The living is easy here, and it won’t be long before you feel relaxed. The Island’s unique maritime landscape helps, of course. You are never far from the sight and sound of the sea, and our coastal paths and the fresh sea air are the perfect accompaniment to your holiday. It is the same pure clean air that has won over some very famous visitors over the years including Lord Tennyson, and Charles Dickens.

The Isle of Wight is only 27 miles long at its widest point, so it is little wonder that many visitors choose to explore on foot or bicycle, stopping off to enjoy the many amazing views - including perhaps a sighting of our native red squirrel, and to sample a delicious pub lunch. The fact is, you can walk or cycle for miles without seeing a car, and with over half the island designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the scenery never runs out! Perhaps that is why Lonely Planet voted the Island as one of the world’s top cycling destinations.

Or you might prefer to buy a Rover ticket, which allows you unlimited bus travel during your stay. It is a great way to get around, and of course, someone else does the driving... There are also a number of health clubs and spas, including some within the bigger accommodation providers, which are designed to make it easier for you to relax and feel good. Quality is equally as important for us as it is for you and therefore most accommodation featured in this guide has been quality graded by either Visit England or the AA. These quality ratings indicate the overall accommodation standard, cleanliness, ambiance, hospitality, service and quality of food. Generally the higher the star rating the higher the quality. Star Ratings are also accompanied by a category which describes the assessment criteria and includes Hotels, B&B’s, Self Catering, Hostels and Holiday Parks.

This scheme is a local annual inspection scheme accredited by Visit England. Assessments are carried out by independent assessors at Quality in Tourism (QIT), according to criteria agreed by Visit England. The Scheme has been developed to raise the overall minimum quality standards of accommodation for visitors to the Isle of Wight. Look out for this logo for establishments that have participated in this scheme.

Both work to National Quality Assurance standards and use independent assessors.

The traditional seaside resort of Shanklin is famous for its beautiful sandy beach and its gardens, but there is far more to it than that.

Shanklin offers a tried and tested combination of relaxation and activity, and it is a very popular resort for families. And for good reason.

Sandown is one of the few seaside resorts to still have a Victorian pier, but there is much more to the area than this.

If you want to offset some of this good living with a bit of healthy exercise, you could get some advice at the water sports centre at Lake, or perhaps try windsurfing and sailing at Yaverland.

Lake beach is safe and sandy, and a peaceful respite from the hustle and bustle of the larger resorts. It is reached from the Cliff Path by a sloping footpath, or, also on foot, along the revetment, from Sandown or Shanklin. The path offers an easy stroll between Sandown and Shanklin, and the Lake cliffs are home to kestrels, fulmar petrels, swifts and cormorants.

Sandown has excellent bus, train and road train services. The “Vectis Road Train” links the pier and town centre with the attractions at Dinosaur Isle and the IW Zoo, whilst the “Sandown Bay Tour”, links the two resorts of Sandown and Shanklin.

With one of the highest concentrations of dinosaur fossils anywhere in the world, the Isle of Wight has been dubbed ‘Dinosaur Island’. The area around Sandown Bay is a fun place for fossil hunting, so with a keen eye you could be leaving with a very special, very old souvenir.

Ventnor is full of character and its unique position on the hillside which slopes down to the sea has helped the town to enjoy a particularly warm climate. Its sheltered beach is great for sunbathing and swimming, and with pubs and cafes along the newly updated esplanade, refreshments are never far away.

Enjoy the spectacular scenery from the top deck of one of the regular buses that serves the town. Catch a bus northwards to Shanklin, Sandown & Ryde, or travel across the Island to Godshill, Newport or Cowes.

Ventnor town centre features a good choice of antique and bric a brac shops, too, which are perfect for relaxed browsing. Then you might want to stretch your legs with a refreshing walk along the sea wall walkway to the picturesque and historic village of Bonchurch, which has a lovely village pond, places to eat and drink, and a tiny church full of character and history.

