A Fresh Look at Buffalo IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN BUFFALO LATELY, YOU HAVEN’T SEEN BUFFALO. We’re undergoing a 21st century renaissance that includes over $1 billion in new investment, a redeveloped waterfront and neighborhoods, burgeoning craft beer scene and new attractions, restaurants and hotels. That’s in addition to the classic American architecture, renowned art scene and Buffalo wings that have always put our city on the map…But don’t take our word for it.

A Rich Artistic Vibe

Buffalo’s creative roots run deep. There’s a rich artistic vibe that infuses the entire community, from the masterworks of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery to the regional treasures of the Burchfield Penney Art Center to small but influential institutions like Hallwalls, CEPA Gallery, Squeaky Wheel, Big Orbit Gallery and the Buffalo Arts Studio. That same vibe can be found in storefront galleries, mural covered walls and festivals and fairs – both old and new – devoted to the visual arts. Built to Last

The list of masters behind Buffalo’s most beautiful buildings and neighborhoods reads like a “Who’s Who” of some of history’s greatest architects: Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Sullivan, Stanford White, Eliel & Eero Saarinen, Henry Hobson Richardson, Frederick Law Olmsted. Buffalo’s extraordinary collection of architecture and urban design is a proud reminder of the city’s heyday and a catalyst for its renaissance. Explore Buffalo’s vast outdoor museum of American treasures on one of our many five-star house and walking tours.

Buffalo has one of the most extraordinary concert halls in the United States. A gift to the city from a deeply generous music-loving family whose name graces the building, Kleinhans Music Hall combines elegant simplicity with vibrant acoustics. Once new seating is installed to celebrate the hall’s 75th Anniversary in October 2015, it will comfortably seat 2,400 people while making each person feel the concert is being played for them alone. All the City ’s a Stage What were once known as the “lively” arts are exactly that in Buffalo –

brimming with vitality, energy and uncompromising creativity. More than 20 theater companies entertain audiences year round, including the summertime pleasures of Shakespeare in Delaware Park, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2015. Buffalo’s musical offerings are just as eclectic with clubs and concert halls presenting the kind of diverse programming you’d expect to find in a much larger metropolis. Of special note this year is the 75th anniversary of one of the most renowned concert venues in the country – Kleinhan’s Music Hall, home of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. Let us entertain you!

Shakespeare in Delaware Park has been going since 1976. The setting, only 10 minutes drive from downtown, is superb, in a venue designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the man behind Central Park, on a gently sloping hill where all of Buffalo brings folding chairs and picnics to enjoy the show.

The admission is free, the experience priceless. THE TORONTO STAR

BUFFALO BILLS

Home Field Advantage It’s 8:30 a.m. on a Sunday: time to crack open a cold one, fire up the grill

and start the party with 70,000 of your closest friends. Tailgating at the Ralph before a Bills game is a time-honored tradition that goes back decades. So is the Friday Night Bash, where fireworks cap off a summer evening of Bisons baseball in downtown’s retro-style Coca-Cola Field. Buffalo’s professional teams – the Bills, Sabres, Bisons and Bandits lacrosse – pride themselves on honoring the city’s proud sports history and treating you to the best fan experience in their leagues. Charlie Fashana

BUFFALO BISONS

Baseball is the greatest game and all generations go to it. I always get that at the ballpark. ‘Oh, you used to serve my grandfather.’ Or, ‘I used to come here and sit on my dad’s knee, and now I’m getting a beer from you.’ It’s amazing how many people come to me for their first legal beer and get their picture with the Conehead getting that first beer. It’s a rite of passage. I can’t sell it cheap, but I can sell it cold.

Seeing Buffalo in a New Light LAUREN BELFER

seemed to offer few options. Drives down Delaware Avenue were haunted by the Butler Mansion, boarded up like a ruin. Elmwood Avenue had several bars and restaurants, and a few shops, but little sense of community. Downtown was beginning its long decline. The devastation of Dutch elm disease, felling the beloved giant shade trees in gardens and streets, was a metaphor for the larger devastation that struck the city as factories closed and unemployment ran high. My high school friends and I talked incessantly about how and when we were going to escape Buffalo. We decided that almost any place would be better. Eventually I settled in New York City. For an entire decade, I didn’t visit my hometown. But in the past several years, I’ve sensed that Buffalo is changing. Energy, verve and hope fill the air, and the city seems to be bursting with natural beauty. When I was young, Delaware Park looked like a garbage dump, complete with an abandoned car or two. Now it’s pristine. My cousin was married in the Delaware Park Rose Garden and had her reception at the Marcy Casino, unheard of when I was a girl. The city’s other Frederick Law OlmstedTERRY CERVI designed parks have benefited from the work of the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy, which didn’t exist when I was growing up.

