2012 is going to be a fantastic year! Amongst other things Coventry Cathedral celebrates its Golden Jubilee – a landmark occasion for a landmark building, recognising 50 years since the opening of the new Cathedral in 1962.

GOLDEN JUBILEE

WITH US

The ruined shell of the 14th century Cathedral remains, speaking powerfully of the need to reach out in friendship Coventry Cathedral is also a place of beauty and creativity, housing one of Britain’s best rather than war. During 2012, the eyes of the world will focus on Britain. Never collections of 20th century art. During 2012, and true to our tradition over the last 50 has Coventry Cathedral’s message been so relevant. As a world centre for years, we are planning a cultural programme of art, music, theatre, poetry and worship that reconciliation, and with Coventry’s mission as a city of peace and reconciliation, the will inspire everyone. Cathedral closely connects with the core Olympic values: the celebration of sport in This will include – amongst others – a newly sharing understanding between nations. commissioned piece by James MacMillan, involving local children, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) and top soloist, Ian Bostridge; musical events featuring top artists and performers; key multicultural events; theatrical performances and exhibitions; a week-long Flower Festival in partnership with the National Association of Flower Arranging Societies, which will see the launch of a new rose named Coventry Cathedral. We will share in the Olympic celebrations and Godiva will sleep in the Cathedral ruins before setting off for London! Further programme announcements will be made throughout the year. Coventry & Warwickshire COVENTRY FUTURE

London 2012 is coming to Coventry... Be part of our Moment to Shine Coventry is set to take its place on the world stage as a host for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. In 2012, the eyes of the world will be watching as Coventry becomes the first English city to stage Olympic action on the 25 July, two days before the opening ceremony in London. London 2012 provides our region with the chance to showcase our city to the world, celebrating our vast sporting and cultural heritage and promoting our world-class, iconic tourism attractions. As well as hosting 12 games of Olympic football, welcoming the Olympic Torch Relay to the city, showcasing events on our new, interactive big screen in the city centre, the local community will also be taking part through staging their own 2012 inspired Community Games, generating huge pride in Coventry and this once in a life time opportunity. To kick start the ongoing regeneration of the city centre, 2012 will also see a multimillion pound revamp of the historic heart of the city with Broadgate, the central setting for our historic Lady Godiva statue, and other key central areas improved. Part funded by the European Regional Development Fund, this will not only create a wonderful city for when the eyes of the world are focussed on Coventry, but leave a lasting legacy for its people. Next year will also see our wonderful Cathedral celebrate its Golden Jubilee, a landmark year recognising 50 years of

50

visitcoventryandwarwickshire.co.uk

service to the city of Coventry. As part of the Cultural Olympiad, the Golden Jubilee will be a celebration of the cathedral as a centre of cultural and creative excellence for Coventry and the nation, with a dynamic artistic programme of events. There will also be exhibitions on the extraordinary art and artists that created this modern architectural masterpiece, on 20th century cathedrals in Great Britain and on the role of Peace and Reconciliation in the Olympics which is very apt given Coventry’s worldwide reputation as such a city. The Cathedral will be one of many venues, organisations and communities within the Coventry, and wider Warwickshire area, who will be showcasing their talent and venues to visitors not only during 2012 but beyond to encourage people to revisit the region in future years as well. In July 2012, one such project, Godiva Awakes, a 21st century Lady Godiva will awake to a spectacular performance involving dancers, actors, aerialists, musicians, pyrotechnicians, carnivalists and 220 young people in a procession marking the unveiling of this Godiva for the modern age. Powered by 50 cyclists, Godiva will then journey to London to celebrate the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. 2012 provides a wonderful opportunity to build on the unique qualities of Coventry people, their warmth, friendliness, sense of community and a passion for sport, so visitors receive the best possible experience when coming to the city.

