EDITOR'S LETTER W hew! What an eventful year it has been. I can hardly believe I am sitting to write the last one of these for 2015. As always, Vital has had a busy year and there is a lot we can look back on and be proud of. I thought I would run through the highlights reel in case any of you missed it. LOOKING BACK ON 2015

THE VITAL FOUNDATION The Vital Foundation raised R8.1 million in total for the fight against woman and child abuse. The Vital Foundation team worked tirelessly this year, to make sure the message behind the Vital Foundation was communicated as much as possible. I think we can be especially proud of our Mandela Day campaign. We saw volunteers across the country come together to contribute in some way to the plight of woman and child abuse.

VITAL DEBUTS AT SANLAM CAPE TOWN MARATHON For the very first time Vital was one of the developmental sponsors of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon. The association was one that we are very proud of, as the people behind the event are as passionate about leading an active and healthy life as everyone at Vital. I can’t wait to see what next year’s event will bring.

#3 YUMMY SNACKS FROM VITAL I have to admit, I have never been a fan of the rice cake. However, I can now say that I am a convert – but only when it comes to all things mini, puffed and Vital! This year we launched a wide variety of new flavours to the Vital Mini Rice Cakes range, as well as introducing Vital Mini Corn Cakes, which was my absolute favourite (especially Light Butter).

#4 VITAL CLUB GROWS! My fellow colleagues often describe the Vital Club as my baby, and it is very true. I sincerely hope all you Vital Club members have enjoyed all we have had to offer this year. We are most definitely going to up the ante next year. Watch this space. We hope you enjoy the festive season, may it be filled with lots of merriment! Yours in good health,

THE VITAL FOUNDATION

PEACE IN THE HOME PEACE IN THE WORLD From 25 November, South Africa will be taking part in the global 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) campaign, ending on International Human Rights Day, 10 December. The theme for this year is ‘From peace in the home to peace in the world: making education safe for all’.

THE VITAL FOUNDATION

“South Africa still has high levels of violence committed against women and children.”

T

he Centre for Women’s Global Leadership first launched 16 Days of Activism against GBV in 1991 – it is now celebrating its 24th anniversary. There will be 180 countries actively involved and contributing to making a difference each year. Over 5 478 organisations, policymakers, governments, UN agencies and numerous individuals will focus predominantly on the following issues: ●● ●● ●● ●● ●●

Racism Sexism Cultures of violence Homophobia Implementation of human rights obligations (right to health, reproductive rights, end to militarism and gender-based violence, among others).

Article 26 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights recognises that education is a public benefit and fundamental human right. It is defended in various international and regional human rights conventions and treaties. Irrespective of this, the right to education is still subject to political, economic and social dynamics – influencing certain groups (women, girls, those with disabilities, LGBTQI individuals, migrants and native people) in a vulnerable and predisposed position to being denied this crucial right.

RECENT DATA INDICATES:

38 million people are internally displaced worldwide 16.7 million are refugees Girls and young women specifically are most adversely impacted 31 million girls at primary level and 34 million at lower secondary level are not enrolled in school 15 million girls and 10 million boys will not have the privilege to go to school 58 million children of primary school age do not have access to education Approximately half of the above (28.5 million) live in conflict-affected areas.

South Africa still has high levels of violence committed against women and children, despite a world-renowned Constitution and a legislative positioning that focuses on women and children’s rights to safety. All sectors, including government, business, civil society organisations, faith-based organisations and the media, will be focusing on an active awareness drive of the negative impact of violence and abuse on women and children. All South Africans can show their support by wearing a white ribbon – a symbol of peace – during this time. The Vital Foundation actively supports the fight against woman and child abuse; every time you buy a pack of Vital supplements, R1 is donated to organisations that are committed to the same cause.

WHAT ’S UP @ VITAL

VÖOST CREW ADVENTURES Two bloggers from Johannesburg were treated to a VÖOST experience in June this year.