What is the measure of a city? The changes I’ve seen in Buffalo in recent years have led me to this answer: A city is its spirit. A city is its sense of community. A city is its people gathering together, their collective energy creating a sense of purpose as they work toward the future. I’m not a sociologist, an urban planner, an economist, an investigative journalist or a politician. I can’t offer statistics to confirm my reflections. I realize that during my visits I see only one facet of the prism that is Buffalo. But there’s no question that the beleaguered city of my girlhood has become a vibrant, charming city today.

Buffalo has become a vibrant, charming city. Here’s my favorite way to spend a Saturday in Buffalo, a way that didn’t exist when I was young: I stroll along Elmwood Avenue, shopping at the boutiques and perusing the farmers’ market. I browse the latest publications at Talking Leaves Bookstore. I have a snack at Caffe Aroma or Spot Coffee, sitting outside with my Buffalo friends when the weather is good, meeting the local canines and befriending their owners. (I’m an obsessive dog person, I admit.)

These days, astute and far-seeing businessmen are working to preserve Buffalo’s remarkable architectural legacy. Symbolic of this, the Butler Mansion at North and Delaware, the haunting ruin of my youth, is now the scrubbed and polished Jacobs Executive Development Center of the University at Buffalo.

If I’m in the mood for heartier fare, I drive to the marvelous Betty’s, at the corner of Edward and Virginia. When I was a girl, I never would have dreamed of finding a European-style cafe at the corner of Edward and Virginia – but nowadays I simply think, “Of course.”

The new Burchfield Penney Art Center has quickly become a remarkable gathering place, with crowded exhibition openings and communitybased lectures and activities.

After all, I’m in Buffalo, the City of Light. Lauren Belfer is the author of the New York Times Notable Book and bestseller City of Light, as well as the novel A Fierce Radiance, a Washington Post Best Novel of the Year and an NPR Mystery of the Year.

A City That Feels Deeply Real JAKE HALPERN

B

UFFALO IS SOMETIMES DESCRIBED AS ‘THE CITY OF NO ILLUSIONS’ because it is what it is and it doesn’t pretend to be anything else. On its face,

this description may seem rather dreary, deflating, uninspiring.

RHEA ANNA

But this couldn’t be further from the truth. The city is filled with wonders. Even its ruins are mystical. As teenagers, my brother and I would sneak into abandoned factories where moss carpeted the floors and rainwater flowed down hallways. I was then, and today, moved by the ghostly quality that lingers in such places. There is no point pretending that such relics don’t exist or apologizing for them. They are part of the city’s heritage and what makes the city unique – what gives it soul.

Many of the city’s under-populated neighborhoods are now being repopulated by refugees from Burma, Bhutan, Somalia, Eritrea, Sudan, Iraq and Iran. Parts of the West Side look like a UNESCO photo shoot. All of this is fodder for inspiration. This is why again and again, when I am looking for a good story to write about, I come back to Buffalo. Ours is a nation dominated by big box stores, shopping malls, Chipoltes, Applebees, and unrelenting sameness – much of which is designed to create the illusion of happiness. By contrast, Buffalo is a city that feels deeply real; and the absence of illusion is the key to its magic. Buffalo native Jake Halpern is an author, journalist, and radio producer.

Come Closer and Look Deeper ALEXIS DE VEAUX

S

PRING IS ONE OF THE BEST SEASONS TO experience Buffalo. A crop of white and purple crocus bloom in the strangest places. New buds burst from the trees, like promises you know will be kept. The colors of the city return. You remember what sidewalks look like without ice. The warmer air is an invitation to abandon. People start to shed their winter looks. At the first sign of a warm day, Buffalonians can be seen sporting shorts and flip flops. It’s a rite of spring. It’s the prelude to the JOE CASCIO luxury of summer.

26

VisitBuffaloNiagara.com

And summer brings with it all the hard work, the dedication, the pride of the city’s urban gardeners during the annual Garden Walk. This event alone is reason to visit the city, reason to stroll through the lush side yards and back yards of exuberant annuals and perennials, the chaos of beauty. It is nature showing off, preening before a human glance, inviting us to bend forward, to come closer and look deeper, to inhale the symbiosis between one kind of life and another. But no matter which season you visit Buffalo, something about the architecture of its spirit will inspire you.

A lovely Victorian building designed by Lord & Burnham which opened in 1900, the Botanical Gardens, while showing a bit of wear, is still a grand site. American Treasures

Buffalo was a great 19th century boomtown – one of the largest and most prosperous American cities by the turn of the century, the “Gateway to the West” and a center of industrial innovation. The legacy of our Gilded Age glory days can be found throughout the region, making Buffalo and environs a magnet for lovers of American heritage. Much of that history has been preserved and restored, from a jazz club that hosted the likes of Duke Ellington to a museum dedicated to the legendary Pierce Arrow automobile to the handcrafted elegance of the Roycroft Inn and Campus. Even the NBC office of the late Meet the Press moderator and Buffalo native Tim Russert is on display at the Buffalo History Museum.

