ABINGDON STREET FY1 1DR

What’s 3.5 metres high and made out of ten London taxis? Big Bird of course! This new Lightpool feature is an exciting new addition to this year’s Lightpool Festival. The 1 tonne pigeon was originally created for the Museum of London’s immersive experience Beasts of London, created in partnership with Guildhall School of Music & Drama, but it will spread its wings and head to Blackpool for Lightpool Festival. This large-scale sculpture of a Trafalgar Square Pigeon (Columba livia domestica) is impressively constructed from parts of London Black Cabs (Hackney Carriage) finished in its natural plumage and aesthetically illuminated by Lightworks, the Blackpool Illuminations production team. MDM Props in Greenwich, London were commissioned to build the sculpture.

TOWER PROJECTIONS

ART TRAIL

THE BLACKPOOL TOWER, FY1 4BJ

The Blackpool Tower Projections transform The Blackpool Tower into a sea of light, colour and sound, as a stunning, digitally mapped multi-media show is projected onto this iconic building. There are five individual projection shows, including the three headline shows: DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE The story of an astronaut exploring new worlds. The show explores a fantasy based loosely upon a remarkable mission of determination and ambition. This experience draws the audience into worlds without gravity: beautiful, fantastic and full of uncertainty. CHASING STARS The eight-minute galactic tour has been designed to entertain and inspire the next generation of astronauts and engineers. ENCHANTED BLACKPOOL Created by Cecile Llewelyn-Bowen, the daughter of Illuminations Curator Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen. BY CHILA KUMARI SINGH BURMAN Grundy Art Gallery, Blackpool Illuminations and Lightpool Festival are excited to announce a new light art installation by the internationally recognised artist, Chila Kumari Singh Burman. After high profile projects for Tate Britain and Covent Garden in London, the artist has now turned her sights to Blackpool and the town’s Grade II listed Grundy Art Gallery. Throughout autumn 2021, visitors will be able to delight in a riotous display of multi-coloured new light works that have been specially commissioned for the exterior of the Grundy. Brought together under the title, “Blackpool Light of My Life”, the exhibition is the artist’s love letter to the town which she visited regularly as a child, with Blackpool Illuminations being an abiding memory. Describing herself as ‘Punjabi-Liverpudlian’, the artist likes to combine her Indian roots with popular culture and has produced a display that she hopes will help people feel joy at a time when such emotions may be hard to find.

HOUNDSHILL SHOPPING CENTRE, FY1 4RJ

BY CHILA KUMARI SINGH BURMAN We are thrilled to bring The White Tiger car to Blackpool. It was created to celebrate the launch of the criticallyacclaimed film The White Tiger, which is based on the New York Times bestseller and 2008 Man Booker Prize winning novel of the same name. Netflix partnered with the internationally-renowned artist, Chila Kumari Singh Burman, to explore the concepts of ambition, class, society and entrepreneurship from the film. Creating this visually stunning interpretation of the ‘White Tiger Driver’ car, Chila put her own distinct style on an otherwise ordinary looking car.

The appearance of White Tiger at Lightpool Festival is partfunded by the European Regional Development Fund.

BY PHIL HOLMES FOR LIGHTPOOL FESTIVAL An 8m by 3m creative lighting installation composed of 48 unfilled water containers, which typically hold 1,000 litres of water each, specially adapted to create a stunning, transportable and eco-friendly light feature to raise the importance of water. Did you know the average person uses the same amount of water these containers hold within the space of a year? And that’s only at home! Our great grandparents managed with only three containers. ADELAIDE STREET WEST FY1 4SR

Portrait of self is a deliberately and stylishly surreal statement that suggests that the self-revelatory image of a self-portrait is not always as honest as it seems. Laying oneself bare artistically is the theoretical purpose of the self portrait in the modern era, but earlier ages were very happy to accept the artist’s depiction of themselves as a paradigm of status, self-worth and as an expression of their artistic ability.

ENTWINED LIGHT

ART TRAIL

CEDAR SQUARE FY1 1BP

BY ANTONIYA STOITSOVA & NICOLO BENCINI Entwined Light tells the story of the ever-evolving relationship between the artificial and the natural through the transitional interplay of form and light. The exoskeleton is a symbol of the man-made, while the photo-luminescent thread, powered by the sun, is an expression of the natural. The artwork provides the visitors with a path through this system in transition from natural organic body to controlled man-made configuration and vice versa. Entwined Light is a multi-layered piece that unfolds throughout the day-night cycle. Variations in colour and illumination invite the visitors to take part in the story and revisit the installation at different stages throughout the cycle. Taking inspiration from bioluminescence in nature, the installation demonstrates alternative methods of generating light by utilising the inherent properties of photo-luminescent materials. While the threads are soft in colour during the day, they activate in vivid blue and pink at night through a network of solar powered UV lights. Passively charged by external light, the threads change colour and continue to glow when the lights are NEW switched off. FOR 2021

HOUSE OF CARDS

ART TRAIL

PROMENADE, TOWER TRAM STOP, FY1 4TQ

BY OGE Our House of Cards is a beautiful light art installation that is slick and joyful in the daytime and turns into a fulminant lightshow at night time. Will it blow away or continue to rise up towards the heavens? The fate of the house of cards wobbles between the two. Up or down - it’s far from decided. For now, House of Cards remains standing, shining in the night, reaching for the stars. It consists of 128 light boxes in the form of playing cards, which in turn (or all at once) appear according to a preconfigured choreography. The ingenious structure has several levels; it looks like a modern church from one side and from the other like a classical structure of building blocks. Creating a House of Cards is not about a fragility, disaster or crumbling - it is about the motivation of every child: to dare, take courage, to create and challenge one’s skills, risking and aiming to build as high as possible. It requires not only determination, caution, calm and skill but also belief and trust, keeping the big vision in mind. Every card of House of Cards has a different design. For this we collaborated with over 35 internationally acclaimed street and visual artists from all over the world - creating one big joint art exhibition, carefully curated and crafted.

The appearance of House of Cards at Lightpool Festival is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund.
