2.22.22 What is 2.22.22?
Get ready for the Newton sesquicentennial! The City of Newton was officially incorporated with the State of Kansas on Feb. 22, 1872. The beginnings of a community existed as early as 2021 as a rough little cow town. As a result, Newton plans to celebrate our 150th anniversary beginning this summer and continuing into 2022. Celebration plans are being developed and include special events commemorating the various aspects of Newton’s history, including our diverse local cultural heritage, partnerships for activities with various businesses and organizations, art exhibits and more. A sesquicentennial T-shirt will be released later this year with commemorative items to follow in 2022.

Newton welcomes official flag in 2020 If you have been to Newton before, you may notice an addition to our flag poles on your next visit. In 2020, the city sponsored a community contest to design an official city flag. The design below is the winner and represents Newton as a crossroads as well as its railroad and wheat heritage. Several businesses have created “flag swag” items ranging from T-shirts and coffee mugs to tea towels, hats and greeting cards.

If you are looking for family fun in the fresh air, Newton is a great place to visit. From camping and hiking to golf and picnics, local and county parks and area amenities offer many options.
Sand Creek Trail & Newton parks

Called the “trail between two cities,” the Sand Creek Trail is one of Newton’s most popular outdoor options. This mostly-paved trail follows its namesake creek and passes by several of Newton’s 17 city parks, including the 40-acre Athletic Park at the trail’s south end. The

north end of the trail features interpretive signs in North Newton and at Bethel College. Along the way are restrooms, benches and water fountains for both people and pets. Traveling with your furbaby? They can get some outdoor time, too, at the fenced dog park located in Centennial Park. And coming in summer of 2021 is a newly rebuilt pool in Athletic Park.

Those more interested in observing sports can catch a Newton Rebels game during the summer at Klein-Scott Field in Centennial Park. Or mark a calendar for the July 4 weekend, when the Mexican American Fast Pitch Softball Tournament is played – a Newton tradition for more than 75 years. Bethel College and Newton Public Schools also offer public events in a variety of sports.
Cycling
Day camps
Keep the kids entertained with day camp activities at the Newton Recreation Center and Kauffman Museum. The Rec Center’s Discovery Camp is a day camp option during the summer. Children can attend single days or sign up by the week. Mini-sessions are also offered during school breaks. Activities are offered on-site and participants also enjoy swimming and field trips. Uncle Carl’s Camps are weekly day camps for a variety of ages featuring lessons in art, environment and nature and history at the Kauffman Museum.
Annual local events include the Chisholm Trail Bike Ride in May and the MCC Flatlander Bicycle Ride each September. Those rides feature multiple

route choices for cyclists and family fun rides. In addition to local cycling, Newton sits along the TransAmerica Trail, a coast-to-coast route that brings long distance cyclists through town each year.

Carriage Factory Art Gallery anchors the downtown art scene with regular exhibits featuring local and regional artists in a variety of mediums. The gallery also plans regular classes and
activities and a self-guided studio tour. The Robert W. Regier Gallery at Bethel College also features regional exhibits along with faculty and student art. Newton Recreation Center offers make-and-take painting and art classes for adults and children.
Murals & public art
Newton and North Newton boast multiple pieces of public art, which prominently features the Blue Sky Sculpture in Centennial Park near 12th Street and Kansas Avenue. The sculpture is one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas Art and captures the whimsy of the
Kansas sky. Murals are also taking root in Newton. The Sunflower Mural is a colorful addition to downtown, located behind the building at 6th and Main. Several others are visible throughout the community and more are planned. The Mennonite Settler Statue in Athletic Park honors Mennonite farmers and Kansas’ wheat heritage.
Museums
The Newton area has three museums. The Warkentin House Museum offers visitors a glimpse into life in Kansas in the Victorian era and tells the story of Bernhard and Mina Warkentin and their impact on Kansas’ wheat history. The Harvey County Historical Museum and Archives is a great stop for both history lovers and researchers. The Kauffman Museum tells the story of the Mennonite migration in addition to hosting special events and exhibits.
Performing art
The performing arts are well represented in Newton. The community enjoys regular performances by Newton Mid-Kansas Symphony Orchestra and Bethel College students and staff as well as visiting lecturers and performers. The symphony orchestra typically plays four concerts each year. The first concert of the 2021-22 season is a virtual program with special food in June. Visitors can keep track of other local performances through the Newton Arts & Culture group. Throughout 2020 many cultural organizations created new virtual programming, including Newton Public Library. The virtual events are often free and accessible to anyone through Facebook.

Self-guided tours
The Downtown Newton Walking Tour is the perfect match for a stroll along Main Street. It features information about buildings and in some cases previous businesses. It is available for free at City Hall, Anderson’s and Newton Public Library or online at ToNewton. com. Coming in 2021 will be a companion Historic Newton Children’s Activity Book that highlights local history with kid-friendly activities. Also available is the Newton Historic Driving Tour guide, which highlights local historic homes along three routes.

Mennonite/German cuisine
Our Mennonite heritage shines in our restaurants. We invite you to taste our culture while you are learning about it in our museums and public spaces. Bierocks are a popular staple in Newton. Fresh bread dough is filled with cabbage, ground beef, and sometimes onions and cheese.