Visitors to this designated Historical Landmark can enjoy performances by local, regional and national jazz, blues, swing and other acts, open jam sessions, and ladies-only bands Sunday afternoons, held upstairs in the original (Colored Musicians) club. The lower level has been transformed into a fabulous new museum that opened in 2013, featuring a wonderful introductory overview film, artifacts, audiovisual stations, musical instruments, music memorabilia, historic photographs and more. the presidential memorabilia that lines every square inch of the walls, consider this: before Grover Cleveland landed two non-consecutive terms as president, he served as mayor of Buffalo. Millard Fillmore, the 13th POTUS, built a humble country home in nearby East Aurora on his road to the White House. From the the end of William McKinley’s presidency to the beginning of Theodore Roosevelt’s, Buffalo’s ties to presidential history run surprisingly deep. Drink it in.

East Aurora: Homespun, handcrafted

ERIC FRICK

In the early 20th century, East Aurora’s Roycroft Campus and Roycroft Inn were globally known as the epicenter of the American Arts & Crafts Movement. Under the leadership of Elbert Hubbard, as many as 500 glassworkers, furniture makers, metalsmiths, bookbinders and other skilled artisans shared this campus and its philosophical adherence to timeless handiwork and respect for natural materials.

Today the Roycroft Campus is a National Historic Landmark and stands as the largest and most complete of the artists colonies that sprang up around the turn of the century. A short, 25-mile trip to East Aurora never disappoints with its charming boutiques, historic significance, genteel sensibilities and the not-to-be-missed Vidler’s 5 & 10. On your way to East Aurora, be sure stop in nearby Elma at the Made In America store where every item helps support an American family. And just outside East Aurora you can stretch your legs at Knox Farm State Park or see the woodworking methods of today’s Roycroft Master Artisans at the Schoolhouse Gallery.

Chautauqua Institution: American idyll In the late 19th century, the Chautauqua Movement brought adult education to international communities in the form of “Chautauquas”—permanent and tent-show summer schools featuring lectures and entertainment. At their peak, they appeared in more than 10,000 communities and served audiences of more 45 million. This movement all began at the world-renowned Chautauqua Institution, just 75 miles southeast of Buffalo. With education, concerts, lectures, dance, fine arts and interfaith activities, Chautauqua is a thriving arts-focused vacation destination that is as scenic as it is fulfilling. On a daytrip, get caught up in the inspirational scenery along Chautauqua Lake, visit the lovely lakeside village, tour its meticulously tended gardens or row out on onto the peaceful lake. On the journey there (or back) be sure to stop in the lovely farming community of Eden and see the Original Kazoo Company, Factory, Museum and Gift Shop where young and old can make their own kazoo and become an instant musician!

Ellicottville: Hiking, biking and window shopping A bucolic drive 50 miles south of Buffalo sets the stage for the small-town charms of Ellicottville. In the winter, it’s one of the top ski destinations in the east. In summer, it’s a hot golf destination. And year-round, the village’s quaint shops and restaurants offer respite for outdoor enthusiasts

visiting the Nannen Arboretum or availing themselves of the copious hiking and biking trails of nearby Allegany State Park. With multiple midto-late 19th century buildings it’s also a great place for an impromptu walking tour. Some of the appeal of a daytrip to Ellicottville can be found on the drive there. As you pass through Springville on Route 219, be sure to stop at the Springville Auction. Part flea market, part farmer’s market and part uniquely Western New York, it has something for everyone in the family. In Buffalo we have something to fit everyone’s style. For shoppers looking for the best deals of the season, the Walden Galleria, Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls USA and Boulevard Mall fit the bill. If you love to spend an afternoon browsing from shop to shop, you’ll enjoy our hundreds of boutiques along Hertel and Elmwood Avenues and in Allentown, East Aurora and Williamsville. And if you’re seeking a one-of-a-kind treasure, our antiques stores, museum gift shops and flea markets probably have what you’re looking for.

Many years of cross-border trips from Southern Ontario to Buffalo had followed a predictable pattern of suburban shopping, but for this trip, I wanted to get out of the malls and explore what else Buffalo had to offer. I learned that Buffalo is a cosmopolitan city with great theatre, trendy shopping streets, historic buildings, and a

KENMORE It’s easy to see why the American Planning Association recently named Kenmore one of the top ten great neighborhoods in the United States. This turn of the 20th century village just north of Buffalo features tree-lined streets and well-kept homes surrounding a vibrant central business district. Kenmore has several businesses that have become part of the fabric of Buffalo: E.M. Chrusciki Bakery, known for its Polish pastries; King Condrell’s, an ice cream shop renowned for its homemade toppings and Watson’s Chocolates, one of Buffalo’s original producers of sponge candy.

