Cruises

Cowes Harbour Commission is keen to promote Cowes as an important destination for small and medium-sized cruise liners. This is in response to the rising demand in the cruise ship market, including growth in the northern European luxury cruise market.

E

ach season Cowes attracts a number of visits from cruise ships, which anchor off Cowes and land their passengers at Trinity Landing to spend the day visiting the town and touring the Island. The popular seaside town of Cowes - the world's most famous sailing destination - is the south coast destination of choice for many visitors to the UK. Cowes is ideally located on the central south coast of the UK, and the harbour is an excellent port-of-call for a European or UK cruise itinerary. Cowes is situated adjacent to the main shipping route of the English Channel, and just a very short diversion is needed for cruise ships to anchor off Cowes, in the shelter of the Isle of Wight, with a quick 5 minute tender run giving your passengers access to Cowes and the whole of the Isle of Wight. After alighting at Trinity Landing in the heart of Cowes, passengers can spend the day sampling the delights of local shops and cafés, or opt for range of interesting coach excursion options, including themed trips, and traditional English cream teas in beautiful gardens, with Queen Victoria’s magnificent Osborne House close by in East Cowes. Cowes town provides visitors with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Cowes High Street is pedestrianised and packed with independent shops, boutiques and galleries as well as chandlers and purveyors of the most famous brands of sailing gear. With centuries of Island history and truly amazing landscapes, it really doesn’t matter what the weather is doing. However, there’s more chance of enjoying some sunshine on the Isle of Wight than anywhere else in England! The Isle of Wight has a long established

reputation for having more visitor attractions per square mile than anywhere else in the UK and you’ll find yourself running out of time before you run out of things to do! Over half of the Isle of Wight is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and there are almost 30 miles of ‘Heritage Coast’, a designation applied to coastlines of only the highest quality in England and Wales. The Isle of Wight boasts multi award-winning food growers and producers, with inspiring places to enjoy eating and drinking. Fine dining at luxury hotel venues or great pub food served in a beautiful rural or coastal location with every kind of café, bistro or restaurant in between. Previous cruise ship visits to Cowes Passenger cruise ships are always welcomed at Cowes Harbour. Cruise ships that have recently enjoyed a visit to Cowes include, L'Austral, MS Hamburg, MS Hanseatic, MS Deutschland, MS Columbus 2, and regular visitor MS Europa: It’s a glorious, sunny day in Cowes with temperatures in the high 20s Celsius, a perfect day for cruise ship MS Europa, the flagship of Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, to visit the Isle of Wight. MS Europa arrived from Hamburg with 214 passengers on board and anchored off Cowes at 0745 - allowing passengers a whole day for sightseeing before departing at 1800 in the evening. Martin Everett of Denholm Wilhelmsen Ltd, the ship agency acting for MS Europa, said: "Europa's passengers were tendered from the Cowes anchorage to Trinity Landing pontoon for a variety of coach tours and for some, travel around the Island in classic cars. The great weather helped to show off the Island at its very best!"

Explore Renowned the world over, Cowes is the maritime gateway to the Isle of Wight, welcoming thousands of boats to Cowes Week and its other prestigious sailing regattas. Boat owners have moorings in the marinas on each side of the river Medina, bringing a cosmopolitan feel to the coastal towns of Cowes and East Cowes.

T

he iconic chain ferry (known locally as ‘The Floating Bridge’) shuttles between the two and brings the two sides of the river mouth together. With the Red Funnel car ferry from Southampton docking in East Cowes and the Red Jet bringing foot passengers to the Fountain Yard in Cowes, the harbour is a busy, bustling waterway, especially in the summer months. Cowes Harbour is a Trust Port, which means it has no shareholders or other owners, but is managed for the benefit of its users, or ‘stakeholders’. It is run by Cowes Harbour Commission, a group of 10 Harbour Commissioners, who are appointed through a public selection process. These appoint a Harbour Master, to whom day-to-day responsibility for running the harbour and the harbour team is delegated. There are excellent facilities for visiting and local boat owners in the various marinas in the town. The marinas include Cowes Yacht Haven is the most central marina with berthing for up to 260 boats. It’s also a conference centre and can seat up to 400 people Shepherd’s Wharf, which is further down the river toward the chain ferry terminal, has berthing for 130 visiting boats, 40 residents, and a basin for the exclusive use of dry sailing clients, along with the Sugar Store events centre. East Cowes Marina has 380 berths and their own on-site pub, The Lifeboat. Cowes is buzzing year round with a range of quality independent shops and places to eat. During Cowes week, The Parade on Cowes seafront is taken over with a stage, bars and stalls filling the area and providing opportunities for dancing in the streets! The historic Royal Yacht Squadron sits at the furthest end of the Parade, and the Royal Ocean Racing Club incorporating the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club and the Royal London Sailing Club also have their club houses here. The Island Sailing Club is close by with entrance on the High Street and tender mooring for members, showers and toilets and Cowes Corinthian Yacht Club is at the other end of the High Street, with similar facilities plus marina berths and shoreside boat storage facilities. Many regattas are held in Cowes throughout the sailing season, including the Cowes Classics Week, the Panerai Classic Week, Cowes Week, Etchells World, Little Britain and the annual Powerboat Race. In 2015 the Royal Yacht Squadron celebrated its bicentenary with all the RYS boat owners and seven crowned heads of Europe visiting Cowes. Boating history and heritage is never far away in Cowes. A visit to the Classic Boat Museum is a must. The museum gallery tells the story of the area’s yachting heritage and has a showroom of iconic boats. Britannia, the first single handed row boat to cross the Atlantic is here along with local