Bierocks are on the menu daily at The Breadbasket and make frequent appearances at local fairs and festivals. Want more? The Breadbasket also serves an all-you-can-eat German buffet on Friday and Saturday evenings featuring Verenika with gravy, German sausage, Borscht, Zwieback and more. Want some to take home? Take-and-bake options are also often available at Prairy and Gillespie Meats.
Mexican cuisine
Mexican American heritage also runs deep in the Newton community. Fried flour taco fundraisers are common at events and gatherings, and multiple restaurants serve up a wide variety of flavors and styles. Acapulco Restaurant has been a downtown Newton favorite for more than 30 years. Enjoy a full bar, outdoor seating and a menu variety that includes family recipes. Other choices include Kikos, specializing in carne asada, Casa Fiesta, and Del Puente Café. You can also find one of several food trucks.
Burgers & diners
Sometimes, you just want a good hamburger … or cheeseburger, have it your way! Several Newton restaurants serve up good diner-style burgers and sides. Gurty’s Burgers & Shakes offers customizable combos along with signature burgers, including the Gooey Gurty with creamy mac and cheese added for good measure. Top off the meal with a handmade milkshake or a cold beer and settle in to watch your favorite
sports event on one of the restaurants TVs. Other burger options include Moxie Bar & Grill, Curtis C’s Diner and Charlie’s Restaurant.
Pizza & pasta
How about a slice of pizza or some standout pasta? Back Alley Pizza and Genova have you covered. Back Alley features specialty pizzas with house-made dough and sauce along with customizable options and hot subs baked in a wood-fired brick oven with outdoor seating just off Main Street in downtown Newton. Genova offers house-made pasta and sauces and daily specials. Both restaurants were named in the top 20 locally owned restaurants by Kansas Magazine.
Coffee
Need an early morning or mid-day pick-me-up? Grab a cup of coffee. Whether you’re on the move or want to sit and relax, you’ll find options here. For a unique coffee experience, hit 12 Brew Drive Thru. This former car was is converted into a full-service coffee bar, perfect for when you are on the go. Want to sit a spell? Norm’s Coffee Bar’s downtown location is perfect for a break from shopping in the historic district. On the weekends, don’t miss one of the gourmet waffle offerings. Mojo’s Coffee Bar is located at Bethel College, across the street from the Kauffman Museum. In addition to coffee, Mojo’s serves housemade salads, wraps and soups daily for lunch and special breakfast items on weekends.

You can find single servings and pints at Prairy, which will happily provide you a spoon for immediate enjoyment. Breadbasket sells homemade pies whole or by the slice. Take one to go, or enjoy a little with your meal. Mojo’s Coffee Bar offers a rotating, seasonal selection of treats. Druber’s Donuts, a downtown favorite for decades, is open overnight. Crust & Crumb Co. bakes up both sweet and savory options to sell outside of its kitchen on Saturday mornings. Norm’s also sells a selection of baked goods. Newton’s art community supports several shops that feature homemade art and craft items from local artists. Carriage Factory Art Gallery is a must-see for anyone who likes handmade gifts. Gallery artists create everything from large-scale paintings to
jewelry, children’s toys and soaps and greeting cards. For those who like to make their own, The Creation Station is stocked with yarn of all types and the walls at Charlotte’s Sew Natural are lined with quilting fabrics and patterns and is a destination for any quilter. At the Chisholm Trail Mall, Phoenix Originals offers pottery and supplies ready for visitors to paint their own creations.
Kansas made items
Prairy Market & Deli specializes in Kansas-made items. Its shelves are lined with packaged goods, and the store expanded to add natural home and health care products in 2020. In addition to packaged goods, Prairy also features a peppernut production kitchen – complete with large windows and stools – so visitors can watch as one a batch of their six specialty cookies is made. It also offers a selection of packages of Kansas craft beer. Anderson’s Book Shop also features Kansas items, including books written by and about Kansans and the western trails. It is also Newton’s goto spot for college and professional sports team gear.

Faith & Life’s children’s room is full of books, stuffed animals, commemorative items for babies and more. Anderson’s also features a wall of children’s games and toys as does Main Street Co./Kitchen Corner. Ride the Train Amtrak Information Newton’s Amtrak Station is located at 414 N. Main in downtown Newton. The facility features an enclosed waiting area, wheelchairaccessible restrooms, and a ticket office.
Parking
Long-term parking is available approximately one block west of the station behind the Post Office. The parking lot can be accessed from W. 4th or W. 5th. There is no charge for the parking. Shuttle service to Wichita
Amtrak offers a bus shuttle service to and from Wichita to connect passengers to the Newton rail station. The northbound bus leaves daily at 1:10 a.m. from the bus station in Wichita to catch the 2:45 a.m. train in Newton. The southbound bus leaves Newton at 4 a.m. for Wichita. The bus also connects the Southwest Chief and Heartland Flyer lines. Newton is on the Southwest Chief route, which runs daily from Chicago to Los Angeles via the American Southwest. The route is part of the Trails & Rails Program, and at times National Park Service guides are onboard the Southwest Chief. The train departs Newton westbound for Los Angeles at 2:45 a.m. daily. It departs Newton eastbound for Chicago at 2:19 a.m. daily.
