We celebrate

The artists at the “Rothenburg Christmas Workshop” have created a variety of enchanting items to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Christmas carol „Silent night, holy night“. It was December 24th in the year 1818 when the carol, with its message of peace and hope, was first sung to the now world-famous melody. These special themed items and many other Christmas decorations with an exceptional variety of designs in wood and glass are wonderful gift ideas for Christmas.

DIAMONDS ARE A GIRL’S BEST FRIEND! The wonder of nature: an insider’s guide to choosing that perfect diamond with Kay Bradley of Bradley’s Jewellers, York • Research and buy from an ethical company like Bradley’s who have over 50 years of experience and are a longstanding member of the National Association of Jewellers.

• Be conscious of synthetically-grown diamonds which are not natural and decrease in value.

• Buy British-made products as Kay believes these are world-leading in jewellery design. • Look for the 4 C’s: Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat Weight.

• Truly colourless diamonds are very rare, but Bradley’s carry a fine selection of certified ‘D Colour Diamonds.’

• Ensure the stone is radiant and sparkles when tilted.

• Quality comes before quantity. Invest in the best stone you can afford! • Always get your diamond insured and ask for a complimentary valuation document.

• All these factors affect the price, so think about your budget and expect to exceed it!

Christmas Beyond York

44

Festive cheer spreads beyond York, witness Christmas grandeur and fun at one of the many attractions outside of the city. Stately home Castle Howard celebrates Christmas on a truly grand scale, this year’s house theme is inspired by the ’12 Days of Christmas’. Prepare for Leaping Lords, Laying Geese and Partridges adorning the rooms and spaces. A visit to the picturesque market town of Helmsley will offer you the chance to soak up the Christmas spirit over some fine food at The Black Swan Hotel or the Feversham Arms Hotel, all in the stunning surroundings of the North York Moors. The Stockeld Park Christmas Adventure is perfect for all the family, festive fun by day and illuminated spectacle by night. In the day you can skate on the ice rink and take part in the Nordic ski woodland trail. At night bright twinkly lights and colour bring the park to life, explore the illuminated maze or the Enchanted Forest with its light show full of lit sculptures and lake. Dig out your best Christmas jumper, get in the festive spirit and embark on a Christmas trail around RHS Garden Harlow Carr, just don’t forget to enter the best jumper competition. After the outdoor trail warm up inside, have a singalong and listen to stories from Santa.

All aboard the Santa Express… Join Santa and his special helpers on a magical adventure aboard the Santa Express, which will take you on a festive journey you won’t forget! Santa will decide if you’ve been naughty or nice in this unique, fun festive experience that sets off on a magical journey along the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, with sweet treats for the kids and an alcoholic tipple for the grown ups.

Park & Ride in the City If you are travelling by car, York’s Park & Ride service offers the simplest solution to getting into the city. Six sites are located around the ring road, offering hundreds of free and secure parking spaces at each site. Once you’re parked up, just hop on one of our modern buses, which are all equipped with free wi-fi and are adapted for pushchairs and wheelchair users. For the perfect family day out, up to three children can travel absolutely free when accompanied by a fare paying adult! This includes bus pass holders paying the £1.10 concessionary fare, who can also take three children aboard free of charge. Buses run every 10-15 minutes from early morning and throughout the day, running later on Thursdays (every 15 mins until 9.30pm) and Fridays (every 30-40 mins until 11pm) throughout the Christmas period. Concessionary Travel Pass holders pay a reduced fare of £1.10 when boarding at 52

a Park & Ride site after 9am on Mondays to Fridays and at any time on Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays. There is no charge when boarding at any other bus stops, including the city centre, at these times. Late Night Shopping There will be late night shopping in York on Thursday and Friday evenings from 15 November right up to 21 December. The last bus from the city centre will depart at 9.30pm on Thursdays and even later on Fridays (11pm). York Designer Outlet/The Ice Factor The Designer Outlet Park and Ride will run until 9.30pm Monday to Saturday between 15 November and 22 December (and until 11pm on Fridays). Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve The last buses leave the city centre at 6pm and car parks are locked after the last bus has departed. There is no overnight parking available. There will be no services on Christmas Day or New Year’s Day.
