*WUE (Western Undergraduate Exchange) is a scholarship awarded to incoming students only through the admissions process and is a highly competitive merit based scholarship.
UM scholarships are awarded based on merit. Incoming students are eligible and will automatically be evaluated for UM Entering Student Scholarships (including the Western Undergraduate Exchange-WUE). To be considered for these scholarships and to maximize your financial aid opportunities, complete an application for admission as early as possible. Awarding begins November 15. The Presidential Leadership Scholarship (PLS) is the University of Montana’s premier freshman scholarship and does require a separate application to the Davidson Honors College (DHC). Presidential Scholars are chosen solely on academic merit with scholarships being renewable for a total of four years. While the UC provides plenty of fun, the Curry Health Center keeps your body and mind healthy. Experience the University of Montana in person. The campus visit program operates year round and offers an opportunity to see inside UM and create your own impression. The campus visit includes an information presentation about UM, a guided tour of campus, optional meetings with faculty in your area of interest if requested, and complimentary lunch at our awardwinning Food Zoo whenever available. Visits are available Monday through Friday, except holidays. If possible, come during the academic year to experience campus life at its fullest. (Although Missoula is spectacular during the summer.) To give us time to prepare and arrange for faculty to meet with you, schedule your visit at least two weeks in advance. During holidays and breaks, visits and tours are limited. Josh Sticka had a moment of clarity in his gross anatomy class during his first year of medical school. His lab partner had attended an Ivy League school, and Sticka remembered thinking, “I went to UM as an undergrad, and he went to Harvard, and here we are at the same level.” A Billings native with dreams of becoming a doctor, Sticka was advised by a surgeon mentor to stay closer to home for his undergraduate studies. “He said, ‘As long as you get a good education, it might make sense not to spend too much money. You can still be successful.’” As a premed major at UM in the ’90s, Sticka started out in computer science, discovered a love of physics and became astrophysics major. He joined the Davidson Honors College, was active in student government and the pre-med club, and became coordinator of the Advocates, a student group that promotes and supports UM. The WWAMI program then provided a pipeline to medical school in Washington. “I found UM to be a perfect fit, and going there was one of the best decisions I could make,” said Sticka, now a pediatric cardiologist in Missoula. “I got a great education in a wonderful place.”

Although Kasey Austin has been to Patagonia and Peru, the University of Montana holds a special place in her heart. “I was just blown away by the hospitality,” she says about her first day on campus. Austin, who graduated from UM in 2011 as a Presidential Leadership Scholar with a degree in education, grew up in Billings and comes from a family of adventurers. As the vice president of operations for Austin Adventures, she now manages a guide team, hiring people to lead tours in places like Yellowstone and Crater Lake, and works with international partner companies to develop adventures on all seven continents. Outside magazine nominated her as the world’s top family guide in 2014. While at UM, Austin began pursuing a wildlife biology degree. But then she volunteered at a local school through the Flagship program and joined the culture club there, where she discovered she loved teaching about different countries. For Austin, the best part of UM was not just the beautiful places on campus, but the supportive people she encountered along the way. “I think it definitely made me appreciate the community-feel,” she says. “That’s something I will always continue to look for.”

If you are going to be a college freshman, we require for you to: complete the application for admissions, pay the $30 application fee, and submit an unofficial high school transcript (if you are still in high school) as well as test scores. If your high school posts your ACT/SAT scores on your transcript there is no need to send in additional scores. Please ensure that you ask your high school to send your final high school transcripts with a posted graduation date, final GPA, and class rank (if available) upon graduation. All freshmen applicants are automatically considered for incoming student merit scholarships based on their GPA and test scores. UM does Superscore tests so if you have multiple test scores from the same test please feel free to submit them all. To reserve your residence hall room, complete the application online and submit a $200 prepayment and a $25 processing fee. Freshmen with less than 30 semester credits are required to live on campus. New student housing is assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. UM also provides housing options for students with spouses and/or dependents. Upon admission to UM, OSS emails instructions for how to proceed and sets all of the academic tasks you must complete before June 1 to be registered in the high-demand courses for your major. One of those tasks – completing the Academic Interest Questionnaire (A-IQ) – allows you to indicate specific interests within your chosen major, as well as list high school courses and courses taken for college, IB and AP credit.

TRANSFER FROM A MONTANA UNIVERSITY SYSTEM (MUS) SCHOOL IF YOU ATTENDED ONE OF THE MUS SCHOOLS IN THE PAST 5 YEARS AND WISH TO ATTEND UM THE PROCESS IS STRAIGHTFORWARD:

You don’t need to fill out UM’s Admissions Application. Ask your Registrar’s Office for a Transmittal of your file to UM. Pay $8 instead of $30. All transcripts and application information are sent together. Send final transcripts after your final semester if you are not done when you process the transmittal. • Be sure to speak with an academic advisor as soon as possible to determine how your transfer credits count toward UM degree requirements.
TRANSITIONING FROM MISSOULA COLLEGE • You don’t need to fill out UM’s Admissions Application. • Ask the Missoula College Registrar’s Office to transfer your file to the Mountain (main) Campus. • It’s free! • All transcripts and application information are sent together. • AAS students transitioning should pursue information on the BAS degree. • Be sure to speak with an academic advisor as soon as possible to determine how your Missoula College credits count toward UM degree requirements.

2. LOG INTO YOUR UMCONNECT STUDENT EMAIL ACCOUNT, AND CHECK IT REGULARLY
• umt.edu/umconnect • You will need to use your NetID to log in, which can be found by clicking the “What’s my NetID?” link on the UMConnect page. Your initial password will be the last six digits of your Student ID Number (begins with 790, located on your acceptance letter).
• To check your hold status log into your CyberBear account (cyberbear.umt.edu), using your NetID login. Click on the top link that says “Student Services” followed by “Student Records” and then “View Holds.” • The most common student account hold is a Health Hold, which means the Curry Health Center needs a completed Medical Requirement Form (found in acceptance packet) as well as verifiable documentations of your immunizations.
