No big surprise, really. After all, we’re Wales’ Waterfront City. The waves are within skimming distance of the shops, there’s a big beach – and an even bigger bay – just across the road from the park, and a snazzy marina filled with boats. That’s just the start of it. At one side of the Bay you’ll find more bucketfuls of sand at Aberavon beach. At the other there’s Mumbles, our swanky, stylish little sailing resort that everyone – locals and visitors – just love. And, keeping the best until last, waiting around the headland is the beautiful Gower Peninsula, where beachy things are a way of life.
All beaches great and small If you don’t believe us, take a walk along Rhossili beach in the far west where Gower runs out of land, but not sand. You’ll be walking for some time – all the way to Whitford Burrows and more miles of beach before you’re finished. Now take yourself to Pwll Du Bay or neighbouring Brandy Cove, tiny places hidden away amongst cliffs on the south coast. You won’t believe they share the same peninsula as boundless, endless Rhossili.
Some people like the cosy, comfy feel of intimate, rocky coves. Others go for the big time and head for open, sandy spaces bordering on the infinite. We’re good at both (and the beaches in between little and large).

The surf’s been up for some time. Surfing and Swansea Bay go back a long way. Way back to the 1960s when the locals began riding the Atlantic breakers at west facing Llangennith, the scattered coastal village on Gower. This is Wales’ spiritual West Coast, where California meets Cambria. You can’t move here in summer for split-screen VWs and beach-blonde surfers. Though, in the words of the legendary Pete Jones from PJ’s Surfshop, the beach is ‘so big there’s room for everyone’.

Surfing plus... Nowadays, it’s not just the waves at Llangennith, Caswell Bay, Langland Bay and Aberavon that attract the surfing crowd. Kitesurfing is also big news, especially along Rhossili and Swansea Bay and at Port Eynon, Oxwich and Aberavon. You can also go windsurfing, kayaking, canoeing, waterskiing or wakeboarding… or galloping across the beach on horseback. There’s even an alternative to surfing in the sea. Swansea’s LC leisure complex is awash with all kinds of aqua activities, including Europe’s first ‘Boardrider’ indoor surf experience.
Being beside the Seaside Holidays at home are back in fashion – and about time too, we say. Swansea Bay has 50-odd beaches, bays and coves. Sandcastles and beach games, rockpools and dunes, paddling and swimming, proms and piers, beach cafés and beach huts… we’ve got them all, in (buckets and) spades.
Go Gower A few words about the Gower Peninsula. It’s gorgeous. It’s Britain’s first ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’. It’s 19 miles long with a coastline of around 35 miles, around three-quarters of which is in the care of the National Trust. So it’s a safe bet to say that its natural beauty is pretty constant. But in other ways it keeps on changing. The moody, low-lying saltmarshes and cockle beds along the north coast are a world away from the south’s sunny cliffs and beaches. Swansea Bay is framed by two very different harbours. Mumbles is Victorian-cosmopolitan, a confection of high end boutiques and ice cream parlours, seaside chic and retro fun. The Maritime Quarter and SA1 Waterfront in the historic docklands across the Bay are the opposite – quite literally. Here you’ll find a city that’s reacquainting itself with its maritime roots in a modern way – and feeling glad to be back.
Two miles of promenade, a wide, sandy beach and spectacular views across Swansea Bay to the Gower Peninsula. No wonder that local hero Michael Sheen loves walking here when he returns home from Hollywood.

The mantelpiece is groaning. No, honestly. We’re almost embarrassed to mention that Rhossili and Port Eynon have yet again won top beach awards (the latter ‘Britain’s Best Beach 2011’, no less). Then we have to make space for the Blue Flag and Seaside Awards, the Green Coast and Rural Seaside Awards – 15 at the last count.
We’re very family friendly – and that includes your family pet. Gower in particular is very popular with dog owners, many beaches allowing year-round access including Rhossili, the UK’s top dogfriendly beach according to The Times.

Waterfront Wonderwalks 2012 is a big year for walkers in Wales. By May, the Welsh Government is committed to creating a continuous 861 mile path that runs right around the coast, enabling walkers to ‘discover the shape of the nation’.

Go all the way around Gower There will, of course, be many highlights along these 861 miles. We like to think that the 39 mile walk around the Gower Peninsula will be up there with the best. After all, Gower is the UK’s first ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’, an accolade it won in 1956 on the strength of its stunning coastline. Some of the many places that might stop you in your tracks... Caswell Bay Kick off your boots and go rockpooling. Three Cliffs Bay Stop to savour the ‘Michelin star views’ of the beach and cliffs. Oxwich Explore the dunes and reedbeds, part of a rare coastal nature reserve. Kate Humble reckons ‘it feels like the Pacific coastline of California’. Rhossili take one Go off-piste to the part time tidal island of Worm’s Head – but check the tide times beforehand. Or enjoy it from the ‘shop with a view’, the biggest, most scenic National Trust shop (and visitor centre) in Wales.
Rhossili take two Unpack the binoculars on the three mile beach (the ‘king’ of Gower) and see if you can spot basking sharks, grey seals and bottlenose dolphins. And oystercatchers, cormorants, diving gannets and hang gliders.
The Welsh Proms These come in two parts – and are also part of the new Wales Coast Path. You won’t need walking boots for the five-mile promenade along Swansea Bay. Or the two mile seafront walk beside Aberavon Beach. But you will need a camera with a wide angle lens to capture the big bayside views.
Llanrhidian Here’s an unusual sight: sheep grazing on low-lying saltings where you’re never quite sure where land meets sea. They’re lapping it up, and so are we (Gower saltmarsh lamb is world-class). Penclawdd Watch the cockle pickers – it’s a centuries old tradition in north Gower. Then bag a bag, sprinkle with vinegar and pepper, and enjoy.

