum of Art, Japan. and galleries in the world". This collection represents the encounter of an exceptional Artist, Salvador Dali, with an extravagant friend and art publisher, Pierre Argillet. My father had conceived a huge admiration for Dali's talent and he would simply make things happen, at that very moment, because Dali was jumping very fast from an idea to another. There was a sense of immediacy linked to the passion of the discovery, and that my father had very well seized. Pierre Argillet had a passion: beautiful drawings and copper etchings. He was himself
directly on copper plates, like the Ancients, like Albrecht Durer or Rembrandt. He would also do wonderful drawings with an incredible ability. I think that it is this aspect that fascinated my father. Dali, who wanted to be the Leonardo da Vinci of the XXth Century, would find in the copper etching process, a way to draw in reverse, like the Master of the Renaissance. In my opinion, the spontaneity and beauty of the sketches are unrivaled. They sometimes represent studies for major paintings and offer a wide array of variations on a same theme like the illustrations of the Faust by Goethe or the Venus in Furs by Sacher Masoch.
The interest of the etching process is that the Artist cannot change the lines he has etched in the copper. It reveals the movement, the sensitivity and the maturity in Dali's work. Between 1965 and 1973, Dali used to etch with diamond and rubis stylus which turn very easily on the metal, and this allowed him to produce more than 200 different copper plates for my father. This ensemble is perfectly harmonious and coherent because it is the choice of one collector who was able to say to Dali: I don't take this drawing because I don't like it. And Dali wouldn't say anything because he knew that this was not a critic, but the reflection of a temperament and of a passion that had specific requirements. When Dali decided to stop etching in 1973, both friends stopped working together. This is the basis for the integrity of this collection. In 1973, Dali opened his Museum in Spain and Pierre Argillet opened the Museum of Surrealism in a chateau near Paris, France. Both needed large scale works, it is why they decided to have hand woven tapestries done in Aubusson to cover the walls of these historic places. The Aubussonʼs are a magnificent element to the exhibition. In this series of upcoming exhibitions there is a very rare Collection of unique hand-colored etchings entitled "Songs of Maldoror" : 50 etchings by Dali, done between 1934 and 1973. I also have a project drawing for one of the etchings, which is a Museum piece. The Songs of Maldoror have only been exhibited once before, in a four-month exhibit at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), and these upcoming presentations on the multi-city tour will include the opportunity for the public to see this rare collection and to acquire it as well.
This exhibition and collection opportunity offers works from Dali's Suites, including Mythologie, Les Hippies, Goethe's Faust, and the incomparable Poemes Secrets d'Apollinaire. "Why is Salvador Dali as a human being so close to your heart..and how has this collection defined your life..growing up..and now as a grown woman?" Madame Argillet responds; "Well...Salvador Dali was, in private..a very shy man..simple in his daily life..and a true workaholic. He was always experimenting with new techniques, considering things with another angle of perception. He would listen as well to peasant people as to scientists and persons of fame and fortune. His openness has always struck me!"

As Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso were great friends often working together, Dali was very much inspired by Picassoʼs “Tourmachie” these etchings epitomize Daliʼs style with their burlesque touches. Bishops are seen blessing macabre parades, where the bull ends up in a grand piano, while a hallucinogenic matador, like a sad clown, gazes at the audience. As Daliʼ work in The Surrealist Bullfight etchings will show, the hero is always the bull!

In early 1969 Pierre Argillet brings the book “Venus in Furs “by, Sacher Masoch to Dali with the suggestion that Dali illustrate the sadomasochistic games suggested by the text. Salvador Dali often portrayed himself as a man, a woman or a hermaphrodite, usually with long eyelashes, either in pain or inflicting pain, where Eros and Thanatos are laughing at each other. This is a major, powerful work, where Daliʼs freedom of line and imagination are best expressed.

In 1969 Pierre Argillet takes his young daughter to visit India, there they experience the freedom and easy living of the “Love and Peace� years. Pierre Argillet takes many photographs of the new world surrounding them , excitedly he shares these strange and beautiful photographs with Dali, suggesting he capture this moment in time. These etchings reveal the superb, spontaneous and consummate technique of the artist at the peak of his maturity. Outlandish free flowing surrealist characters or situations appear through intricate whirls or golden halos. The colors and freedom of motion represent continuous season of spring.

PIETA 1960 15X20 Salvador Dali was an outstanding figure in the Dada and Surrealism movements, he was one of the most brilliantly provocative artists of the twentieth century, not only in his public life but also in his paintings and in the field of printmaking ,as seen here in Pieta, a true tribute to Leonardo DiVinci.
APOLLINAIRE 1967 THE BEACH AT SETE 15X11 Pierre Argillet suggested that Dali illustrate the “Poems Secret” by Apollinaire. Dali’s initial plan was to illustrate a number of songs by Georges Brassens, However , the singer’s agent recommended so many changes, that Dali shifted themes, and turned “ Les Tranche’es into a military ground, where time seems at a standstill. Seeing in the plates a correlation with the 1914-1918 war, Pierre Argillet suggested that Dali illustrate instead the” Poemes Secrets” by Apollinaire. From then on, the series took on a more unconventional, more Surrealist turn. The green tree in the center is created from ashes of the dead soldiers and is representation of the rebirth.
POEMS BY MAO ZEDONG 1967 THE DRAGON 15X11 In the midst of the Cultural Revolution in China, soon followed by the May 1968 riots in France, Pierre Argillet brought the book of “Poems” by Mao Zedong to Dali. Tickled, the artist decided to create eight illustrations, some of which were political satires. With this Dali created “The Dragon” in the image of a female monster. The image, standing before the dragon represents the strength of humanity versus the overpowering Dragon.
MYTHOLOGIE 1963-1965 PEGASUS 22X30 Pierre Argillet suggested that Dali illustrate Mythologie. Dali immursed himself in this undertaking , by drawing very closely upon the symbolism of the ancient Greek legends. Dali being a very passionate artist worked very rapidly and immursed himself in the text of the poems. Dali would often start with an abstract smudge, created in a single motion, and he developed his theme from this sign of fate.