boat designer and builder Uffa Fox’s Airbourne Lifeboat. Cowes Maritime Museum in Cowes Library also displays a selection of objects and images which tell the story of Cowes and its important maritime heritage. In East Cowes there is a Heritage Centre on Clarence Road, covering all of East Cowes’ history and both have information on the many boatbuilding companies that were based on both sides of the river. Looking down from the top of the hill above Cowes is Northwood House and park. Northwood is a Grade II listed early Victorian manor house built for the Ward family. It is now looked after by Northwood House Charitable Trust Co. Ltd and provides a stunning location for any event. Many lavish parties were thrown by the Wards throughout the Victorian era when the Island was a popular destination for the royal family. Queen Victoria’s own children often came over from Osborne House along with the rich and famous from all over Great Britain, to enjoy the high society soirées hosted at the house. Queen Victoria’s summer palace, Osborne, sits above East Cowes, looking down over the landscaped grounds to a pretty, private bay. Designed by Prince Albert for his growing family, you can tour the lavish house and grounds, and even swim at the newly opened beach. A major feature film, Victoria and Abdul, about the queen’s relationship with her Indian servant Abdul Karim, starring Judi Dench as Queen Victoria, was filmed in the house and grounds recently, with members of the cast staying in Cowes whilst they were filming here.

For fine dining you might like to try The Albert Cottage on the edge of the Osborne Estate or in Cowes the airy Orangery overlooking the walled garden of the North House hotel. Most of the pubs serve food, but the Cowes Ale House specialises in real ale. The Union Inn in Cowes serves good food, as does The Yachtsman on the seafront and in East Cowes the Lifeboat has great views across the river. Cowes has two curry houses, Saffron Flavours on India and Cowes Tandoori and East Cowes has Taste of India. Tonino’s Italian Restaurant in Cowes is very popular and Corries Cabin fish and chips do a roaring trade. For clothes Cowes has chains such as Fat Face, White Stuff and M&Co; with Musto and Henri Lloyd for your sailing kit. But there are also

locally owned boutiques that you’ll love such as Cowes Dress Agency where you can buy and sell good quality clothing. Need matching t shirts for your crew with your boat’s name? Go to World Leisurewear and you could have them printed the same day. For gifts you must pay a visit to ‘Live Like This’ who have a quirky collection of lovely items and for jewellery there is the beautiful old Benzies shop, purveyors to the royal family for many generations. Or try Drift for something more contemporary and assuredly Fair Trade. If you love sailing photography go to see Ken Beken in his shop at the top of the town – Prince Philip usually drops in when he’s in town. And if you’re looking for a painting or piece of original art Kendalls of Cowes has a lovely gallery off the Parade. On the High Street K1 Britannia have upmarket maritime antiques, paintings and furniture. In Bath Road Kirby of Cowes offer vintage marine period interiors and PHG is a good ware shop and gallery who offer interior design. Do spend some time rooting around in That Shop – you’re bound to find something in its Aladdin’s cave of antiques and bric a brac. The Old Curiosity Shop in East Cowes has antique and second hand goods and East Cowes Emporium has ornamental antiques. You have to visit the yacht chandlery Pascal Atkey in Cowes opposite the ferry terminal to see its vintage shopfront and interior, although there are several other chandleries such as Joliffe’s and Fynn Marine, and Spencer Rigging for all of your rigging needs. Oh and if you require some refreshment after all that shopping, Wine Therapy have just the thing. You can even top up a ‘wine card’ and have a tasting session of the wines they are promoting.