When you travel 10 or 20 miles in this part of Wales you’ll go from beach to forest, rockpool to waterfall.
Welcome to ‘Waterfall Country’ You’ll find it in the Vale of Neath, a broad valley lined with woods and waterfalls. Walk to the Melincwrt Falls, hidden amongst a dense canopy of trees. Or go to Sgw ˆ d Gwladus, set in a dark, mossy valley that appears almost primeval. It’s ‘Canal Country’ too. Inland waterways are the Vale of Neath’s other classic water feature. Take to the towpath of the Neath Canal and walk to Aberdulais with its canal basin and unique skew bridge. There’s a Swansea Canal Trail, too, starting at Clydach and running up the Tawe Valley. Make for the lakes. Why aren’t more people aware of the tranquil Lliw Valley reservoirs, shielded by woods north of Swansea’s City Centre? For an easy walk follow the three mile trail around the lower lake. You might well have the place all to yourself. The seven mile Pencraig Isaf Walk from the Glyncorrwg Ponds Mountain Bike Centre leads you through lovely larch woodland, but also takes in terraced houses from former coalmining communities and a railway line built by engineering genius Isambard Kingdom Brunel. All ways Gower. You’ve done Gower by coast (see the previous pages). Now it’s the turn of the Gower Way, a 35 mile cross country route. It’s extremely walker friendly – the route, split into three bite-sized sections, is waymarked all the way. If legend is to be believed, you’ll be following in footsteps fit for a king when you get to Arthur’s Stone, a high and mighty landmark with far reaching views. Bussy boots. Our ‘Walking by Bus’ green initiative gets you out and about without a car by promoting short walks linked to bus routes. Gower in particular is well served by this popular service. And now for something completely different. Follow in the footsteps of Richard Burton. The three mile trail in Afan Forest Park, named after the great actor takes you from his home village of Pontrhydyfen to Cwmafan.

Things you might not know about Swansea... We’re home to Wales’ oldest museum. Which happens to be just across the road from Wales’ newest museum, the exciting, interactive National Waterfront Museum that puts you in the driving seat. We’re very green as well as sandy, with over 50 parks and gardens. Four Swansea beauty spots have won the coveted Green Flag award, the gardening ‘Oscar’ – Clyne Gardens, Singleton Botanic Gardens, Victoria Park and Brynmill Park. We’re extremely proud of celebrated son Dylan Thomas. But he’s not the only one. There’s also Russell T Davies, reinventor of Dr Who. And Gavin and Stacey’s Joanna Page reckons Swansea ‘just feels warm and safe and I know I’m home’.
On second thoughts... We’re not that small. There’s nothing parochial about our bright, breezy city. The Swans are up there in the Premier League. We have super sports stadia and swimming pools that are the envy of other, bigger cities. Our multi-purpose LC, Wales’ number one attraction, defines what 21st century leisure centres should all be about.
We’re a waterfront city with a proper prom. And it goes on… and on, for five miles. You can walk it, bike it or take a trip on the ‘little train’ along the route of the world’s first passenger railway. On the way play golf, pop into the park or splash around in the lido. And end it all with a stroll along the Promenade.

‘Swansea without Mumbles is like an ice cream without the flake’. Dylan Thomas didn’t say that. But it sums up nicely the way in which Mumbles tops off the city experience. Think of all the things you like about the seaside. Then add a dash of urban sophistication and – voila! – there you have it. Mumbles is salty and stylish. It has a pier and a headland. There are boats, bistros and a beach, art and craft galleries and boutiques, cafés and parlours serving lip-smacking Welsh Italian ice cream.

And up above, there’s a well preserved medieval castle that goes by the lovely name of Oystermouth.
of a kind Dylan Thomas and Richard Burton. Chalk and chalk. Or, if you prefer, cheese and cheese. They shared so many characteristics, good and bad: a profound love of language both written and spoken, charisma, volatility and personalities massively forged by their Welsh roots.

