It’s tough to pick a “most changed” spot downtown, but The Landing would certainly be in the running. This short stretch of bricked road offers shopping and drinks alongside numerous dining options, all while being easily walkable to other downtown neighborhoods.

EAT Check out all of the al fresco dining options. Be sure to hit Mercado (four types of margaritas!) and share a charcuterie board from Marquee.

LEARN Fort Wayne’s history can be traced back to The Landing, so named because it was the high point on the Wabash and Erie Canal. Soak in the historic architecture and character of Fort Wayne’s original main street.

REST Rest easy at The Bradley, an anchor of this neighborhood and a signature hotel with modern design sensibilities and dining options.

DO Bring the family and enjoy the fully accessible playground and refreshing water features at the Kids’ Canal!

EW

SEE Our favorite view of the city can be found atop the Treetop Canopy Trail, alongside the St. Marys River at Promenade Park.

Adventures for ALL

Await in Fort Wayne!

Fun comes in all shapes and sizes in Fort Wayne, and all abilities are invited to experience Fort Wayne to the fullest. As a major adaptive sports competition site, Fort Wayne is continually growing a destination where everyone can find adventure.

EXPERIENCES Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo – A KultureCity Certified Sensory Inclusive Venue, the zoo offers paved pathways, exhibits at wheelchair level, designated quiet areas, and KultureCity Sensory Kits. The Z.O.&O. railroad ride also accommodates wheelchairs! Murals – Take in Fort Wayne’s public art! 11 downtown murals are outfitted with 3D, tactile plaques so the pieces can be enjoyed by touch. The plaques also offer QR codes, linking to audio files of the artists describing their work. Science Central – Explore hands-on, accessible exhibits, or catch a live science experiment in the wheelchair-friendly Demonstration Theater. Free Disability Days offer additional modifications and programming for guests with sensory needs and intellectual or physical disabilities. Promenade Park – Also KultureCity Certified, this downtown riverfront park offers a roll-in splash pad, wheelchair-friendly turf, a paved, tactile ribbon throughout the park – provided for visual navigation assistance, and an accessible kayak launch! Visitors in wheelchairs can also board the Sweet Breeze canal boat for a river tour. Sensory kits are also available at the Arts United Center, Grand Wayne Convention Center, and Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. The kits are equipped with noise reducing headphones, small fidget items, a communication deck, identification wristband, a weighted comfort item, and sanitizing wipes. 8 | | VisitFortWayne 28 24 VisitFortWayne | | 2023 2022

Taylor’s Dream – Indiana’s first Boundless Playground – an inclusive playground for children of all abilities. Play in the splash pad, take a turn on the Aero Glider (a multi-use rocker that can accommodate two wheelchairs), and discover additional multi-sensory experiences. Botanical Conservatory – Relax in the serene environment of three lush, accessible indoor gardens! Note: Woody the Talking Tree can be triggering for individuals with sensory sensitivities. The staff are happy to take you a different route to the gardens! Parkview Field – Take in a TinCaps baseball game at Parkview Field, with ramps and elevators into the ballpark, accessible stadium seating near outlets to plug in electric wheelchairs, sensory kits, and staff to assist blind or low vision guests. Fort Wayne Museum of Art – Wander through the wheelchair-accessible galleries with zero-threshold passages, and additional audio files available via QR code for each exhibition. Performing Arts – Enjoy the arts with a sensory-friendly performance from the Civic Theatre and Fort Wayne Ballet. Or attend a show at the wheelchair accessible Embassy Theatre, where guests can check out sensory kits, and those with hearing impairments can request assistive listening devices or interpreters. (Note – interpreters require 48 hours advance notice.)

Vine’s Picks

1. Feeding the giraffes and riding the Z.O.&O. Railroad ride at the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo. 2. Any exhibit involving bones or digging at Science Central! Sometimes I even bring along an interesting rock and the staff helps me identify it. 3. Playing the arcade games and sliding down the two-story slide at Sweetwater. 4. Taylor’s Dream! I can get out of my wheelchair and move around, and it has options for kids who can’t get out of their chairs. I also love the splash pad! 5. Visiting Turnstone and watching the USA Paralympic Goalball teams practice. 6. Exploring the Saturday morning farmers markets! There’s always kid-friendly stuff to do, and both the YLNI Farmers Market and Ft. Wayne’s Farmers Market are fully wheelchair accessible. 7. Packing a picnic to enjoy at Promenade Park. The splash pad is so fun, and I love rolling my wheelchair across the Wells Street Bridge and exploring down by the water. 8. Seeing the waterfall and the giant plants at the Botanical Conservatory. 9. Enjoying a meal on the outdoor patio at my favorite restaurant – the Hoppy Gnome!

Vine was born with a rare medical condition called OEIS Complex, and Spina Bifida is part of the condition. 9-year-old Vine is a fulltime wheelchair user and loves to get out and be active! He does everything other kids do, but in his own way. His best friend is his cousin Kamy, who was born with childhood apraxia of speech. They have a YouTube channel, youtube.com/@KVTVShow, where they show everyone how they do things just a little differently...and being different is okay!

Connecting with The many large-scale, professional murals you see throughout downtown Fort Wayne are here thanks to Art This Way – an initiative of the Fort Wayne Downtown Improvement District that is focused on bringing these artistic visions to life.

Matthew Plett – Breathe Mural

Lyndy Bazile – Pontiac Street Mural

Mural Address: 112 West Wayne Street

The mural is separated into nine brightly colored panels with alternating chaotic and calming patterns. Each calming panel has the word Breathe written in script as a way to bring the viewer back to the focus on breath before moving on to the next wild patterned panel representing life and all its beautiful mess.” — Matthew Plett is a graphic artist, muralist, letterer, and illustrator

@datmattmatt | cargocollective.com/matthewplett

Mural Address: 123 West Main Street

The Pontiac mural on Main Street is a colorful portrayal of the Black Expo, a historical Fort Wayne event. The Black Expo took place on Pontiac Street several decades ago. It was an annual event, and a cultural celebration for Black people in Fort Wayne. I hope this mural serves current residents as an inspiration to come together to celebrate our cultures and to unify our voice so that we can be more powerful and not become displaced and not lose the connection to ourselves and to our cultures and to our history.”

— Lyndy Bazile, creator of AfroPlump, is a painter and muralist @afroplump | afroplump.com

Raul Perez – No One Does it Alone

Arlin Graff – River Otter

Mural Address: 222 Pearl Street

I grew up in a house torn by domestic violence, and to have The Center for Non-Violence sponsor this mural just means so much to me. The mural depicts two people holding hands – two strangers. On one forearm, it says, ‘No one does it.’ And on the other it says, ‘Alone in this world.’ It’s just a reminder that we have to invest in people and that it’s good for everyone to want to help one another.” — Raul Perez is a graphic designer and muralist

@justshootmeraul

Mural Address: 919 South Harrison Street I believe art energizes people, so that’s the reason for bringing all of this color to the animal. Basically, I use a lot of random geometric shapes and put them together to create figures. I like to work with high contrast colors and paint drop shadows to make the art pop out of the wall.”

— Arlin Graff is an international artist from Brazil, known for his unique style of “deconstructionism,” portrayed in his abstract depictions of nature and animals @arlin_graff | arlingraff.com Insider Tip: Arlin always hides two elements in all his murals – a heart for his wife and a feather for his son. Try to spot them!