JUNE 2015

THE ADVENTURE WAS JAM-PACKED WITH THE FOLLOWING ACTIVITIES: • A visit to The Elephant Sanctuary • A visit to Bush Babies Monkey Sanctuary • A cable car trip and view of Magaliesberg and Hartbeespoort Dam

“I’m always keen for a little breakaway out of the city and VÖOST was kind enough to indulge my yearning for the outdoors, by sending me on a nice trip to Hartbeespoort Dam in the North West Province. These guys went all out – I was picked up by a shuttle and given a goodie bag filled with vitamins and all things good for my health. Our first stop was at the Elephant Sanctuary, which was a truly awesome experience to get up close and personal with these beautiful creatures. I have to admit that I was sceptical at first. I always raise an eyebrow when I visit animals in an enclosed environment, but I am happy to report that there is no foul play here. The elephants are treated with respect and have been removed from unfortunate surroundings and are being rehabilitated to go back into the wild – where they belong. And for this transition period we get to meet these majestic animals, like Amarula.

06 · NOVEMBER 2015

WHAT ’S UP @ VITAL

The next stop was at the Bush Babies Monkey Sanctuary – same story, different animal. These critters are domesticated monkeys that have been moved to the sanctuary to be rehabilitated back into the wild. They roam free, live in an exquisite natural habitat and you get to walk freely among them. Since they have been previously domesticated, it means that they are not scared of humans and take a big interest in you and in your belongings. They are naughty little pickpockets and we were warned many a time to take care of our stuff. I was wary of taking pics, but highly recommend you go and

check out this place and experience it for yourself. It’s a good idea to leave your phone for a bit and experience it fully. After walking with elephants, playing with monkeys and going up a mountain, FOOD was in order and we were treated to a full three-course meal. The VÖOST Experience was a treat, and without sounding too forward about it – their vitamins are pretty rad, too. It was a cold day – no, freezing – and the best way to beat the cold and to prevent flu is with a vitamin. That’s what my mom always says!”

OMEGA-3 – THE NEW PROZAC Recent studies show that omega-3 is just as effective as Prozac. Depression affects everyone and it is a growing problem. We also know that our diets consist of a lot less omega-3 fatty acids than ever before. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), one of the omega-3 fatty acids, was tested and found to have the same therapeutic effects as Prozac. This was tested in patients with clinically diagnosed depression. Combining EPA and Prozac increases the efficacy even more.

RUNNING FOR PEACE Tammy B is an ex-SA long and stand up paddle boarder. She is currently a sports presenter on Good Hope FM, while also staying active with her running, surf reports and snowboarding. In addition, she has been a vocal advocate against woman and child abuse in South Africa. She shares her story of surviving abuse, while conquering her first marathon.

I

am an ambassador against woman and child violence, not just because I want to be the change I see in the world, but because I am the change; I have been through and fought it. I ran the Sanlam Cape Town marathon as a dedication to my mom, whom I lost through abuse. I lost both my parents because of it and my siblings and I were orphaned at a very young age. Yet, it was my mother’s sacrifice that gave my siblings and I a second chance at life. So I can see it from both perspectives. I was there as a witness and I was the victim, but I was also there to fight to carry on surviving in my own life. Tammy B’s father shot her mother when she was just a teenager, and her life

is a testimony of strength, endurance and hope. She is an example of how to overcome, how not to be a victim and how to live an active and healthy life. “My exercise routine is a vitally important aspect of my life as it is my way of maintaining balance. It not only makes me physically stronger, it leaves me feeling hopeful and gives me the courage to work harder.” Tammy B recently achieved her goal of completing her first marathon, and finished the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon in just under five hours. Findings from the 2015 Peace Conference support Tammy B’s approach to living healthy, as well as contributing to the healing process:

“Sport has and is playing a critical role in conflict resolution, nation-building and civilian peacekeeping.” Recreation and sport have made a significant contribution to social development. It also impacts positively on health, education and social capital, particularly among the youth. “Research has shown that sport and recreation act as a significant vehicle for youth skills training and education. Various NGOs and sport centres are making a difference in this respect.” Sport has the ability to bring together people from all walks of life and cultures in the spirit of fun, togetherness and ultimately peace. In addition, a recent study from the University of Colorado revealed that

“REGULAR AEROBIC EXERCISE DEVELOPS LEARNING, MEMORY AND SELF-CONTROL, SPECIFICALLY IN ADULTS.”

