With so many special #OnlyinYork experiences awaiting, no one visit is the same

visityork.org

Welcome to York in summer, where modern day meets old and there are hidden gems around every corner. On a clear day climb the 275 steps to the highest point in the city, you won’t be disappointed by the panoramic views from York Minster’s Central Tower. If you look carefully you may even see as far as the North York Moors. With your feet back firmly on the ground, experience steam rides and the miniature railway in the shadows of the iconic locomotive giants at the National Railway Museum. Don’t miss the viewing platform where you’ll see the hive of activity at York Railway Station – keep your eyes peeled for the brand new Azuma LNER trains taking people on their travels. Have a leisurely stroll along the River Ouse, taking in the

07

riverside sights, then jump aboard a self-driven or guided tour boat on a City Cruise. If you feel like cooling down and escaping the summer sun don’t miss the JORVIK Viking Centre, where the vikingage is brought back to life in an immersive experience. Sit back, relax and watch the world go by in one of the city’s picture perfect parks amongst the beautiful flowers and landscaped gardens. Nothing beats some downtime in the historic Museum Gardens nestled amongst the medieval ruins of St. Mary’s Abbey or in the tranquil grounds of York Minster at Dean’s Park. A short stroll away are the iconic city walls, a must see as you walk the length of the longest medieval town walls in England. For the ultimate outdoor experience don’t miss the thrill of race day at the York

Races, where you can place your bets and dine away in first class hospitality. A city packed full of festivals and events, you’ll hear roars of laughter at the Great Yorkshire Fringe, cheers at the Micklegate Soapbox Challenge and sample tasty treats at the York Food and Drink Festival. With quirky independent stores, high street shops and over 30 attractions in less than one square mile, you’ll never venture too far from the action. Allowing you plenty of time to relax at one of the many cafés, bars and restaurants across the city. Continue your adventure beyond the city walls and take a short trip to Castle Howard, arguably one of the most grandest historic homes in the UK. To enjoy all of these unique experiences make sure you’ve purchased your money saving York Pass.

York is a compact city allowing you to dip between designer stores, unique boutiques and big high street names. There’s not many places in the world where you can say that you’ve shopped along historic cobbled streets, in beautiful medieval and Georgian buildings. The city is home to a strong independent scene where you can get to the heart of the city, with over 200 shops dotted along York’s narrow snickleways and ginnels. Explore the city’s independent strongholds including Fossgate and Bishopthorpe Road, to name a few. If you’re

11

looking for a special gift visit Bradley’s Jewellers, where you can pick up a glitzy present for that special someone. For fans of wizards and magic, walk down Shambles, the oldest shopping street in Europe, inspiration for Diagon Alley in the films and home to three shops for brooms and potions! A stone’s throw away is the historic Shambles Market selling local crafts and produce, do stop by and chat with the friendly local traders. Follow your nose and you’ll be faced with tasty treats at the Shambles Food Court, the ideal place to rest and enjoy street food.

For your high street favourites head along to the Coppergate Centre. Look out for their eye catching summer installations throughout the summer. A short drive or bus ride away is the York Designer Outlet, the perfect shopping experience for the fashionista. Where you can buy top designer labels for up to 60% less, including Paul Smith, Ted Baker and much more. Images: Top – Fossgate Festival Bottom – Shambles Market

The mystery of

pearls

Insider’s guide by Kay Bradley Pearls are the only jewels created by a living animal Pearls are mystical and possess a serene elegance that can shine alone Pearls symbolise purity and are traditionally worn at weddings: much like the present-day tradition of ‘the white dress’ They are super chic & elegant Freshwater pearls are cultured in freshwater in lakes and rivers and are cultured in mussels

67 Low Petergate, York, YO1 7HY T: 01904 655235 www.bradleysjewellersyork.com bradleysjewellersyork

There are 3 major types of saltwater cultured pearls: Akoya (found in China, Japan & Vietnam), Tahitian (found in French Polynesia & The Cook Islands), & South Sea (found in Australia, Indonesia & Philippines. South Sea pearls are incredibly rare and are cultured in oysters only producing one pearl at a time When choosing a pearl, lustre is the most important value factor when judging a pearl’s quality Perfectly round pearls are rare. Pearls come in a variety of sizes such as semi-round, oval, button & Baroque (irregular) Pearls come in array of stunning colours from white, cream, apricot, pink, golden yellow, pistachio green, peacock purple, blue to black
