ISLE OF WIGHT WALKING FESTIVAL L AUNCH WEEKEND New Carnival Company Launch Weekend The Carnival Trail: 100 miles in 5 days. Saturday 3 May to Wednesday 7 May inclusive. Where walking meets art and carnival ! Be part of a NEW long distance walk for the Island which links all our carnival towns and villages together in a single 100 mile route. This trail celebrates the Isle of Wight as the birthplace of the English carnival tradition, and promotes the 19 summer carnivals and 6 winter parades which take place on the Island every year. For many carnival towns 2014 also marks the 125 Anniversary of their first parades! Devised by The New Carnival Company with walk leaders Ali Pretty (outdoor artist) and Richard White (digital artist), each leg of the five day walk will link iconic places and scenic landscapes in a celebration of our rich carnival heritage. The carnival theme will animate the walk – with local schoolchildren bearing processional flags coming to meet and greet walkers as they approach each town. A specially commissioned digital soundscape, accessed via your smartphone or tablet, will accompany the Trail to enrich your carnival experience!

Launch Event Saturday 3 May 11.00 – 3.00 pm Pop to St. Thomas’ Square in Newport as Festival organisers extend a warm welcome to all walkers, residents and visitors, giving you the chance to meet some of the Leaders and Sponsors. Whether you like to set off on major hikes or just get out and about for some fresh air with the family, a Garmin can enhance your experience – come along and find out how! Regatta our Clothing Sponsor will also be in the Square promoting their newest technology garments and you will have the chance to speak to the experts from Regatta – “built for great British walking and to keep you warm, dry and comfortable on your adventures”.

Congratulations Helen Butler!!! Helen Butler, the president of the Red Squirrel Trust, has been awarded an MBE for her work during 20 years helping to conserve the animals on the Isle of Wight. She set up the Wight Squirrel Project in 1993 after she became involved in a survey of local wildlife which found that the number of red squirrels had declined following a hurricane which had hit their habitat. This charity is primarily concerned with monitoring red squirrel numbers and protecting the habitat, particularly by ensuring the Island remains a grey squirrel-free zone. Helen set up the Red Squirrel Trust in 2005 aiming to educate and raise awareness and provide talks and guided walks. Helen from Binstead, said: “After the hurricane there weren’tt many red squirrels left so I set up the Wight Squirrel Project and it steamrolled and got bigger and bigger. I’ve learnt lots of skills since”. Helen is also a popular walk leader for our Walking Festival. (Photo: Isle of Wight County Press))

Isle of Wight AONB The special qualities of the Isle of Wight AONB are many, contrasting, varied and inspiring. They contribute greatly to the quality of life and well-being of local communities and visitors. From majestic sea cliffs and sweeping beaches to the quiet solitude of ancient woodland; the ever changing patchwork of worked fields to the timeless and enduring presence of the downs; the intricate inlets of tranquil creeks to the long distance views from coastal heath and downland; the planned and manicured gardens of former Royal Estates and Victorian villas to the irregular undulating hedged fields of pasture; the dark starlit skies to the bustle and colour of festivals and events; the winding paths, shutes and hollow ways in the countryside to chines and steps down cliffs to the beach; place names and dialect to poetry, literature and art; isolated houses, hamlets and rural villages to harbour towns, castles and tumuli; plants and animals to fossilised trees and dinosaur footprints. How many steps do you take in a day? Maybe you’ve heard about the recent guidelines to take 10,000 steps a day? How far is this anyway? The average person’s stride length is approximately 2.5 feet so it takes just over 2,000 steps to walk a mile. If you take 10,000 steps, you’ve walked nearly five miles! A sedentary person may only average 1,000 to 3,000 steps a day. For these people, adding 500 steps a day until you reach 10,000 is a reasonable goal. Wearing a pedometer is an easy way to keep track of your steps each day.

Isle of Wight Ramblers ‘Donate a Gate’ Scheme Are you looking for a novel and inspiring way to: • Mark the life and passing of a loved one • Remember a loyal family pet • Commemorate a special event • Promote your organisation For lovers of walking and the countryside a commemorative footpath gate is an opportunity to set up a memorial that will provide practical ease of access to fellow walkers for years to come. The Isle of Wight Ramblers and the IOW Council ‘Rights of Way’ department supported by our local National Trust have established the footpath ‘Donate a Gate’ Scheme. An individual donation of £460 will finance a new footpath gate incorporating a locally engraved commemorative oak plaque at a suitable location on the Island. In particular by identifying suitable stretches of footpath to be wholly converted to gates, we are improving access to the countryside for those people who cannot easily negotiate stiles. Contact the scheme organiser to find out where current projects are underway. Challenge and Adventure “…challenging young people” Challenge & Adventure work with disadvantaged and challenging young people on the Isle of Wight, using adventurous outdoor activities and tailored support to build their confidence, raise their self-esteem and help them to re-engage at school, at home and in the community. They work with a range of people including those with behavioural issues, those at risk of being excluded and those from areas of disadvantage. Challenge and Adventure rely on grants, donations, and the generosity of volunteers to ensure the work continues. They are based in Parkhurst Forest, and run a range of different programmes for young people ranging from 12 – 19 years of age. As well as the programs, young people are encouraged to accredit their efforts through the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. Resources and facilities enable Challenge and Adventure to run bespoke courses for all ages in areas such as bush craft / forest schools, team building and behavioural support – this could include residential experiences.
