European Green Capital 2016 Ljubljana, a proud award winner Ljubljana is the European Green Capital 2016. This prestigious title, awarded annually by the European Commission to a city with high environmental standards and ambitious sustainable development goals, was given to the City Municipality of Ljubljana on 24 June 2014 in Copenhagen. The fact that Ljubljana received a Europe-wide award of this kind is a valuable recognition of its efforts to improve its environment, economy, and quality of life. The award was received with great delight by everyone in Ljubljana involved in encouraging green thinking, living, and development, and is seen as an obligation to continue to fulfil sustainability goals and introduce more improvements. Other cities to have received the prestigious European Green Capital title so far include Stockholm, Hamburg, Vitoria-Gasteiz, Nantes, Copenhagen, Bristol, and Essen. By winning the title, Ljubljana became a European model for how to organize urban life in such a way as to create a city that is friendly to the environment, its residents, and visitors. Ljubljana's green vision leads to a more pleasant urban life today and in the future, and makes the experiences included in this guide healthier and more authentic.

A green greeting Welcome to the European Green Capital 2016 We are delighted to welcome you in a city where all of Europe meets. The European Green Capital 2016 is a place where the time it takes for people in other capitals to travel from one end of the city to the other can be spent on going for a stroll, sitting down for an ice cream or a drink or enjoying another pleasurable activity. It is sometimes said of Ljubljana that it is easier to traverse it on foot than to pronounce its name. Here at Ljubljana Tourism, we are proud of our city and its achievements. Thinking and feeling green, we often cycle or walk around the city centre, which is closed to motor traffic. What delights us most is people's enthusiasm about Ljubljana and the positive feelings that bring visitors and locals together. We believe that the Slovenian capital is simply WOW! Discover your own WOW nooks, indulge in the flavours of the Taste Ljubljana dishes, and explore the city's surrounding areas. Feel Slovenia, a green country that has the word 'love' in its name, and get to love Ljubljana, whose name sounds very similar to the Slovenian word 'ljubljena', meaning 'the loved one'. We really like this wordplay because, if for no other reason, so many people from around the world fall in love with our vibrant city hosting countless events each year. As we would like Ljubljana to have a place in your heart too, we have created this little guide with tips on how and where to enjoy yourself in the European Green Capital 2016. The guide includes a few pages that are yours to fill as we would like you to be an active co-creator of the green heartbeat of the city. You are invited to enter our giveaway by collecting green fingerprints at the green points described in this guide and marked on the map at the end of it. Using this guide, you will discover time and again that Ljubljana is a comfortable capital made to the measure of man, one that has preserved the friendliness of modestly-sized European cities while providing all the amenities of big metropolises. The city centre is a mosaic of picturesque red-roofed buildings from which views stretch out to green hills − the castle hill, Šišenski hrib, Rožnik, and Šmarna gora, which are one of the reasons why practically everyone in the city keeps a pair of hiking or running shoes. You too are invited to enjoy the city, climb those green hills for stunning views, and make a few resolutions to lead a greener life. While strolling around Ljubljana, you can quench your thirst at drinking fountains dispensing clean natural water that has not undergone any technological treatment. This is a luxury rarely found in capital cities and the reason why a large water-themed exhibition has been set up by the City Museum of Ljubljana. When you need a rest, sit down in one of the little city centre parks or experience the huge Tivoli Park, the green lungs of Ljubljana. In the historical city centre, cafés on the relaxing Ljubljanica river embankments tempt you to have a sweet treat, galleries and museums are full of good stories, and countless little restaurants compete for your attention. We want you to have plenty of pleasant green experiences that will make you simply want to say WOW! The European Green Capital 2016 has a big heart and we are delighted to share it with you. Petra Stušek and her team at Ljubljana Tourism

Ljubljana has a big heart

Ljubljana Tourism brings together a team of people thinking green. Together with our friendly dragon mascot, we love to walk and cycle around the city.

At the Milan EXPO 2015, Ljubljana and the Central Slovenia region put up an interactive installation called WOW, which livened up the areas in front of the Slovenian and European Union's pavilions.

Orientation How to use the Guide to Green Ljubljana The Guide to Green Ljubljana, which includes several pages that you can fill with your impressions of the city and thus create your own little green diary, is divided into several content sections, the largest being 'Green points of Ljubljana'. The section 'Green points of Ljubljana' is followed by 'Green guided tours of Ljubljana', 'Green cuisine', 'Green transport', and 'Other green experiences'. The last section of the guide, 'Trips to surrounding areas', introduces you to opportunities for green cycling and hiking trips. In the middle of the guide, you will find all you need to know about our Green Gift Giveaway. You are invited to collect five fingerprint stamps and share this achievement of yours with us. Ljubljana's green symbols Little Dragon of Ljubljana In Ljubljana, wherever you look, chances are that you will see a dragon. Rather than spitting fire like they once did in fairy tales, today they only breathe invisible green energy. The Ljubljana Dragon can be found sitting at the top of the castle tower on the city's coat of arms, on the Dragon Bridge, and in any of the city's souvenir shops. The most active member of the Dragon of Ljubljana family is Little Dragon, the city's mascot, whom you may spot jumping around cheerfully in the city's streets and at large events.