regular aerobic exercise develops “learning, memory and self-control – specifically in adults”. Researchers found that exercise assisted with the protection of white brain matter and prevented a natural loss in cognitive function during the ageing process. According to Susan F Tapert, professor of psychiatry at the University of California, the effects of heavy drinking are more prominent in some people than in others. Her research has found that, in people who do not exercise regularly, heavy drinking is linked to poorer white matter health;

in people who exercised more, there is a weaker link between brain health and alcohol. Exercise releases chemicals called endorphins in the body. Receptors in the brain interact with endorphins and reduce awareness of pain. It also controls positive feelings in the body, similar to the feelings morphine create. This is known as the ‘runner’s high’ – experienced especially after aerobic exercise. The result: feeling energised and positive, contributing to

general well-being and improving overall self-esteem. Family units can play an important role in promoting exercise as part of their community’s lifestyle, involving neighbours and friends to become active and live a more positive lifestyle. In turn, this will encourage children to become active at a young age – not only creating sporting opportunities, but encouraging self-love, a positive outlook on life and hope for their future.

L VE

YOUR LIVER The liver is the body’s most important detoxifying organ, taking charge of the continuous cleansing process of the body. Andrea du Plessis provides some valuable tips on looking after your liver during the festive season.

ANDREA DU PLESSIS - Vital Health Foods Nutritional Expert -

012 · NOVEMBER 2015

FEATURE

YOUR DETOX QUESTIONS ANSWERED WHAT IS DETOXIFICATION? Detoxification does not refer to when you eliminate all unhealthy foods from your diet and start drinking litres of water. It is an ongoing process of cleansing in your body. Toxins and unwanted waste products are eliminated through sweat, urine and digestive waste.

WHAT DOES YOUR BODY NEED TO BE CLEANSED FROM? The main excretory systems in your body, the digestive tract and the urinary system, eliminate a variety of compounds from your body on a daily basis. Your blood is filtered by your liver and kidneys, which assist in eliminating natural waste products and toxins from the body. Natural waste products include the metabolites or breakdown products from the foods we eat, as well as waste products from the body’s normal metabolic functions. They include electrolytes, mineral salts, uric acid and urea from the proteins we eat, and even the breakdown products of vitamins

found in the foods and nutritional supplements we ingest. Environmental waste products include pollutants that enter the body through the water we drink, air we breathe and foods we eat. Well-known dietary toxins include alcohol and caffeine.

WHAT CAUSES SYMPTOMS OF DETOXIFICATION SUCH AS HEADACHES AND JOINT PAINS? Headaches are predominantly caused by caffeine withdrawal. Dehydration may also contribute to headaches if diuretics are used, or if fluid intake is insufficient. Joint pains and body aches are caused by disturbances of the electrolyte balance, as well as the mobilisation of unwanted substances or toxins previously trapped in your body tissues, resulting in higher levels of these harmful substances in your bloodstream.

WHEN DO YOU NEED TO FOLLOW A DETOX PLAN? Ideally, never. Detoxification should not provide an excuse to smoke, drink alcohol, eat processed foods and follow an unhealthy lifestyle of stress, insufficient sleep, lack of exercise and an unhealthy diet. People who drink six to eight glasses of water per day, eat a diet filled with fresh organic produce, exercise regularly, sleep enough and manage stress do not need to follow any detox plans. In fact, people who follow this type of lifestyle usually do not experience any symptoms or sideeffects when following a detox diet, as their bodies are not overloaded with natural and environmental toxins.

DOES DETOXIFICATION HAVE ANY POTENTIALLY HARMFUL EFFECTS? Detoxification should be exercised under practitioner supervision. Even though it is intended to benefit health, beware of the unintended consequences (see below).

Bad habits

Weight loss followed by weight gain

Nutrient deficiencies

Reduced energy and concentration

In anticipation of a detoxification plan, many people feel entitled to overindulge in smoking, drinking, drug abuse and unbalanced meals high in additives, fat, refined sugars and starches, and salt. The problem is that the harmful effects of an unbalanced lifestyle and unhealthy diet cannot be corrected or eliminated by a 10day detox plan.

Those wanting to shed a few kilograms by following a detox diet, beware. The body’s metabolic rate slows down by up to 25% during a fast or energy-restricted detox diet. Even though short-term energy deprivation may help reduce body weight over the short term, this is almost guaranteed to be followed by rapid weight gain after you return to your normal diet. Future attempts may be less successful, because of our highly sophisticated metabolic responses to starvation.

