HOTELS The name “Paralimni” means “by the lake” since it is situated next to a lake (that dries up during the summer). It has been the administrative centre of Ammochostos (Famagusta) district since the Turkish invasion in 1974, when it became the temporary administrative, economic and cultural centre. It is also the district’s main shopping hub offering a big selection of shops. Protaras, the seaside resort of Paralimni, has been developed as a tourist resort in the last 20 years. It is well-known for its golden sandy beaches, safe and crystal clear waters, water sports activities and the hundreds of windmills in the sprawling fields. Some of the best beaches are Fig Tree Bay, Konnos Bay and Pernera Beach. Worth seeing are the many Byzantine and medieval churches in the wider Paralimni area and in surrounding villages.