NAVAL& MILITARY PARK Enjoy a trip through military history as you tour the nation’s largest inland naval park. Open daily from April 1 through October 31 and weekends during November.

LANCASTER Few villages of 10,000 can boast a vibrant performance theater among its offerings. Lancaster, about 30 minutes east of Buffalo, is one of them. The Lancaster Opera House, which dates back to 1897 and underwent a restoration in recent decades, draws thousands each year for its plays and musicals. While you’re there, make it dinner and a show. Desiderio’s, Frank’s Grille and 99 Brick Oven Bar & Grille are all popular local favorites. SPRINGVILLE An artistic energy weaves its way through Erie County’s southernmost village, nestled in the hills en route to Western New York’s ski country. The Springville Center for the Arts sponsors an annual art walk each spring and hosts dozens of cultural events, from live music and theater to art exhibitions. A visit to the nearby Griffis Sculpture Park, a seamless integration of modern art and the great outdoors, is in keeping with Springville’s artistic vibe. WILLIAMSVILLE Williamsville offers a bustling business district filled with boutiques, cafes and restaurants, all just minutes from downtown Buffalo and the Buffalo Niagara International Airport. Looking for scenic beauty? Williamsville has it; take a stroll through the heart of the village to see a pristine waterfall at Glen Park. How about a bite to eat? Restaurants like the Glen Park Tavern and Eagle House have collectively served the village for over 300 years. With new hotels also in the mix, this 19th century village northeast of Buffalo has every amenity a visitor could want.

I Love Buffalo MICK COCHRANE

come to Buffalo from St. Paul, as I did, thinks of her new city as “scruffy.” I am afraid some of my friends may have thought it was an insult.

ERIC FRICK

Here was another guy, they may have imagined, lining up behind the late-night guys with their snow jokes, taking a cheap shot. But in my own private aesthetic lexicon, scruffy is a compliment—to me, it’s a term of affection: it means endearingly unkempt, not slick. I’ll take scruffy over slick any day. But now, I’m afraid that characterization of my adopted hometown has become as dated as some of the hairstyles and clothing in the book. There’s nothing scruffy about HarborCenter or our sparkling new medical campus, not a bit that’s unkempt at Larkinville or Canalside.

72

What I may love most about Buffalo these days is the way that the spirits of tradition and innovation are coming together. My favorite places reveal a city engaged in dozens of lively, ongoing conversations with its own rich history. I love the refurbished grandeur of the North Park Theater. I love Silo City, where you can hear cutting-edge poetry or watch films projected in the shadow of magnificent, hundred-year-old grain elevators. I love that at the Western New York Book Arts Center, young designers are using vintage type and presses and recycled inks to create fresh work and are revitalizing the art of the book. I love that on the West Side, new arrivals from places like Burma and Ethiopia are bringing their talents and energy—and amazing cuisines!— to our city which was built by earlier immigrants. I love that both apprentice writers and the kind of literary giants brought to town regularly by Just Buffalo Literary Center can feel the ghosts of Mark Twain, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Robert Creeley, and view manuscripts of classic works—Huck Finn at the downtown library, the James Joyce collection at UB’s Poetry Room. I love that the Colored Musicians Club, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Darwin Martin House and Louis Sullivan’s Guaranty Building, the master

works at the Albright-Knox and the Burchfield Penney—all are here to inspire and engage a new generation of musicians, architects, and artists. I love that in Buffalo, you never have the sense that you could be somewhere, anywhere else. There’s no McNeighborhoods, that’s for sure, nothing generic or bland. Whether you’re on Hertel or Elmwood Avenue, in the Fruit Belt or the First Ward, there’s a distinctive texture, a unique flavor. You are here, as the maps say, and nowhere else. Indies thrive here—indie bands, indie bookstores, indie artists and shops of all kinds—because we are independent, simple as that. We love what’s local and homegrown, one-offs and originals, beloved oddball traditions, quirky geniuses, and hidden gems.

New arrivals are bringing their talents and energy to our city. What I will always love most about Buffalo are the people. It’s said that winter weather inspires neighborliness, and that’s probably right. Buffalonians are rightly famous for their warmth and generosity, for their unpretentiousness, for their decency. Ask someone for directions, for recommendations regarding the best wings or Polish sausage or favorite fish fry, and you’ll see what I mean. I love Buffalo because it embodies beautifully essential character traits that I admire perhaps above all others—passion, resiliency, and creativity. I love that so many smart young people are choosing to stay and deciding to return to help write the next chapter in the history of Buffalo. I am convinced that the story they write will only get better— it’s going to be amazing. Mick Cochrane is the director of creative writing at Canisius College and the author of four novels, most recently Fitz.