One of Ventnor’s other major attractions is the Botanic Garden, a 22-acre sub-tropical paradise. You can walk there from Ventnor along the coast, taking one of the island’s hidden gems, Steephill Cove, or walk along the high cliffs of St Lawrence overlooking woodland and an exposed rocky beach. All around Ventnor you’ll find beautiful walks with dramatic viewpoints.

We reside within 14 acres of tranquil unspoilt countryside, a perfect retreat for all the family, yet we are only a few minutes by car to the glorious beaches of Shanklin, Sandown & Ventnor. The old walled orchard still maintains its oldeworlde charm, as it is traffic-free, making it completely safe for children, it contains our 40 static caravans 4-6 berth, gas and electricity is included in the price, linen is not supplied, but available to hire. Also two 3 bedroom centrally heated apartments, and the 2 bedroom Orchard Lodge which are all self-contained. (Dogs are permitted in certain units). Our Touring, Motorhome and Tenting amenities, are situated within sheltered grassland, with upland views of Stenbury Downs. All pitches have electric hook-ups and this area is split into three sections. The

‘Main Field’ and tranquil ‘Meadow’ area where a selection of grass, hardstanding or Fully Serviced pitches are available. A stream meanders alongside the Meadow, also a tranquil area for relaxing, picnicking, nature watching and recreational activities. The toilet block is built to a high specification, with modern washing facilities; complete with free showers, hand & hair dryers and a separate washing up area. The access friendly room is situated within the same complex. The park is rich in wildlife and has won the prestigious David Bellamy Gold Award. Excellent amenities, wonderful wildlife, an ideal spot for bird watchers, horse riding or golfing, a superb base for walkers or cyclists, as you can access walkways within minutes. The outdoor heated pool with combined Toddlers pool, is open Whitsun to mid September, and is overlooked by the bar and lounge area. Nightly entertainment is offered during Whitsun week and during the peak summer season. The nearest Bus stop is 150 yards from the site.

Ryde’s golden sandy beach - several miles of it - is great for swimming and beach games, and the town itself is packed with pubs, restaurants and shops. The Esplanade has a marina, gardens and activities for all the family, such as a bowling green, children’s amusement park, ice rink, tenpin bowling, nightclub, boating lake, swimming pool with retractable roof. Stroll along the sea wall to Puckpool Park, with café, tennis and children’s play park.

Head East along the coast and discover some wonderful coastal villages – and tempting stops for food and drink. Walk to Seaview, a charming and characterful village, which becomes a busy sailing centre in the summer. Then visit Bembridge, another good area for sailing with a delightful harbour, a pleasant beach with rock pools, and a village centre with shops and places to dine. Buses to all parts of the Island depart from Ryde Esplanade. Alternatively catch the train to Shanklin via Smallbrook (IW Steam Railway), Brading, Sandown and Lake.

The West Wight is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, not only a haven for nature lovers, birdwatchers and walkers, but a must see for all visitors to the Island.

Take time to explore Totland Bay with its pretty beach and short esplanade – and its own smaller pier which is scheduled for improvement, and for bird watching visit Newtown’s Nature Reserve. West Wight is linked by good bus services from Newport. The “Needles Tour” links Yarmouth with Freshwater Bay, Alum Bay and the spectacular climb along a private cliff-top road to the Needles Battery.

Whether you’re stepping off the ferry or berthing your yacht, Yarmouth has some excellent shops, and several superb restaurants and pubs. The first Island settlement to be granted a royal town charter, in 1135, Yarmouth was sacked by the French in 1377 and 1524, and was raided several times until Henry VIII improved security by building a stone castle, which was completed in 1547. The castle is now managed by English Heritage.

Another impressive feature of the town is the unique 700ft long timber pier dating from 1876, now a Grade II listed building. More than 500 deck planks record the names of those who helped fund the pier’s restoration.

Freshwater Bay is a good starting point for the Tennyson Trail – a dramatic walk along towering cliff-tops, and a coastal path like no other. And keep your eyes peeled for fossils – Compton Bay’s long sandy beach is not only a popular spot for surfing and swimming, but for its fascinating dinosaur walks and world famous dinosaur fossil finds.
