The best way to discover York is from the medieval City Walls. The longest city walls in England offer two miles of stunning views and a great introduction to York. It takes around two hours to complete the circuit so pack a picnic and get your trainers on.
The iconic Shambles is the perfect example of the historic, twisting lanes which make up York. Weave your way through the range of quirky shops, delis and bakeries lining the cobbles. You’ll be surprised by how many can fit into such a tiny street!
Top Tip: The most Instagram-worthy photo spot is opposite the Grand Hotel looking out towards the Minster. Look out for Grays Court and its beautiful courtyard where you can enjoy afternoon tea.
Top Tip: Stop by the vibrant Shambles Market and pick up some fresh food for the evening – your housemates will love you for it.

Take a selfie on the shortest street in Britain, with the strangest name: Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate. The city’s whipping post and stocks were here in the middle ages. Afterwards, explore the rest of the ginnels and snickelways which make York so charming.
Sit back and relax while exploring York from the River Ouse. You can rent out a private motor boat to see the city from the water. Take a break from studying on a sunny day and cruise along the river with up to eight friends. Watch out for the geese though!
Top Tip: If your selfie-game is strong, lie down on the stone wall above the sign to get a better angle.

Instead of heading to a drinks bar, pass under one of the four main gateways into York: Bootham Bar, Monk Bar, Walmgate Bar or Micklegate Bar. Make your grand entrance and step into the city as people have since Roman times.
Soak up some history with a guided tour or go down into the Undercroft to journey back 2000 years in York’s most iconic building with interactive chambers. Discover freaky faces and gruesome gargoyles as you wander through York’s past.

Uncover history and unleash your inner highwayman by visiting the grave of York’s most notorious prisoner. Dick Turpin was held in York Castle Prison, now York Castle Museum, after a career of highway robbery and horse stealing. Discover the small forgotten graveyard where he was buried.
Visit the ghost sign of Bile Beans, a miracle laxative marketed in the 1890s that claimed to “disperse unwanted fat” with its ‘secret ingredient’ – a vegetable source from Australia. The product was deemed a fraud when it was found out there was no secret ingredient and no connection with any plant in Australia!
Top Tip: There’s no signposts to lead you to Turpin, so get your phone sat-nav at the ready.

Dean’s Park is the perfect place to relax after a busy day of getting to know your new home city. It’s also home to two of York Minster’s more unusual residents, a pair of Peregrine Falcons! Sit in the park and try to spot the birds of prey. They often sit on the North West Tower to soak up the sun.
Top Tip: Stop by Yorkie’s favourite – the Yorkshire Terrier pub. This York Brewery pub is a hidden gem situated on historic Stonegate.

Sacrifice the Saturday lie-in and join the locals at York racecourse for one and a half laps of gorgeous green scenery. It’s not that far away. If you’re up for a bigger challenge, take part in the York 10K. Entry money goes to charity, plus you’ll get a finisher t-shirt and medal to show off.
Rowntree Park is York’s answer to Kensington Gardens. It’s one of York’s best kept secrets, favoured by locals, with flower gardens, open green spaces and a pond as your backdrop. Bring a bat and ball and get competitive with a rounders match, or feed the feathered friends who reside in the park.

Climb the 275 steps to the very top of York’s most iconic landmark. There’s no better place for sightseeing than from the top of the medieval central tower, which is the highest point in the whole of York. Take your date’s breath away with stunning panoramic views of York.

Be a big kid and chime the pitched posts on Lord Mayor’s Walk on the way to uni. If you hit them in the correct order they’ll sound just like the nursery rhyme! Or maybe you can be more creative and think up your own tune.
Top Tip: Follow the walk all the way up to Millennium Bridge and you’ll find one of York’s solar-powered Ice Cream boats. Now there’s a reason to walk faster...

Find the cat statues located on York’s historic buildings. Legend has it that the cats were put there to scare away rodents which spread diseases and also to ward off evil spirits! Some of the cats have been around for 200 years. See if you can spot them all.
Each year in April, some of the best artists and makers in the city open their studios and exhibitions to the public free of charge. A wide variety of artists take part, from painters and sculptors to photographers and multimedia artists.