WORLD TRAVEL MARKET SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT

MORNING – WEST COWES

AFTERNOON – EAST COWES

S

tart the day with a few hours on the water. Cowes has been the place to sail since the 1800s and you can spot the sailors a mile away. They have their own uniform - red trousers ahoy! - and even their own language, so if you hear someone talking about ‘feeding the fishes’ you’ll know they’ve just been sick overboard. There are plenty of opportunities for all abilities, so book in advance and go yachting, take up powerboating or just mess about in a dinghy. UKSA offer a range of courses. If you’re more of an armchair sailor, then grab a take-out cappuccino from the new French Franks near the Red Jet terminal, and head for Princes’ Green to watch the yachts scooting up and down. Alternatively, you can join a boat trip from the Harbour and go on an adrenaline-fuelled rib ride to see the world-famous Needles on the West of the Island. As well as boats, Cowes is known for its red squirrel population, and there are signs warning motorists about their crossing points on the roads. You can often see them frolicking around in Northwood Park, just a few minutes up the hill from the Parade. Take a peek at Northwood House, built in 1799 for merchant George Ward and his family – it’s where the Isle of Wight Literary Festival is now held and it’s a favourite spot for weddings. In the Victorian times, the mansion was famous for its high society soirees. A 200 metre tunnel runs under the house coming out at the park’s entrance on Baring Road. One theory is that this allowed members of the royal family to secretly attend the wild parties without being spotted.

I

t’s just a short hop on a chain ferry across to East Cowes. The much-loved ‘floating bridge’ has been taking people across the River Medina since 1859 and operates every day of the year. The best way to explore East Cowes is on foot. We recommend the 4 mile ‘boat trail’ that stops off at heritage hotspots along the way. You can see where the first sea plane was launched in 1913 and where the world’s first hovercraft was developed. Pop into the Classic Boat Museum while you’re here. In the early evening, as the sun goes down, walk along the seafront and watch the cruise liners leave Southampton Water. You’ll also likely to see a number of giant container ships. This is where the 180m long Hoegh Osaka famously got stuck in 2015. Get the chain ferry back to West Cowes and settle down with a local ale in a cosy inn. Many of the pubs are former smugglers’ haunts, including the Union Inn, which has a series of tunnels and secret chambers beneath it. For dinner, grab fish and chips from Corries Cabin and eat it the proper way - out of the wrapping. Tuck into their award-winning food as you sit on the harbour and wait for your Red Jet home. Bon voyage!

12 ITINERARY IDEAS

Cowes weekender

Cowes is a place where you can escape from the world on a remote walk along a deserted stretch of the coast. Or grab a piece of the action and shop, eat out, sail, and go to the theatre, enjoying the many entertainments that bring tourists back to this cosmopolitan resort, year after year. Any trip to Cowes should include a visit to Osborne, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s palace by the sea. You’ll be seeing more of this attraction at a cinema near you from 2017, when Victoria & Abdul comes out. Filmed on the Island, and starring Judi Dench, it’s about the Queen’s ‘close’ friendship with an Indian servant… and bound to cause a right royal stir.

Tour Victoria & Albert’s seaside palace with a group. Osborne offers coach parking, group rates, pre-bookable guided tours of the house and garden, and group dining options. You could even hire a marquee on the lawn. www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/osborne/

WORLD TRAVEL MARKET SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT

SUNDAY – VISIT THE QUEEN

A

fter a slap-up breakfast, it’s time to explore East Cowes. If you’re based in West Cowes, then catch the historic chain ferry, known as the floating bridge, and cross the River Medina. It only take a few minutes and saves you an 11 mile journey via Newport.

SATURDAY – GET BACK TO NATURE

S

tart the day with a scenic stroll or cycle. If you’ve got the legs for a 9 mile round trip, then follow the Medina Estuary Circular Walk. This is a scenic route that takes you out of Cowes and along the disused railway line that runs along the River Medina. It leads you into Newport, which is sometimes referred to as our ‘capital’ town. Keep your eyes peeled for the famous red squirrels, as well as wading birds, waterfowl, and rare plants growing in the saltmarshes. The ecology is so rich and diverse that conservationists have spotted over 40 different types of marine worm here! The furthest point on your route is the Bargeman’s Rest, where you can cross the river and then head back into Cowes… Or carry on walking for a couple of minutes, and you’ll arrive at Quay Arts, which is a cultural hub with a decent café. If you carry on a bit further, you’ll discover Newport’s shops and restaurants – and then you can get a bus back to Cowes from the bus station. Alternatively, go on a 2 mile stretch from Cowes to Gurnard. This flat route starts at the Cowes RNLI lifeboat station (where the board outside will inform you about any recent call-outs). Go past the Royal Yacht Squadron, one of the most prestigious yacht clubs in the world. The Squadron was the first club in the UK to organise yacht races and members have included Queen Victoria and George IV. It’s so exclusive that Earl Mountbatten was unable to get membership, and so used to watch the yachting from a nearby jewellers’ instead. Carry on past the row of shiny starting cannons, and you’ll reach Princes’ Green, which is a great vantage point for eating an ice cream and watching the boats go by. Carry on walking along the front until you reach the racing green beach huts at Gurnard. You’ll find a café and pub waiting for you. The Watersedge Café serves up an excellent cream tea. Head back into West Cowes where restaurants include Mojac’s (a local favourite since 2000), The Mess-Canteen+Bar (known for their jam jar cocktails) and The Coast Bar and Dining Room (for great pizza).