Always a handsome stronghold, it’s looking especially good thanks to a recent facelift, which has improved public access and given it a dazzling 30ft /10m high glass bridge which opens up parts of the castle hidden away for centuries. There are yet more reasons to visit – the commanding views across Swansea Bay from the battlements and the historic events and re-enactments held during the summer months.
Burton was a huge Thomas fan (and the greatest interpreter of the poet’s masterwork, Under Milk Wood). He was born just down the road in the village of Pontrhydyfen. Thomas is indelibly linked with Swansea. Both now share a presence in the City thanks to the recent opening of the Richard Burton Centre at Swansea
Almost every nook and cranny of Swansea has Thomas connections. Cwmdonkin Park, which inspired some of his most famous work is just down the (very steep) hill from his Uplands house, preserved as a Thomas time capsule and now open to visitors. Another Thomas treasure trove is the Dylan Thomas Centre, where a unique exhibition celebrates the poet’s life and work. Each autumn, it also holds the Dylan Thomas Festival. 13 visitswanseabay.com

Mighty Museums Swansea’s National Waterfront Museum is guaranteed to leave a big impression, covering 300 years of innovation and industry all under one roof. The way it tells the story, through hands-on and high-tech exhibits, is innovative in itself, engaging and entertaining visitors of all ages. Its neighbour, Swansea Museum, is completely different. Wales’ oldest – and possibly quirkiest – museum is endearingly old school, an Aladdin’s Cave of dinosaur bones, Egyptian mummies and a Welsh kitchen.
Aberdulais Waterfall Intriguing National Trust site combining industrial heritage with natural beauty, attracting artists of the stature of JMW Turner. It’s a fascinating place. Nowadays it provides hydroenergy that’s as green as its surroundings. Neath Abbey Once called ‘the fairest in Wales’. Difficult to believe that this serene ruin once served as an iron foundry.
That’s entertainment Our eclectic arts scene takes centre stage at many venues, including Swansea’s Grand Theatre and the Dylan Thomas Centre. South Wales Miners’ Museum Captures the dignity and dangers of the coalminer’s life in the Valleys. Gower Heritage Centre This crafts and rural life museum has workshops, a puppet theatre, restored 12th century watermill and woollen mill.

Then catch the Bay Rider ‘little train’ or hire a bike and cycle along the prom (no cars allowed) to Clyne Gardens, where Swansea’s green fingers have been hard at work nurturing azaleas and rhododendrons, bluebell woods and bog gardens.

Time to head for the hills. And into the woods. Afan Forest Park is big, very green, very long and a very steep sided vale.

You’ve already ticked off Oystermouth Castle. But there are still quite a few more to go.
Then go valley hopping again to the Vale of Neath; like the Afan Forest Park, it’s a place where the influences of man and nature are in balance.
Weobley, on Gower’s north coast, was also more manor house than castle. For the unvarnished real thing head for Pennard, a fortress ruin almost lost in the dunes near Parkmill, or the remnants of Loughor Castle.
You’ll see it in the scenery and at Gnoll Country Park, where fancy cascades tumble through landscaped grounds.
Afan is where mountain bikers come for their adrenaline rush as they whizz down ‘The Wall’ or tackle the epic Skyline Trail. This welcoming forest also serves up gentle trails, family cycling routes, horse riding and walking. There’s fishing too, at the picturesque Glyncorrwg Ponds or hop over to Lliw Valley for breathtaking lakeside views.
For past times a little closer to home round off the day with a visit to the Family History Centre at Swansea’s Civic Centre.
Take yourself off to Gower and Oxwich Castle, which starred on the 16th century property market as a ‘des res’ trophy home with the latest must-have mock-military features. En route to the next, stop by Arthur’s Stone, for a 360 degree view around Gower.

Swansea Bay welcomes the Olympic Flame On 27th July 2012 the eyes of the world will be on London for the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games as the Olympic Flame arrives at the Olympic Stadium for the lighting of the cauldron. The Olympic Flame which represents peace, unity and friendship arrives in the UK on 18th May and starts its 70 day journey around the UK towards the Stadium carried by 8,000 inspirational Torchbearers. On 26th May the Olympic Flame will reach Swansea Bay. Torchbearers will carry the Olympic Flame through the area as we celebrate the people and places of Swansea Bay and demonstrate that the Olympic spirit is alive and well.
November ‘Sparks in the Dark’ Fireworks Display (5th) Christmas in Swansea – Parade, Illuminations, Christmas Markets and of course… Waterfront Winterland! (from the end of November)
This momentous occasion will be marked by an evening celebration concert in Singleton Park, featuring music, dance and sports activities on a big main stage. Castle Square’s Big Screen in the City Centre will become a Live Site from 1st May and will show the Olympic and Paralympic Games throughout the Games.

Travelling around Swansea Bay Helicopters and personal jets aside, you’ll probably be travelling to Swansea Bay by car, train or coach. We can take over from there, thanks to our super convenient local bus services. Coming into Swansea for a day, for example, you can use one of three ‘park & ride’ sites to get to the City. They’re easy to use – and cheaper than City Centre parking. Our buses will take you almost everywhere. The walks, waterfalls and hidden wonders in the valleys of Neath Port Talbot are easily reached by bus.
