E DITO RS N OTE This magazine has been a labour of love to produce. Unseen magazine started out as a way to get people to see charity shops in a new light. After living and breathing charity shops for the past month, it’s become clear that charity shops are the hidden gems of our community. With this magazine we aim to start a charity shop revolution, with reference to the current trends we’ll highlight key items that have been overlooked. One of the most enjoyable aspects of putting together this
magazine was listening to the volunteers’ stories and experiences. Talking to the store workers, managers and all the people that donate their time to help in the charity stores put into perspective the actual reality of volunteering. We’ve realized it’s more than just helping charities, it’s an experience! And of course, we’d like to take this opportunity to thank all the charity shops that took the time to talk to us, giving us their knowledge and experiences, we are eternally grateful.

INTERVI EW WI TH STEVI E
“The London marathon was a challenge and the biggest, best marathon I could take part in.” Stevie, 21, is a fellow charity shop thrifter and student from the Arts University Bournemouth. She recently embarked on a fundraising campaign for ‘The Children’s Adventure Farm Trust’, which culminated in her running the recent London Marathon. We talked to her to find out more about her amazing efforts! Why did you decide to fundraise? I wanted to do a good thing for charity. I ideally wanted to do volunteer work but I couldn’t fit that into my schedule, so this was an alternative. The London marathon was a challenge and the biggest, best marathon I could take part in. How much did you raise? I raised £700. I used the Virginmoneygiving website and advertised through social networking. Another good way would have been to sell clothes on ebay.
How would I encourage others? By advertising more ‘fun’ events like the‘colour run’, but you’d have to raise a minimum/ target. Broadcast it in the local environments. Also I found it easier to take part because I ran with my brother, so I think running with family or friends helps. What part was the hardest? In the marathon mile 15- 20 was the hardest. The finish line was the best part, great atmosphere, mainly because of the support of the crowd. Otherwise training was definitely the hardest part. Why do you shop at charity shops? Because its great for you and the charity. You don’t have to feel bad about spending money , I feel less guilty buying clothes. Also you get really unique clothes (other people won’t have them) Vintage. And it’s ideal for students as it is really cheap.
