W

ith 554 lakes, Central Florida’s Polk County is a water-sports paradise. Year-round warm, sunshine-filled days provide abundant opportunities for boating, nature cruises and water-skiing.

Airboating or swamp buggy rides, anyone?

Boating, cruising and water-skiing

Explore our watery wilderness on an airboat ride, and you’ll experience a Florida that few ever see. The fast, powerful boats at Alligator Cove, Camp Mack, Captain Fred’s, Grape Hammock, Mild to Wild or Westgate River Ranch can take you into shallow areas not accessible by any other means. You’ll see the REAL Florida, up close and personal. Westgate River Ranch also offers swamp buggy rides for another option for the close-up nature encounter.

Public boat ramps and boat rental outfitters make it easy to get on the water. Rent a boat and explore our waterways, or hop aboard a nature cruise and let the captain do the work. Memory Makin’ Guides offers pontoon tours of the Winter Haven Chain of Lakes, Lake Kissimmee and the Kissimmee River chain. You can relax on a sunset cruise of Lake Pierce at the Florida Leadership Training Center. If you like to enjoy the water in a kayak,

T

he “Largemouth Bass Capital of the World” welcomes you!

Our more than 550 freshwater lakes, scenic rivers and man-made water features are home to bass, crappie, catfish, bluegill, redear sunfish and sunshine bass. From the 16 canalconnected Winter Haven “Chain of Lakes” to the 34,948-acre Lake Kissimmee, to a canoe trip down the beautiful Peace River, the fishing is abundant here in Central Florida’s Polk County. Lakes Mattie and Juliana, located north of Auburndale, abound with largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish and sunshine bass. Lake Kissimmee, known throughout the south for its bass, also produces large catches of black crappies. Connected to the northwest end of Lake Kissimmee by a canal, the 6,000acre Lake Hatchineha produces good catches of largemouth bass and bluegill. Its cypress-rimmed shoreline provides nesting areas for numerous ospreys, anhingas and other wildlife. Five thousand acres of deep, clear water with a public boat ramp await you at Crooked Lake, six miles south of Lake Wales. Lake Weohyakapka, better known as Lake Walk-inWater, yields nice catches of black crappie and largemouth bass and is located four miles south of S.R. 60 between River Ranch Resort and Lake Wales. A scenic river for canoe fishing trips, the Peace River flows from Polk County to Charlotte County.

OFF-THE-LEASH-FUN and MORE

DiOGi Park Located on three fenced-in acres within Loyce E. Harpe Park, off Carter Road in Lakeland. Polk County’s first dog park is dedicated in memory and tribute to fallen Polk County Deputy Sheriff Vernon “Matt” Williams and his beloved K-9, DiOGi. The park features separate play areas for small and large dogs, each with colorful fire hydrants, agility training equipment and shaded picnic shelters for doggie masters. Enjoy our great Central Florida weather and some off-the-leash fun! See map grid C-7

Auburndale Dog Park Two acres of fenced-in fun greet canine friends at the Auburndale Dog Park, located near the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex. Two sections – one for small dogs and one for large dogs – offer pet play equipment, such as tunnels, seesaws and fire hydrants. The dog-park entrance is on Denton Ave., off of Berkley Rd. in Auburndale. See map grid D-6 Pet-friendly Nature Trail Located in the wooded area at the rear of the Lewis Mathews Complex in Davenport. Direct access to the trail is at the end of East Pine Avenue. Dogs on a leash are welcome on this nature trail that offers benches and cleanup dispensers for dog owners. See map grid G-4