East Cowes is a fascinating area for anyone who’s interested in maritime history, or just likes seeing lots of boats. Grab a takeout coffee and watch the ferries, sailing boats and cargo ships coming and going. You can see the cruise liners in the early evening. Then get the bus or walk up to Osborne, Victoria and Albert’s seaside retreat. You could spend the whole day at Osborne but if you’re on a tight schedule, allocate at least three hours. The house is spectacular and gives you a real insight into how the royal family lived. You can see the nursery designed by Albert, the newly refurbished Durbar Room, Her Majesty’s bath and even the bed where she died. The Italianate gardens lead down to a private beach where you can see the Queen’s bathing machine and enjoy traditional entertainments in the summer. If you’re exploring with your family, then don’t miss the Swiss Cottage where the mini Royals used to play at being grownups and host dinner parties for their parents. There are interactive activities, including a trail to find the royal Chihuahua, and a great play area. Pop into the little museum of curios - tucked away at the back is a very odd five legged deer. After Osborne, continue on to St Mildred’s Chuch in Whippingham, where you can see the Royal pew where Queen Victoria used to sit. The extravagant looking church was partly designed by Prince Albert, and their youngest daughter Princess Beatrice was married - and buried - here. The tea-room serves excellent cakes. If you’re in need of something stronger than a slice of Victoria Sponge, then take the public footpath next to the church wall and walk over the fields to the Folly Inn in Whippingham. Perched on the banks of the River Medina, this 18th century pub is a hit with the boating crowd who go to dance the night away on the tables (it’s something of a tradition here!). After you’ve been suitably refreshed, take a water taxi back to Cowes (you’ll need to book in advance). Explore the Marina Estuary Walk: cowesharbourcommission.co.uk/walks_and_cycle_routes Walk to Gurnard: cowes.co.uk/Walks-from-Cowes.aspx Enjoy a cream tea with sea views: watersedgebeachcafe.co.uk Explore the boat trail: www.iwight.com/azservices/documents/1376-CowesBoatTrailLeaflet.pdf Visit Queen Victoria’s church: whippinghameastcowes.org.uk/st-mildreds-churchwhippingham/ Take a water taxi home: cowesharbourcommission.co.uk/water_taxis

DON’T MISS • For something a bit different, see what’s on at the Trinity Theatre in Cowes – the eclectic programme includes musicals, theatre and bands. caods.org.uk • Get the bus to Newtown and explore the old Roman salt marshes which are now an amazing

place for bird watching. 18 PAVILION COTTAGE – Open: 1st January 2016 - 16th October 2016 & 7th April 2017 - 31st December 2017: You don’t have to be a cricket fan to enjoy Pavilion Cottage at Osborne - but it will do no harm if you are. Built in the early 1900s for sporty cadets at the Royal Naval College, it later became a store room, before livestock were allowed to take over the wicket. Game over! Today, the long, south-facing verandah is the perfect place to sit and agree with Queen Victoria, who said: ‘It is impossible to imagine a prettier spot’. She would be impressed by the interiors, as elegant as an Alastair Cook cover drive. Queen Victoria made Osborne House her country get-away for 50 years before her death in 1901. It remains an extraordinary legacy to the longreigning monarch and an intimate insight to her character. The Durbar Room, built in the 1890s in recognition of her title as Empress of India (though she never set foot in India) is a tour de force. Queen Victoria was always reluctant to leave Osborne House - a feeling shared by anyone holidaying at Pavilion Cottage. Guests can explore Queen Victoria’s private beach, “We have quite a charming beach to ourselves,” Victoria wrote in 1845 and it was here that the Queen regularly bathed and where her children learned to swim. Pavilion Cottage guests can use the beach at all times and usually enjoy exclusive access outside normal opening times.
