Welcome to the University of Tennessee and the great city of Knoxville. We couldn’t be happier to host you on Rocky Top! There’s never been a better time to be at UT. Over the last several years, our campus has undergone an amazing transformation to provide our students with some of the best learning experiences imaginable. We take great pride in being known as the Volunteers. We lead and serve others in our quest to make a difference across the state, the nation, and our world. I encourage you to visit the Torchbearer statue during your visit and reflect on what it means to bear a torch for others. In June 2017, I moved to Knoxville to become the director of undergraduate admissions and the assistant vice provost of enrollment management, and I’ve fallen in love with the campus and our particular shade of orange. I know you’ll love it here as much as I do. Go Vols!

On the Cover 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the Torchbearer statue in Circle Park. The Torchbearer inspires our Volunteer family to give light to others.

PLAN YOUR VISIT: Campus The place to start is the Visitors Center. • Through December 2018, visit us at 2712 Neyland Drive. • Beginning January 2019, visit us in the new Student Union on Phillip Fulmer Way. 865-946-TOUR (8687) The Volunteer Statue Affectionately known as the Torchbearer, this statue represents our university’s rich tradition of leadership and service.

The Hill The iconic old campus stands on this rising bank above the north shore of the Tennessee River. Neyland Stadium Home to the Tennessee football team and, on game days in the fall, 102,455 enthusiastic Vol fans. Hodges Library The main library is a favorite gathering place, with convenient access to academic resources, One Stop Student Services, common areas, and instant energy—Starbucks. Clarence Brown Theatre This 574-seat theater is home to one of the finest small professional theater companies in the country.

OUR TRADITIONS Having been around for more than 220 years, we’ve established many meaningful symbols and beloved traditions. Some are distinguished, and some are just plain fun. Below are our favorites. utk.edu/aboutut/traditions

Tennessee Volunteers References to the Tennessee Volunteers began during the War of 1812, when Tennesseans volunteered en masse in response to President James Madison’s call for service. Our football team earned the moniker in 1902. Others may be bulldogs or tigers, but we are Volunteers—proud of our rich tradition of leadership and service.

The Volunteer Creed “One that beareth a torch shadoweth oneself to give light to others.” The Volunteer Creed was inscribed on small replicas of the Torchbearer statue beginning in 1937. It is now displayed at the base of the Torchbearer in Circle Park and is the university community’s guiding principle.

Pride of the Southland Band More than 300 members strong, the band has made the song “Rocky Top” famous. It leads the Vol Walk before each home game and forms the T that welcomes our football team onto the field. Known for its precision and style, it’s the only college band to march in 12 consecutive presidential inaugural parades.

Big Orange Friday UT’s distinctive orange color was inspired by a small cluster of orange and white daisies on the Hill. The university encourages all members of the Volunteer family, wherever they are, to wear orange every Friday to celebrate and support the university.

‘Rocky Top’ “Rocky Top” has been UT’s heartfelt anthem since the early 1970s. On game days in the fall, the song resonates from Neyland Stadium as Big Orange Country sings at the top of its lungs to cheer on our Volunteers.

Smokey Smokey, a Bluetick Coonhound, is famous for leading the Vols on the run through the T before each home football game. A costumed version of Smokey first emerged in the 1970s. Known to sport a tuxedo, overalls, or a Big Orange jersey, he’s a top collegiate mascot and a star on and off the field.

FINANCING YOUR UT EDUCATION

College is a big investment, and we offer a variety of funding programs to demonstrate our investment in you! More than 80 percent of UT students and 90 percent of entering freshmen receive financial aid and scholarships from federal, state, and private sources. Contact One Stop Student Services at 865-974-1111 or visit onestop.utk.edu/financial-aid for information about the scholarships below and other financing opportunities. Volunteer Scholarship: Available to incoming freshmen with a 3.8 UT Weighted Core GPA and at least a 28 ACT score who apply for admission by the December 15 deadline. We also offer a Volunteer Scholarship for transfer students. Competitive Scholarships: Each year, committees consider incoming and current students for competitive four-year, one-year, departmental, and campus-wide scholarships. Incoming freshmen must apply for admission by November 1 and complete the scholarship application by December 15. Need-Based Awards: UT is committed to providing a quality education regardless of a family’s financial situation and offers several scholarships based on financial need. UT Pledge and UT Promise Scholarships: These two UT-funded scholarships assist eligible in-state students. HOPE Scholarship: The state of Tennessee offers lottery-funded scholarships to assist qualifying in-state students who graduate from a Tennessee high school. Students must submit a FAFSA annually.

August 1: Application Opens Apply at vip.utk.edu or commonapp.org.

October 1: FAFSA Application Opens Submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid at fafsa.gov. Some funds are limited, so we encourage you to submit your FAFSA as early as possible. UT’s code is 003530.

November 1: Priority Admission Deadline Apply by the priority admission deadline if you want to be fully considered for competitive scholarships and honors and scholars programs. Once admitted, you must complete separate scholarship and/or honors applications by December 15.

December 15: Regular Admission Deadline* Apply by this date for regular admission and to be considered for institutional scholarships, including the Volunteer Scholarship. December 15 is also the deadline to complete applications to be fully considered for competitive scholarship and honors and scholars programs if you submitted an admission application by November 1. *Admission applications will still be accepted after December 15, although you will not be considered for institutional scholarships.

January 15: FAFSA Priority Filing Date Submit the FAFSA at fafsa.gov by UT’s priority filing date. The FAFSA is required for UT, federal, and state awards, including the HOPE Scholarship, and some funds are limited. UT’s code is 003530.

May 1: Confirmation Deadline New Vols must confirm their enrollment to UT by May 1. After confirming your enrollment, complete your housing contract and orientation registration. For dates and deadlines for transfer, international, and other applicants, visit apply.utk.edu.