We look forward to welcoming you to Coventry during 2012 and beyond and you’ll see that being ‘Sent to Coventry’ is a rewarding experience. To keep up-to-date on how Coventry is engaging and involved in London 2012 please visit : www.coventry.gov.uk/london2012 visitcoventryandwarwickshire.co.uk

Coventry & Warwickshire

Coventry Coventry Cathedral was opened to the public in May 1962 and it celebrates its 50th Anniversary in May 2012. Considered the most iconic building of the 20th century, it’s the third cathedral for the city. It has so much to offer the visitor, including work by Jacob Epstein, John Piper, John Hutton and Graham Sutherland. The first Coventry Cathedral existed from the 1100s to 1539, being destroyed under the dissolution of the monastries, being attached to a Benedictine Priory. Both are visible today, with a Visitors Centre to explain the site. It was featured on the Time Team programme. Holy Trinity is one of the largest medieval churches in England. With a spire of 72 metres (237 feet) and length of 59 metres (194 feet) it is almost cathedral size. It has changed greatly through its 900 year history: practically destroyed by fire in 1257, it was rebuilt. Things to see include the 1430s Doom painting and the links to the writer George Eliot. Coventry Transport Museum is located in the birthplace of Britain’s car and cycle industry.

The city had over 300 cycle makers, 120 motorcycle makers and 130 car and commercial vehicle builders, coach makers and component manufacturers. It houses the most extensive collection of British-made road transport in the world. The collection has more than 240 cars and commercial vehicles, 100 motorcycles and 200 bicycles. The most notable exhibits in the museum are Thrust 2 and Thrust SSC, the British jet cars which broke the land speed record in 1983 and 1997 respectively. St. Mary’s Guildhall is considered to be one of the finest surviving medieval guildhalls in England. First built in the 1340s for the merchant guild of St. Mary, it was enlarged between 1394 and 1414 and extensively embellished at the end of the 15th century. It was a temporary prison to Mary, Queen of Scots. William Shakespeare is thought to have staged his plays here and the writer George Eliot, who knew the hall well, features it in a scene from one of her novels. It also contains a rare tapestry dating from the 1490s, depicting Henry VI who stayed in the city many times and held a parliament in Coventry.

Stratford-upon-Avon The Royal Shakespeare Theatre has recently been refurbished for the sum of £112.8 million. Holy Trinity Church, where William Shakespeare is buried and where he was christened, celebrated its 800th birthday in 2010.

later marrying him when she was 26 and he was only 18, due to her getting pregnant. Also Mary Arden’s House, where his mother grew up. All five houses are owned by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust.

FASCINATING FACTS

Fascinating Facts

The Birthplace is where William Shakespeare was born in 1564, we believe on the 23rd April, the same day he died in 1616 at the grand old age of 52. Not far away is Halls Croft where his daughter lived with Doctor John Hall. Also close is Nash’s House, where his grandaughter lived. Out of the town are Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, where his future wife grew up,

Warwick Warwick Castle is one of the great castles of England, involved with all the conflicts of English history including the War of the Roses and the English Civil War. With Danish invaders threatening, Ethelfleda, daughter of Alfred the Great, orders the building of a ‘burh’ or an earthen rampart to protect the small hill top settlement of Warwick. After the Norman conquest, William the Conqueror establishes a motte and bailey fort, consisting of a large earth mound with a timber stockade around both the top and base. By the 1200s wood is replaced by stone and the castle is gradually expanded. Richard Neville, the then Earl of Warwick, during the War of the Roses, helps to depose both Henry VI and Edward IV, winning himself the title Kingmaker. In November 1978, Warwick Castle was sold to The Tussaud’s Group and later Merlin.

Lord Leycester Hospital is part of an historic group of timberframed buildings dating mainly from the late 14th century clustered round the Norman gateway into Warwick with its 12th century Chantry Chapel above it. Hidden behind the ancient buildings is the tiny but delightful Master’s Garden. For nearly 200 years it was the home of Warwick’s medieval guilds. In the reign of Queen Elizabeth I it became a place of retirement for old warriors and their wives, thanks to Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester St Mary’s Church – Although mostly destroyed by fire, the Beauchamp (Bee Chum) Chapel was saved and is where The Earl of Leycester (Robert Dudley) and his wife Lettice is buried and dates to the 15th century.