Any detoxification diet is likely to be nutrient deficient. Even a healthy balanced diet including five portions of fresh fruit and vegetables is not likely to provide optimum nutrition. This may be very relevant for a person with already low levels of essential nutrients, such as iron.

Many people feel exhausted and light-headed during detoxification. This may be the result of a drop in blood pressure and/or blood glucose levels. Ask any person who suffers with hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) or low blood pressure what these physiological states can do to your concentration and energy levels.

Artichokes and artichoke extract are well known for their role in stimulating the flow of bile from the liver to the digestive tract to aid in digestion.

Bitter-tasting vegetables such as endive and rocket are known to stimulate the liver to produce bile, which helps with the digestion of fatty foods.

ANGER MANAGEMENT Do you find yourself getting into frequent fights and arguments? Anger is a normal human emotion, but it is also one of the most powerful emotions that could stem from a range of suppressed feelings. It can appear as slight irritation or a sudden strong rage. Anger is not the problem; it is how we decide to act on it.

VITAL MAXI B B vitamins, as found in Vital Maxi B, are crucial for dealing with daily stress and combating mental and physical fatigue. Added vitamin C aids absorption of B vitamins, functions as an antioxidant, and assists in maintaining healthy gums, skin and connective tissue.

THE PROBLEM

THE SOLUTION

Anger could lead to the destruction of your personal life and affect the people around you. This will depend on how you deal with your feelings and choose to express them. The key is to recognise these feelings and to know how to deal with them in appropriate ways that can help you stay focused and think clearly. Problems arise when people fail to identify and understand their waves of fury. Therefore, it is important to know the potential threats of suppressed anger and how to manage these emotions.

To get to the root of your anger, it is important to explore your feelings. Anger could be the result of what you have learnt or seen in your family life, a traumatic event or even masking feelings of insecurity or embarrassment. Anger could also be your way of covering up your true feelings instead of acknowledging them.

IODINE SUPPLEMENTATION

HELPS PREVENT DEFICIENCIES According to recommendations by the British Dietetic Association, iodine supplementation should be highlighted to correct iodine deficiencies and support iodine intake. Iodine intake was thought to be more than adequate but recent research has shown iodine deficiencies, notably in schoolgirls and pregnant women. There is now concern that many adult women may not be getting enough iodine, particularly in pregnancy. WHAT IS IODINE? Iodine is a mineral element that needs to be ingested through the diet as the body cannot manufacture it. It plays a vital role in brain development and is essential for the functioning of the thyroid gland, which controls the body’s metabolism.

WHERE IS IODINE FOUND IN THE DIET? Iodine is scarcely represented in food, in general, which explains why there is such a large risk of iodine deficiency. Seaweed is one of nature’s richest sources of iodine, followed by fish, other seafood and dairy products. Kelp tablets are often used as an iodine supplement as it is a concentrated source of this mineral.

ON EXPRESSO HEALTH BENEFITS OF EATING SEAWEED

IODINE AND BRAIN DEVELOPMENT Iodine deficiency due to low dietary intake has been identified to be the cause of learning difficulties in children, as it is a vital element in brain development. Recent studies showing reduced iodine intake raised concern, resulting in the recommendations to include iodine in multivitamin supplements, notably in supplements for pregnant women, as iodine plays a critical role in foetal brain development.

WHY IS SALT IODISED? It is difficult to obtain sufficient levels of iodine through the diet; therefore iodine is added to salt as a strategy to increase the general population’s dietary intake. However, due to the dietary guidelines urging people to consume less salt due to the dangers of high blood pressure, dietary intake of iodine is reduced unintentionally.

WHAT ABOUT IODINE ALLERGIES? Contrary to popular belief, iodine is not an allergen. Iodine is a mineral element that belongs to the group of nutritional elements that includes magnesium, zinc, iron and selenium. Allergies relating to fish and shellfish have mistakenly been linked to iodine, simply due to a lack of scientific and clinical information. Many people still perceive iodine to be an allergen, which is not true. Regrettably this results in dietary restrictions with regard to the consumption of iodine-rich foods and supplements that contain iodine.

IODINE SUPPLEMENTATION MAKING A COMEBACK Iodine supplementation is promoted as an important strategy to combat the surprising rise in iodine deficiencies. Dietary intake of iodine can be increased by including seaweed, which is found in sushi dishes in the form of nori.