Your European Green Capital

Check out the green mobility options

In the European Green Capital 2016, whose relaxed character is at its most obvious on sunny afternoons and evenings, when the city centre is like a huge open-air living room, you can reach any city centre location in less than 15 minutes on foot. Ljubljana has a wide network of bus services. A popular transport option is the BicikeLJ self-service bicycle hire network, which allows you to ride safely and comfortably between 36 docking stations across the city. At any news stand, you can get Urbana, a top-up city card which you can use to pay for city bus and funicular fares, borrow BicikeLJ bicycles, and pay parking charges. For more information on how to use the BicikeLJ network, see page 42. The pride of the city as far as green mobility is concerned is its fleet of electric vehicles called Kavalir, which can help you out with a free ride within the city centre. To find out how to book a ride, see page 41.

Learn the story of Ljubljana

In Ljubljana, all of Europe comes together. The city has a central European character with a relaxed Mediterranean feel. Wherever you look there are green surprises that bring freshness to life in this city with picturesque medieval, Baroque, Art Nouveau, and modern architecture. Did you know that it was in Ljubljana where archaeologists found the world's oldest wooden wheel with an axle, made and used 5,200 years ago by skilful prehistoric lake dwellers in the Ljubljana Marshes? About three millennia later, ancient Romans fell in love with the site of the present-day Ljubljana and built the city of Emona. In 2014, Ljubljana celebrated the 2000th anniversary of the date when Emona was put on the map of the Roman Empire.

Do not miss the WOW experiences Running in Tivoli Park Join runners of all generations making their way through Tivoli Park, the city's green lungs, and further on to the fragrant forests of the Tivoli, Rožnik, and Šišenski Hrib Landscape Park. A good place to warm up is the Jakopič Promenade, which leads from the city centre to the Tivoli Mansion, where you can enjoy views of the park and the city centre beyond. Waterside cycle path from Špica to Fužine Castle This nice and flat waymarked cycle path along the river Ljubljanica is perfect for a family or romantic trip. It takes you from the Špica embankment in the Prule area of Ljubljana to Fužine Castle, a Renaissance residence on the eastern edge of the city housing the Museum of Architecture and Design. To return to the city centre, take the cycle path on the other bank of the river. Do not miss the Ljubljanica Sluice Gate, designed by Jože Plečnik, Ljubljana's most famous architect. www.visitljubljana.com

Green points of Ljubljana Špica Špica, the renovated part of the Ljubljanica river embankment in the Prule area, not far away from the city centre, is perfect for sunbathing and enjoying river views. This area has traditionally been used as a town beach and its present-day wooden terraces, located at the point where the Ljubljanica river splits into its main branch and the Gruber Channel, still make it look like one, while at the same time making you feel as if you were on a ship's deck. The Gruber Channel was built by Gabrijel Gruber more than 200 years ago to protect the city from floods. Today, Špica is the site of a quay and a café perfect for chilling out and watching birds and other aquatic wildlife.

Green points of Ljubljana Trnovski pristan The Trnovski pristan embankment, located just a short walk from Špica, is a tribute to Jože Plečnik, the city's greatest modern architect, who saw the Ljubljanica river embankments as key to the modern urban development of Ljubljana as a city full of parks, public squares, colonnades, and social gathering spaces along its main waterway. The embankment offers beautiful views of Ljubljana Castle and the Hradecky Bridge, the second oldest bridge across the Ljubljanica, which has, since its renovation and relocation, been connecting the Krakovo and Prule quarters of Ljubljana.

Green points of Ljubljana The gardens of Krakovo Between the Eipprova ulica and Krakovska ulica streets, you can find one of Ljubljana's few surviving residential areas of once suburban houses and about 30 gardens where the crunchy Ljubljana iceberg lettuce and other garden crops have been grown since the middle ages. In the 17th century, the so called ‘lettuce ladies of Krakovo' were known to come to the market in the middle of the night as their lettuce would sell out in the earliest hours of the morning. Today, the gardens of Krakovo provide space for an interesting type of collaboration: the gardens are being rented to gardening enthusiasts in exchange for fresh crops.

Birds are tame there and you should not be surprised if they mistake you for a bird keeper and try to sit on your hand. Green points of Ljubljana Sava Recreational and Educational Centre Only a few decades ago, people would find it hard to believe that the abandoned villages along the river Sava on the edge of Ljubljana would be turned into an idyllic recreation area with horse-riding, cycling, and hiking paths and numerous picnic spots, where both the locals and visitors enjoy themselves having barbecue parties, which are so popular in Slovenia. Children are thrilled by the Centre's little animal farm and the opportunity to ride little horses.
